Blue Hive

Was really pleased with this one! It was a "no tears" graphic in that it appeared with a small amount of tweaking. Maybe luck does have something to do with this process.

Blue Hive

The large version can be seen at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: That 2006 has been, for the most part, a good year. Sure there were times that were not fun but I had more than enough work and laughed more than I cried so its all good. Here's wishing all of you out there a great New Year and all the best for 2007!

Desolate

Its dark and moody - we all have days like this.

Desolate

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: All the little things that have been going right lately. Despite the graphic above, life is good right now.

Star Spangled Banner

The background was created with Apophysis. This was inspired my previous collaboration, only this time, the stars are mine and I can post it on Shutterstock. It took a rather long time to get it looking "just right". Being a Kiwi, it feels really weird posting a US flag on my blog.

Star Spangled Banner

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to indulge in a good book. Spent most of the day curled up in my favourite chair reading.

Impi

This one, made from "scratch" reminded me of the Zulu shields that we learned about in school. The diamond part of the pattern is just about the right shape. Johnny Clegg also wrote a really cool song also titled Impi.

Impi

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: My Anti rain device (aka: a very large umbrella). It works by discouraging rain from falling. Taking said device on a walk almost always guarantees fine weather. Its fail-safe as well. If its anti-rain powers are not working at optimal strength and it does rain, at least I don't get wet.

Summer Trellis

For those who are not "into" gardening, a trellis is a diamond shaped wooden structure which supports creepers in the garden. The name was inspired by the green "trellis" that appeared in this one.

Summer Trellis

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the digital camera that I wanted to buy on special yesterday was sold out. Turns out that my dad has been able to find a much better one for me at a great price. Am not getting too excited yet as I have not seen the specs but it sounds very good.

Tuesday, December 26, 2006

Ice Fire

This one is best viewed at large size. The detail that makes up the larger pattern is quite cool.

Ice Fire

Today's Gratitude Item: That the 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle we just completed had one extra piece rather than one piece missing. Its only the second time that has every happened, which probably means that someone out there is missing a piece to their puzzle. Needless to say, this particular puzzle was a lot of fun to do.

Stars and Rings

Yet another woven / tiled fractal. This one uses the 'radial blur' variation to get the "star" effect.

Starring Stars and Rings

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: A new version of Apo to play with. What more could a girl ask for :)

Hearts Afire

A bit different from usual but hearts are selling on Shutterstock .

Hearts Afire

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being woken by dad every morning to go for a nice long walk. Doing the walking thing alone is no fun at all. With dad along, its a real hoot.

Saturday, December 23, 2006

Gold Wrap

Here is yet another "tiled" fractal which looks like gold ribbon was involved.

Gold Wrap

The large version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: The the freezing rain that fell this morning did not last all day! Brr. Theoretically, its mid-summer over here but from the weather, one would never guess.

Friday, December 22, 2006

Bubble Wrap

This is the fractal version of the packaging material. If only the real stuff looked as cool as this. Made with the help of that "bad tiling script" which is actually really good.

Bubble Wrap

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting another "enhanced license" download at Shutterstock. This is my second so far and give that an "enhanced" download is equivalent to 80 regular downloads, I'm stoked.

Thursday, December 21, 2006

Only You

I still don't like Valentines day, but this was a graphic that was crying to be made. The heart was done in Apo and then tiled / recoloured manually in Paint Shop Pro.

Only You

The large version can be seen at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my dance teacher and her new baby daughter are both doing well. Baby was born today (about a week early) and my best friend called to let me know the good news.

Heart Light

Finally managed to get Apophysis to generate something that actually looked like a heart. Everyone else seems to be able to do it and I was getting very frustrated with my lack of progress.

Heart Light

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a really beautiful mug as an end of year present from my favourite student. Said mug is very "classy" and sophisticated. Its black and features tulips.

Tuesday, December 19, 2006

Cool Construct

I tried something called the "bad tiling" script which is actually very good!

Cool Construct

The large version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: The logic / toothpick puzzles found at the preceding link. They should keep my favourite student engaged / busy for our last lesson of the year.

Monday, December 18, 2006

River Weave

Am super pleased with this one as the gradient is more "integrated" into the picture. Its called river weave because, with a bit of imagination, the mauve / gold bits could be the middle of a canoe going through water (the blue parts on the top and bottom).

River Weave

The large version can be seen at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: A newly bought $2.00 plastic shoehorn. Very handy for getting my sneakers on in a hurry.

Christmas Star / Illuminated Dandilion

Made with the same params as "Lights in a Box", only this one has a final transform. Looks like my computer finally got a bit of "Christmas Spirit", which, frankly is annoying because "we", as in computer and I, are Jewish! Still, with any luck, this stuff will sell on Shutterstock.

Christmas Star / Iluminuated Dandilion

The large image is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: A great day at the library. I found a task which our seven year old volunteer really enjoys doing and we had fun. Said task is actually quite important as it involves colour coding some of the books in the kids section and doing this will make life easier for us and the people who use the library.

Saturday, December 16, 2006

Lights in a Box

These lights are pre-packaged for quick, easy assembly. Not recommended for children under three years old.

Lights in a Box

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: A totally relaxing day. That and actually managing to solve two "medium" level Sudoku puzzles in a row.

Friday, December 15, 2006

Chanukah Sameach!

Chanukah Sameach everyone!

Channuka Box

The large version is available at the preceding link. Please take a look at it to get a good view of the text / for printing purposes.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the Lord our God, King of the universe, has given us life, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this season. If this item looks oddly familiar, it should. Its based on the blessing that we say when lighting the candles on the first night of Chanukah. Of course, if you have no idea what I'm going on about, you might want to look at the link to Chanukah at the start of this entry.

Israeli Fractal Flag

The fractal is actually rather old. It was previously posted under the name "sapphire sensation". Was inspired to make a flag out of it partly due to my US flag collaboration adventure and partly because someone in the Jewish Studies dept where I subbed on Friday has a flag in their office that has the Star of David 30 degrees off! This really bothered me for some reason.

Israeli Fractal Flag

The large version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: An extra half hour in the day! This was due to the fact that my loving father woke me half an hour earlier than usual to go walking as he is swamped at the office and wanted to catch the *very* early ferry. Fun fun fun.

E-man: A Cautionary Tale

E-men, or more correctly E-people are people that you know only via electronic communications. Things can become complicated when you actually meet an E-person in real time (see limerick below).

E-man

I thought E-man was great
that notion's now up for debate
The weekend went well
now its all gone to hell
Leaving me somewhat irate.

Lets just say he said he would email and didn't. Does not take a genius to figure out that he's just not that into me. A bit of honesty would have been nice. If something really really bad has happened to him, then I will take all of this back. I'm not holding my breath though.

Today's Gratitude Item: My Israeli dance tutors. They give the group their passion, enthusiasm and energy basically because they love dance. Tonight was our last class of the year so it is an appropriate time to thank them. Thanks ladies!

Ice Heart

This one is mainly thanks to the hints given by one of the generous artists at fracfan

Ice heart

The large version can be viewed at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: That grabbing the email addresses off the google group that I run for the organisers of next year's dance camp was not as painful or difficult as feared. It was actually really simple and will mean that the camp organisers can contact everyone directly.

Nocturnal Comfort

Or perhaps it should be called "Psychedelic Sting Ray". Then I could dedicate it to the late Steve Urwin.

Nocturnal Comfort

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Not having to walk today. I walked enough for three people yesterday and decided to take a well earned break to today. It was great!

Peach Braid

Was pleasantly surprised at the quality of this render. It looks more "stiff" than expected but am pleased with the result.

Peach Braid

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Perfect weather and sunscreen. Weather today was brilliant. We had clear skies with a cold wind which was perfect for walking. This was especially valuable as I was showing Auckland to a friend from Dunedin. We had an amazing time. Bought sunscreen at a Dairy before going out in the sun and it worked really well.

Dream Singer

This one is dedicated to the gentleman who chanted Haftorah in synagogue two weeks ago.

Said gentleman did a good job and I felt a little sad for him because most people did not appear to be particularly attentive. I had read the passage in English and simply closed my eyes and relaxed during his rendition. His voice was oddly soothing and is the inspiration for the name of this fractal.

Dream Singer

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Many wonderful things have happened since Friday afternoon and I am grateful for all of them. I am most grateful for meals around the dinner table where everyone laughs, tells jokes / stories and generally has a good time.

Friday, December 08, 2006

Pretty Porthole

Have not done one of these for a while. Sometimes revisiting "old" techniques can be a useful exercise.

Pretty Porthole

The large version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Plane delays. No I am not kidding. My friend's flight was supposed to land at 2.55pm but got canceled, which means he comes in at 4.30pm instead. This literally gave me another hour and a half to get ready! I needed the time.

Thursday, December 07, 2006

Ocean Paradise

The blue reminded me of the ocean, the green would be the paradise bit.

Ocean Paradise

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: A "mix master". Making meringue without this handy appliance would be a lot tougher.

Wednesday, December 06, 2006

Refuge

This one is related to "Sanctuary", "Haven" and "Surprise". In fact they all look alike, only this one has a darker, brooding feel to it. Of course if you were in need of refuge, you would probably be experiencing some of those darker emotions, hence the colour choice.

Refuge

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: That someone spotted a typo in one of the graphics that I made and was kind enough to tell me about it. The typo has been fixed. Even better, it got fixed before the graphic appeared on this blog.

Digital Weirdness

This one is rather aptly named. Its a "wire and tubes" fractal but you would not think so to look at it. It took an insanely long time to render (more than four hours) at 4M (2000 x 2000). The coloured background makes a nice change.

Digital Weirdness

The large version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: A day in which just about everything went well. A meeting that I was dreading was mercifully short and painless and the current project I a working on is literally coming together nicely.

Monday, December 04, 2006

Magen Pearl

Another "wire and tubes" experiment that turned out way better than I thought it would. Was not expecting it to be quite so nice. The bright spot in the middle is a bit of a worry though.

Magen Pearl

The large version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: I finally managed to finish my initial report on the Chevra Centenary weekend. It still needs work. Journalism is not for me. The events / weekend were great, writing about it afterwards was much harder than expected, probably due to my severe lack of training. Never mind. Its finally done!

Sunday, December 03, 2006

Blue Splat

Posted late at night. Why does this one look like its staring at me??

Blue Splat

The large version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: A fun afternoon. We had our Israeli dance "end of year" party and it was great. Instead of all bringing random bits of food, the hostess organised waffles for us and we brought the toppings. Very very good.

Saturday, December 02, 2006

Jewel Mountains

It reminded me of a series of hills, complete with jewels of some sort. Was a lot of fun to make.

Jewel Mountains

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Chocolate Cake collaboration. As in I made the cake, my mom iced it and we all go to eat it after dinner.

Friday, December 01, 2006

Naughts and Crosses

Another "wire & tubes" creation. This is very different from any other Apo work so far. Its most satisfying though.

Naughts and Crosses

The large version can be seen at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Realising that I could use use the internal render on Apo do render an image in a large size. I had not clicked on the "limit memory" button which meant that asking it to do large renders resulted in complaints. A "help me" post to fracfan and the response that I got meant being able to solve the problem.

Thursday, November 30, 2006

Trilobite Dawn

This reminded me of a Trilobite. The Orange bit at the "head" could be the sun rising. Hence the name.

The "byte" part of "Trilobyte" is cause this critter is totally electronic. I thought I was being original until I saw an article on Wikipedia about the Game Developer which has the same name. I guess great minds really do think alike :)

Trilobyte Dawn

The large version can be seen at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a lift home from school. Weather was fine this morning so I did not take an umbrella with me and did the walk / ferry / walk thing. Was planning to walk / bus / walk to get home but it was pouring when school was over so I phoned / waited / got a lift instead. Thanks mum! Being close to one's parents is clearly a wonderful thing.

Fragile Leaf

Autumn has slipped away,
and winter is now here to stay.
Two lovers drawn too soon apart,
remain connected heart to heart.

A fragile leaf floats through time,
that's the reason for this rhyme.
Death must come to all it seems,
though some live on in other's dreams.

A single soul now drifts along,
seeking solace, staying strong.

*Its actually summer time in NZ at the moment, pity someone forgot to tell my computer that!

Fragile Leaf

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Artistic collaboration mixed in with procrastination! Was supposed to be writing an article about last weekend's events but got a bit sidetracked. The full story, with pictures is at the preceding link.

Muted Magic

This one took a lot of "tweaking" to get "right". The result reminds me of membranous wings.

Muted Magic

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my one student called me to tell me her Science exam went well and she got a job that she applied for. She was very excited about both the job and the exam. It is really great when students take the time to let me know how things went.

Monday, November 27, 2006

Imminent Fall

If you squint and use your imagination, this one looks a bit like a tree. The orange bit at the bottom RHS is the trunk (or not).

Imminent Fall

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being appreciated by one of my private students. It was their last lesson today as the "big exam" is tomorrow. Said student gave me a "Christmas / Thank You" gift which was very unexpected but very nice indeed. It really is the thought that counts!

Sunday, November 26, 2006

Old Gold

Made from scratch, uploaded in a hurry.

Old Gold

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: An absolutely perfect evening. Tonight was the "big night" in that it was the Black Tie Dinner to celebrate the centenary of the Auckland Chevra Kadisha. The entire evening was totally brilliant. The food was great, the speeches were well done and everyone was really, really nice. All in all a totally brilliant event organised by a group of incredibly dedicated people.

Path of Sorrow

Its lonely, spiky and almost colourless.

At some point, everyone gets to walk down it.

Path of Sorrow

The large image is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: The Friday night dinner (Shabbaton) that I attended last night. My "old" Rabbi, who has moved on to greater things in Sydney was the guest of honour and he was amazing. I heard it said that he was the best he has ever been. His speech was totally brilliant and I was most privileged to attend this memorable occasion.

Friday, November 24, 2006

Fragile Illusion

Sometimes life is but a fragile illusion. Other times, it is painfully real.

Fragile Illusion

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the small change I have been accumulating recently is finally being spent! Turns out that stuff is great for bus fare and paying parking.

Rigid Flow

This one is dedicated to Codename Emrys and is coloured blue in his honour. He knows why. Thanks again :)

For those of you wondering why I did not post yesterday, my Internet was down again for the second time in as many weeks. Frustrating but true. Its working again now *obviously*.

Rigid Flow

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Whitakers now make 62% cocoa / coffee chocolate, as in the chocolate has 62% cocoa and 8% coffee in it. Its very, very good. Texture is "interesting" - its a bit chunky rather than smooth. I simply love it.

Tuesday, November 21, 2006

Light Chains

Made from scratch late on a Sunday night. Get the full effect by taking a look at the large version.

Light Chains

Today's Gratitude Item: Warm slippers. Its surprisingly chilly at the moment! It may be November but it certainly does not feel like summer over here.

Monday, November 20, 2006

Weird Zig Zag Thingy

The title says it all.

weird Zig Zag Thingy

The large version can be seen at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting work tomorrow! With the seniors on study leave, everyday worked at this point is a bonus. One days work = a lot of downloads on Shutterstock!

Sunday, November 19, 2006

Marble Army

All lined up in a row
Its off to war we go
We all look the same
Called by number, not by name.

Feeling blue, feeling sad?
Sometimes life is just too bad.
At least if we win this game,
We will get eternal fame.

*or not*

Marble Army

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having some rather cool friends who like me for who I am.

Saturday, November 18, 2006

Celtic Weave

Its not quite Celtic knot work, but its close.

Celtic Weave

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting four downloads on a particular graphic on Shutterstock. The graphic concerned looks like a Christmas Tree with lights, especially if you use your imagination and squint, which explains the large number of downloads. It was only after I stopped trying to make Christmas stuff, that something "seasonal" appeared in Apo. The only question is what is a good Jewish girl like me doing creating graphics like that? Answer, it just happened and its a good thing cause people are prepared to pay to use it. Why fight it?

Friday, November 17, 2006

Brown Paper

Reminded me of scrunched up brown paper. It could also be a dead leaf though.

Brown Paper

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting my walking done early in the morning. That left the rest of the day free to "play" on my computer. It felt really decadent to spend all day "playing" but it was fun! With the senior students now on study leave, I am pretty much on holiday. That is one of the joys of being a substitute teacher.

Thursday, November 16, 2006

Diamond Dance

This is what happens when you take a square dance and rotate it by 90 degrees.

Diamond Dance

The large version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being invited to be a journalist for the upcoming Chevra Kadisha Centennial events. This is an amazing opportunity which involves going to a number of cool events over a three day period and then writing about the experience for the magazine that goes out to the members of our Shul. The only problem is that I am not a trained journalist and am now having one of those "I wish I knew what I was doing" moments. Happily, there will also be some real journalists covering the event so I am not totally on my own. It should be fun!

Wednesday, November 15, 2006

Beach Chain

The things in the middle looked like seashells to me. They could also be the links of a chain. Hence the name of this piece.

Beach Chain

The large size is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: My dad. As in, he took some of my fractal greeting cards to work and managed to sell sixteen of them to his workmates! My dad is a generally amazing human being and I was really grateful that he was prepared to take my "stuff" into his office and sell it.

Tuesday, November 14, 2006

Metal Weave

Done from scratch. Got "lucky" with the gradient. Its a cross between a waffle and the thing that actually makes the waffle.

Metal Weave

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to get most of the stuff on my list done. Being relatively up to date is always a good thing.

Monday, November 13, 2006

Colloseum

At least this one was easy to name.

Colloseum

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the internet is finally back. I missed posting yesterday because it was down for so long! Was going through serious Internet withdrawal and it was not fun. Am pathetically happy that things are back to normal now.

Turns out that the "issue" was a telecom fault, rather than a problem with my system. Pity it took the guys at maxnet (my ISP) so long to figure it out. They had me changing my router settings and generally pulling my hair out before they finally thought to check if the issue was not with me! Then because they told me to change my settings, even when the issue with Telecom was solved, my system was still not working because the settings were wrong and the person I spoke to could not help me to fix it. Finally called my brother who was able to get me sorted in around two minutes!

Strange Lights

Subtle weaving in the night
Not too lose and not too tight
Gently rendered in the dark
and signed with a watermark.

Strange Lights

The large version can be seen at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Time to recharge in improved weather. The recent cold snap was too reminiscent of winter for my liking!

Friday, November 10, 2006

Peacock Feathers

Is it just me, or are these almost metallic? I know peacocks don't actually look like this, but wouldn't it be cool if they did?

Peacock Feathers

The large version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being "Bible Champion" for the week. Remember how I won the Bible challenge thingy yesterday? Well, the person on today did not manage to beat my score so that made me this weeks champion. The prize is $100.00 worth of book vouchers which is great. I am so happy :)
