Trilobite Dawn

This reminded me of a Trilobite. The Orange bit at the "head" could be the sun rising. Hence the name.

The "byte" part of "Trilobyte" is cause this critter is totally electronic. I thought I was being original until I saw an article on Wikipedia about the Game Developer which has the same name. I guess great minds really do think alike :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a lift home from school. Weather was fine this morning so I did not take an umbrella with me and did the walk / ferry / walk thing. Was planning to walk / bus / walk to get home but it was pouring when school was over so I phoned / waited / got a lift instead. Thanks mum! Being close to one's parents is clearly a wonderful thing.

Fragile Leaf

Autumn has slipped away,
and winter is now here to stay.
Two lovers drawn too soon apart,
remain connected heart to heart.

A fragile leaf floats through time,
that's the reason for this rhyme.
Death must come to all it seems,
though some live on in other's dreams.

A single soul now drifts along,
seeking solace, staying strong.

*Its actually summer time in NZ at the moment, pity someone forgot to tell my computer that!

Today's Gratitude Item: Artistic collaboration mixed in with procrastination! Was supposed to be writing an article about last weekend's events but got a bit sidetracked. The full story, with pictures is at the preceding link.

Muted Magic

This one took a lot of "tweaking" to get "right". The result reminds me of membranous wings.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my one student called me to tell me her Science exam went well and she got a job that she applied for. She was very excited about both the job and the exam. It is really great when students take the time to let me know how things went.

Imminent Fall

If you squint and use your imagination, this one looks a bit like a tree. The orange bit at the bottom RHS is the trunk (or not).

Today's Gratitude Item: Being appreciated by one of my private students. It was their last lesson today as the "big exam" is tomorrow. Said student gave me a "Christmas / Thank You" gift which was very unexpected but very nice indeed. It really is the thought that counts!

Old Gold

Made from scratch, uploaded in a hurry.

Today's Gratitude Item: An absolutely perfect evening. Tonight was the "big night" in that it was the Black Tie Dinner to celebrate the centenary of the Auckland Chevra Kadisha. The entire evening was totally brilliant. The food was great, the speeches were well done and everyone was really, really nice. All in all a totally brilliant event organised by a group of incredibly dedicated people.

Path of Sorrow

Its lonely, spiky and almost colourless.

At some point, everyone gets to walk down it.

Today's Gratitude Item: The Friday night dinner (Shabbaton) that I attended last night. My "old" Rabbi, who has moved on to greater things in Sydney was the guest of honour and he was amazing. I heard it said that he was the best he has ever been. His speech was totally brilliant and I was most privileged to attend this memorable occasion.

Fragile Illusion

Sometimes life is but a fragile illusion. Other times, it is painfully real.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the small change I have been accumulating recently is finally being spent! Turns out that stuff is great for bus fare and paying parking.

Rigid Flow

This one is dedicated to Codename Emrys and is coloured blue in his honour. He knows why. Thanks again :)

For those of you wondering why I did not post yesterday, my Internet was down again for the second time in as many weeks. Frustrating but true. Its working again now *obviously*.

Today's Gratitude Item: Whitakers now make 62% cocoa / coffee chocolate, as in the chocolate has 62% cocoa and 8% coffee in it. Its very, very good. Texture is "interesting" - its a bit chunky rather than smooth. I simply love it.

Light Chains

Made from scratch late on a Sunday night. Get the full effect by taking a look at the large version (simply click on the image below).

Today's Gratitude Item: Warm slippers. Its surprisingly chilly at the moment! It may be November but it certainly does not feel like summer over here.

Weird Zig Zag Thingy

The title says it all.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting work tomorrow! With the seniors on study leave, everyday worked at this point is a bonus. One days work = a lot of downloads on Shutterstock!

Marble Army

All lined up in a row
Its off to war we go
We all look the same
Called by number, not by name.

Feeling blue, feeling sad?
Sometimes life is just too bad.
At least if we win this game,
We will get eternal fame.

*or not*

Today's Gratitude Item: Having some rather cool friends who like me for who I am.

Celtic Weave

Its not quite Celtic knot work, but its close.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting four downloads on a particular graphic on Shutterstock. The graphic concerned looks like a Christmas Tree with lights, especially if you use your imagination and squint, which explains the large number of downloads. It was only after I stopped trying to make Christmas stuff, that something "seasonal" appeared in Apo. The only question is what is a good Jewish girl like me doing creating graphics like that? Answer, it just happened and its a good thing cause people are prepared to pay to use it. Why fight it?

Brown Paper

Reminded me of scrunched up brown paper. It could also be a dead leaf though.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting my walking done early in the morning. That left the rest of the day free to "play" on my computer. It felt really decadent to spend all day "playing" but it was fun! With the senior students now on study leave, I am pretty much on holiday. That is one of the joys of being a substitute teacher.

Diamond Dance

This is what happens when you take a square dance and rotate it by 90 degrees.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being invited to be a journalist for the upcoming Chevra Kadisha Centennial events. This is an amazing opportunity which involves going to a number of cool events over a three day period and then writing about the experience for the magazine that goes out to the members of our Shul. The only problem is that I am not a trained journalist and am now having one of those "I wish I knew what I was doing" moments. Happily, there will also be some real journalists covering the event so I am not totally on my own. It should be fun!

Beach Chain

The things in the middle looked like seashells to me. They could also be the links of a chain. Hence the name of this piece.

Today's Gratitude Item: My dad. As in, he took some of my fractal greeting cards to work and managed to sell sixteen of them to his workmates! My dad is a generally amazing human being and I was really grateful that he was prepared to take my "stuff" into his office and sell it.

Metal Weave

Done from scratch. Got "lucky" with the gradient. Its a cross between a waffle and the thing that actually makes the waffle.

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to get most of the stuff on my list done. Being relatively up to date is always a good thing.

Monday, November 13, 2006

At least this one was easy to name.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the internet is finally back. I missed posting yesterday because it was down for so long! Was going through serious Internet withdrawal and it was not fun. Am pathetically happy that things are back to normal now.

Turns out that the "issue" was a telecom fault, rather than a problem with my system. Pity it took the guys at maxnet (my ISP) so long to figure it out. They had me changing my router settings and generally pulling my hair out before they finally thought to check if the issue was not with me! Then because they told me to change my settings, even when the issue with Telecom was solved, my system was still not working because the settings were wrong and the person I spoke to could not help me to fix it. Finally called my brother who was able to get me sorted in around two minutes!

Strange Lights

Subtle weaving in the night
Not too lose and not too tight
Gently rendered in the dark
and signed with a watermark.

Today's Gratitude Item: Time to recharge in improved weather. The recent cold snap was too reminiscent of winter for my liking!

Peacock Feathers

Is it just me, or are these almost metallic? I know peacocks don't actually look like this, but wouldn't it be cool if they did?

Today's Gratitude Item: Being "Bible Champion" for the week. Remember how I won the Bible challenge thingy yesterday? Well, the person on today did not manage to beat my score so that made me this weeks champion. The prize is $100.00 worth of book vouchers which is great. I am so happy :)

Autumn Sky

Presenting a random graphic with a strange name. Its Autumn up North, hence the colour choice.

Today's Gratitude Items: Its been one of those days where I have a list of good stuff that happened. So here goes...

  • Won this mornings "Bible Challenge" on the radio (long story).
  • Had a good interview for a job (to be a "regular" teacher next year, instead of a substitute).
  • Picked up my greeting cards for selling at the craft fair on the weekend.
  • Internet working again after a brief period of stubbornness.

Blue Web

Presenting an "old style" Apo graphic, because sometimes its good to revisit "basic" techniques.

Today's Gratitude Item: That Beta Blogger has an "underline in red" spell checker. It is making my life a lot easier!

Sea Shell Row

Row of sea shells made from "scratch" in Apophysis. Uses the same "tweaked" params as "Gold Ribbon".

Today's Gratitude Item: My "baby" is back! Its pathetic how not having a computer for two whole days was so unsettling but now that its fixed, I am once again relieved and happy. The great thing is that my super dedicated brother got the job done so fast. Thanks bro!!

Monday, November 06, 2006

Gold Ribbon

Made from scratch in Apo. I know it looks complex but this one was easy to generate and quick to render.

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to get coloured envelopes for the greeting cards that I will be selling at a local craft fair in the near future. Got said cards from Envelope World who were wonderful. They were helpful, friendly and their prices were very reasonable. I know this because I spent a large part of the morning on the phone trying to find the best deal.

Loopy Blue

Too much of this stuff can make one quite loopy!

Today's Gratitude Item: That my brother is prepared to help fix my "baby". This involves reinstalling Windows and hoping that everything goes OK from there. The only "dodgy bit" is the fact that I will need to turn of Automatic Updates as I lost my genuiune CD and don't feel like going through the hassle of explaing to Microsoft (again) how their system tends to "die" periodically and that my copy of Windows XP was genuine until it died and needed to be resurrected etc. On days like today, I seriously hate Microsoft!

Pacific Braid

Made with Apophysis (of course). The cross / flower design is an icon of the pacific, hence the name of this piece. The gold / purple colouring is more due to luck than anything else.

Today's Gratitude Item: That most of my important computer stuff can be accessed online. With my "baby" still playing up, its good to know that my precious graphics are stored online (in two different places) and my email can be checked online. I have backups on CD as well. Computer will be fixed at some point. Windows can be a real pain. Enough said.

Christmas Balls

I don't celebrate Christmas, but for those who do, please enjoy these Christmas Balls. I have a feeling that would look quite spectacular on a tree somewhere. Its not too early to put them up either! Even though Christmas is two months away, the advertising / madness has already begun over here. It will get worse before it gets better (deep sigh).

Today's Gratitude Item: A great day at work. Getting work is always good. Getting work close to home with lovely classes is great!

Thursday, November 02, 2006

Extreme Weave

Is it me, or does this one look like someone's been knitting?

Today's Gratitude Item: That I don't have to sit exams. The exam season is coming up and my students are all very busy studying. I feel sorry for them! Next week is looking quite busy tutoring wise due to the upcoming exams.

Angel Chorus

Made from scratch. Reminds me of a line of Angels for some reason. Must be the "hats" and "wings".

Today's Gratitude Item: It would be more accurate to say "items" today. Below is the list:

  • I have a job interview for a long term relieving position (in Maths) at a school that I really love
  • Have already sold 15 of my fractal greeting cards and they are not yet printed (but I am taking orders)
  • I got a really cute / funny thank you gift from someone that was really unexpected

The only bad news is that my computer is not healthy at all and is refusing to start up properly *still*. What can one say but "aaargh". Looks like I may need to reinstall Windows.
