Silky Spoonbill

Living proof that G-d has a sense of humour! I know the beak is highly functional but it makes me smile.

Today's Gratitude Item: A new chair. To be more specific, a gorgeous new recliner that is super comfy! Only problem with said chair is that once one is in it, one does not want to get up.

Tropical Toucan

Comes in a variety of colours :)

Today's Gratitude Item: The start of a long weekend. The main reason that I love the Queen is that we get to celebrate her birthday. Even though her actual birthday is in April. Better late than never is what I say.

Sunshine Cockatoo

When I visited Sydney, we got to see these in the wild. It was very cool! Dedicated to all those Australians out there.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting to my minimum payout amount over at Shutterstock. The May day and Memorial day holidays impacted on my sales this month and I was not sure that I'd make it. With three* days to go, I'm officially "safe"

*SS is based in the US which means that time differences make it 3 days, and not 2.

Gold Monkey

This little critter is about to leap into the unknown. Hope he know what he's doing!

Today's Gratitude Item: Having a partner at dance who knew what they were doing. My regular partner is away for 7 weeks and its horrible not having her around! I really wish we could attract more guys to Israeli dance, but that might be asking too much (insert deep sigh here).

Rainforest Fruit

This guy is hanging around hoping for some food to eat.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a reader / writer for one of my students at short notice. Said student has a broken arm and an assessment tomorrow so they will need help writing. Being able to find someone willing to do this on short notice was a huge relief.

Gorilla in the Mist

This gentle giant looks like he's about to eat my signature!!

Today's Gratitude Item: Learning how to project what is on my graphing calculator onto the whiteboard so that the entire class can see what they need to do. Very handy.

Green Gibbon

In the company of some blue butterflies. Alternate title is "Hanging Out". I really like how this one turned out.

Today's Gratitude Item: Bendy pencils. Yes folks, they have now come out with pencils that can be bent! Said items are made of a softish plastic case with some kind of "lead" inside. They work well but can be a tad difficult to sharpen. Of course they don't break. They're extra long too and because they bend, its easy to fit them into smaller pencil cases. I found a pack of 8 glitter pencils for $1.00. Methinks thats a brilliant bargain.

As in the native of Madagascar. Not to be confused with the common cat, although at first glance their shapes are very similar.

My regular readers may notice a slight change to the format of this blog. I've gotten rid of a lot of the "rubbish" down at the bottom of the page and have replaced it with Ads from Google. This is all part of the grand experiment that is this blog. It will be interesting to see if the Ads at the bottom equate to any revenue at all.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting my very own paper copy of the book Intelligent Design of Multi-Dimensional Space. This is exciting because my artwork appears as the background on the cover and the author not only asked permission to use my work, but went to the expense of snail mailing me a copy of the book when it was ready. He also personally signed the copy with a really lovely note and acknowledged me as the artist in two different places in the book. What a buzz!

These animals are pretty impressive, especially when in large herds. Watching a large herd cross the road in the Kruger National park was quite an experience. It took quite a while and they left rather a lot of mess behind.

Today's Gratitude Item: The "auto trace" feature in Illustrator. It can be very helpful, although it should probably be used sparingly.

Thursday, May 22, 2008

According to wikipedia, the hippo's closest living relatives are cetaceans (whales etc). I'm wondering how they got to that?

Today's Gratitude Item: Learning how to use the photocopier at work to scan multiple pages and then email them as a .pdf file - all in one easy step. I'm sure that many of you have been doing this for ages but for me, this was a first and its an amazing time saver.

Secretary Bird

So named because of the unique feather arrangement on the head. The thing looks like an old fashioned secretary, ready to take dictation.

Today's Gratitude Item: A "non-contact" last period. Being part time, this means that I am allowed to go home early. It does not happen often, but when it does, its lovely.

Tuesday, May 20, 2008

Gives new meaning to the saying "A face only a mother could love".

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting my broken headlight fixed. We realised it was "out" last night, so I came home via the mechanic. Quick, easy and not too expensive.

Monday, May 19, 2008

Sometimes being rather tall can be inconvenient. Ask any giraffe! Guess its a good thing that I'm short. The alternate title for this one is "Bottom's Up"!

Today's Gratitude Item: Cheap potatoes. With the price of food and fuel continually increasing, finding cheap potatoes made a welcome change.

Open Wide

Dedicated to all those dentists out there!

Today's Gratitude Item: I'm almost ready for dance camp in Wellington in October, as in my hotel has finally been booked. Its close to the venue and should be great. The only thing I have not done is registered for camp, but that's because the forms are not yet available :)

Saturday, May 17, 2008

Top speed, according to Wikipedia is 120 kph. This creature can go from 0-100 in in 3 seconds! That's better than some supercars.

Today's Gratitude Item: Not having to do any "school stuff" over the weekend. These days, this tends to be the exception rather than the rule.

Friday, May 16, 2008

I only found out after creating the graphic that howling behaviour in wolves is most common during the twilight hours.

Today's Gratitude Item: Its Friday!! I've needed a weekend since Tuesday :)

Thursday, May 15, 2008

According to Wikipedia, leopards and panthers can be distinguished by the length of their tails. Turns out that leopard tails are shorter than those of panthers. You learn something new everyday.

Today's Gratitude Item: A small bit of "catch up" time after a truly insane week.

Wild Dog

I prefer the domesticated dog but must confess to being fascinated by the wild variety.

Today's Gratitude Item: A raise over at Shutterstock. I now get the princely sum of 33c (US) per download. This is a 10 percent increase and whilst it may not seem like much, it does add up quickly.

Tuesday, May 13, 2008

Dedicated to my dad. Lions are his favorite animal. I don't know why this is.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting the Level 2 Statistics resource that I was working on completed. This one was a challenge but its looking good and will hopefully be really helpful.

Jackal at Dawn

Dedicated to my brother. His favourite wild animal when were kids was the jackal. Must have something to do with the spring in their step.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my presentation to my colleagues in our faculty meeting this afternoon went well.

Sunday, May 11, 2008

Also known as a Gnu . As in, what's Gnu?

Today's Gratitude Item: Our youngest volunteer at the library is back from Israel! She brought me a gorgeous necklace and some ear rings. Most unexpected and deeply appreciated. Having my helper back has made me very happy.

Saturday, May 10, 2008

This one is recycled from a while back, but the stripes seemed to match the fractal.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to return my one of my jumpers and exchange it for a different one. The "defective" jumper looked really beautiful but left a trail of pink fluff everywhere. And I do mean everywhere! The replacement one is a totally different and won't "fluff" (different yarn).

Friday, May 09, 2008

This antelope is one of the most distinctive in South Africa. Making this series was bitter sweet for me, as I miss the holidays we used to have at the Kruger National Park.

Today's Gratitude Item: That it was raining when I left school today. If it was not raining, then I would have left my umbrella at school rather than bringing it home!

Yom Ha'atzmaut 5768

Both the images below were created for Yom Ha'atzmaut. Its only appropriate to have two images on such a special occasion!

You can access the large version of these graphics by clicking on the images above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Remembering how to generate a series of random numbers on the Texas Instruments that we use at work. Considering that I last did this a year ago, its a minor miracle that I remembered the process.

Yom HaZikaron 5768

This stamp was designed to remember Israel's fallen soldiers and civilian victims of terror. Thanks to Ze'ev for the "Star of David Stamp" idea and his help with the Hebrew and to Becky Liao for supplying me with the correct Chinese ideogram.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to get most of my "school work" done. After an extremely busy start to the term, it feels like things are finally getting under control.

Tuesday, May 06, 2008

I only like Elephant from a *very* safe distance. My family all know why :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Left overs :) I don't really need to spell this one out do I?

Monday, May 05, 2008

Probably one of the most amazing antelope on the planet, these creatures survive on minimal water, hence the "desert" colours in this image.

Today's Gratitude Item: Mobile phones. They can be very handy little devices! Its hard to imagine there was a time when it was difficult to catch most people on the move.

Sunday, May 04, 2008

See in "real life", these are really impressive animals. I remain fascinated by the horns.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being included in this weeks Haveil Havalin. My Yom HaShoah image was featured as the first item in the post, complete with the information about the graphic. Its nice to be noticed :)

Saturday, May 03, 2008

These were a common site when we used to the Kruger National Park. Oddly, people who are not familiar with the species sometimes get Impala confused with Springbok.

Today's Gratitude Item: That I'd partially saved the work that I was doing when Illustrator crashed on me. Note to self: Save more often.

Friday, May 02, 2008

As a kid, these were my favourite animal. Probably because they are very gentle and real easy to spot.

Today's Gratitude Item: Scheduled posting. This is a cool new feature that blogger has that allows one to set the date and time that a post should be published. It means being able to publish stuff, even when you are not near a computer. I'll probably try this out at the next dance camp but pre-writing my posts and then seeing if they get published at the right time.

Skate Lanes

When ice skating, its important to stay out of the way of other skaters. That's when the concept of having "lanes" comes in handy.

Today's Gratitude Item: Not having to tutor today :) I was meant to but the student canceled which meant more time to play.
