Hockey Girl

Not exactly a game I enjoy. There's too much risk of someone hitting me rather than the ball!

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a key to the Science Faculty buildings. This means I'll be able to easily access my classes for next semester. Its all rather exciting.

Shield Mosaic

Graphic inspired by my newish slippers - I probably should get out more.

Today's Gratitude Item: The neighbours went to Australia and brought me back a kakuro book. These puzzles are a nice change from Sudoku. The book has hints and tips on how to solve them and starts off easy. So far, so good.

Blue Feather Bear

Finally got Apophysis to cooperate again :) The bear (whose name is Max) is based on a gift that my dad got for me when I was a kid.

Today's Gratitude Item: I'm almost finished my first Stats assignment. Only three questions to go - am amazed at how long its taken.

Zeev's Rose

This one is for Zeev. Its yellow and if you squint, its *almost* a Star of David!

Today's Gratitude Item: Morning muffins. In an effort to increase attendance at Friday morning staff meeting, muffins were provided. Needless to say, it turns out that I can be bribed :)

Thursday, June 26, 2008

More specifically a ground hornbill. These surprisingly ugly birds somehow always manage to move around with grave dignity.

Today's Gratitude Item: A lighter day than normal. It was nice to be able to catch up with work and go home early!

Wednesday, June 25, 2008

This one is investigating a spiral that appeared on the beach.

Today's Gratitude Item: What I like to call "The Nutty Squirrel Game". This is an amazing little game which proved to be quite successful in helping my students get the hang of linear patterns.

Blue Flower

The bird in this picture is a Tui. These are native to New Zealand and have a very distinctive call.

Today's Gratitude Item: Not having to go out tonight in the horrible weather. Hopefully said weather will improve tomorrow.

Monday, June 23, 2008

Sea Gull

Complete with fractal beach.

Today's Gratitude Item: Figuring out how to change the symbol for outliers on the box plots generated by MINITAB (the statistics software my course uses). This is an extremely small thing, but the default cross symbol was bothering me, so I changed it to dots instead.

Crested Crane

The silouette here is of a Crested Crane. Turns out this is the only crane that can roost in trees. I've only ever seen them on the ground though.

Today's Gratitude Item: A fax machine that can be used as a photocopier - very convenient.

Saturday, June 21, 2008

According to Wikipedia, an old superstition claims that storks were harbingers of happiness and prosperity. Does that mean that putting this image on my desktop will make good things happen? Its tempting to give it a try.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally managing to download the statistics software that I need for my course. Happily, said software seems easy enough to use.

Hungry Emu

What is it with these birds trying to eat my signature?? Perhaps it tastes good.

Today's Gratitude Item: The impossible quiz. I worked with some Year 12 students today and they told me about it. It provided some light relief in a heavy day.

Thursday, June 19, 2008

Twighlight Owl

Perhaps I should have named this one "Web of Stars". The interconnectedness of it appeals.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting through an unusually busy day! Today was spent rushing from one thing to the next and its good to be able to finally stop "running". Hopefully tomorrow will not be quite so insane.

Wing Fyre

Sometimes bright colours can work rather well. This one reminds me of part of a butterfly wing.

Today's Gratitude Item: Lots of people turning up to dance class! It was lovely to have such a large group and the atmosphere was really wonderful. This is one of the times when "more" really is "merrier".

Tuesday, June 17, 2008

Dedicated to all those pumpkin lovers out there!

Today's Gratitude Item: USB storage devices. Quick, easy and convenient. The only problem is that they can be easy to lose.

Monday, June 16, 2008

Blue Breeze

This one has the "ocean / wave" thing happening, hence the choice of the Stilt.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being in demand :) My colleagues at work keep on hoping I'll be the one to "sub" for their classes if they need to be away. This could have something to do with the fact that I can teach the Math, rather than just "babysit" their students.

Sunday, June 15, 2008

The background looked like a fishing net of sorts, so a bird that feeds off fish was a logical inclusion. Today's random thought: One good tern, deserves another!

Today's Gratitude Item: Figuring out binomial distribution. Its easy when you know how! Of course "getting it" took a considerable amount of time / effort. Its good to be reminded how some students feel when they are grappling with new concepts.

Saturday, June 14, 2008

I recall that pheasants have been known to eat grain, so this little critter should feel right at home with the large grain stalk close by.

Today's Gratitude Item: Waking up early, realising its a Saturday and then going back to sleep for another hour or so. That has not happened for the longest time - usually I automatically sleep in on the weekend. Guess the stress at work is having an impact on my internal clock!

Friday, June 13, 2008

Golden Eagle

Is it just me or does the background look like part of a bird's wing?

Today's Gratitude Item: Free lunch. Well, sort of free. Had a meeting at lunchtime and food was provided. Said food was really lovely.

Thursday, June 12, 2008

Turns out that there are quite a few Lourie species in sub Saharan Africa. I've been privileged to see the Knysna Louries (green) and the more common Gray Lourie first hand. In fact, we used to get Gray Louries visiting our garden from time to time. They have a very distinctive call and are sometimes called "Go Away" birds.

Today's Gratitude Item: Making progress on my Statistics study. I'm doing this extramural paper and finding the time to work through the course is a constant challenge. Managed to get a fair bit done today, but it took ages.

Pastel Paint

Hidden amongst these fractal petals is a humming bird. Am particularly pleased with this image.

Today's Gratitude Item: Leftover pasta. I did not think that there would be leftovers for me but there was. Hot and filling on a cold winters day.

Tuesday, June 10, 2008

I love these birds. They may be flightless but they are very powerful. A well aimed kick from those legs can be fatal.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the attendance software at school can work out our attendance fractions for us. Last time we did reports, we had to do this manually and it was not fun. Happily this time round, the process is a lot simpler. If only the system would magically generate the comments for us ....

Penguin Portal

This one was fun to make. The portal is just the right size for the penguin. For some crazy reason, it reminds me of James Bond. Must be the circle and the "penguin suit".

Today's Gratitude Item: My second hand text for my stats course arrived in the mail today and its in perfect condition. Now I can get on with my studies (yay).

Shavuot 5768

With Pesach a distant memory, Shavout has finally arrived. If you want to know more about this festival, please see the Wikipedia Article on the subject.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Not getting rained on this morning! It was too close for comfort but we made it home and dry (literally) - thankfully no running was involved.

Saturday, June 07, 2008

Peacock Abstract

Almost as colourful as the real thing.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting to catch up with old friends.

Friday, June 06, 2008

Dawn Heron

This is one of my favorite waterbirds. In my mind, it looks regal.

Today's Gratitude Item: A day that went really smoothly! I managed to have fun at school, which, given the amount of pressure we are all feeling at the moment is quite a feat.

Thursday, June 05, 2008

Flamingo (Recycled)

The flamingo shape is recycled. I think it goes well with this particular background.

Today's Gratitude Item: A kiss from a colleague! Before you all get too excited, said kiss was of the Hershies (chocolate) variety and they were being handed out like candy.

Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Primary Parrot

The bright feathers of the parrot are echoed in background. This one was a bit of a surprise when it appeared.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finishing marking my Y10 Maths exams. I still have a long way to go though. Now I need to allocate grades and then write their reports. I also have Y12 internals to mark. Sometimes being a teacher can be a massive amount of work.

Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Alien Horizon

This one might be a bit "out there" - especially as far as the colours go. I think I like it but am not sure. Time will tell.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to order second hand textbooks through Amazon. Hopefully said book will arrive in the not too distant future.

Monday, June 02, 2008

Whilst this one might look like a woodpecker, it actually feeds off insects and worms.

Today's Gratitude Item: A very productive day. Not having to go in to work meant being able to get a whole lot of stuff done.

Sunday, June 01, 2008

King Fisher

Complete with a fish.

Today's Gratitude Item: Ear muffs. I've got a lovely pair of black ones that look great and keep my ears warm. That's the good news. The bad news is that my dad might need them more than I do.
