Harbour Bridge (Auckland, New Zealand)

The bridge is based on the real thing, the background - not so much. I'm pleased with the overall effect.

Today's Gratitude Item: This is the last weekend that I will have to spend studying Statistics. My exam is on Tuesday and I can't wait for it to be over.

Star Tower

The building on the right is Auckland's "Sky Tower". Apparently the view from the top is pretty amazing. I would not know as they charge a fair bit of money if you want to partake. For the truly insane, the opportunity to bungee jump off the top of this edifice is also an option.

Today's Gratitude Item: One of my students got Merit on her probability internal. It was a long, arduous process for a number of reasons and I was relieved that we got there in the end.

Raging Tide

Could not create an appropriate illustration to go with this one. That is probably for the best. It looks just fine as it is.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the week is over half way through - I love four day weeks! Pity that I have so much work to get done between now and Friday.

Belated Work :)

Simchat Torah is when we finish reading the Torah and promptly start over again, hence the job of learning never really comes to an end. This billboard will be recognised by Kiwis and the occasional Aussie as a take on a popular Beer billboard campaign. In New Zealand, when we say "Yeah right!", it means "we don't believe you".

The image is somewhat belated as I simply forgot to post it at the appropriate time (Wednesday last week). Life got too busy! Still, better late then never.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting my ipod to work for dance class. Once we figured out what went where, we could play the music through the speakers. Shuffle function was as extremely fun.

Ice Diatoms

I've had a "thing" for Diatoms since University when we got to look at them under a microscope. The ones we observed where all different and very beautiful. The above is the fractal version.

Today's Gratitude Item: Arriving home from an amazing weekend. Dance camp was really fantastic. We're all pretty tired but its worth it! All the dances that were taught were beautiful and it was great to catch up with friends from around the country.

Cop Car

The "badges" on this reminded me of police shields. Its a bit of a stretch, but the overall image works.

Today's Gratitude Item: Dance camp is coming! In fact its this weekend - which means that I won't be blogging until Monday night.

Hit It

Presenting an original take on badminton.

Today's Gratitude Item: I told my one of my private students about my entry in the Art Awards and she made up a bunch of miniature fliers to distribute at her school asking people to vote for me. She does not go to the school where I teach and the fact that she is more than happy to approach total strangers on my behalf blew me away. The most interesting thing about this competition has been how people react to my request for votes. The responses range from amazing to extremely nice. I've put a link to the awards in my byline in the hope that visitors to my blog will take the hint :)

Paint Possibility

This one reminded me of paint being mixed together. It was fun to make.

Today's Gratitude Item: That people have been incredibly nice to me. I'm amazed how many of my friends, contacts and colleagues have been extremely keen to vote for "Woven Together" over at the YPG Art Awards page. The response so far has been extremely encouraging with pretty much everyone saying really nice things about the work (and of course voting for it). Right now, life is good.

Funky Boarder

This one is filed in the "Interesting" category. Not sure if I like it or not.

Today's Gratitude Item: Making it as a finalist in the Yellow Pages Art Awards (for the Auckland Region). If (when) I win, my work will feature on the front of the Auckland phone book. Want to help me realise this rather strange dream? You can vote for me by clicking on the preceding link. The image you want to vote for is called "Woven Together" - the one on the far right.

Skateboard Garden

Finding places to skateboard can be a challenge, but this is getting ridiculous! No wonder this guy is not having much fun.

Today's Gratitude Item: The return of my "muse". Was struggling to create decent Apo images and then, suddenly, it started working again. Must be because I was meant to by studying for my upcoming exam, rather than creating fractals. Happily, the two are not mutually exclusive.

Blue Boarder

This background is the result of a new script that I found in the course of my travels. Took a very long time to render.

Today's Gratitude Item: Starting to get the hang of probability. It really helps if one draws a Venn diagram for events that are not independent :)

Tough Course

Things don't always go smoothly in life. Sometimes some random fractal 3D spheres get in the way!

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a recent stats assignment (from my correspondence course) remarked. My grade improved from 79% to 86%. Turns out that my regular lecturer did not mark the assignments and the person who did missed the intent of the mark scheme in places. I still made some rather dumb mistakes, but I'm a lot happier with my reassessed grade.

Cute Cat II

I recycled the cat's head from a previous image. Not too sure if this one "works".

Today's Gratitude Item: Spare keys! Always useful when the original keys mysteriously disappear.

Cute Cat

The cat is not too bad for someone who "can't draw". This is the first time I've drawn a cat "from scratch".

Today's Gratitude Item: That my lecturer is prepared to revisit my 3rd Stats assignment. I was disappointed with my grade and whilst some of the errors were mine, it seemed that the marking schedule was rather harsh in places. Regardless of the outcome, I did learn from my mistakes *hopefully*. The experience has also been a good reminder of how my students must feel on a regular basis.

Terrific Tortoise

Took a while to get the shell to match the background, but it was worth it.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting assignments from all of my students. The "deadline" was before the holidays but too many of my students did not submit anything due to various other pressures. Eventually I emailed parents and cc'd the students concerned. Happily this strategy worked really well.

Sukkot 5769

The major feature of Sukkot is the building of, and dwelling in a Sukkah. Sukkot is also our harvest festival, hence the "fruit" reference.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Google logos :) How else would I know that today is the 50th Anniversary of Paddington Bear?

Flower Cheer

Spring has finally sprung! That's something worth cheering about.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finishing my last Statistics assignment! Now I've just got to get through the exam in four weeks time and it will be all over.

Say Cheese

Dedicated to all those cheese lovers out there :)

Today's Gratitude Item: New, extremely comfortable headphones to go with my ipod. Said headphones are the "hook around the ear" variety and they are simply great.

Gold Car Go

I'm hoping that the background ball will sell on Shutterstock as a Christmas decoration.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting lots of bits and pieces done. It feels good to get most of the "small things" out of the way.

Thursday, October 09, 2008

Spaghetti Car

The perfect vehicle for navigating through Spaghetti junctions!

Today's Gratitude Item: That this year the fast was easy. This might have something to do with the overcast weather. Whatever the reason, I'm grateful.

Yom Kippur 5769

Yom Kippur is often cited as the most Holy day in the Jewish Calendar. Its on this day that we ask to be written into the Book of Life. Take a look at the print on the LHS in the large version of this image :)

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Flowers from a friend who remembered that it is my birthday in the near future. Unexpected and very lovely.

Gold Class

Its a luxury sedan with a background to match.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the roofing guy came and fixed the roof before the storm! It was rather windy this afternoon and he must have done a good job because we did not hear the roof at all :)

Monday, October 06, 2008

Green Sea

Complete with an appropriate vehicle for the perfect day at the beach. All that's missing is the sand.

Today's Gratitude Item: A scanner and origami where you use money to make the model :) The only downside is that kiwi money is plasticised meaning it does not fold nicely like traditional paper bills. That is where tape and my heavy statistics text book come in handy.

Curve 907

Named because it was created at 9.07am

Curve 907

The wallpaper version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: That I still have a week of holiday left. Being able to sleep in tomorrow is something that makes me extremely happy :)

Orange Diagonal

Careful zooming can have some rather pleasing results :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Summer is coming. I noticed that one of the large trees outside has started to get tiny green leaves. Its great that winter is firmly on the way out :) Its taken about a week to get used to the longer days, but having more light in the "evening" is great.

Go Green

This one is environmentally friendly - its green :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Creating an algebra "useful sheet" for my students did not take as long as feared. Its getting easier to create these resources, especially as many of the images used in them can be recycled with minor adjustments.

Thursday, October 02, 2008

Gold Cheer

She's celebrating a golden moment.

Today's Gratitude Item: Progress. Finally got a long overdue project almost finished. Which means one step closer to being paid for work done. Sometimes clients get bogged down with "stuff" and web design projects sit on the back burner. This was one of those times.

Daisy Dog

This doggie has wondered into my fractal garden. Its OK though - he's cute.

Today's Gratitude Item: A spare loaf of bread in the freezer. Without it, breakfast tomorrow would have been rather a sad affair.
