Relax

Sometimes creating fractals can be rather relaxing :) Needless to say this is an extremely appropriate image for a Sunday afternoon.

Relax :)

The wallpaper version can be downloaded at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Even though I had an extremely rare "zero download day" over at Shutterstock (due to Thanks giving I think), I still made $60 US from my art today. Someone liked my Apophysis work enough that they were willing to pay for the params. I charged $30.00 per param and sold them as a non-exclusive license meaning my client gets to use the files and I can still sell the images generated on SS in due course.

Pop Up

Its amazing the sort of thing that pops up (literally) around the not so humble park bench.

Pop Up

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding $4.00 on my walk on Friday afternoon. The money in question was in the form of two $2.00 coins that I spotted on the road. This is a new record for us. I think G-d was laughing because earlier in the day, my dad changed $2.00 of coins into 10c pieces for the wishing well*. He had considered changing $5.00 but the bank did not have the nice shiny coins we like to put down the wishing well. He even joked to my mom that it would not be enough - turns out he was right.

*All the money we find on our walks goes into the wishing well for child cancer. The wishing well is a cool money collecting contraption and watching the coins spiral down into its center is a cheap thrill - especially when its basically found money that it going down there. This week we found a total of $5.40 - which is our record

Two Palms

This one was fun to make. The background is intended for another project but it fitted the palm trees quite nicely - thus another wallpaper is born.

Two Palms

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being asked to lead a session on Geogebra for my colleagues at school. I'm looking forward to it. I think our IT trainer was a bit worried that I'd be to technical though - she said to keep it simple. It should be fun though.

Fire in the Hole

Inspired by a friend of mine who at some point will be training with live grenades so that he can go on peace keeping mission in the not too distant future. Hope he's careful!

Fire in the Hole

Today's Gratitude Item: One more day until the weekend!! This week has seemed longer and more stressful than most and I'm looking forward to having some "down time".

Cone Weave

Another in my "couple walking" series.

Cone Weave

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting some really good reference shots of the various animals at the zoo. Not having to pay to get in was an added bonus.

Sunset Stroll

Nothing is nicer than walking with a loved one, just because you can.

Sunset Stroll

Today's Gratitude Item: Fine weather which means my 8th graders went to the beach leaving me free to mark 9th grade exams / write reports. It was an extremely productive day. Also, I had an interview for a job. Mainly I'm glad that its over! Apparently they will make a decision within the next seven days so whilst waiting is not fun, at least the wait will not be prolonged.

Fire Fighters

That is one hot training session!

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting *almost* half way through marking my Y10 exams. The downside is that it has gotten rather late.

Raging Inferno

This one is so hot, its bound to make the news.

Raging Inferno

Today's Gratitude Item: Rain :) Its been a while since its rained so having the wet weather return was actually a good thing. I'm hoping that it clears up by Wednesday, otherwise our trip to the zoo may be rather soggy.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my parents have been married for 36 years and are still in love. In today's world this seems to be the exception rather than the norm and I'm lucky to have such special people in my life.

Shuttlecocks

If you use your imagination, the background could be these guys in full flight. Did I mention that a significant amount of imagination might be required?

Shuttlecocks

The wallpaper version can be seen at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Discovering that I don't see my junior class for their double period next week as they are going to the beach instead. This is a win-win situation :) To be fair, they are a nice lot - the extra time is really a gift as I will have a stack of exams to grade and reports to write.

Ghost Ship

Made "from scratch" in Apo. The blue fern fronds are doing double duty as waves.

Ghost Ship

The wallpaper version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to loan a hat from a colleague. Usually I don't end up with playground duty but I did today. Thus the need for a hat. We are pretty strict about the kids wearing hats when outside and that means duty teachers have to wear them too (its the whole "walk the walk" thing).

Perfect Day

This one took a record 7 hours, 54 minutes and 36 seconds to render (in large size). It was worth it though.

Perfect Day

The wallpaper version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being up to date with my reports. It was great not having to teach any classes today due to exams / study leave. It did feel weird though.

Flower Child

New meaning for an old concept. Look at the large version and you'll notice there are more flowers in this one that you see at first glance.

Flower Child

Today's Gratitude Item: Being invited for a job interview! Said interview will happen next week and I'm excited about the prospect. The process for finding work for next year has been rather difficult and, with the exception of next week's interview, all my applications have been met with a long silence followed by an eventual "Thanks but no thanks" letter. Thus being given the opportunity to interview is a step in the right direction.

Ball Boy

Perhaps this little guy finds spheres as fascinating as I do.

Today's Gratitude Item: That I was not the only one who forgot about tutor's meeting this morning. Luckily the Dean forgot too. Even better, she emailed to apologise for not being there before I emailed her for the same reason :) I really should make more of an effort to diarise these meetings. The problem is that its so easy to miss them - we have a lot happening at school at the moment.

Spherical Rain

This rain is certainly out of the ordinary! No wonder the child is fascinated by it.

Today's Gratitude Item: Seeing my Uncle and Cousin from Australia again. It has been a long time since they visited and it was lovely to catch up.

Today's Gratitude Item: Had a great time at an AMA professional development day. It was the first time I've been to one of these days and the workshops were really interesting - especially the one about Geogebra.

Today's Gratitude Item: Google Moon. Its like Google Maps but its for the moon. Used this site with my 8th grade Science students and it was brilliant.

Decorating Blues

This one started off as Christmas decorations (hence the spheres). It did not turn out as expected.

I really should know better than to try and create things for Christmas. It simply never works for me.

Decorating Blues

The wallpaper version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: The editor over at the Western Leader has confirmed that tomorrow he will print a follow up piece to the article that appeared last week about the YPG Art Awards. This time, I'll be featured! Its just in time too - the contest closes midnight tomorrow so people still have a chance to vote if they have not already done so. Obviously publishing this second article is beyond the call of duty on the part of the Western Leader. Its only possible because we managed to find a link between me and the West Auckland community (I used to teach out there). Right now, I'm tempted to ask them to make me into an honorary Westie. Its a pity my local rag, The North Shore Times Advertiser is not as community spirited as those wonderful guys out West!

Lounging Around

Some days its good just to "lounge around" in a favourite chair reading a book. Sadly, life has been far too busy for this indulgence lately.

Lounging Around

The wallpaper version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Discovering that the not so local newspaper I complained about yesterday for not featuring my work in their article on the Yellow Pages Art Awards acted appropriately. Turns out that the issue is with my local newspaper who knew about the competition and failed to publish an article on it. This despite being provided with a large image of my entry and all the relevant information by the competition organisers who encouraged them to cover the event almost a month ago! The frustrating thing is that when I contacted my local newspaper, the senior reporter politely told me that I was too late and implied that I should have let them know sooner - leaving me feeling extremely annoyed with myself for not being more proactive. However, it turns out that they knew about the competition and my entry a long time ago, which means I don't have to beat myself up for being "too late". Sure I still desperately need votes and the situation is still unfair - but at least I know who is responsible. For some strange reason that helps.

Ice Radio

Its what a radio signal looks like on a cold day.

Ice Radio

The wallpaper version can be seen at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding out that the other two finalists in the Yellow Pages Art Awards have had a feature article written about them. My work was totally ignored because I live in the wrong part of town. So why am I grateful? Firstly, if I don't win, at least it will be because it was not a fair fight. Secondly I found out about the article in time to try and do something about it. I'd never have known about it except my dance buddies who live out that way told me the news. The downside is that voting closes on Friday so there is some urgency to getting this problem "fixed".

At it Again

After being shortlisted for the YPG Art Awards, I was encouraged to enter another competition. This one involves designing a Cabin bag for Air New Zealand.

The result is below.

At it Again

Just like the last time, I need public support to advance my design in the competition. Here's the link / voting instructions:

  1. Go to www.designabag.co.nz
  2. Click the register link and fill in all the fields. They need a phone number because when you vote, your name goes in the draw to win a bag. I'm hoping the system does not object to "overseas" numbers!!
  3. Once you have registered, click on this link: www.designabag.co.nz/entry/103/Home_Coming
  4. You will see a row of stars which is partially coloured in, click on the fifth star so that all the stars are orange
  5. Click the submit button

I need all the help I can get with this, so your "5 star vote" is deeply appreciated!

The wallpaper version is at the preceding link.

Edit: This competition has closed. The result will be blogged about in due course.

Edit #2: Thanks to everybody's support, my entry was shortlisted as one of the 10 finalists. Regrettably it was not chosen as the winner. Never mind. Guess its time to move on.

Today's Gratitude Item: Going back to the library! I had not been for about 6 months (whilst studying) and it was wonderful to return.

Harvest Disc

Today's Gratitude Item: A very cool day! I picked up the canvas print of "Woven Together" (my Yellow Pages Group Art Award Entry) today. This piece will be auctioned off in due course and to my considerable relief it looks really good. The finished piece is 80cm by 80cm and shows off the detail perfectly. To make it even better, the wonderful people over at factory frames not only did a brilliant job of printing / framing the piece, they all voted for it as well. Thanks guys!

Balance

Its a nice trick if you can do it.

Balance

Today's Gratitude Item: I needed to make a woven background for a project and one magically appeared in Apo. Said image only needed minor tweaking :) Its good when that happens.

Juggler's Delight

Sometimes keeping everything "up in the air" looks a lot easier than it actually is. At times like this, it helps not to think too hard about the process and just go with the flow.

Today's Gratitude Item: I finished writing one set of reports at school today - it felt good to get that task out of the way.

Aotearoa Dreaming

Aotearoa is widely accepted as being the Maori name for New Zealand. It translates roughly as "Land of the long white cloud".

For me, Aotearoa basically means "Home". At least for now :)

If the picture above looks oddly familiar, its because the face on the RHS features in my entry for the Yellow Pages Group Art Awards.

Today's Gratitude Item: Making progress on my Statistics study. Am feeling almost ready for Tuesday!

Accident!

The graphic was inspired by the accident that I had some time ago. Happily it was not serious in that no one was injured. Car was a write-off though. Still need to sell lots of images over at Shutterstock to make up the loss.

Accident!

The wallpaper version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally managed to organise to get my "Woven Together image" printed on canvas and framed. If you have not yet voted for it, you can do so at the preceding link.
