Measured Pearls

Finding these precious entities would be a lot easier if they were nicely laid out for us.

Today's Gratitude Item: Hitori. Its a logic game that is easier than Sudoku. It can be played on-line and it provides a good way to take a break from the graphics stuff.

Green Grass?

This surface is just a bit too regular to be grass! Whatever it is, the javelin's managed to stay stuck in it.

Today's Gratitude Item: "Geek Weather" - as in steady rain which means there really is no reason to move away from the computer. I have a bunch of images that need to be created, so this kind of weather works for me.

Javelin Thrower

Created in Illustrator after following a tutorial to create the ribbon design. I really struggled with the colouring and composition of this one and am not sure that it was worth the effort. Some days are like that.

Today's Gratitude Item: Cheap tickets to Wellington for dance camp. I'm thinking that paying $49.99 to get there and $69.99 to get back is not too bad. Gotta love competition. Even better, I'm going with Air New Zealand rather than Jet Star - so its all good.

Looking Out

As in , looking out of a fancy window onto the field where the Javelin contest is about to begin.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to view .odt documents using Google docs. Work stuff is done (and saved) in Open Office but I really did not want to download OOS onto my home computer just to be able to view documents made at work. Google docs provided a nifty solution.

Candy Rose

If flowers were candy, this would be a rose.

Today's Gratitude Item: Holidays are finally here! Not too sure if it counts as a proper holiday given the amount of marking / prep that I brought home - but its close enough.

Big Hit

As in this big wall will require a "Big Hit".

Today's Gratitude Item: That school holidays are coming! Only one more day of school to go.

Its a Hit

Hopefully this wallpaper will prove to be a "hit" of a different sort.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally finishing marking my student's Science fair projects. This was a massive task for both the students and me - and whilst parts of it were fun, I'm glad that it is over and we can all move on.

Memories of Earth

Name was inspired by the book which I should probably read at some point.

Today's Gratitude Item: Date loaf at morning tea :) Supplied by one of our lab techs who was a South African but is now officially a kiwi.

Sky Stone

The quote is from Douglas Adams. I was going to blog this image on Towel Day but managed to miss it. Never mind. Its probably for the best that I missed towel day as I've never really had the guts to take a towel in to work on that particular occasion - my students think I'm crazy enough as it is.

Today's Gratitude Item: Thinking of a novel solution to a time consuming problem. Said solution will still take some time to implement, but it should be faster (and more fun) than doing it the obvious way.

Catch It if You Can

Placing the player behind the pattern but in front of the white background worked really well in this case. Gotta love layers!

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally finishing a rather time-consuming part of a project I'm working on. The end is still far away - but at least its now coming in to view.

Hot Spot

Imagine if cricket balls glowed like this in real life. That would certainly make the game a tad more interesting.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my dance teacher had her baby (a boy) yesterday and all is well!

I'm not sure what he's just done - but its not good.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a relatively large number of cardboard box lids from the resource centre. Said box lids were needed for a practical that we get the students to do. They were supposed to bring their own cardboard / lid but I knew many of them would not manage to do this with less than 24 hours notice. It worked well. My colleagues might be a bit distressed to discover that the resource center is now all out of lids but this is one of those times that the early bird gets the worm (or cardboard box lids).

Golden Fall

The quote is mine! I tried finding "Tree" quotes on the 'net but could not find anything that fitted the image particularly well.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being prepared! Some simple planning can make life a lot less stressful than it would otherwise be.

Moon Jumper

The idea that one can jump that much further on the moon has always fascinated me.

Today's Gratitude Item: Some photos that I needed for a special project arrived in my inbox today. Said project is now coming together well and it is exciting to be able to make significant progress.

Way to Throw

The guy throwing a javelin provides an interesting twist on a rather classic Apo image.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my car did not start this morning! The reason the car did not start was that the battery had died and the reason I'm grateful is that I was able to use my mom's car instead. Also, by the time I got home, magic had happened and my car had a brand new battery and was working again. Being stuck at home where there is a spare car is far better than being stuck on the road. I have realised that I lead a really charmed life.

Girl Power

Inspired by "Track and Field" day at school. Had to get to school before 7:30am to catch the action!

Today's Gratitude Item: My student-lead Science presentations are going well so far. Lets just say that grabbing a seat at the back of the room (where my "dodgy guys" sit) was a good move. Turns out that its hard to misbehave when your teacher is sitting right next to you!

Fine Balance

In dance (and art), its important to get the balance just right.

Today's Gratitude Item: A good day at the computer. Having almost an entire day to devote to my "work" has been wonderful. This is a rare occurrence in term time.

In the Hole

He's wondering where the ball went :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Hot chocolate, orange juice and a long chat with a friend from Wellington. Lets just say this evening was most pleasant.

Friday, June 12, 2009

Quote is from Quote of the Day. I'm hoping this will find a place on a really special person's desktop.

Today's Gratitude Item: That all my reports are complete and proofread. I also managed to finish proofing my colleague's reports so its all good :)

High Velocity

This one is going to be hit for six!

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to update some websites despite a "full on" (and extremely long) day at school.

Rugby Star

Another "Fractal Science Kit" experiment. Look closely, and you'll either see a series of blue cubes with white edges or a bunch of stars.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having 13 people come to dance class tonight. It was the first time I've lead such a large group and it worked really well. After being at half strength last week it was something of a relief to have so many dancers turn up. Needless to say a good time was had by all.

Look Around!

This one is the result of "playing" with Fractal Science Kit. Its a lovely little program and it was worth the $30.00 odd dollars I paid to register it.

Quote is from The Quotations Page.

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to make a dent my rather large "to do" list. Said dent is not nearly as large as I'd like it to be, but its a start. This GI is rather ironic given the quote in the image above, but there you have it.

Into the Sun

This guy could probably use a hat of some sort. And loads of sunscreen! Remember people, getting burned is just not cricket.

For those of Americans out there, the phrase "just not cricket" means something that is plain wrong.

Today's Gratitude Item: Hot tasty meat stew on a very cold day - and the fact that I did not have to cook said stew :)

Sunday, June 07, 2009

Batting Practice

Sometimes, too much practice can make one a little crazy. This could be one of those times - at least for this person.

Today's Gratitude Item: Not being exhausted! After an insanely late night last night I was forced to take an afternoon nap and am now feeling "on top of the world". Tonight I am going to bed at a reasonable hour. After all, that is what responsible adults are meant to do :)

Saturday, June 06, 2009

Ice Grid

This boy is locked away in his own little world - its probably a good thing.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a lovely pair of "polyprops" (ie: thermal leggings) at a great price.

Friday, June 05, 2009

Reading Mat

As in a place to read when all the chairs are taken! If the book is good enough, where one sits ceases to be of any great importance.

Today's Gratitude Item: That someone "out there" liked one of my images so much that they want to use it as CD cover art. The cool thing is that the large version is on flickr but they still took the time to check that it was OK to use the image. Its really great when people do "the right thing" and ask permission before using my work.

Thursday, June 04, 2009

Its hard to know exactly what happens when one is in that particular state.

Today's Gratitude Item: My first "six period" day all year! Sure it was extremely busy but in my world busy = $$ = great.

Pebble Plant

Perhaps she is reading up about this rather unusual plant.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding some quick and easy resources to use for teaching basic genetics. There is a lot out there but finding good stuff which is easy to access and fairly fool proof is always a great thing.

Tuesday, June 02, 2009

Dali's Rose

I think Dali would like this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to make the kosher kiwi directory for my community searchable! All I can say is that the support over at dabble is superb. Our site uses the free "Commons Plan" although after experiencing their service I'd have no problem recommending that clients who needed a web based database consider one of dabble's paid plans.

Sunset Graveyard

An experiment that went rather well. The title is a bit dodgy - but those rectangles reminded me of headstones.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being invited to the Johnny Clegg concert on short notice and being able to go. Said concert was amazing (picture over a thousand screaming South Africans sans rugby game and you've got a rough idea of what it was like). Joking aside, the music was wonderful and a good time was had by all. I'm not usually a concert person, in fact the last concert I went to was - you guessed it a Johnny Clegg concert back in 2005. Go figure :)
