Dawn Flower

The field scientist is making extensive notes on this newly discovered species.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my dad went back to work today. The recovery time for the kind of surgery he had is supposed to be between four and six weeks after getting home from hospital. He's gone back to work three weeks after his operation! Happily he is being sensible and he's doing "half days" for a bit rather than jumping in at the deep end.

This one reminded me of the intro to those old 007 movies - so of course I put in a guy with a starter gun. It seemed logical at the time.

Today's Gratitude Item: Fine breaks in the weather! Happily I did not get rained on today - which is no small miracle considering that for much of the time we were treated to lightning, thunder and lots of that wonderful wet stuff. Rain is only wonderful when one is safe indoors - that's my story and I'm sticking with it.

He looks like he is expecting someone (or something) to come flying past.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting to eat dinner :) After a day of no food, drink or computer its great to be *almost* back to normal.

Yom Kippur 5770

This one took a while to create. If you chose the path "To Life" and stuck to the posted speed limit, it would take 25 hours to get there. I wonder how many people would spot that rather subtle message. Of course the image conveniently ignores the fact that one is not meant to drive on Yom Kippur - that's a little thing called artistic license.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting most of the design for a new website done. It was a challenge at times but I'm pleased with how it turned out - hopefully my client will be too.

Dairy Dreaming

Once the cows have been milked, its important to keep that milk nice and cold - hence the fan.

Today's Gratitude Item: Summer is officially here! Daylight saving starts at 2:00am tomorrow morning and whilst we all lose an hour's sleep its totally worth it. Long afternoon walks are one of the best things about Kiwi summers.

I don't think this guy has a realistic chance of putting out that fire - but I could be wrong.

Today's Gratitude Item: My muse is still alive and well - sometimes I worry about getting the designers equivalent of "writer's block" - happily this has not happened yet.

Noodle Star

And this ladies and gentleman is why one should not try and create fractals when one is sick *! Ugh.

Its almost bad enough to deserve a set all of its own called "What was I thinking?"

*Image was created some time ago - I'm all better now :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a large, new bath towel! Sometimes it really is the small things that matter.

Driving Off

Into the sunset. Again (I think this title is recycled).

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally finishing my marking - after the first 30 or so practical write-ups, this task becomes rather tedious.

Snow Fall

The quote makes even more sense if you consider yesterday's image.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding out about Incendia which is an extremely promising 3D fractal generator.

Painted Fire

Work flow went like this: Make Fractal, find quote, name fractal. Hope this is not too hot to handle.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a large amount of marking done and realising that the majority of my students fared rather well in their recent assessment - one *large* pile down, two more to go!

Sunday, September 20, 2009

Sometimes fractals make my brain itch. Now is one of those times.

Today's Gratitude Item: That I work at a great school where resources are not an issue, parents are involved in their kid's education and IT is used extensively. My cousin (who is also a teacher) is not so lucky! Sometimes one does not know how lucky one is until notes are compared.

Shana Tova 5770

Shana Tova everyone! May the coming year be filled with peace, good health and happiness.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Making it to the end of term! I'm also grateful and amazed that my 7th grade students who needed extra time on an assessment for various reasons turned up at lunch time (without being reminded) to catch up. These kids are truly amazing - and I'm lucky to be their teacher.

Raw Chocolate

If cocoa plants were fractals, this is what they would like like. I found the quote on virtual chocolate.

Today's Gratitude Item: "Nailing it" by chance. The principal of our Middle School is retiring tomorrow after 16 years of service. This is an extremely "big deal" and I spent between 100 and 200 hour creating an image that summarised his years of service. I deeply admire the man and the graphic that I created was extremely detailed. One of the first things that went on the image was a silhouette of a helicopter as, when he turned 60, the school got him a ride on a chopper to celebrate and this was quite meaningful for him. I gave him a large copy of the graphic on a memory stick as a small leaving present with instructions not to look at it until after "his" assembly today. At the end of the assembly, he was surprised by another helicopter ride! Happily it was the same type of helicopter as the last time making the graphic that much more special.

Whoopsy Daisy

Usually cows are bigger than daisies - but not this time!

Today's Gratitude Item: A client liked the logo that I designed for his business :) Doing logos is something that is always challenging and it was a relief that this one was successful.

Blood Gold Rose

Those two should quite fighting each other and avoid that nasty looking shape that is coming towards them.

Today's Gratitude Item: My dad was allowed home from hospital today and is doing well. For the first time in weeks I was able to breathe easily and not worry - this was one of those situations where you hold your breath and don't realise it until you are able to let it go *if that makes any sense at all*.

River Log

I only noticed the hexagonal pattern after the image had rendered. Its a good thing said pattern is actually quite pretty.

Today's Gratitude Item: A week that is not going to be insanely busy - so far the schedule is looking doable! I may even get to bed at a reasonable hour tonight (yay)!

If it looks like its about to explode, running away fast is a good option.

Today's Gratitude Item: Chocolate cake and ice cream :) Its been a while since my mom baked but the wait was worth it. In heaven, mom's chocolate cake and ice cream won't have calories. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Turquoise Coin

Not only is this coin turquoise, its huge and shiny too.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my dad is much stronger after his surgery - they even let him eat ice cream this afternoon which, after more than a week on nothing / clear liquids is a definite sign of progress. Having a loved one in hospital is never fun and I'm really grateful for the outstanding care that dad has received.

Thursday, September 10, 2009

If I had a view like that, I'd be curious too.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding a "Millionaire" game that lets you make the questions - this is a fun way to help kids learn stuff and puts a nice spin on the rather boring "multi-choice" quiz.

Beaten Chocolate

This one reminded me of what happens if you beat egg whites in the process of making meringues. Done right, one gets a pattern formed by the beaters that does not look too different from the above (except for the colour). I would not actually add chocolate to egg whites as the fat in the chocolate tends to make the meringue collapse. Think of the colour in the images as a touch of artistic license.

Today's Gratitude Item: That so far, my dad is recovering well from the major surgery he had yesterday. Here's hoping and praying that all continues to go smoothly!

You are Here

This one may well end up as an entry in the Benoit Mandelbrot Fractal Art Contest. Just knowing that the contest is being run again and that entries are open until the 10th October was enough to send me running back to Apophysis.

Today's Gratitude Items: My dad made it through major surgery today. Its been a long day with a happy ending and I'm extremely grateful to the doctors, nurses and staff at the hospital who have been amazing. I'm also grateful to my colleagues at school who have been wonderful. Most of all I'm grateful for my mom who spent the entire day at the hospital praying for and then being with my dad.

Spin Spiral

Who knew that throwing a discus could be so pretty.

*Trademe is the New Zealand equivalent of ebay.

Emergent Roses

Perhaps they are running in an effort to win an ornate rose medal.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a good haircut for free. Technically said hair cut was not really free, it was the result of a "loyalty card" - the kind where you have 'x' number of haircuts and then the last one on the card is "free". The stylist in question did a great job and I did not need to wait to be seen :)

Fear Fall

Its not the falling that bothers me, its the thought of hitting the ground!

Today's Gratitude Item: Being featured on The Phil Factor. I've been reading "The Phil Factor" almost since I started blogging and it is the funniest blog that I follow. Its hard to describe why - just pay Phil a visit and see for yourself.

Go, Go, Go!

Inspired by White Rosebud which was spotted over at HocusFocusClick's Photostream.

Today's Gratitude Item: After an extremely long period of time, I finally got another Enhanced License sale over at Shutterstock. Compare the "usual" rate of 36c* with the "Enhanced" rate of $28.00 and its no surprise that I'm very happy :)

*Actually getting from the initial 25c per photos to the 36c per photo is a whole other story.

Surface of the Moon

The surface of the moon does not look exactly like this, but its close.

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to procure a hand held electronic game machine which will be a present for my dad for father's day. I'm hoping he enjoys it :)

Wednesday, September 02, 2009

This one is the result of an experiment that worked out well. Dedicated to one of my colleagues who coaches basketball :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Not having to write a list of dances for next week's class - its not that I mind coming up with "the list" but not having to do it gives me a bit of a break which is really good. *I need a break*

Eccentric Flow

The thing with snow is that in most cases, "its nice from far, but far from nice". Here in Auckland it never snows. Back in Johannesburg (SA), I remember having snow once when I was about 4 years old - its one of my earliest memories, probably because it was so unusual.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my private student does not need a session next week. I could not make it and was worried that she would need the help. Happily her exam is before then so having a session next week does not make sense.
