Life Sentence

This photo is of one of the "party chimps" at Auckland zoo. Said chimp is very old and despite the photo, he seems reasonably happy. The chimp was surrounded by adoring children and appeared to be enjoying the attention. Happily, he is the last of a generation and the "new" chimps are much more "wild".

Today's Gratitude Item: My massive pile of filing only took about 20 minutes to "disappear". Embarrassingly there was about six months worth of "stuff" waiting to be filed. I'm usually more organised than this. Thing is, small bits of personal filing take almost as long as larger bits - that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Tangled Chain

The "chain" design in the background worked out well :)

Tangled Chain

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a loan computer at school. I've been without a laptop all week and its been pretty horrible (its hard to prepare electronic resources when denied the 'electronics' to do so). Was finally able to use a loan machine today - the snafu was not the fault of our IT guys. It was not my fault either. "Middle Men" can be rather inconvenient - especially when they are not efficient.

Coloured Zebra

Every so often a design appears which does not need clipart. This was one of those times. The pattern reminds me of Zebra skin which has been coloured.

Coloured Zebra

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: More unexpected design work. Posters this time from a different client. For someone who designs as a hobby, this is pretty exciting. I think I'm too cheap because when I quoted a price, the client immediately said "yes" - didn't even take a second to think about it.

Homespun Gold

Pattern reminds me of crude fabric, perhaps something that one could use to make a bag / sack.

Homespun Gold

The wallpaper version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Not having to get up at an insane hour tomorrow for an early morning meeting at school tomorrow. A slight "sleep in" is better than no sleep in at all.

Two Monkeys

With a flaming flower background.

Two Monkeys

The wallpaper version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: The israelidances.com. This great website / database allowed me to find the lyrics and other information about most of the dances in our repertoire. Said lyrics have now been put onto the ipod. Knowing the meaning of the songs we are dancing to does add depth to the session. It makes it easier to remember song names as well.

Lizard's Lair

This critter is actually a tuatara. Whilst these NZ natives are very rare, they do live a long time. One recently featured in the news (must be a slow news cycle).

Lizard's Lair

The wallpaper version can be downloaded at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: I got the last 320 gig hard drive that the store had - on special. Price was NZ$149.00 rather than NZ$249. Thus my vital files have now been backed up and I'm very happy.

Watchers

These two are enjoying my spectacular fractal display :)

Watchers

The wallpaper version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Figuring out how to back up files onto a DVD. This means being able to store several gigs worth on one "CD", rather than 700 MB's (which just does not cut it when one has a large number of image files to back up). Also seeing an external hard drive at a really great price.

Golden Emu

The fractal is not quite egg shaped, but its close enough.

Golden Emu

The wallpaper version can be downloaded at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: A pain-free WOF (its a car thing). It was very quick and there were no problems with my lovely little car. So its all good.

Paradise Pod

Emu's aren't exactly birds of paradise, but in my world even the ordinary can become exotic.

Paradise Pod

The wallpaper version can be seen at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: My dad took some brilliant reference photos of Rangitoto for me. I needed them to make a graphic for a client's webpage and he was in the area.

Shell in Sand

Made from scratch. The softness of the image combined with the reasonably strong colours "works".

Shell In Sand

The wallpaper version can be downloaded at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: The banner I designed for a client was OK'd by the printer, which means that I get paid for it - this is extremely exciting as its my first ever commercial "graphic design" job. I'm hoping more of that kind of work comes my way.

Supersonic

Breaking the sound barrier does not actually look like this, but its reasonably close. Dedicated to my colleagues who teach Physics.

Supersonic

The wallpaper version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: My local library waiving the usual $1.00 reserve fee on a book that I ordered. They have this promotion where you can order / reserve books for free as long as they are picked up before the 1st of March. To top it off, the book that I got, "Wow!" (Adobe Illustrator CS2) is extremely good. I'm learning a lot from it. There's a version of book out for later versions of Illustrator, but this is the one the library had.

Heart Sea Spiral

Hope you "dig" this image :)

Heart Sea Spiral

The wallpaper version can be downloaded at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: A great scrabble word! Said word got me 164 points in one go. Managed to place the word so that it intersected with another word on a triple word score, with the 'Q' on a double letter score. The word "mazedly" became "amazedly" and the word I made was "quota" with the "a" of quota falling on that magical triple word score. This is probably a record for me.

Eating Emu

As in the Emu is eating something, rather than being eaten!

Eating Emu

The wallpaper version can be downloaded at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having a bit more time before school goes back. Why is it that holidays are always too short?

Stork at Sunrise

Its amazing what a bit of imagination and a visit to the zoo can do.

Stork at Sunrise

The wallpaper version can be downloaded at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Lets just say yesterday it was $1.00, today it was $2.00 - this is the reason enjoy walking outside so much! Only downside was that towards the end of my walk it started to rain (it was surprisingly cold rain for summer).

Deep Blue Peacock

This is an Apo spiral that came out quite well. The intense blue is a result of quite a bit of "playing" in Paint Shop Pro.

Deep Blue Peacock

The wallpaper version can be downloaded at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding $1.00 on our morning walk. Its been too long since we have found a decent amount of "small" change.

Friday, January 16, 2009

Gold Peace

This one reminds me of the veins of a gold / brown leaf. Took a while to make "from scratch".

Gold Peace

The wallpaper version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: I designed an advertising banner for a client and they like it - enough that they have asked if I'd be interested in designing more banners for them in the future. This is very exciting for me.

Fall Chores

Raking up leaves is my least favourite chore. Probably because its so futile. No sooner has one "raked" than more leaves fall and the mess is as bad as it was before.

Fall Chores

The wallpaper version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being left alone to do "my thing". Company is good, but being left alone when one has stuff to do is wonderful.

Rings of Fire - Flower Edition

Its amazing what a rake and a touch of determination can achieve.

Rings of Fire - Flower Edition

The wallpaper version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting started on a project that has been haunting me since the start of the vacation. I've needed to create this image but its one of those "intensive" jobs that is quite daunting. Finally have the basic design created so whilst it will take time, the rest of the process is rather straight forward.

Hair Cascade

It looks like this hair cut is taking place in a cave somewhere - is it must me or is that plain weird?

Hair Cascade

The wallpaper version is a the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Seeing my dad really happy today. The reason was quite small, the smile on his face was not. I have not seen my dad so happy for too long - I think he's taking the current financial crisis personally.

Still Mowing

This one reminds me of a saying I read somewhere: We pray for rain to make grass grow and then alas we have to mow!

Still Mowing

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to read / understand the graffiti in the image below (spotted over at Zeev's Photostream).

Sizzling Summer

Dedicated to all those BBQ lover out there. Especially if you usually call a BBQ a "braai".

Sizzling Summer

The wallpaper version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: The Christmas decorations have been taken down in my local shopping center. The center looks a lot cleaner and less cluttered and this is a sure sign that things will get back to normal soon.

Mowing the Lawn

Throw in a cool fractal and even the most tedious of chores becomes a joy.

Mowing the Lawn

The wallpaper version can be downloaded at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Four out of the ten texture photos I submitted were accepted on Shutterstock. My acceptance rate for fractals / illustrations is *much* higher (rejections for those are rare) but my photos are invariably rejected for various reasons, so actually getting something "through" is quite exciting. Lets hope they sell.

Floral Rhino

Rhino is the result of a recent trip to the zoo. He turned out well.

Floral Rhino

The wallpaper version can be downloaded at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: A keywording service that I discovered over in the Shutterstock Forums. This nifty little page is rather helpful when trying to keyword images - even if it occasionally "chokes".

Glass Forest

Is it just me or does this forest look like its made from green glass?

Glass Forest

The wallpaper version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my dad is happy with the calendar that I created for him. This was the second attempt and unlike the first attempt, the background was not too dark. The calendar in question can be downloaded at the preceding link. Its great for New Zealanders as it shows the school terms, our public holidays and the major Jewish festivals too. It can be printed out as A4 or A3. The ironic clipart was not lost on him (he's put it on his wall at work).

Waiting

Even though he is forced to wait, this passenger does not mind too much because he likes the fractal background :)

Waiting

Bonus Question: How do we know this person is waiting to catch a plane?

The wallpaper version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting positive feedback about a website that I designed and maintain. So often in life, its the little things that can make a day go from "OK" to "great". When the "office lady" takes the time to pass on positive feedback it is always appreciated.

Imprisoned Flamingo

Inspired by a trip to the zoo. The animals are not kept behind actual bars anymore - which is a good thing.

Imprisoned Flamingo

The wallpaper version can be downloaded at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my local CAB still had some of the "postcards" that I designed for them a while back. Grabbed two for the portfolio that I'm building to showcase my published work. So far the file is rather thin, but we all have to start somewhere.

Monday, January 05, 2009

Globe Flamingo

This bird is getting ready to fly off into the sunset.

Globe Flamingo

The wallpaper version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having more than enough white wool to finish "Project Blanket". It looked a bit dicey for a bit, then mom's hidden stash of wool was uncovered. And you all thought my life was boring!

Sunday, January 04, 2009

Fuzzy Stars

If you star at this one long enough, it seems almost three dimensional.

Fuzzy Stars

The wallpaper version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: A friend offered to share some of his Apo secrets! Friends like that are hard to find.

Saturday, January 03, 2009

Lively Lemur

Dedicated to all those "Madagascar" fans out there. I thought the original movie was kind of cheesy, but kids seem to like it.

Lively Lemur

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: A "grate" shopping experience. Literally. Found a special grater for nuts, chocolate and cheese shredding that was on sale at half price. This will save me from risking my fingers when grating nuts (long story). Needless to say, this kitchen gadget is already being used and enjoyed.

Modern Star of David

I was trying to recreate a triquetra but it did not work out that way. Never mind.

Modern Star of David

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Safety pins! Sometimes small things can be extremely useful.

Cock Spiral

This spiral looks like it is made out of feathers! That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Cock Spiral

The wallpaper version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Seeing an Illustrators book being recommended on a forum and then being able to locate the book at my local library. Cost? $1.00 to order said book and a bit of patience to wait for it to be returned by the person currently borrowing it. This is the ultimate of "try before you buy".
