Give and Take

The existence of this one is a minor miracle.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my last period class went well. Lets just say that sharing the computer lab with another group who were doing a formal assessment was a surreal experience. Everyone in my group "stepped up" as in there was absolute silence for the entire period and everyone was on task. Kids simply emailed me their questions and I used the LAN school software to keep an eye on what they were all doing and message them when needed. It was brilliant.

Spiral Blossom

Another in the "was not expecting this" category.

Today's Gratitude Item: That even though I made a massive mistake with an assessment we were running, things turned out all right in the end and my boss was really great about the whole thing. I'm sure that teasing will follow in due course but this seems to be one of those times when the phrase "no harm, no foul" comes into play.

Easy Promise

Took forever to find colours that "worked" with this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my car started without any dramas this morning. Yesterday it was too cold and there was some rather worrying coughing and spluttering. Today it was much better behaved. Will probably get the battery replaced in the near future - just in case.

Disc Money

Those circular bits are alien money. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Today's Gratitude Item: My morning tea duty was "covered" by someone else and I did not have to go to tutor time meaning I got an unexpected long break today which was a great start to the week.

Got Nerve?

If you do, this might be the wallpaper for you :) To be fair "Chutzpah" involves a lot more than just nerve - its one of those words that is impossible to accurately translate.

Today's Gratitude Item: It finally snowed on the mountains! Whilst I have absolutely no desire to ski, it turns out that a lot of people enjoy the sport and without the snow, the ski season can't start which is bad for the economy and really bad for those who rely on all those skiers for much of their income. So whilst it is freezing over here in Auckland, its all for a good cause. Here's hoping the season lasts a good long while :)

Poor Wisdom

I'm not sure that I agree with the quotation. Whilst it is possible to be poor and wise, it is also possible to be wealthy and wise. I'd prefer to be the latter!

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting some "alone" time :) Its nice to be left to one's own devices every so often.

All Alike

The detail on the spheres in this one was appealing. Its a pity that I could not get more spheres and less "other stuff".

Today's Gratitude Item: Being told that I'm doing a good job by some of my students. Funny how the ones who try hard and are determined to succeed appreciate my efforts :) Getting that sort of encouragement from students is rare but deeply appreciated.

Big Embrace

This one contains not one world, but many!

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting all my junior reports done and the fact that my head of learning said they were "excellent". This was a relief as its the my first time doing reports at my new school. Writing the reports was relatively easy as all we do is simply state what our students can do and what they need to do to improve their performance.

Rich Ribbons

I wonder how much these ribbons would fetch if sold on the open market...

Today's Gratitude Item: An unexpected "free" - I was supposed to see my challenging 8th grade class today but they had a field trip to the observatory that I did not know about. Having some extra time to tackle my "work mountain" was really useful. If only the mountain would shrink, things would be even better.

Old Friend

Got very lucky with this one. This type of fractal is something of an "old friend" making the quotation somewhat relevant.

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to mark my 10th graders' statistics practice. They emailed me their efforts and it took a while to work through it all and reclaim my in-box.

Can Wish

Again, the quotation struck a chord. It is as relevant to creating fractals as to everyday life.

Today's Gratitude Item: Our community finally has a new Rabbi. We have been waiting a very long time so getting the news that we have "someone" is very exciting. All that still needs to happen is for final details to be ironed out and said Rabbi to move over here from Aussie.

Ordinary Rose

Roses are really rather extraordinary in their beauty - thus the title of this one is something of a contradiction.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting my 8th graders' reports completed and finding a really great site for Easy to Use Datasets. Some of the data available is really interesting and I'll be using it when teaching statistics to my 10th grade classes.

Strings Attached

This one took a fair bit of post-processing but it was worth it. Its more "modern" than much of my recent work.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to help a friend with some Mathematics problems he was having. He needed to revisit some "basic" (as in easy when you know how) material for a course he is doing. Its always nice working with people who are motivated and learn quickly.

Hole Thing

Apophysis keeps throwing up images like this one - and I'm not sure that this is a good thing.

Today's Gratitude Item: That I had an alternate plan for my 8th grade math group. They were meant to do a test but that was not possible due to being interupted by sports photos. Happily, they were busy for most of the time and they will end up doing the test on Monday.

Metallic Magic

This is the first flame rendered several months ago using my "new" computer (the old one "died" when graphics card got burned out).

After several days of not being able to produce anything due to computer issues, it was great to finally produce something new.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the doorpost in my classroom is finally graffiti free! Several of my not so lovely students "decorated" it with some rather offensive material. Their efforts were photographed before being removed so there is a chance that the culprits will be found and appropriate consequences will follow.

Metro Tile

The connections between different parts of the image reminded me of a city, hence the "Metro" part of the title.

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to teach Bakapayim to my dance group. I learned the dance from the video at the preceding link. "Getting" this particular routine was a challenge as the dance has at least five distinct parts and I must have watched the video at least 30 times to get everything "straight". Happily, the group enjoyed the dance and they managed to master the various parts with ease.

Intricate Connections

It took forever to get this one looking "just right". I'm really pleased with the results.

Today's Gratitude Item: A poster that I was working on for a client "came together" really well. I needed an image of a soft drink can for this particular project and found a public domain vector image which was perfect for my needs. One of the slightly sad things is that I got more satisfaction out of creating this particular image than out of teaching my various classes today. Sometimes it feels as if I should be spending more time on design and a lot less time trying to impart the principles of algebra to students who would rather be doing something else.

Blue Moon Travels

As in it looked a bit like a blue moon which is going places

Today's Gratitude Item: One of the more "challenging" students that I teach has decided to transfer to another school. Not having to worry about said student for much longer makes me very happy :)

Sunday, June 12, 2011

Co Disc

As in a disc paired with other elements. Not be confused with the '80's disco phenomenon.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a new "follower" on my blog. Its always nice that another person liked what they saw enough to want more of the same.

Symbolic Ripples

These ripples make a number of interesting symbols. They are a bit rigid but I suspect this design will "grow" on me.

Today's Gratitude Item: Skipping the queue at the hair dresser. There was supposed to be a 40 minute wait but those "waiting" had gone to get lunch so I got served straight away.

Friday, June 10, 2011

Chocolate Runner

If you look at this one just right, you can see the head and arms of a chocolate guy running a race. Unless you are hungry - then all you'll see is the chocolate :)

Today's Gratitude Item: House Meetings! Mostly because it meant that I did not need to do anything at tutor time :)

Thursday, June 09, 2011

Agno Curve

As in its a curve which I'm not sure about (agno from the "agnostic" / unknowable).

Today's Gratitude Item: All of my classes have entered their data into the Census at School Database. This process did not take as long as feared and most students seemed to enjoy it.

String Hexagram

This one is a bit intricate for my liking. I suspect that there are some "out there" who will like it.

Today's Gratitude Item: All the textbooks that mysteriously went missing from my class during exam week have re-appeared. They were texts used by my junior classes and someone "borrowed" them, took them to a completely different area of the school due to a room change and did not return them. Happily one of my colleagues found out where they ended up and they are now back where they belong.

Shavuot Sameach

This one was inspired by one of our local pizza companies which has a very slick advertising campaign. Needless to say, the advertising from that company routinely offends a large number of people and has sparked numerous complaints to the advertising standards authority.

The pizza image is courtesy of Wikimedia Commons (photographer: Jon Sullivan).

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Not having to write comments for my twelfth grade reports. All we need to do is indicate whether students are performing at expectation or not. We can also tag the student if we need to see their parents on interview night next week. The last school I was at, we would have to write full mid-year reports which was quite a mission. Its nice not to have to do that this time around.

Heart Chambers

This one is the result of experimenting with the "Glynnia" variation which I discovered recently.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having enough nuts to make my cinnamon nut buns. Suffice it to say, running out of a crucial ingredient is something best avoided.

Disc Oh!

This is more than a simple disc!

Today's Gratitude Item: Long weekends! For some reason the "novelty" of having an extra day to relax never wears off. Long live the Queen!

Heart of Gold

I love Apophysis and here is the fractal to prove it.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting my 10th graders' mid-year exams marked. It was a time consuming process and I'm really glad it is done.

Green Disturbance

Had a lot of fun getting this particular ripple effect.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting up on time. We had a brief power failure at around 5:50am meaning that my alarm died at that point. Happily, something "bleeped" when the power went out and that "bleep" was enough to wake me. I then used my cell phone to check the time as it was too dark to see my wrist watch and chilled out for 20 minutes before getting up (and dressed) in the dark. Happily the power came back on at around 6:20am and things went back to normal.

Weird Wind

Another "Glynnia" experiment that went rather well.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to create fractals as an escape from what has been a difficult, frustrating day. Lets just say that our students are not the only ones feeling "exam pressure".

Wednesday, June 01, 2011

Lidless Ball

It looks like the lid has been removed from this sphere.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to book the computer labs at school so my classes can participate in Census at School. I was worried that I'd left things a little late as the deadline for entering the data is on the 10th June. The measuring the kids need to do will be useful as well and it should keep them busy.
