Almost Yellow Flowers

Dedicated to one of my Biologist colleagues. She mentioned that she really liked bright yellow flowers - hopefully this comes close.

Almost Yellow Flowers

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting hold of the original file that I needed to make changes to a client's brochure. Its amazing how easy it is to modify stuff when you have the right files / software.

See the Light

Dedicated to one of my favourite people. I am forever grateful for the times she has "popped in" to my class and helped out with equipment and explanations.

See the Light

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: This Game. Its a tiny bit addictive and a great time waster - just what was needed on the second to last day of my vacation.

Love Science

Dedicated to one of the busiest people at school. This person is pretty close to magical and the way that gear appears when it is needed an disappears when experiments are done is something that I have never taken for granted. Thanks for making life so much easier!

Love Science

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: A good old fashioned hard copy puzzle book which has a mix of puzzles - crosswords, word finds (boring), soduku and some that I have not tried before. Its fun to play with new toys.

Path to Wisdom

Dedicated to one of the nicest human beings on the planet. This is for my ex-Head of Faculty who always seems to know exactly what to say or do in any given situation. Its been an honour working with her and she has influenced me more than she could ever know.

Path to Wisdom

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a reasonably priced stationery tray. Its actually a white cutlery tray but it will be used at school to keep my various bits of stationery organised. You'd think that finding a cutlery tray would be a simple matter but most are far more expensive than they should be - after all, its just a piece of moulded plastic.

When

Dedicated to one of our long suffering lab technicians who is practical, efficient and down to earth. She has a a great sense of humour - The quotation was her idea :)

When?

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Taking a complete break from creating fractals for today. Its been an intense vacation from school and after weeks of "working", I'd had enough. Am hoping that my fractal muse is not silent for too long.

Phoenix Rising

Dedicated to another of my colleagues who has been a real inspiration. Despite what life has thrown at her, she has incredible strength and the ability to go on when others would long ago have given up. Did I mention that she's an awesome Statistics teacher?

Phoenix Rising

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having a play with bloggers layout features for my Calendar blog which will hopefully be used by my students and their parents. The main aim was to change the background and get the side bar / links to co-operate. I'm debating putting ads on there as it is likely the site will see a fair bit of use.

Coffee Mate

Dedicated to a colleague of mine (at my previous school) who unfailing offered to get everyone their morning fix. Whilst I do not indulge, I love that he enthusiastically ensured that no one in the office had to suffer from caffeine withdrawal.

Coffee Mate

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Figuring out how to use a combination of google docs and blogger to publish Summary Sheets for my classes for this year. It makes sharing the documents very easy which is kind of the point of the exercise.

Must / Can

Heavily post processed in PSP - the effort was worth it.

Must / Can

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: The weather finally cleared up. After two days of grey skies and stormy wind / rain was finally able to walk outside this afternoon. Finding $1.10 (two coins, two different places) during said walk was an added bonus.

Little Charm

The question is, does this one have enough charm to make it more than "ordinary"?

Little Charm

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Simple pleasures like reading good Science fiction on a very rainy day. There's something about indulging in a book that is deeply satisfying.

Together Apart

Was particularly pleased with this one. Lets just say that it came as something of a surprise.

Together / apart

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Its raining. Part of me hopes that it continues tomorrow so that I can sleep in without having to go for a walk. Someone is feeling lazy!

Fish Hook

If Maori jade carvings were fractals, this is what they might look like. Its surprisingly close to the real thing. As is so often the case, I was not trying to create this particular shape - it just happened.

Fish Hook

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Rosemary bread rolls. They are "new" on the menu at home and they are fabulous.

Creative Salvation

This one turned out better than expected. Its good when that happens.

Creative Salvation

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: UBit Menu. This neat little add-on allowed me to get back the old (ie: familiar) menus from Word / Excel. I recently upgraded to Office 2010 and the entire interface changed which was annoying. The add on fixed the problem beautifully.

Ribbon Road

Its either a ribbon or a road. Either way, the spiral obsession strikes again.

Ribbon Road

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting my tablet to cooperate. I thought it was all sorted yesterday but turned on my machine today and the thing was dead. After grovelling to make it work, I checked my email and there was a message there from a Rabbi who follows my blog suggesting that if yesterday's fix didn't take, I check my power settings. That was a brilliant suggestion as it worked. All I had to do was disable power saving on my USB ports - and I'd never have guessed the secret if it was not for that fortuitous email. Thanks Rabbi :)

Tu B'Shvat 5771

Tu B'Shvat is the New Year for trees, so here is my take on it. Basically when I hear "new year", I think small gifts and this present comes with care instructions. I got the acorn image over at wikimedia which saved a lot of time.

Tu B'Shvat 5771

The huge version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: My Wacom Graphire4 is finally behaving. Previously it would not turn on when I turned on my computer and the only way to get it to work was to take it out of the USB and then put it back in (ie: grovel on floor at back of computer). I installed new drivers yesterday and last night changed the USB port that it was plugged in to - magically that appears to have done the trick. Lets hope the "fix" sticks.

Arched Hotspots

Not my best work. For some reason I thought it would be OK when rendered but its nothing special. Some days go like that.

Arched Hotspots

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: My new computer! Everything is a bit of an adventure but there are some really cool features which I did not have access to before. My favourite trick is invoking programs by clicking the Windows key and then typing in the first few letters of the required software. That usually brings up the program and is quicker than finding it and clicking on it with the mouse.

Kiwi Plate

This one reminded me of bright green, orange and terracotta plates (sort of).

Kiwi Plate

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding out how to get Firefox to check my spelling on the new computer. It was as easy as installing the British English dictionary add on. The added bonus is that my browser now accepts that "colour" is spelled with a "u" in some parts of the world.

Internal Creativity

Was playing with a new type of fractal. Am not sure all the effort to get to this point was worth it.

Internal Creativity

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Am loving the new computer. It seems to be running smoothly and everything is just that much faster than it was on the old machine. Whilst Windows 7 is a bit different to XP, the differences are not to extreme.

Ephermeral Impact

The quotation on this one seemed particularly apt.

Ephermeral Impact

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: My new computer is officially up and running! It has pretty much all of the software re-installed and my files have been retrieved from my "old" computer. Dad has now inherited the old computer and I took most of my stuff off it and put his stuff on it. This took most of the day and its a relief that its done. Since the "Disaster" I have not been able to do any real work. Here's hoping that after Shabbat, that will change.

Sumer Burning

This one looks like a flame if you squint and use your imagination.

Summer Burning

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a great deal on my new computer! Also that my brother was prepared to come over and help me transfer files. Even though things did not quite work out as planned, its the thought that counts and everything is slowly coming together.

Ugly Patch

So, is this one an ugly patch, a beautiful hole or somewhere in between? I suspect the original saying had to do with fabric of some sort rather than fractals. This is my attempt to drag Yiddish kicking and screaming into the 21st century. My bobba would be proud.

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my "old" computer was not as dead as first feared. It turns out that the problem was due to the graphics card being fried and it is easily fixed. In fact, the computer works fine without the graphics card and thankfully the hard drive is still OK. I'll still be getting a new machine but now its a joy as I know my data can be backed up and hopefully I won't have lost anything. Both "new" and "old" computers should be in my possession at some point tomorrow. It will take a while to get things set up but its I'm feeling a lot better now compared with 24 hours ago. Did I mention that the guys over at PB Technology are brilliant! The service was excellent and I'm looking forward to visiting them tomorrow.

Disaster!

My computer died! This is being posted from my dad's machine which is better than nothing. The only problem is that said machine is so old, that the browser does not fully support flickr which means I can't access the location of the images / grab the code to show you today's fractal.

Right now I'm hoping that the content of my computer's hard drive can be resurrected. I have not backed up most of the data and I know that was an incredibly stupid thing to do (or not do) as the case may be. There was a massive amount of precious "stuff" on there and I should have been making regular back ups. No lectures people - please!

If this blog goes quiet for a bit, at least you all know why. It will be interesting to see how long it takes to get up and running again.

Today's Gratitude Item: I'm getting a new computer! Sooner rather than later I hope. The only type of shopping that I really enjoy is shopping for techie toys so this massive cloud does have a small silver lining. Added to that is the fact that my computer died in the middle of my school holidays so I have the time to shop around for a new one without having to fit it in around work.

Hope Star

Presenting the first in my "Yiddish Sayings" series. I found a great little book filled with Yiddish proverbs and got inspired. The best thing about the book is that its bilingual - which is useful as often the nuance behind the words gets lost in translation.

Hope Star

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting hold of the music for a "new" dance that I will teach my group when sessions resume. It should be fun.

Is it Real?

Fractals often flirt with reality. They can, on a good day, resemble things that we *almost* recognise. If this one was green, it could be mistaken for a close up of some kind of large leaf.

Is it Real?

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Mild weather. It was nice to go for a walk this morning and not be completely drenched by the end of it.

Time Compass

Even with a compass, it would be impossible to find time which has been lost.

Time Compass

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Fan email :) Its always nice when people who like my work take the time to let me know. Its even nicer when they want to use it (and are prepared to pay for the privilege).

Beautiful Math

Mathematics is beautiful. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Beautiful Math

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Pretty much a perfect day. Had great fun creating my Purim image for later in the year. Am feeling relatively up to date and very happy :)

Simple Love

Everything (and nothing) about love is simple. Perhaps one would be wise to distrust it.

Simple Love

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: A delightful "do nothing" day in which a surprising amount got done!

Lucky Bloom

If you squint a bit, this one looks like a four leaf clover.

Lucky Bloom

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: A ready made, public domain, Acorn Image which saved me a large amount of time when created my Tu B'Shvat graphic. Said graphic will appear on this blog in about two weeks time.

Butterfly Heart

As in a butterfly made of interwoven hearts.

Butterfly Heart

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Retail Therapy :) I don't usually like shopping but on this outing managed to find clothes that normal people would consider wearing.

Amber Vortex

Lets just say that the spiral addiction cannot be overcome.

Amber Vortex

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: That things "out there" are slowly getting back to normal after the New Year break. This means that with any luck, my Shutterstock sales should start to pick up (its been very quiet over there and not in a good way).

Sunday, January 02, 2011

Moving Action

I'm not too sure about this one. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

Moving Action

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Half priced shoes! My current pair of walking shoes are wearing a bit thin so new shoes are called for. Here's hoping that said shoes are as comfortable as the "old" pair.

Double Opportunity

Used the "foci" variant for the final transform and it turned out like this.

Double Opportunity

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: That some photos my dad was after were on my hard drive. He took them some time ago and could not remember where he put them. He had to wait until after Shabbat for me to look on my system and locate them for him. If I had not found them, he would still be making me crazy!
