New Day

An interesting result from a newish (but rather limited) variant.

New Day

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Knowing when to stop! I showed some colleagues how to upload resources so that their students could access them but stopped half way through the process. This may sound odd but they know enough to get the upload the resources and show students how to get them - they now need to learn how to make it a bit more user-friendly. The feedback so far has been good and we have another session scheduled for the near future to finish the job.

Heart Joining

Look closely and you might be able to spot two hearts in this one. Can't see them? Try tilting your head.

Heart Joining

Today's Gratitude Item: A lovely stress free day. Having a good book to read and rainy weather made it great.

Stunning Stocking

This one reminded me of the fabric that is used to make stockings, hence the name.

Stunning Stocking

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Figuring out how to recycle 'old' rewritable DVD's / CD's. Windows kept throwing up an error - eventually used image burn with great success.

Star Wedge

This star is rather chunky. I think I like it. It goes with the "bollywood" moves of the dancer.

Star Wedge

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a 30c off a litre petrol voucher from a colleague. Said colleague knows how far I travel to and from work each day and the voucher will save me around $12.00 the next time I fill up - which is great.

Ferb Turbine

If you take a fern, dye it purple and spin it around, this is what you get.

Fern Turbine

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting my stitches out! I had a "thing" (completely benign) from my neck removed last week and the stitches came out today so things are pretty much back to normal which is great.

5772 Yom Ha'atzmaut

Way back when I first starting making this sort of image, I created one that featured Israeli Ground Coffee. It seemed like a good idea to revisit the theme but feature tea instead. This one shamelessly recycles the cups and basic idea from Decision 2011. You might think that would make the process of creating this image faster - sadly, this was not the case.

5772 Yom Ha'atzmaut

Today's Gratitude Item: Beautiful weather on a beautiful day. Today was a big gift and not having to go in to work was really wonderful. Even better is the fact that it is two short days to the weekend. Whilst I do enjoy my job, it's really nice to have time off.

Yom Hazikaron 5772

This one focusses on the Seven Major Israeli Wars (according to Wikipedia). The poem is from the Zion Israel website. The original Hebrew is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting moderation done with a colleague last period today. Not only was the meeting extremely useful / positive, but it meant being able to get home in time to walk outside before nightfall.

ANZAC Day - Early Post!

This one was made especially for ANZAC day. It was inspired by a photo (seen on flickr) of the Israeli flag flying somewhere but everything in the photo was grayscale except the flag. It looked really effective and I thought the same idea would work well in this case. I've had to post it several days early as Yom Hazikaron / Yom Ha'atzmaut coincide with ANZAC day this year. The actual date for ANZAC day is the 25th April and I am looking forward to not having to go in to school :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Realising that wearing a scarf can be helpful in preventing a sore neck (the inevitable result of sitting for too long in the cold without moving enough)

String Circles

Took a fair bit of playing to get this one, but the time spent was worth it.

String Circles

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being ready to go back to school. Despite holidays always being "too short", it will be good to get back to work, especially as next week we get Wednesday off (it's a public holiday).

In the Loop

Its amazing what you can do with a *lot* of virtual string.

In the Loop

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Clean hair! I had a small growth removed from my neck last Thursday (it did not hurt) and that meant having to keep the area / dressing dry so washing my hair was impossible. Finally managed to get my hair clean today and it was bliss. It's funny how such little things can change one's whole outlook. The stitches come out on Thursday and I can't wait until things are back to normal.

Aotearoa Sunrise

Got really lucky with this one :)

Aotearoa Sunrise

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the new blogger interface is actually quite good. I was afraid it would be horrible / buggy but so far I'm really liking it - especially the 'stats' area which means that I can now watch "you" watch me (but not in a creepy way). It's a pity that the 'labels' for posts are in such a weird place.

Shattered (Yom HaShoa 5772)

This micrograph commemorates Kristallnacht. This event is viewed by many as the start of the Shoah. The names in the image have been taken from the The Central Database of Shoah Victims' Names.

Shattered

The huge version (names clearly readable) is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Remembering that this needed to be posted. It should have appeared last night but it's not too late! With the time difference in New Zealand, it will actually work out for the better. That's my story and, as usual, I'm sticking with it.

Interesting Arches

An experiment that *sort of* worked.

Interesting Arches

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being almost ready to return to school next week. My marking is finally done and I can enjoy the next four days without needing to worry about work. Life is good :)

Strange Pearl

This one is so big, that there is not a large enough rug to sweep it under.

Strange Pearl

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to make a significant dent in my marking. It's nice that so many of the kids have produced high quality work. Even better is the fact that marking the websites they produced is much quicker than anticipated.

Soft Dancing

This one is "interesting" which means I'm not sure whether I like it all that much.

Soft Dancing

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: An empty in-box. It's not that I don't like email, it's just nice to have done everything that needs doing - at least for now.

Pearl Fan

If electric fans were fractals, perhaps they would look a bit like this.

Pearl Fan

Today's Gratitude Item: That I still have another week of holidays :) The time "off" is passing all too quickly but am enjoying it while I can.

Ripple Mask

If you squint and use your imagination, the background looks like a mask.

Ripple Mask

Today's Gratitude Item: That Pesach is over for another year and whilst the matzos has been fun, it will be great to be able to enjoy bread again!

Tunnel to a Strange Place

Fractals can be strange places. I wonder where the tunnel leads...

Tunnel to a Strange Place

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: That in most cases snail mail is obsolete. Being able to file "paperwork" electronically is great as it's much quicker (and cheaper) than doing it the old fashioned way.

Dance Shadow

It took forever to select a fitting silhouette for this one. It turned out well in the end though so its all good.

Dance Shadow

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting images for Shavuot, Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha'atzmaut done. These will feature on this blog in due course.

Digital Cobwebs

Complete with a digital sweeper.

Digital Cobwebs

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finished my planning and it did not take quite as long as feared. I know I've blogged about planning twice in as many days but it's a pretty big deal and getting it "out of the way" is a massive relief.

Soft Star

This one reminds me of a nice warm blanket. Its the fractal equivalent of "warm fuzzies".

Soft Star

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Planning progress. As in three term (unit) plans down, one more to go. Once that's done - I'll tackle my marking mountain. Anyone who is under the impression that teachers don't work during the holidays is sorely mistaken. "Holidays" is really short for "a brief hiatus when you can catch up on all the stuff you did not have time to do during the term".

This one is the final wallpaper in the "Shema" series. The Hebrew is from the Shema and translates as:And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

And You Shall Write

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a particularly onerous task out of the way. It was not fun to do but I'm glad that it's finally "done".

And You Shall Bind

This one is the sixth wallpaper in the "Shema" series. The Hebrew is from the Shema and translates as:And you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes.

And You Shall Bind

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to "fix" the spelling on my dad's Thunderbird Email. It turns out that the dictionary had not been loaded so the spell check was not working. The good news is that this was really easy to put right.

And You Shall Teach ...

This one is the fifth wallpaper in the "Shema" series. The Hebrew is from the Shema and translates as: And you shall teach them diligently to your children, and you shall speak of them when you sit at home, and when you walk along the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up.

And You Shall Teach

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally finishing the Final Exam for "my" Python course over at Udacity. Whilst I have learned a lot, it has also taken up a huge amount of time so it's good not to have that extra pressure.

Pesach 5772

Celebrating Pesach 5772. This is the seventh in the long running "Goshen Gazette" series.

And These Words

This one is the fourth wallpaper in the "Shema" series. The Hebrew is from the Shema and translates as: And these words that I command you today shall be in your heart.

And These Words ...

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Holidays are finally here! Do I really need to say anything more?

Wednesday, April 04, 2012

And You Shall Love...

This one is the third wallpaper in the "Shema" series. The Hebrew is from the Shema and translates as: And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

And You Shall Love ...

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: That one of my top students was able to help me with a Visual Basic / macro question which was making me crazy. The solution was simple but finding it without his assistance would have been really difficult.

Tuesday, April 03, 2012

Blessed Be ...

This one is the second in the "Shema" series. The Hebrew is from the Shema and translates as: Blessed be the Name of His glorious kingdom for ever and ever.

Blessed Be ...

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Realising that the answers to all of the visual basic programming problems for one of the classes that I teach have been provided on CD. My students have not figured this out yet and I'm not planning on telling them! We are all slowly getting the hang of visual basic but to be honest, I'm not a big fan. I think python might be a better choice for a whole bunch of reasons.

Hear O'Israel

This one is the first in a series. The Hebrew is from the Shema and translates as: Hear, Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One.

Hear O' Israel ...

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a 'planning' extension. We were supposed to file our planning by the end of the term. Happily my boss has extended this by a week meaning that I can do the planning in the first week of the holidays which is a relief.

Sundance

When two fractal suns meet, this is what happens.

Sundance

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: A fun night out. It's almost a pity that I have to go to school in the morning.
