Beach Day

Presenting a fractal seaside.

Today's Gratitude Item: That today went well. It was the first day this year where I got to teach kids again and so far so good. My tutor group seem to be really lovely which is great.

Wednesday, January 30, 2013

Reminded me of a possible colour concept (palette). Would probably taste good too.

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to make contact with the parents of all the students in my tutor group. This is a worthwhile (but time consuming) task and it is great to have that 'out of the way'.

Magic Carpet

Had to distort this one (in PaintShop Pro) but it turned out well in the end.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding a really shiny 50c coin on my walk. It was good to get out and have some 'thinking' time after a busy 'teacher only day' back at school.

Many Squares

The 'strict geometry' of this one is really appealing.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting organised for dance camp in May. Flights and accommodation are booked and I'm looking most forward to the event.

Golden Track

This is one is simply weird. At least it has a 'metallic' thing going for it.

Today's Gratitude Item: That tomorrow is Auckland Anniversary day. This means everyone in Auckland gets the day off! It also means a 4 day week which is a lovely way to ease back into the school year.

Took forever to get the white outer glow to cooperate.

Today's Gratitude Item: Discovering a copy of Jeffrey Archer's Only time Will Tell at my local library. I love Jeffrey Archer and am enjoying this novel immensely. Even better is being able to request the other books in this series and read them in due course.

Hex Connection

This one could be a track / path of some description.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally figuring out how to create a new 'split' database using OpenOffice Base. Suffice it to say, the process of figuring this out was rather painful and it's a relief to have the answer.

Copper Gold Braid

The 'strict' geometry of this one is rather appealing.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding the charger cable for my Logitech wireless headphones. I have not used them for a while and put the charger in what I though was an obvious place. Only it wasn't. Thus much time was spent hunting for the thing and much relief was felt upon it's eventual discovery.

Double Diamond

Sometimes naming these images is really easy. This was one of those times. I created a screen cast showing how this one was made - partly because I wanted to test out the microphone on my new headset.

Today's Gratitude Item: Figuring out how to customise a google form. The cool thing is, the information from the form is still gathered into a spreadsheet.

Spine Flower

This one proved to be a bit of a challenge to produce. Creating the background was easy, combining it with the original fractal - not so much.

Today's Gratitude Item: Successfully recreating 'my' database (as in the one that got corrupted yesterday). It did not take nearly as long as feared and did not crash once - so the 'split database' solution seems to be working. Now I need to figure out how to teach my students to do something similar (but simpler).

Pastel Work

This one is similar to previous works but I liked it so it got rendered.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the database I developed in Open Office Base was rendered useless by data corruption (a known 'issue' with OOoBase -I thought I was immune and that data corruption only happened to 'other people')! This is an odd thing to be grateful for but it made me realise that 'split databases' are the way to go (as in this effectively resolves the data corruption issue). Also, I had not really started using the database so did not lose any vital information. Having this experience will change the way that I teach the Unit on databases this year and I am grateful that I have not yet made any teaching resources for this based on the 'old' way of doing things. In summary, things went a bit 'pear shaped' today but it could have been a whole lot worse.

Pixel Play

The squares reminded me of pixels and I was playing :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Downloading Angry Birds (Rio) for free. It was located using one of the free app finders that I monitor and I'm enjoying this version a lot more than the original. Sometimes mindless fun is a good thing.

Look Deeper

If you look below the surface, interesting things emerge.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding a multi-card reader that has a slot which fits the card from my phone. I've been meaning to get one for a while as I could not easily access photos that I'd taken with my phone. It turns out that all along my dad had the multi-card reader and he did not know what it was (he thought it was a broken USB stick).

Calm Disturbance

Perhaps this one should have been called "making waves".

Today's Gratitude Item: That google calendar's import feature was 'playing nice' today. In the past this 'feature' has been quite temperamental / unco-operative so being able to import my schedule for 2013 with minimum fuss was quite a relief.

Endless Fall

The colours are reminiscent of autumn and as we all know, spirals are endless.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting the database I was developing in Open Office Base to co-operate. Said database is not yet complete but it does most of what it needs to do. All that is missing are some queries so that I can create 'reports' which will detail how much time students have missed in class for various reasons. This will be useful to know when looking at grades and explaining why students have not done as well as they otherwise might have. The school where I work is obsessed with 'tracking students' (don't ask!) and having this data will make my life a lot easier.

Time Check

Reminded me of a chequered hour glass, hence the title.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the package of dance costumes I sent to a my old Israeli dance teacher (who now lives in Aussie) arrived safely. In my world, the best packages are accompanied by a nice friendly "old style" letter (it does not have to be hand written - typed and printed out is perfect). There is nothing quite as 'sad' / sterile as receiving a package with no note.

Feathered Friends

If you use your imagination, this one could be a close up of feathers from an exotic bird.

Today's Gratitude Item: Results from last year's final exams were released today and my students did reasonably well (better than expected in a few cases). Happily there were no big nasty surprises. Last time around some of my best students who submitted really good work did not pass (dodgy markers). Fortunately, this time around things went mostly to plan.

Woven Diamonds

I made a screencast / tutorial at the same time as creating this one. The only difference between this and the screencast is that I redid the glow in PSP which I'm a lot more familiar with than GIMP (long story).

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting to read White Picket Prisons which was written by Phil a fellow blogger and on-line buddy of mine. Needless to say, I enjoyed the book immensely and at times found myself laughing out loud.

Double Quick Weave

The sphere fractal is a variation of the woven background. Hence this one required double the normal amount of work. Happily, it was still quick to create.

Today's Gratitude Item: Still being on holiday. Despite those annoying 'back to school' adds, my holidays are not quite over. This is a good thing as I loads that I want to get done before returning to work.

Something that is both "the same" and "a bit different".

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding some handy small plastic 'boxes' for storing small portions of home-made frozen dessert. The nicest thing about said frozen dessert is that it is much lower in calories than traditional ice-cream.

Friday, January 11, 2013

Ring Pearl

This one was easier to create than one might think. It's good when that happens.

Today's Gratitude Item: This Apophysis tutorial which helped me to break a bit of a "dry spell". Sometimes it's useful to see what others are doing and experiment with 'new' variations.

Gold and Green

Not the most original title but I was tired and short of time when this one was created.

Today's Gratitude Item: Spring (or should that be 'mid summer') cleaning. Finally got rid of a large number of obsolete books and other 'stuff' that was cluttering up my cupboard. It is amazing what tends to accumulate in dark corners and it's nice to have everything neat and organised.

Wednesday, January 09, 2013

Meshy Green

Sometimes zooming in *a lot* leads to quite cool results.

Today's Gratitude Item: New socks. When one walks a lot things tend to wear out - so being able to find high quality cheap socks makes life easy. The fact that said socks have a funky design was an added bonus.

Spiky Sea

Created as a demonstration (screencast). Not my best efforts but things never go that well when you're trying to show how it's done. Said screencast is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting closer to understanding how to create databases that conform to third normal form. Progress was mainly thanks to a video that one of my colleagues created and then shared with me. Said video is aimed at first timers and shows a solution to a classic database 'problem' in a way that is very easy to understand.

Purple Grass

Another fractal created from "demo" purposes. This one uses very similar params to "Spiky Sea" (which will feature in tomorrow's post).

Today's Gratitude Item: Frozen chocolate / coffee home-made dessert. Basically we took our favourite chocolate / coffee frappe mix and put it in our newly acquired ice cream maker. It worked a treat (pun totally intended).

Mist Opportunity

This one was easily named (and fun to make).

Today's Gratitude Item: Garden grown beans. I usually microwave frozen beans and enjoy them with my breakfast. Let's just say that garden grown, fresh beans taste much nicer than the frozen stuff - which is really saying something because the frozen stuff (re-heated of course) is pretty good.

Mid Winter

This one was created way back in June and is the result of being really cold whilst working! It seems like a distant dream given our current (hot) weather and is officially dedicated to those in the Northern hemisphere who are still in the middle of winter.

Today's Gratitude Item: Figuring out how to use InDesign's "package" feature. I seriously love that program!

Girl Worm

Clipart was inspired by a child's toy spotted at one of the speciality stores on my walking route. My dad took a photo of it with his blackberry and emailed it to me on the spot. The original worm was green but this one is nicer.

Today's Gratitude Item: That things are slowly getting back to normal after the holiday madness. It's nice to see shops starting to open again after their New Year break and I'm looking forward to the disappearance of the Christmas decorations that are still around in some places.

Boy Worm

Threw biological accuracy out the window with this one. Many worms are, in fact hermaphrodite and they don't have cartoon eyes. Thank goodness for cartoonist's license.

Today's Gratitude Item: Taking a break from "working" on my computer. I just did not feel like doing any illustrating / fractal creation - so I worked on a jigsaw puzzle instead. It was fun and different.

Wednesday, January 02, 2013

Wave Web

Presenting yet another classic sphere on an 'interesting' background.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the locust illustration I created for a recent project turned out well. It turns out that when it comes to applying colour, "less" is almost always "more".

Slow Sunset

Slow to create - quick to render.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finishing my Purim graphic. Said image took a long time to create and I'm relieved that it's done. Needless to say, it will feature on this blog in due course.
