One Fine Day

Named because the spiral is rather bright - like the sun on a fine day.

Today's Gratitude Item: The beautiful scarves / sashes that one of my dancers made for our upcoming performance. We chose the fabric together (it's silky, shiny and very pretty) and she then went home and spent ages at her sewing machine. The results are magnificent and I'm looking most forward to wearing mine. Thanks Carolyn. You are the best!

Weave Spinner

The parameters for this one are really similar to those which created "One Fine Day". It's amazing what a bit of manipulation and a colour change can do.

Today's Gratitude Item: Open ID. I've had to stop allowing anonymous comments due to comment spam but having Open ID means that most people can still comment on my work without having to sign up for yet another random on-line account.

Silk Sensation

Reminded me of woven silk...

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting home safely. My return flight from camp in a tiny 19 seater airplane was blissfully uneventful. Small planes make me nervous and uneventful is very, very good.

As in a circle, squared.

Today's Gratitude Item: Three great days filled with dancing. As always, camp has been really fun and I'm amazed at how quickly the weekend has disappeared.

5774 Yom HaShoah

This one contains over 1800 names of those who perished in the Holocaust. The names are from the Central Database of Shoah Victims' Names. The names are clearly visible in the 'original' version of the image.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Shared toast for breakfast. Did not have time to buy my own bread yesterday but one of the dancers at camp was more than happy to share. Said toast was, of course, delicious.

Diamond Patch

Quick and easy

Today's Gratitude Item: Free wireless at the hotel where I am staying. Won't have much time to use it though as the focus at the moment is dance camp :)

Cold Textured Ocean

A while back, I updated an old tutorial and created this in the process. The video is here.

Today's Gratitude Item: Downloading the latest version of Apophysis! It's the same as always with some different plugins and a few interesting new features. Was enough to keep the creativity flowing.

Round About Way

Reminded me of a Traffic Circle. Here in NZ, we have loads of these and they are called "Round Abouts".

Today's Gratitude Item: Winter Pyjamas! Night time temperatures here in Auckland have 'dipped' in recent days and there is a decided chill in the air.

Tuesday, April 22, 2014

As in it reminded me of a very fancy tree trunk.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to eat bread again! Pesach is over and let's just say it's amazing how great bread tastes after eight days of matzos.

Morning Joy

In my world, a Saturday morning sunrise looks like this.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding Terry Pratchett's The Fifth Elephant as an eBook from my local library. I ran out of paper books to read and said library was closed because of the Easter break. The novelty of being able to download fun holiday reading has not yet worn off. Almost as good is the fact that I can read the book on my iPad without needing to turn on the lights.

Diamond Wrap-sody

It involves diamonds being wrapped into a sphere.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the weather only turned to custard after I was back from my morning walk. The garden sort of needs the rain and it made for a nice day spent indoors.

Check Point

A checkered pattern that has a point.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the sushi shop which I frequent on Saturdays was open today. We're in the middle of Easter weekend and with public holidays yesterday and tomorrow, I'd anticipated said shop being closed for the holidays. In a way, it would have been good for the owners to take a well deserved break but seen as they were open, I made the most of the opportunity.

Waffle Wind

Waffle Pattern + Windmill :)

Today's Gratitude Item: A perfect day! There is nothing sweeter than being left to one's own devices on the first day of school holidays.

Step and Turn

Complicated but fun. This sort of describes my life.

Today's Gratitude Item: That it's easy to bribe kids! At the end of term, we have to put all the classroom furniture on one side of the room (neatly stacked) so that the cleaners can do their thing. Happily the kids will do this in under 10 minutes - especially when they know they will get rewarded with fizzy lollies (which, according to my seniors, are better than chocolate).

Wednesday, April 16, 2014

There's a song about this one..

Today's Gratitude Item: That tomorrow is the last day of *very* long term. Can't wait for the 'holiday'. I use the word 'holiday' in the loosest possible sense as I still have loads of school work to do - which is nothing new.

Alien at Dawn

This one looked like an alien plant of some description.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being up-to-date on all my marking. Trust me when I say that this is no small feat.

Pesach Sameach 5774

Presenting the 9th in the series. Figuring out headlines for this one was harder than anticipated.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Being 'busy good' rather than 'busy bad / frustrating'. Things at school are slightly insane but at least the end of this term is in sight. Everyone is counting down.

Sunday, April 13, 2014

Zig Zag Star Swirl

A bit chunky for my liking but that's the way it goes.

Today's Gratitude Item: Not having to wait in line! Did a bit of shopping this morning and was really pleased that getting 'in and out' was quick and painless.

Furling Flag

Hopefully this one will find a home on someone's desktop!

Today's Gratitude Item: A successful search. Needed to find something which was in a weird place - finally locating said item was something of a relief.

Flowing Seas

This is a variation on a theme. The soothing colours are perfect for a hot summer day.

Today's Gratitude Item: Even though some of my Video Conference students are not meant to be at school next week as it's a 'Teacher Only Day' they will come in especially for my class. This makes life a lot easier for me.

Sphere Within

Took a while to get this one 'just right' - but it was worth the extra time.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finishing earlier than expected. My PD was useful, informative and shorter than anticipated. Had a great time sharing ideas with colleagues and learning how to adjust / change assessment tasks so that they are valid and relevant to our students.

Cool Corners

This is half of a fractal generated using the "Glynnia" variation.

Today's Gratitude Item: Not having to go to school tomorrow (again). Have another 'Professional Development' day and am looking forward to it. Turns out tomorrow is a 'half day' as there is a 'paid union meeting' so I only had to set work for one class. Am not part of the Union mostly because I disagree with their philosophy and they have too many boring meetings. They also spend a lot of time complaining and being really negative. I know Unions have their place, and am simply grateful that belonging to a Union is not mandatory.

Bright Soundz

Presenting yet another "visual sound waves" fractal.

Today's Gratitude Item: That our irrigation system (which was partially dug up by contractors putting in ultra fast broadband in the street outside our house) has been repaired. I complained to the company doing the digging and was pleasantly surprised by the speed of their response. They made the repair today while I was at school and everything is now better than it was before.

Bow Butterfly

Cross a bow-tie and a butterfly, add some string / wire and this is the result.

Today's Gratitude Item: That one of my students surprised me by submitting outstanding work (worth credits). He did exactly what I asked and will probably be shocked (in a good way) with his results. It's a pity this does not happen more often.

Spinning Coins

Imagine it was possible to spin a bunch of coins at once. This is what it would look like if photographed in slow motion.

Today's Gratitude Item: The team I was on won 'Trivial Pursuits' for the second year in a row. Some of the questions were really obscure but a lot of fun was had by all.

Saturday, April 05, 2014

Modern Hippy

Perhaps this one should have been called "Graceful Flower Power".

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting an extra hour's sleep! Daylight saving has finally ended which means that it won't be pitch black when I wake up 'early' for school on Monday.

Beautiful Game (Revisited)

There's a long (slightly boring) story behind this one. The grey was a request and it was nice not to have to worry about colour for a change.

Today's Gratitude Item: My conference presentation on screencasting went well. Was surprised how many partipants in my session wanted to learn more about creating eBooks using Sigil.

Thursday, April 03, 2014

Heart String Sphere

If you look closely, you'll see the heart in this one. Can't see it? Try squinting. A lot.

Today's Gratitude Item: Not having to go to school tomorrow. Am presenting at a conference instead. They say a change is as good as a holiday and whilst I would really like a holiday, having a bit of a change will suffice.

Metallic Magic 3.0

I've used the title "Metallic Magic" before - hence the need for a version number.

Today's Gratitude Item: Light relief. A colleague shared this video with me and it made me smile.

Geometric Sunrise

If only sunrise really looked like this!

Today's Gratitude Item: That the guest speaker I organised for my senior students did a great job of explaining 'agile' methodology. Not too sure about the kids but I learned a lot!
