Here's Looking At You

This one is only slightly creepy.

Today's Gratitude Item: A long weekend :) Not having to get up before dawn for three blissful days in a row is something worth celebrating.

Crazy Fence

Complete with flowers. This one is a variation on a theme.

Today's Gratitude Item: A heated car seat! Going to school this morning with my car pool buddy was heavenly.

Rings are very useful for joining things together :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Reasonably priced fuel. For some reason, the gas station near my house was 6 cents a liter cheaper than the one 35 km away (near my work). Happily, I had enough fuel to get to the cheaper station.

Nice and orderly is good. Might be a bit too structured for some.

Today's Gratitude Item: That finishing a layout for our local community magazine did not take as long as feared. Hopefully there are no further issues as they want to print it tomorrow.

Angel Ring

If you squint and use your imagination, this one could be a stylised angel.

Today's Gratitude Item: Cancelled meetings. It's good when one is 'gifted' some extra time to do important 'stuff' (like prepare resource / grade student work).

Slightly Sea Sick

For some reason looking at this one for too long makes me queasy.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to use the sidewalk outside my house again. The utility company is in the process of 'upgrading' the broad band infrastructure which basically involves digging up large parts of the sidewalk, running various pipes / cables and *eventually* filling it back in again. For months going for a walk has involved risking life and limb and walking down the middle of the road. Now things are finally *almost* back to normal.

Winter Argyle

The slight 3D effect was a nice surprise.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally having time to retrieve some vital fonts from my 'old' computer.

Square Hole

As in a hole that sucks in squares.

Today's Gratitude Item: That most my Video Conference students did really well on their recent assessment. It was not a surprise as there are a number of outstanding students in that class who have put in a lot of hard work. Needless to say, I was very proud of them.

Great Gauze Mosaic

This one is a variation on a theme which worked out well.

Today's Gratitude Item: Putting the left over pita chips from dance to good use. Took said left overs to school and shared with our Middle school team. Instead of pairing the chips with dip, I printed out a bunch of semi-random IT 'tips' and encouraged teachers to help themselves to some chips and 'tips'. The teachers loved the idea and this seems like a fun way of imparting small 'bites' of information.

Race Colours

The checkered design is reminiscent of a racing flag. Took ages to find a fractal which could 'take' the crystal bell clip-art.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting home at a reasonable hour. After two days with early starts and late finishes it was nice get home well before sunset.

Nuclear Pink

Reminded me of part of the 'radioactive' hazard symbol.

Today's Gratitude Item: A lovely little google form 'script' called 'formRanger' which allows one to populate a drop down list in a google form with data from a spreadsheet. Needless to say this is an incredibly useful feature. Installing it was quick and relatively painless.

Odd Man Out

As in the green square is 'odd man out' - all his mates are purple.

Today's Gratitude Item: That occasionally an email which is ‘left’ for a brief time gets resolved without any input from me. This does not happen as often as I'd like...

String Bead

Wish they made beads that looked like this in the 'real' world.

Today's Gratitude Item: Realising that even though I 'lost' quite a few fonts when I re-installed Windows, they are not gone forever. In fact, I still have my 'old' machine and can recover most of the missing material from it without too much drama. Once things are back to normal, will add the font folder to the list of material that needs to be backed up onto my external hard drive.

Virtual Keyhole

Which begs the question, what does the key that unlocks this door look like?

Today's Gratitude Item: Figuring out how to fix Chrome on my desktop. It kept coming up with 'Bing' when I opened a new tab which was extremely annoying. Turns out that there is a 'Restore' link a the bottom of the 'Bing' page and if you click it, the problem disappears.

10th Blogiversary: Straight and Narrow (Revisited)

This blog is 10 years old today. Time really flies when you are having fun.

As for the image below, sometimes 'simple' is good.

Today's Gratitude Item: After many years of using gmail, have finally figured out how to turn off the 'conversation' setting. Said setting was problematic when sending group emails as it was very easy to miss individual replies (maybe that's just me). Having this turned off is makes my life a lot easier.

Flower Squared

If only one could get mosaic tiles that looked like this...

Today's Gratitude Item: Free coffee this morning. It made the perfect start to what was a cold and rainy day (somehow the weather is not so bad when one is ‘buzzing’ from a healthy does of caffeine).

Wednesday, May 14, 2014

Candy Star

As in the centre of this one reminds me of boiled sugar candy.

Today's Gratitude Item: Winning a 45g KitKat when I filled up with fuel after dance class. The gas station was having a 'scratchy' promotion and were giving out cards if you spent over $20.00 on fuel. The prize is not huge, but it was pleasantly unexpected.

Sunrise on Water

In which no sunrise or water are in evidence.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my computer seems to be better. After my 'spoke to soon...' fears last night, it blue screened with a BAD_POOL_CALLER error. It looks like AVG antivirus was responsible. The error occurred 87% of the way through a system scan and a google search confirmed that others have had this issue. I've uninstalled AVG (who knew I'd be grateful for Windows Defender) and am holding my breath and hoping that things will be back to 'normal' in the not too distant future.

Say Again...

Named for the repeating pattern and the fact that this theme revisits earlier work.

Today's Gratitude Item: Re-installing windows seems to have fixed my computer issues. Am almost afraid to post this as I'm haunted by the phrase 'speaking too soon'. Time will tell (fingers crossed!)

Zion Flower

Revisited an old favourite. Was fun at the time.

Today's Gratitude Item: That our dance performance went well. Everyone had a good time and afterwards people from the audience came up to us and said they enjoyed watching us. Hopefully at least some of the people who took fliers during intermission will decide to join our group.

Fragile Life

The butterfly is based on a photograph I took some years back. It took more than 10 hours to illustrate. Happily, it's now a vector so it's easy to resize.

Today's Gratitude Item: That at least when my computer crashed unexpectedly, I did not lose any work. Was in the middle of uploading material to Shutterstock but fortunately it had saved my work so I did not need to re-keyword (which would have been painful / annoying). If I could figure out whether the 'BAD_POOL_CALLER' issue is going to re-occur (and how it could be fixed) things would be even better.

Gold Leaf

An old style revisited. Was pleased with the outcome

Today's Gratitude Item: That it is possible to have multiple google accounts and switch between them. My computer had a 'hissy fit' yesterday which resulted in all my programs being wiped (fortunately my files were not affected). This means my mail program (and my contacts) sort of 'died'. I could go through the pain and inconvenience of trying to restore said software but given that I'm not certain my system is "OK", have decided to use gmail as a mail client as it has good spam filters and a great 'contact' system.

Beach Ware 3.0

You've heard of 'software', here is some 'beach ware'. Jandals in the corner inspired by a photograph I took some time ago (Jandals is Kiwi for "flip flops").

Today's Gratitude Item: That my computer is 'sort of' working again. Was having problems with a slow start up (which began after a windows update) and a system restore made it worse! Ended up having to 'refresh' windows 8 which means I have the joys of having to re-install most of the software I use. It will be interesting to see if the 'fix' worked. Perhaps the only good thing about this mess is that the computer is quite new and *hopefully* still under guarantee / warranty.

Scary Story

Even though it's a sunny day, the story in the book is literally hair-raising.

Today's Gratitude Item: A really great turn out for dance class. It was lovely to dance in a 'big' circle.

Clothes Maketh the Man-nequin

This one was inspired by a clothed mannequin spotted on one of my colleagues desks. The quotation means
"Let your clothes be made as strong as mangemange which never wears out." (Source is here).

Today's Gratitude Item: Being given the opportunity to promote my dance group during 'intermission' at the concert we are performing at on Sunday. It should be a really great event and I'm looking forward to it.

Yom Ha'atzmaut 5774

Had fun with this one, even though it took ages to create. Immigration statistics were found here (

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: That one of my students did a 'proof of concept' exercise which and made a mini-game that works on both computers and iPads. It was great to see that progress is being made.

Yom Hazikaron 5774

For Israel's fallen...

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: GIMP's 'make seamless' filter. I might have posted this one before but when used as intended, it is incredibly powerful and it makes creating tileable patterns relatively easy.

Whanganui Fishing

Whanganui (or Wanganui) is famous for it's river and the fact that people get quite exercised about how it should be spelled.

Today's Gratitude Item: This Apophysis Tutorial. Following the instructions and then having a nice long play has lead to some interesting images.

Fractal Fly Trap

The day this was made was one of 'those' days where nothing quite worked as hoped.

Today's Gratitude Item: Walking earlier rather than later. Not only was it much colder, but it meant being able to get more done today which was good because it has been quite busy.
