Golden Arrows

Named by my dad who saw the image on the screen and liked it :)

Today's Gratitude Item: No 'trick or treaters'! My handmade "Halloween Free Zone' signs that were tied to our gates worked perfectly. I've always hated Halloween as it celebrates fear, death and evil. Shouldn't we be encouraging our young people to look beyond themselves and care about their communities? What message does dressing them up in scary costumes and enabling them to blackmail complete strangers send?

Floral Ascention

Presenting a new kind of 'sun flower'.

Today's Gratitude Item: A magnificent day. It was one of those rare occasions where everything that could go right, did!

Summer Champaign

The glass in this one falls under the 'happy coincidence' heading.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my senior assessments are officially 'done'. Needless to say, it's a great feeling for me and the kids.

Summer Ripple

Simple but fun. Another variation on a very common theme.

Today's Gratitude Item: An unexpectedly great morning tea. Some staff are leaving in the near future and this time around, the food put on for their 'farewell' was fantastic. Not having to pack lunch this morning was an added benefit.

Hole Flower

As in a flower in a hole.

Today's Gratitude Item: The end is in sight. Just one more school day to go before my seniors need to hand in their final piece of work. After that I think we will all breathe a sigh of relief. Here's hoping they manage to get everything done (gotta love teenagers who leave things to the last minute).

Midnight Target

Strange things can happen in the middle of the night.

Today's Gratitude Item: "Better late than never" - as in some of my students have finally uploaded essays to receive feedback. It's late but fortunately (for them), not too late. Sadly those who have completed the work in 'good time' remain in the minority.

Sunday, October 25, 2015

This one is a variation on a theme. As usual, it looked pretty so it got rendered.

Today's Gratitude Item: That this time next week, the Rugby World Cup will be over. It will be interesting to see who wins!

Copper Compass

Turned out better than expected.

Today's Gratitude Item: That some nasty weather cleared enough to make an afternoon walk feasible.

Friday, October 23, 2015

Infinite Jade

This one was a nice surprise - especially the bit in the middle.

Today's Gratitude Item: That Monday is a public holiday and Tuesday is a 'half day' due to a union meeting that I don't have to go to. Did I mention that we normally have meetings on Monday afternoons and next week those meetings simply won't happen. Right now, life is very good.

Plain Weave

This one has a light background because quite a bit of detail got 'lost' on a black background

Today's Gratitude Item: That the end is in sight. It's hard to believe that my senior students have only six school days to go before the start of exam leave.

Gentle Cascade

Oceans don't always have to be blue - especially in my world.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting three out of four 'Unit Plans' for one of my revised course done today. It's a tedious job and it was good to get it done relatively quickly.

Checking String

Another image where 'light' turned out to be 'better'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting not one but two cool T-Shirts from "Art Heros". They are an organisation which matches designers with community groups who need help creating marketing materials etc. Designers work for free and are able to get experience / build their portfolios. Upon completion of their first successful project, they get sent T-Shirts. Needless to say, I was not expecting Art Heroes to be prepared to send said shirts all the way to NZ (and receiving them in the mail was a lovely surprise).

Disc Blind

As in woven blinds with a faint disc pattern.

Today's Gratitude Item: A better than expected Professional Development session after school. It's good when that happens.

Networked Solution

This one took a while to appear, happily the wait was worthwhile.

Today's Gratitude Item: Choosing to wear my hat when walking even though it was overcast. It turns out that said hat provides not only protection from the sun, but today, it provided protection from a 'crappy' bird. The situation reminded me of my grandfather who, in a similar situation, would have said "for others they sing".

Lucky Diamond

Got 'lucky' with this one. Hence the title.

Today's Gratitude Item: An enjoyable read in the form of Daniel Silva's "The Heist". Whilst the plot seemed to follow Silva's usual formula, it was a lot better than most of the other 'stuff' out there.

Octagonal Musings

This one turned out much better than expected. To be fair - some post processing was involved.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting my last bit of 'external moderation' organised. This past week time has both dragged and sped past. It feels as if school has been back for much longer than a week but the weekend arrived really quickly.

Floor Tiles

When this one first appeared, I really liked it. Now I'm not so sure. In retrospect it is both too dark and too busy.

Today's Gratitude Item: Tough decisions. We are almost at the end of the year and I need to choose the 'best' student in each of my courses. For some courses that is very easy as one student stands out. Fortunately, in my one class, I have several really strong students doing amazing work. The only 'problem' is that working out who gets the top prize is turning out to be incredibly hard.

Block Flower

The 'inverted' / dark version did not look great so a more subtle approach was required.

Today's Gratitude Item: One of my dancers was back in class after a trip overseas. She gave me one of the nicest key rings that I have ever seen which was a lovely gesture and an totally unexpected surprise. Almost as good is the fact that the key ring has cultural significance to me (but not to most New Zealanders) - this means that I can use it as an example of 'good design' which is specific to a certain cultural group (this is something which will be really helpful for my 12th grade class).

Midnight Kisses

As in the shape reminded me of Hershey kisses.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having space on my wall for a series of inspirational quotes / posters. They were printed out today and the plan is to put them up tomorrow morning before school.

Monday, October 12, 2015

Basic Peas

Perhaps this one should have been called 'Geometric dot ripples'...

Today's Gratitude Item: Well trained students. At the end of each term we get to stack the chairs and desks in a corner so that the room can be cleaned in the holidays. When we get back, everything needs to be put back to normal. My students have got this down to an art form and it is great to see them getting the job done with minimum fuss and a fair bit of good humour.

Three O'Clock Special

If this was a fractal time piece, it would be 3:00pm.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding two really cool jigsaw puzzles which will be completed during the December holidays (which are two short months away).

Saturday, October 10, 2015

Fuzzy Pink Accessory

This one would make a very funky hair band.

Today's Gratitude Item: A memorable misunderstanding (have not laughed so hard in ages).

Friday, October 09, 2015

Big Machine

As in a large entity made of many very small cogs.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally understanding why the 'delete rectangle' command was not working in one of my programs. It's a long (quite technical) story but it ended well so it's all good.

Thursday, October 08, 2015

Hole Story

Even though there is a hole in this one, nothing is missing.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the hot air balloon image I recycled for a one of my 'Chag Images' had the right number of panels so only a small amount of tweaking was required. Said image will appear on this blog in due course. If you want a sneak peak, you can enjoy it at the preceding link.

Wednesday, October 07, 2015

Radar Ripples

The background took this form 'marginal' to 'interesting'. In this case 'interesting' is good.

Today's Gratitude Item: Not being caught up in / delayed by a today's major accident on the motorway. Said accident was just North of where I get on the motorway and had it happened slightly further South, it would have been a very different story.

Tuesday, October 06, 2015

Floral Burst

Turned out much better than expected.

Today's Gratitude Item: Thick home made lentil soup and the fact that it is still cold enough to enjoy said soup.

Simchat Torah 5776

Suffice it to say, this one took a while to create. Had a lot of fun with the text at the bottom although I'm wondering if the double meanings are too subtle (jokes / puns are not funny if you have to explain).

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: New dance shoes! The best part is that the price has not gone up in the past five years which is pretty amazing.

Sunday, October 04, 2015

Purple Pod

An experiment that did not quite go as planned. Then again, that is the nature of experiments.

Today's Gratitude Item: Plybond. This is basically a special kind of 'super glue' that is good for sticking soles back onto shoes. With any luck, this will mean that my comfortable leather shoes will get a new lease on life. I have to wait until the morning to see if the repair has 'stuck' (pun intended).

Saturday, October 03, 2015

Strip Spirals

As in strips in a spiral shape.

Today's Gratitude Item: Taking it easy :)

Friday, October 02, 2015

Tiny Flowers

Can't see the flowers? 'x' marks the spot!

Today's Gratitude Item: A perfectly relaxed day with more of the same coming my way tomorrow.

Feathered Diamond

I like the 'blocky' geometry of this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: Some really useful Professional Development. I'm now feeling a bit more confident about changing my level 3 program for next year.
