Floating Twin Tunnels

Perfect for both the 'high road' and the 'low road'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a lot of 'little' things done today.

Ring Flower

A disc with a difference.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting the last lot of moderation for this year done. Translation - a significant chunk of work is officially 'out of the way' and whilst I still have loads to do, the end is in sight.

Nuclear Disturbance

Yet another image reminiscent of the 'nuclear hazard' symbol.

Today's Gratitude Item: That 'Technology Showcase' has been cancelled. This event was supposed to happen next week and would have meant a very long night which wasted a lot of time and effort for minimal benefit. After last year's event, I tried pointing this out to my boss but she did not want to hear it. Happily this year the event won't go ahead. Showcase is not a bad thing if kids are making a physical outcome such as clothing / furniture. It becomes pointless when work is virtual / on-line.

Nice Splice

Tried something different and here is the result. It did not turn out as well as anticipated.

Today's Gratitude Item: The best brother ever! He helped me to set up a Word Press site for a client which means that I can get started on a very interesting project.

Silver and Fern

Took a while to 'get' this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the wind was blowing in the right direction. This meant getting to enjoy a beautiful rainbow on my walk without having to worry about being drenched.

Delicate Diamond

Getting the 'diamond' part took a lot longer than one might think.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finishing my marking (at least for now).

Sunrise on Ice

It's a good thing that fractal ice does not melt.

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to fix my colour chart program so that the labels are readable (black labels on light colours, white labels on dark colours). Whilst this sounds like something really simple, it was surprisingly tricky to implement.

Bursting Basket

Had fun creating this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: Marking two classes worth of programming assessments. It took a while and was a bit tedious but I'm very glad that it is done.

Tuesday, August 23, 2016

Flower Ring

Target practice anyone?

Today's Gratitude Item: Making significant progress on my marking pile. Am hoping for more of the same tomorrow.

Flower Box

This one was post-processed a bit - originally it was only half as good.

Today's Gratitude Item: Writing a Python program to automatically copy and rename a .pdf to generate marking sheets for my students. When faced with 80 files that needed to be created and individually named, writing a program to do the hard work made sense. This time around, things went remarkably smoothly. That almost never happens. Usually I go around in tight little circles for days trying to figure out how to get something to work.

Iridescent Joy

Describes how I felt when it appeared on my screen.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally figuring out how to edit the volume of individual cartoon characters so that they can be heard in a video that I recently made. The process is easy but not obvious. If you are curious about said video, you can see it on my other blog.

Networked Solution

For once everything just worked with minimal effort on my part.

Today's Gratitude Item: That Winter Warm Up (a big event on the International / Folk Dance calendar) went really well.

String Rings

This one did not turn out quite as well as anticipated.

Today's Gratitude Item: Writing a simple python program which lets me see the range of colours that are possible when the bits assigned to each channel are limited. I needed to do this to be able to explain the concept of 'representing colour' to my Computer Science class. Said program was a bit tricky to create but it works quite well.

Copper Washers

Fun but the variation that I used will only give a maximum of four 'tiles' which is sometimes less than ideal.

Today's Gratitude Item: Making progress on an animation that I've been working on for a while. Said progress is still very slow but at least I'm no longer going backwards.

Feather Wrapsody

As in a feather wrapped up in fractal string.

Today's Gratitude Item: A brilliant turn out for dance class. This could be a sign that the weather is getting warmer as more people turn up to class when it is not horrible and rainy.

Igloo

In my world, pointy is the new 'round'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting through a very long day. Left home at 6:45 am, returned just before 9:00 pm. Am looking forward to the weekend and it's only Tuesday...

Light Radar

As in a radar pattern created by a fractal flash light.

Today's Gratitude Item: Usability that is so bad, it's good. One of the small programs that I'll be using for my Computer Science class features a button with a "Jolly Roger" symbol. Said button is actually the delete key. I'm guessing they could not find a suitable trash icon anywhere. This breaks two of our usability rules (ie: the rules which say systems should stick to known conventions and, where possible match the real world). It's normally quite difficult to find examples of these rules being broken so this was quite a 'find'.

Magic Ribbons

It turns out that curves can be really good.

Today's Gratitude Item: The first signs of spring. It's official - the worst of winter is over as evidenced by the three gorgeous daffodils which have recently opened in our garden. Even better, there are more to come.

Tisha B'Av 5776

This one is always hard...

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Not having loads of marking to do. My students are all currently working on assessments which means that I get a brief break from marking. Only problem is, the hiatus is akin to the calm before a rather large storm.

Modern Star

the background was yet another experiment which turned out well.

Today's Gratitude Item: Lamb Pie for dinner - this is a rare, super delicious treat. It's also perfect for the current cold weather.

Blue Twist

Finding a suitable name for this one was something of a challenge.

Today's Gratitude Item: Unexpected coffee - which is always a good thing :)

Wednesday, August 10, 2016

Gold Thread

Proving once again that 'less is more'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally being toasty and warm on a very cold day. It was freezing in my classroom at school and getting home was a welcome relief.

Tuesday, August 09, 2016

Big "O"

Or should that be 'big oh!' - this one was a bit of a surprise :)

Today's Gratitude Item: That the days are finally getting longer - noticed that it was not quite as dark as it has been when I left for work this morning.

Net Spiral

This combines two of my favourite things, a woven net and spirals.

Today's Gratitude Item: A mathematics lesson that went surprisingly well given that I ran out of time to adequately prepare.

Sunday, August 07, 2016

Winter Wave

With those subdued colours this wave is definitely a winter phenomen.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting considerably quicker at uploading student work to gearhost / github. Using that particular combination has allowed me to overcome the limitations of both pieces of technology.

Saturday, August 06, 2016

Rose Reflection

Simple but fun to make.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally managing to get one of my student's databases online (have several more that need to go 'up'). It's been a long and frustrating process and that particular break-through has been overdue. Am still finding my way but at least there is a hope that this difficult problem can be solved.

Friday, August 05, 2016

Feather Bunch

As in a bunch of feathers from a purple peacock.

Today's Gratitude Item: My iPad. One of my students was quite literally clowning around in my junior Math class (the behaviour was completely unacceptable). I snapped a photo of him and emailed it to his parents. Guess who is grounded this weekend! Said student also got to spend some quality time with me at lunch.

Unexpected Ripple

Was not expecting this one but it was a very pleasant surprise.

Today's Gratitude Item: Attending my first ever webinar. It was an interesting experience despite my connection at school cutting out at fairly regular intervals.

Wednesday, August 03, 2016

Spiral Dash

As in a black and white spiral with a small dash of colour.

Today's Gratitude Item: "The Desk" arrived today and it is all I hoped it would be. Being able to work on a large surface that is at the perfect height is absolutely brilliant. It was worth the wait :)

Tuesday, August 02, 2016

Intricate Curvature

Somethings look best when a black / white / grey gradient is used.

Today's Gratitude Item: Maybe finding a light at the end of my 'host student databases for free' tunnel. Here's hoping said light is not an on-coming train. I need to do a bit more work to see if the solution that I might have found is, in fact, viable.

Fern Danger

As is so often the case, it took a while to get these 'just right'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Reasonably priced petrol from an unlikely source. For the first time in ages, my local petrol station was much cheaper than the other options. Weirdly the place that used to have the best prices in Auckland no longer does (which was a bit disappointing).
