Simple Woven Flower

Hopefully the design is more inspiring than the title.

Today's Gratitude Item: The planning for the last five lessons with my 9th grade math class is all done. This might be one of the best feelings in the world. :)

Mechanical Fan

This one involved quite a bit of zooming in...

Today's Gratitude Item: Having a *much* better day than yesterday. Whilst I made only limited progress on one of the projects that I'm working on, at least some progress was made.

Weird Wrap

Was not quite sure what to do with this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: Summer pajamas and the fact that it is finally warm enough to wear them.

Monday, November 27, 2017

Perhaps this one should have been called 'making waves'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Rediscovering old resources that can be recycled. At this point, anything which keeps my students engaged and does not take ages to prepare is a good thing.

The Awakening

Sometimes the images that appear are a surprise. This was one of those times.

Today's Gratitude Item: That sometimes things don't take quite as long as feared.

Snow Angel

If you can't see the angel, try squinting / using your imagination.

Today's Gratitude Item: My mum's help making 'farewell' cards. I'm switching schools next year and have 10 school days before it's time to say 'goodbye' to colleagues. Getting this done on my own would be way harder and a lot less fun.

Ridge Ripples

I'm pretty sure we've been here before (what else is new).

Today's Gratitude Item: Starting the weekend with two new books by one of my favourite authors. Life is good :)

Woven Ice

Not quite ugly enough to 'bin' (although it came close).

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting my appraisal documentation finished and signed off. It's a necessary evil and I'm hoping that my new school has a more streamlined process for doing this.

Fragile Snow Flower

As in a flower made of snow.

Today's Gratitude Item: Cell phones! Traffic getting to dance was so bad that I was slightly late. Happily it was possible to give one of the other dancers a call which meant being able to let the everyone know that I was en-route.

Barbed Wire

If you add ice, even the most menacing object can become quite pretty.

Today's Gratitude Item: Pizza bread! Especially home made pizza bread that tastes amazing.

Toy Bridge

It looked more 'bridge like' before it was reflected.

Today's Gratitude Item: That 'difficult' situation I blogged about last week has now been resolved. It's a huge relief to be back on track for 2018. Even better, next year instead of teaching a mix of 'Digital' and other stuff, I'll be teaching all Digital at a school which has a strong junior program. I'm sure there will be a lot to learn but I'm looking forward to the experience.

Ornament in Progress

If you are wondering how Christmas ornaments are made - here is a possible answer.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to hear the rain (even when it is not raining all that hard). It's all too easy to take some of the little things for granted!

Inevitable Spiral

The title really says it all.

Today's Gratitude Item: A very relaxing day after a very stressful week...

Hole Mask

As in a mask with very large holes for the eyes.

Today's Gratitude Item: At school there was a fairly impressive fire in our sawdust extraction unit. Luckily the damage was minimal and no one was hurt. This is the first time in my career where a fire evacuation has not been a drill. I guess it's a slow news day because the story made the NZ Herald (online edition).

Flotation Device

Also known as 'blob on the water'.

Today's Gratitude Item: That a difficult situation is in the process of being resolved. I am deeply grateful for the support of my family and current school principal at this time. It's a long, complicated story but it should end well.

Christmas Radar

The shape at the bottom left looks like a Christmas tree.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding out that someone's ethics are inconsistent with mine before it's too late.

Turkish Delight

Named for the pattern rather than the dessert.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting to experience Virtual Reality for the first time. It was intense but really cool. I can see how VR can become scarily addictive but it also has massive potential for education and training.

Tile Style

This is more of 'the same but different'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting power back! We had a power-cut earlier in the evening and let's just say that it was not fun. As always, it made me realise how reliant we are on electricity and not having power, even for a short time was deeply uncomfortable.

Scottish Sphere

The sphere ended up quite a bit brighter than anticipated.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being the proud owner of an Auckland Transport HOP card. This makes traveling by ferry / bus very easy and works out to be cheaper than paying cash / the casual rate. I don't 'bus' often but it's nice to have the option.

Friday, November 10, 2017

Christmas Star

If I celebrated, this would be on top of the tree.

Today's Gratitude Item: The start of a weekend and a new John Grisham novel to enjoy :)

Thursday, November 09, 2017

Ash Flower

In the preview, the flower looked a lot more ash-like.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the major roadworks that were making my daily commute both lengthy and painful are finally complete!

Light Curve

I liked the holes so it got rendered.

Today's Gratitude Item: Avoiding a tedious and time consuming task. Some finesse was required :)

Tuesday, November 07, 2017

Smooth Sea

Initially this one looked like a smooth wave...

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting confirmation that I'm on the right track with the resources that I'm developing for next year.

Monday, November 06, 2017

Bar Work

If the barre at ballet looked like this, I might have been more inclined to practice.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being 'off campus' today which meant not having to go to a rather tedious after school meeting. It *almost* made up for having to work yesterday.

Sunday, November 05, 2017

Diamond Tile

This was one of those *rare* times when a mosaic background was a good idea.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally having a good idea for an assessment resource I am meant to be writing. Hopefully my colleagues will agree that the context I'm planning on using is sensible.

Fan Wall

I'm sure we've been here before.

Today's Gratitude Item: CSS Grid (and finally getting it to work).

Friday, November 03, 2017

Rough Geometry

Sometimes the woven look is a good option.

Today's Gratitude Item: Today was the last day that I see my 12th graders and they pranked my classroom. Thing is, this was one of the few leaving pranks that I have experienced which was both 'kind' and very funny. Sometimes 'leaving' pranks can get way out of hand but my group went for the subtle approach. So much so, that my colleagues were not even sure I had been pranked. The in-jokes (there were several of them) were extremely funny and it was the perfect end to a really good year with this group of kids.

Horse Shoe Mussel

It turns out that horse show mussel is a poor cousin to paua (abalone). Cool thing is, the shells are easily found at my local beach and can be broken / sanded to fit a desired shape.

Today's Gratitude Item: Today was the last day that I saw my 11th Grade CS students as they go on study leave and I am switching schools next year. They organised a surprise pizza party which included a lovely vanilla cake (they know I don't eat chocolate) and they gave me flowers, a card (which most of them wrote in) and some tiramisu cake as a gift. I am deeply impressed by how thoughtful and kind 'my kids' are and am definitely going to miss teaching them next year.

Double Ripple

Simple but effective. Made with the newly discovered 'half julian' variation.

Today's Gratitude Item: Discovering the joys of the latest Beta version of Firefox. It's better than Chrome because the developer console allows users to see grid-lines if 'grid' has been used. This matters because 'grid' is a convenient way to layout pages that *finally* has wide browser support and it is something that I'll be getting my students to use going forward.
