Metal Work

The only colour that worked in this case was iron grey - so I went with it.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting my hands on the latest John Grisham novel courtesy of my local library. Said book will be devoured in due course...

Lake Ripples

For some reason when this one was made larger, the colours kept getting changed. Which was frustrating.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally finishing this year's Holocaust micrograph. These images take several days to complete and the one for 5779 will feature on this blog in due course.

Ever Crescent

Named for the crescent shapes that are hidden in the design.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally making it over the payment threshold over at Shutterstock. Things have been slow but we got there in the end.

Filligree Dusk

If it's delicate and metallic, it ends up being saved.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding a regular expression which checks comments from one of my web forms for Russian characters. If said characters are in the form, an error appears. Hopefully this will stop some of the Russian spam which is making its way into my spam folder.

Flower Lace

I'm pretty sure we've been here before...

Today's Gratitude Item: Figuring out why Illustrator was lagging when I tried to copy, paste and edit relatively small amounts of text. It turns out that if you have semi-transparent layers, things slow down dramatically. Happily, one can work on fully opaque layers (fast) and then make the layer in question semi-transparent once all the text has been placed (also fast). I suspect things tomorrow will be a lot quicker than they were today.

Fab Mats

Where once again the 'fab' stands for 'fabric'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Keeping things simple. I've taken some time to just relax and it's been wonderful.

Tuesday, December 25, 2018

Drop Fold

This is what happens when fractal origami gets wet.

Today's Gratitude Item: A brilliantly peaceful day which was not quite as wet as anticipated. As in our morning walk was not too disrupted by the rain - the rest of the day was spent indoors accompanied by light drizzle, rain and the occasional torrential cloudburst.

Monday, December 24, 2018

Camo Forest

Was not too sure about the camouflage design in this one but it ended well.

Today's Gratitude Item: That a frustrating problem I was having finally got resolved!

Sunday, December 23, 2018

Paper Bead

This one was a very nice surprise.

Today's Gratitude Item: Free, online puzzles. These are quite fun to do and are a bit different to the usual games that I might play when I have a few moments to spare. Arguably not quite as good as an actual, physical jigsaw, they are, nevertheless quite satisfying.

Saturday, December 22, 2018

Cross Fold

Tried something a bit different and this was the result.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being refreshed and recharged. Somehow it's easy to look forward to next week when 'next week' involves more holidays.

Friday, December 21, 2018

Corner Light

This is a variation on an old theme with a bit of a twist.

Today's Gratitude Item: Taking a day off from pretty much everything computer related. After four solid days of creating fractals, it was time to pause and relax and so far, it has been really good.

Thursday, December 20, 2018

Copper Wave Weave

Similar to previous works but nice enough to render.

Today's Gratitude Item: A quiet but satisfying day spent creating quite a few fractals. Said artwork will appear on this blog in due course.

Wednesday, December 19, 2018

Tidal Blanket

The 'ocean thing' strikes again...

Today's Gratitude Item: Emergency ice cream. It was hot, I was very grumpy and the ice cream helped fix both issues.

Tuesday, December 18, 2018

Spiral Shroud

The woven effect on this one made it worth rendering

Today's Gratitude Item: Having a great time reading, doing crossword puzzles and creating fractals. Holidays are the best!

Monday, December 17, 2018

Spin Ripple

It's either 'sort of ugly' or 'sort of interesting' depending on one's perspective.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a 'same day' appointment for my annual dental checkup and not needing any fillings. Today was a good day :)

Sunday, December 16, 2018

Feather Butterfly

I know we've been here before...

Today's Gratitude Item: Some extremely cheap T-Shirts! Even though clothes shopping is one of my least favourite things, bargains like this are always good.

Saturday, December 15, 2018

Owl Eyes

With this colour, these can only be fractal owl eyes.

Today's Gratitude Item: Feeling reasonably creative after a satisfying day of rest.

Friday, December 14, 2018

Golden Rain

My dad suggested the name for this one - I guess the spheres looked a bit like water droplets to him.

Today's Gratitude Item: I am officially on summer vacation! Needless to being at the start of a lovely long break is the best feeling ever.

Thursday, December 13, 2018

Gold Bench

Comfortable and decorative.

Today's Gratitude Item: Another brilliant day. We had a surprising number of puzzle orders and my students managed to print, cut, laminate, trim and complete all of them. Said students got to share in the profits of this brief lived enterprise and they were stoked.

Wednesday, December 12, 2018

Candle Work

This one is something of a happy accident. With an emphasis on the 'happy'.

Today's Gratitude Item: A brilliant day in which everything went even better than expected. School was fantastic as it turns out that my colleagues are keen to buy puzzles that my students have made (this is a massive win / win situation which has resulted in my students being exceptionally motivated). Our final dance session for the year was really lovely and everyone had a great time. All in all a perfect day.

Tuesday, December 11, 2018

Ornate Woven Candles

This one is slightly more intense than anticipated.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my colleague brought in a 550 piece jigsaw puzzle / mystery for our students to solve. Said puzzle was a great success and it was fun to watch our students collaborate and enjoy themselves.

Monday, December 10, 2018

Copper Belt

If I had one of these, I'd wear it on a regular basis.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the first day of our 'impossible puzzle' workshop went well. The kids seemed to enjoy both doing and creating the puzzles. Hopefully we will be able to keep their attention for the next three days...

Sunday, December 09, 2018

Ring Maze

I was not trying to get a ring but was pleased when this one appeared.

Today's Gratitude Item: That "Hanukah in the Bays" went brilliantly. My dance group were asked to lead the Israeli dancing and we had a lovely time. It was great to have the wider community involved in said dancing and I was thrilled by how many attendees joined our circle for the participation dances. The event was well organised, well attended and well run.

Copper Cross Connection

Simple but effective...

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a surprising amount done in a relatively short amount of time. Help from mum was involved! Needless to say, I'm super grateful for said help.

Friday, December 07, 2018

Olympic Celebration Flame

When it comes to Olympic Flames, ornate is good.

Today's Gratitude Item: Formal classes are over for the year! Next week should be different and hopefully a lot of fun. Right now, I'm ready to enjoy a busy weekend.

Thursday, December 06, 2018

Silver Spindle Fibres

Dedicated to everyone who thought 'cell division' when they saw this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: That our senior prize giving is over. Let's just say I'm not a fan of having to sit for an extended period of time listing to badly delivered speeches. There has to be a more effective way of acknowledging excellence.

Wednesday, December 05, 2018

Peculiar Plant

All to often, my computer generates really odd plant material. This was one of those times.

Today's Gratitude Item: Donuts at dance! This Chanukah treat was generously supplied by one of my dancers and they were delightful :)

Tuesday, December 04, 2018

Frond Magic

Ferns are a common occurrence - happily this one actually looks good.

Today's Gratitude Item: That tomorrow is the last day that I see my 'extra' *very junior* classes. I've had them eight hours a week for five weeks and whilst it has been really good, it has also been exhausting. Happily, the kids have seemed to enjoy the class and most have learned quite a bit.

Monday, December 03, 2018

Farm Hill

As in a hill which has been planted with fractal greenery.

Today's Gratitude Item: Most of my students are doing most of what they are meant to be doing most of the time. At this point in the year that is actually quite an achievement.

Sunday, December 02, 2018

Chanukah 5779

This one is a spin on the idea of Chanukah Gelt.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Air conditioning! It's that time of year again when the humidity can make life fairly unpleasant. Happily, working in an air conditioned room was the order of the day and I got a reasonable amount done.

Saturday, December 01, 2018

Fab Disc

Where the 'fab' stands for both 'fabric' and 'fabulous'.

Today's Gratitude Item: One week of regular classes left! I can't believe how quickly our year is coming to an end. We still have 'wider living' week after regular classes finish but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel (and this time, it's not an oncoming train).

Friday, November 30, 2018

Delicate Meeting

When networks meet, the interaction is often quite delicate.

Today's Gratitude Item: Our school timetable is back to normal. For the past two and a half weeks we have had a weird timetable (long story). It's nice to have things back as they were.

Thursday, November 29, 2018

Cross Lights

As in a cross made up of lights.

Today's Gratitude Item: That one of my clients was pleased with changes that I made to their website. It's good when that happens.

Wednesday, November 28, 2018

Radar Sky Light

As is so often the case, this one is a variation on a theme that was nice enough to be worth rendering.

Today's Gratitude Item: Tomorrow should be easier than today! Things were 'full on' and whilst they are mostly good, it will be nice not to be quite so busy.

Tuesday, November 27, 2018

Ocean Drop

Not quite a drop in the ocean.

Today's Gratitude Item: Garlic-free pizza. We ran out of garlic oil but this was a good thing as having a more 'plain' pizza worked really well :)

Monday, November 26, 2018

Turbulent Forest

Sometimes 'dark and ominous' is the order of the day.

Today's Gratitude Item: That it is very easy to embed a game / interactive content created using snap game into a google site.

Sunday, November 25, 2018

Sky Pieces

This one was interesting enough to render.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally realising that it is possible to move a selected layer in GIMP by ticking one tiny box in the 'move' area. In the past I have sometimes struggled to move things and have often ended up shifting the wrong layer (long story).

Saturday, November 24, 2018

Paper Cut

It's sometimes a challenge to get something different - so when it happens, it gets rendered.

Today's Gratitude Item: That a book I ordered from the library arrived much sooner than expected. It was mentioned in one of the sessions at the PD I went to last week and while everyone dutifully wrote down the title, I went a step further and snagged it from the library on the spot. What can I say? Internet access and an easy to use library website has made getting one's hands on 'recommended reading' a piece of cake.

Friday, November 23, 2018

Creative Curve

Yet another variation on a common theme.

Today's Gratitude Item: Three more weeks of school and then we get a nice long break.

Thursday, November 22, 2018

All Right

As in a design made up of right angled triangles.

Today's Gratitude Item: A brilliant second day at CS4HS. It included learning to code *a bit* of Javascript. That process is a lot easier (and faster) when you have expert help in the room.

Wednesday, November 21, 2018

Ocean tiles

Complete with air holes.

Today's Gratitude Item: A really fun day at CS4HS. Am looking forward to 'day 2' of the event tomorrow :)

Tuesday, November 20, 2018

Mosaic Magic

Creating images is often a bit of an adventure. This was one of those times.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my dad was right and it is still possible to catch a bus from home to Auckland University. Auckland Transport's new 'Journey Planner' is worse than useless and despite typing in Auckland University as the location, it did not come up with the correct bus. All the options suggested by the planner involved over 2km of walking (much of it uphill). Funnily enough there is an Auckland Uni bus which goes exactly where I need to go. Sadly, the 'Journey Planner' does not reflect this fact. Needless to say, scathing feedback was left on the Auckland Transport feedback form.

Monday, November 19, 2018

Key Hole

Was particularly pleased with how this one turned out.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the construction / roadworks that has been going on for months in my local area has finally come to an end. It is really nice being able to walk / drive without having to put up with work-site related detours and delays.

Sunday, November 18, 2018

Communication Tubes

All meeting at a communication hub.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding some fun binary games and a really good, short video explaining how to convert between integers and binary. I'll be using this with my 7th graders this week.

Saturday, November 17, 2018

Light Barrel

Which looks surprisingly heavy.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having time to recharge in peace and quiet.

Friday, November 16, 2018

Fresh Bamboo

This one is a variation on an old theme.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a fair amount done today. It helped that two of my most challenging students were out of class last period today which made for an easy end to a hectic week.

Thursday, November 15, 2018

Steep Side

Climbing this one would be a challenge.

Today's Gratitude Item: My appraisal at work went well. The meeting was encouraging and productive and it was nice to have a chance to show someone in senior management what we actually do in Computer Science :)

Wednesday, November 14, 2018

Rolling Waves

Again! For some reason I often end up with ocean scenes which is strange given that I don't particularly like 'the water'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having a bit of a 'lighter' day tomorrow. Today was 'full on' and I'm exhausted!

Tuesday, November 13, 2018

Power Spin

This one was a bit of a disappointment. Not quite bad enough to bin but it was a close call.

Today's Gratitude Item: Most of my 7th grade students really enjoyed the 'Run Length Encoding' exercise that we did today. This involved them figuring out a mystery image. One funny thing was the fact that a number of them figured out what the image was and then improved on it before submitting their answers!

Monday, November 12, 2018

Angular Bloom

Those petals are slightly too geometric to be real.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting the comments for my junior students' reports ready for proof reading. Writing reports might be one of my least favourite things about being a teacher so it is great to have that task mostly out of the way.
