Intense Greenery

The 3D effect on this one was something of a surprise so it got rendered.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting my car music to play in a predictable order. It turns out that on a large number micro USB / portable music devices, the tracks / albums are played in the order that they were loaded onto the device. Resorting to alphabetical order took a bit of research and an easy-to-use app. Here's a link to the 'how to' page which gave me the answer I needed.

Creased

Very similar to 'Intense Greenery' (which will feature on this blog in due course). The colours made it *just* different enough to be worth rendering.

Today's Gratitude Item: Useful resources shared by colleagues. In this case, the resource is a list of 'techniques' that might be used at various levels by our students. Having something like this that has had feedback from the wider 'Digital' teaching community is immensely helpful.

Ink Tide

It took a surprisingly long time to get the colours 'just right' on this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: Great 'car music'. The new stereo that my wonderful brother installed in my car on the weekend is awesome and now I actually look forward to time in the car (weird but true).

Infinite Pools

Perhaps this one should have been called 'infinite puddles'.

Today's Gratitude Item: A quieter than expected last period. My 12th graders had 'Academic Counseling' which meant that after checking in with me most of them were required to be elsewhere for the period. The unscheduled break was really lovely.

Silver Diamonds

Overlapping diamonds are always good. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having the best brother in the world. Not only did he install a shiny new radio in my car (complete with the ability to play .mp3's via an SD drive), he also organised (and set up) a new modem / router as our old one died at some point last night. Legend!

Soft Web

Sometimes 'soft and gentle' is the best option.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding an alternative to Trello which gives me a lot more control over what my students can and can't do on our shared board. Suffice it to say yesterday's triumph using Trello turned to disaster when one of my students sabotaged our 'Help Board' and removed all the other students. It turns out that Trello is too trusting and users can easily change their 'display name' making it impossible to figure out who the troll is. Needless to say, this was a lesson learned the hard, painful and time consuming way.

Sharp Dunes

This one is definitely 'edgy'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Using a trello board as a way for students to request help in class. This was an experiment that worked much better than expected.

Disc Adventure

As in an image made up of lots of small discs.

Today's Gratitude Item: Many of my students are working extremely hard. I know this because they are getting the hang of emailing after hours for help (which is a great thing).

All Roads

The spikes in this one could be roads - and they are all pointing to the same place.

Today's Gratitude Item: Positive feedback from one of the student teachers who observed some of my classes today. I encouraged the visiting student teachers to chat with my students, ask them about the work we are doing and watch how my kids access the work / do the learning. The feedback I got was that when asked all but one of my students said they were planning on continuing with Computer Science next year. The one who was not a definite 'yes' was in the 'wait and see how I go' category. This is not something I had discussed with my students or even thought to ask them and knowing that right now things are going well for most in the class is great news.

Odd Sculpture

Was not too sure about this one - it was *just* interesting enough to keep.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a reasonably early night for the second time in as many days. Sadly this does not make getting out of bed in the morning when it is still dark any easier.

Stain Proof

If the fabric is made up of a large number of dots, stains are easily masked.

Today's Gratitude Item: A surprisingly calm and quiet day at school because quite a few of our students were either late or completely missing, due to this morning's traffic snarl-up (which doubled my commute time and was not fun at all).

Arch Reef

Reminded me a bit of a coral reef.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my marking did not take as long as feared. Encouraging students to upload 'proof of life' images which show their work thus far is an easy way to be reasonably certain that they are on track without having to spend ages checking their work.

Thorn Arch

As in an arch made up of thorns.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally finding a web based colour picker which allows users to enter an html code and then generate more shades based on that colour. I suspect my students will find this tool helpful as they learn to create websites.

Silver Spiral

Complete with metallic thorns.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting to the end of a long week. Whilst we've only been back at school for seven school days - it feels like we've been back for months!

Wedge Work

Perhaps this one should have been called 'unexpected forest'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally having enough computers for everyone in my very large 10th grade Computer Science Class. Our Tech guy was amazing and he made the *almost* impossible a reality.

Ring to Rule

Named for the gold ring.

Today's Gratitude Item: More space in my classroom! I had some extra cupboards which were not needed but were taking up room. These have finally been re-homed giving me more desk space, more floor space and perhaps most importantly, more wall space. My classroom feels quite a bit bigger and I'm looking forward to doing a bit of decorating (ie: putting stuff on the walls).

Flag Fun

These reminded me of pennants and it was fun to create - so naming this one was easy.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting all of my seventh graders onto our school’s system. These students come from a local middle school and getting everyone set up has been a minor mission. It’s a relief to get it all 'sorted'.

Golden Lotus

I tried a range of colours and was hoping for a green / silver white combination but it turned out that this time around, copper / gold was the best option.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding that perfect Public Domain image on Pixabay. It was exactly what I needed for a quick project :)

Light Opera

This one reminded me of the Sydney Opera house (assuming they decided to have an extravagant lights show).

Today's Gratitude Item: Being *mostly* ready for school this week :)

Butterfly Convention

This is what happens when you put wings on geometry.

Today's Gratitude Item: Cheap CD's. A while ago my favourite radio station switched to a different frequency and listening to it in my car is no longer possible. Happily the local second hand store had a vast selection of CD's which were half price. I snagged five CD's for a grand total of $3.50 and now I'm looking forward to driving to school on Monday.

Plant Power

I was not sure if these were flowers or alien space craft.

Today's Gratitude Item: Most of my 9th grade class can now log-in to our lab computers. There was a slight (but significant) technical hitch yesterday that meant half of the class could not log-in which made life really difficult. Some days it feels like 'three steps forward, two steps back'.

Fairy (with wings)

I tried to make the colouring more angelic but it would not work...

Today's Gratitude Item: Reading "The Bookshop of the Broken Hearted". I borrowed this one from the local library and it is one of the best books I have read this summer.

Wednesday, February 06, 2019

Button Bonanza

It turns out that teal is one of my favourite colours.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding a shortcut for invoking the oft used 'snipping' tool. All one needs to do is press Win+Shift+S and then grab the part of the screen that one wants to capture.

Tuesday, February 05, 2019

Candle Cones

These are candles - not Christmas trees. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally figuring out how to block trolls on YouTube. Routinely deleting the unkind comments took both time and energy that could be better spent elsewhere. Happily the instructions for blocking someone on YouTube from way back in 2014 still worked.

Sound Ripple

I wasn't expecting this one to turn out as well as it did.

Today's Gratitude Item: The gate at school was closed but the system recoginsed my car and it opened for me. This is the first time that this has happened as last year this 'feature' never worked for me and, on the rare occasion that the gate was locked, I’d have to get out of my car, remember my access code, put it into the keypad and hope that the gate opened. That process also involved a mad dash back to the car to be able to get in before the gate rolled closed.

Ribbon Roll

Quite a bit of post-processing was involved. This is the fractal version of tumble weed.

Today's Gratitude Item: Discovering that I don't have to use 'remove access' to use the school database from home. Needless to say this is recent development which is super convenient :)

Shiny Ribbon

With a cheeky hole in the middle.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my sprained *left* wrist is on the mend. It got injured yesterday but the good news is that my right hand was unaffected and after a day of complete rest, I can type without any pain :)

Egg Fan

The shapes in the middle of this one reminded me of Easter Eggs. Hence the name.

Today's Gratitude Item: Our air conditioning worked for most of the day and it was lovely being able to work in a cool space. Said air-con failed towards the end of the day but our 'property' team are on the case and hopefully it will be permanently fixed in the near future :)
