Rosh HaShana 5780

Shana Tova Everyone!

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: A delightful Sunday, made all that much better by the fact that it is Erev Yom Tov.

Spin Geometry

This one turned out much better than expected.

Today's Gratitude Item: Daylight saving is back. Even better, I am on holiday which means that dark early mornings won't be a problem for the next short while.

Digital Turtle

The turtle did not appear until I reflected the image in GIMP. It was a very nice surprise.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally making it to the end of a hectic term. Am not sure who was happier to be on holiday, the teachers or the kids.

Very Compact Disc

Discs are a bit of a common theme but, as is so often the case, this one was nice enough to be worth keeping.

Today's Gratitude Item: That it's extremely easy to create keyboard shortcuts in GIMP. This can take a lot of the pain out of repetitive tasks.

Feather Fan

As in I like feathers. A lot. You could say that I'm a bit of a fan.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having an umbrella when I really needed one! Today the weather was crazy - being outside during an admittedly brief hailstorm was an unwelcome experience (which is where that umbrella became invaluable).

Spun Potholes

Take some potholes, colour them purple and then spin them around.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being surprised at how amazing the guys over at Rokdim are. If you are looking for Israeli dance music, you can download it there AND they throw in the teaching video for free. They are fantastic at responding to feedback too.

Gloomy Sun

This one is a lot less depressing than anticipated.

Today's Gratitude Item: That our 'Common Assessment Task' went well and there were not issues. Having this out of the way is a great feeling (trust me when I say this is a fairly big deal for our students).

Brick Lace

As in a wall made out of textured, lacy bricks.

Today's Gratitude Item: A 'different' day which involved a rather interesting workshop aimed at folk dance teachers. It was nice to see how others approach the task of teaching new dances to a group.

Ornate String

It took a surprisingly long time to get this one looking 'just right'.

Today's Gratitude Item: A really peaceful day in which I did not feel overwhelmed by work related issues.

Friday, September 20, 2019

This is what happens when you merge a zigzag and a squiggle.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a reasonable amount done today. Having a 'to do' list and tackling it one annoying thing at a time helped.

Weird Square Hole

It turns out that sometimes holes can be square!

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally finding a desktop ePub reader that displays embedded videos. We currently use Edge to do this but MS have announced that when Edge is phased out / replaced by Chromium, the ePub functionality will no longer exist which is a great pity. It is amazing how many desktop ePub readers don't correctly render embedded video. In this case, 'simple' works but I will need to edit my ePubs slightly so that the video pages appear in the correct place. At least I have time...

Moth Wings

The design on the diagonal reminded me of a line of moths.

Today's Gratitude Item: That today's Internet outage at school was mercifully brief. It is scary how dependent my classes are on being connected. No internet / intranet means things pretty much grind to a halt which is not good.

Out of Kilter

This one is a bit wonky - in a good way.

Today's Gratitude Item: An early night! With slightly less going on this could be a great opportunity to catch up on some much needed sleep.

Spun Out Spiral

Duplicating, rotating and tiling were the order of the day. They took something that was 'ordinary' and improved it quite a bit.

Today's Gratitude Item: Not having to follow up on student attendance for the next week and a half. This saves me between 15 and 20 minutes each day and it's nice to get a break from this particular chore. So far, I'm loving our school exams. Especially as for my subject, our students have a Common Assessment task which means that I don't have to do loads of marking :)

Spiral Hill

As in a hill with a spiral center.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being refreshed and *mostly* ready for the week ahead.

Saturday, September 14, 2019

Sea Doorway

This one is OK but it's not quite as good as hoped.

Today's Gratitude Item: Saturdays! The not having to get up early and go in to work routine never gets old :)

Friday, September 13, 2019

Ocean Net

It turns out that woven waves are now a thing.

Today's Gratitude Item: School exams are next week. The good thing about this is a slightly lighter teaching load and a bit less stress. The plan sit do as much catching up on 'stuff' as possible

Almost Flower

As in a cross between a flower and woven spiral.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a contract (in writing) for next year. Knowing that I don't need to shift schools is nice. It's a bit of a pity that said contract is for a year only rather than being for a permanent position ...

Peaking Purple Waves

The name pretty much says it all. Some very careful manual tiling was needed for this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: Minimal traffic this evening when going to (and from) dance class. Auckland traffic can be an interesting gamble. Happily this evening the odds were in my favour :)

Tuesday, September 10, 2019

It's not quite the right shape for a grenade but the pattern was close enough for it to earn the name.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my experiment using google's Colab worked even better than expected. My students found it easy to use and I found it easy to mark their work and give them feedback. Even better, despite the limited formatting options, there is a way to make text look exactly as intended, provided one is comfortable with html and css. So it's all good :)

Curtain Waves

This one was remarkably easy to create. It's good when that happens.

Today's Gratitude Item: Google have put out some new 'toys' / improvements for use with Google Classroom. So far, so good. They are doing some interesting things with something called 'Code Lab' which might be an easy way to allow my students to create and submit code within the google classroom environment (which makes it easy for me to see that they are on-track and give them feedback).

Blue Motion

I like this one. You could say I'm a fan :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally cleaning out the cupboard next to the computer in my home-office. Getting things a bit more organised felt really good.

Modern Arch

Am not too sure how exactly this happened, but am glad that it did.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a new headset (similar to the one that died) for $65 instead of $99. A brother who knows exactly what he is doing and retailers who are willing to price-match is a wonderful thing.

Friday, September 06, 2019

Sometimes tiling fractals can give pleasing results. This was on of those times.

Today's Gratitude Item: That finding the blue tooth settings on my laptop is very easy. I *might* be getting some blue tooth headphone as my 'current' wireless headphones died quite suddenly and need to be replaced.

Thursday, September 05, 2019

Box Stairs

Some 'flipping' and tiling was involved in this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a fair bit of 'box ticking' done today. It is a great pity that the government and at times our own senior leaders insist that staff complete tasks that are essentially busy work. Having to do 'admin' type stuff which is not looked at /used by anyone and does not benefit our students is one of the less fun things about being a teacher.

Wednesday, September 04, 2019

Very Modern Ripple

Am not too sure about this one - I'd hoped it would somehow be nicer than it turned out.

Today's Gratitude Item: One of my dancers who has been overseas for quite a while has finally made it back home. It was lovely to have her back with us in the circle.

Tuesday, September 03, 2019

Industrial Fan

This fan is environmentally friendly. It must be as it is 'green'!

Today's Gratitude Item: That most of the things that were broken yesterday in my Computer lab have been fixed - so today was a lot better than yesterday!

Monday, September 02, 2019

Ups and Downs

It took ages to get this one to look right but it was worth the effort.

Today's Gratitude Item: Spring is here! Got to walk outside after school for the first time this season. It was almost dark by the time I got home but said walk was a wonderful time-out opportunity after a day which was plagued by a whole lot of small, frustrating problems.

String Spin

In this case, post processing helped. A lot.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being *sort of* up-to-date on my marking which is a lot better than being hopelessly behind. The thing with marking is that it is relentless (a bit like dirty dishes but without the joy of having had a great meal before said dishes need to be washed).
