Unparalleled

The edges of the shapes are straight - or are they? Start at this one long enough and it will mess with your head.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a brief break in the madness that is also known as 'back to school'. The last three days have felt like a month with too much going on (and too much that still needs to get done).

Stained Light

Like stained glass, only with light.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally finishing a video series for my senior program class! The next step is to package said videos into an ePub all ready to go for the start of class. It's a huge relief to have gotten this far and I can't wait to finally get this project out of the way.

Illusion Jars

Another image where things that appear to be curved might actually be straight.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting back to dance. The first session of the year went better than expected. After not dancing for seven weeks, was a bit worried but it turns out that muscle memory is a wonderful thing.

Irish OK

It's green and close enough to a shamrock to be worth rendering.

Today's Gratitude Item: Completing a really large program and finishing my Purim image which will appear on this blog in due course.

Ice Tower

This one looked a lot more 'icy' before it got post processed.

Today's Gratitude Item: Spending most of the day making video tutorials! It's staring to feel as if the end is in sight for my current project (fingers crossed).

Clam Shell

Clams are not usually green but now seemed like a good time to make an exception.

Today's Gratitude Item: Slowly disengaging my blog from flickr. At the moment, most of the images are hosted there BUT I've lost confidence in their service and have shifted my 'stuff' to Google Photos which is perfect for my needs and has the added advantage of being free. It also plays nicely with blogger which means updating things just got a whole lot faster. The only downside is that it will take a while to change the links to my images from flickr to Google Photos. This has become a necessity as once my flickr subscription runs out, they will only host 1,000 of my images (which sounds like a lot but isn't).

Readme

This blog has been around for a while - here are some things that will make getting around it & accessing content easier for everyone

  • There are a large number of images on this blog, most of them are available in large versions. To access these please right click on the image concerned and choose to either save the image or view it (possibly in a new tab).
  • For *most* Jewish holidays, I post a suitably themed image. These can all be accessed via this folder. They have been designed to be used by the wider community and are available in very large sizes for printing. If you'd like to be informed when new images are available, please get in touch with me directly.

  • Back in October 2012, after discovering some of my work being used without my permission for commercial purposes, I posted some ground rules. If this is your first time reading this blog and you'd like to use some of the content, please take the time to read that post (it's short, to the point, and vaguely humourous).

  • From time to time users get in touch asking me to link to their websites / blogs. Things got quite bad at one point prompting the creation of a Comment and Content policy for this blog. Again, a short, vaguely humorous read - although if you've taken the time to read this far into the 'readme', it probably does not apply to you (aka preaching to the choir).

Ice Arches

As in ice with arches inside.

Today's Gratitude Item: Great timing! Today was one of those days where everything that could go well, did :)

Green Joy

If you look at this one the right way, it looks like a weird green smiley face -hence the name.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a steering wheel cover for my car. Driving just became a lot more comfortable.

Diamond Squared

Playing with squares can be fun.

Today's Gratitude Item: Learning how to make the most of Google Photos. It's been an interesting journey and a potential solution to a frustrating problem.

Extremem Patchwork Flower

The 'black background' version of this was surprisingly ugly. Happily, the light version was a 'keeper'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a fairly critical part of a program I was developing to work correctly. It's good when that happens.

Grid Game

It's not quite noughts and crosses but it is sort of close.

Today's Gratitude Item: Discovering that it is possible to make custom bookshelves over at GoodReads. I can now easily keep track of which books I've read and which were so bad that they fell into the 'did not finish' category.

Window Squares

Perhaps I should have called this one 'ice play'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding a perfect tutorial for outputting data to a text file using Python. It turns out that the mechanics are very straight forward. Weirdly doing this counts as a 'complex' technique when teaching High School programming.

Loony Tassel

Named because the background reminded me of the 'Looney Tunes' ripple background.

Today's Gratitude Item: Simon's Cat videos. If you're ever feeling slightly down, try watching one of these. They tend to make me laugh out loud.

Saturday, January 18, 2020

O'Twist

An 'interesting' surprise with colours that worked.

Today's Gratitude Item: The latest Jack Reacher novel. I read Blue Moon today and whilst it received mixed reviews over at Good Reads, I loved it. Best of all, sourced it through the local library and did not have to wait too long for it to arrive.

Old Brass Column

If you leave copper / brass long enough, it will eventually turn green.

Today's Gratitude Item: Things are going smoothly - even if progress is slower than I'd like. It's great when programs work as intended without too much pain.

Thursday, January 16, 2020

Lift Shaft

As in a bird's eye view of a lift shaft.

Today's Gratitude Item: A great day where lots got done. This includes creating a series of fractals, an image for Pesach and a couple of videos to teach my senior students how to program in Python. The programming videos are an on-going project but hopefully now what I've made a decent start, the pace can be maintained...

Wednesday, January 15, 2020

Teal Target

Another fun surprise.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to recycle (and improve) old code for a newish project.

Tuesday, January 14, 2020

Copper Chip

The small copper bits in this one reminded me of computer chips - even though this looks nothing like a real chip.

Today's Gratitude Item: Figuring out how to make the 'close' cross at the top of a dialogue box behave in a certain way when programming in Python (using Tkinter). It took several hours, a lot of searching and a fair bit of trial and error but things now work correctly.

Monday, January 13, 2020

String Star

With an ominous black hole in the center.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to check my student's results slightly earlier than anticipated. As usual things were not as bad as feared but not quite as good as hoped with some results leaving me scratching my head (nothing new here). Getting results is always quite stressful and knowing that most of my kids are OK was quite a relief.

Tinsel Ribbon

This one is purely decorative.

Today's Gratitude Item: The fig tree outside has a lot more baby figs than expected. I'm not holding out much hope that said figs will be fit for human consumption but for some reason I get a lot of pleasure from watching them grow. In previous years we've left them for the birds who seem OK with the non-existent taste.

Ribbon Beads

It would be cool if these existed in real life...

Today's Gratitude Item: Doing some paper based puzzles after quite a long break. Completing said puzzles was oddly satisfying.

Friday, January 10, 2020

Stalk Weave

As in it looks like a woven stalk.

Today's Gratitude Item: Deciding to stop working early today and take a decent break. Sometimes time off is a necessity rather than a luxury.

Thursday, January 09, 2020

Shiny Spindle

The 3D effect was rather unexpected.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting some creative inspiration. Am happily working away on my next project (which should take about four days to complete, finger's crossed).

Wednesday, January 08, 2020

Shine Twist

Play for long enough and this is what happens.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally completing an ePub that can be used to teacher my senior students how to create a php / sql database that includes linked tables.

Tuesday, January 07, 2020

Open Eyes

As in a row of open eyes which is not as creepy as one might think.

Today's Gratitude Item: Fixing up quite a large issue with my current project. It took a lot longer than hoped but there is finally light at the end of this tunnel. I'm really, really hoping that said light is not an on-coming train.

Monday, January 06, 2020

Ocean Ripple

In this case the small version looks nicer than the large version...

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding my lost bookmark. It was in the last place I looked.

Sunday, January 05, 2020

Intense Fire Star

This was one of those 'what was I thinking' moments.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a lovely new pair of trousers that are both smart and extremely comfortable. Clothes shopping is probably my least favourite thing but at least this time around the mission was successful.

Saturday, January 04, 2020

Crazy Waves

Which turned out surprisingly well.

Today's Gratitude Item: Tailor's chalk. Nothing else we tried was any good at marking black fabric :)

Friday, January 03, 2020

Christmas Disc Weave

Named because it was created on Christmas Eve.

Today's Gratitude Item: For once, things went quite smoothly when making video tutorials. I think the nap I had before starting was part of the reason for this (coding when one is really tired is a very, very bad idea).

Thursday, January 02, 2020

Woven Moonrise

Sometimes subtle colours are a great option. This was one of those times.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting back into the groove of making resources. It always takes longer than one thinks...

Which Direction?

If you look at this one closely, you can see the arrows.

Which Direction?

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting help with an SQL problem that I was having. It's great to be able to call on an expert when this sort of thing happens. In this case Google was no help at all and an actual human was needed to provide the solution.
