Infinite Autumn

If you look closely, you can see the infinity symbol. The colours reminded me or autumn, green turning to gold and so on.

Today's Gratitude Item: Saving the keywords that I used for my last SS "photo". The photo was rejected but its easy enough to fix and resubmit. Usually the "painful" bit is typing in / trying to remember keywords. Now all I have to do is copy and paste.

Metal Men

Made in Blender. These guys look like they are ready for action!

Today's Gratitude Item: Time to think. Watching kids write exams can be rather boring. It can also be a great time to simply think and solve problems / come up with ideas for graphics.

Irish Gold

Both the square and spherical elements were made in Apo, they are the same except for the size they were rendered at and the final transform that was applied.

A fair bit of "post work" was done after rendering in PSP.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding $1.40 on my walk today! This is something of a personal record and the experience was rather surreal. Found a 20c coin on the way down to the ferry, then spotted a coin in the road on the way back which turned out to be a dollar (freaky) and finally found another 20c coin on the ground by the bus stop about 1km from home. Maybe people were just rather clumsy / absent minded today. It could be something in the water.*

*Over here in NZ, the smallest coin is a 10c piece, followed by 20c coins, so finding 10c or even 20c is not as impressive as it sounds. We "ditched" our 5c coins in the middle of last year.

Coloured Pencils

Made in blender. I love stationery, especially the smell of new pencils. The best thing about these guys is that they won't ever get blunt or used up.

Today's Gratitude Item: Algebra! Not only do I enjoy doing it, but many people find it hard, so they pay me to help them. Sad but true.

Soft Geometry

Need something soothing? Try this on for size. Was going for the "you are feeling sleepy" / hypnotic effect.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the Benoit Mandelbrot competition is happening again this year. Last year, two of my three entries made it into "further consideration" (although none of them made it to the exhibition). The contest is a good thing because its an opportunity to "show off" and see the best of other people's work as well. The hard part is figuring out which three fractals to submit. The closing date is 30th June, so I'm open to suggestions.

No Eating / No Ice Cream Sign

Still learning Blender and still having fun with it. Am of course hoping that this will sell on Shutterstock

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting new walking / dancing shoes. My "old" ones were getting too worn so two new pairs of shoes got purchased. One pair for indoors on the treadmill and one for outdoors / dance class. Both pairs are blue (but different shades / styles) and I can't wait to wear them.

Optical Echo

I'm thinking this would make a cool desktop wallpaper. The colours "work" and it looks quite good in large size.

The name just popped into my head when I saw the fractal. Weird huh?

Today's Gratitude Item: That the weekend is finally here!! Its been one of those really long weeks and I'm ready for a break.

This one reminded me of my grandfather. When he "retired" he took up growing orchids. He was really passionate and his "babies" used to win awards. Whenever I see an orchid, it reminds me of him.

Today's Gratitude Item: Blog stats. Its great to be able to see who is visiting this blog, how long they stay for and where they come from. I've been tossing up whether to use my stats as a real life example of a time series for my senior stats classes. Will have to see how things go.

Broken Heart

Despite the graphic, I am actually in love - with Blender. Its great to be able to make 3D logos / signs without too much effort.

Today's Gratitude Item: The funny things that sometimes happen at school where you just have to laugh. Like when the lock to the classroom has been jammed and your colleague gets one of the more athletic students to climb in through the window and open the door from the other side.

Shavuot 5767

Presenting another magazine cover. This is a sequel to last year's effort and moves on from my Pesach graphic.

If you want to find out more about Shavuot please take a look at the preceding link.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Having some time to get organised for the coming weeks. There's a lot happening at school and being able to sit in "my" office an do some planning was really helpful.

Barbie's Jeep

There's a song about this one. Its called "girls just want to have fun"!

And yes, that is a rocket launcher at the back.

Today's Gratitude Item: JBz Chocolate Candies. These are really, really great. My parents brought some home from the States and I'm sitting here wishing that we could buy them locally in NZ.

Ice Explosion

Similar to (but no the same as) "Wheel of Fire". Once again, available in large size for use as wallpaper on a desktop :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Not having to go out at all today. Spent the entire day on my own inside. It was paradise :)

Blue Sand (also available in Orange)

Made in apo with one of my favourite gradients. Its designed for use as desktop wallpaper so go ahead and download the large version if you want to.

And here is the orange version.

Today's Gratitude Item: Feeling better. Its ironic how one does not appreciate good health until it is gone.

Turkish Delight

The rose coloured bit reminds me of Turkish Delight. Hence the name.

Today's Gratitude Item: A plentiful supply of tissues! Having the "sniffles" is cramping my style at the moment.

Silver / Gold Goblets

Below are some of my early blender efforts. The goblets come in two versions.

Today's Gratitude Item: Old phone books. Who knew they could be used as part of an exercise on random sampling? The look on the kid's faces when I literally "let rip" was classic. They each needed a page to practice the various methods of random sampling needed for their statistics class. At least someone had fun at school today :)

Wednesday, May 16, 2007

This blog is three years old today! The graphic below was especially designed for the occasion. Its all done by hand except for the digital signature at the bottom.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having time to eat / prepare dinner today. Usually on a Wednesday am pretty rushed but one of my students changed their tutoring day meaning that things are not quite so hectic.

Wheel of Fire

Bad Tiling Script + Mystery Final Transform = Hot Stuff. This one was designed as a desktop wallpaper, so if you want it, feel free to grab the large size version.

Today's Gratitude Item: Maintenance guys who fix stuff before you even report the problem! At work, I needed to take care of a small thing and mentioned it to a colleague. It was on my list of stuff to do and one of the maintenance staff found me to solve the problem before I even asked. Its great when stuff like that happens.

Copper Coin

Its been a while since I played with the "blur" variation to get a "plastic" looking flame.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being back teaching Maths! Its so much easier than French / English /Humanities (long story).

Rings of Fire

For some reason, this one reminded me of an erupting volcano - except this is not quite as destructive.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding 40c (two 20c coins) on my walk today. Said coins were quite far away from each other, but its still a buzz to pick up other people's dropped small change. That would be one of the major advantages of walking outside as opposed to on the treadmill :)

Hug ?

This cute little gingerbread man wants a hug! Made in blender (the program, rather than the kitchen appliance).

Today's Gratitude Item: Not getting too wet whilst mowing the lawn! It was a typical Auckland day today, one minute brilliant sunshine, the next, rain. Which explains why I ended up mowing the lawn in the *light* rain. Good news is that I got the petrol mower started with relative ease. Bad news is that I had just started doing the job when the rain began. Given that starting the lawn mower is my least favourite thing, once started, I was not going to quit until the job was done. Happily, the rain was not too hard and did not last too long. The sun was out before the lawn was fully mowed.

Burning Ash

It helps when the "random gradient" generator co-operates. Have decided to stop framing most of my fractal backgrounds so that they can easily be used as desktop wallpaper. Click on the image below to access the large version

Today's Gratitude Item: Waking up half an hour early today and not being tired! This meant being able to check my email before going to school :)

Bathroom Tile

A boring name for a rather cool fractal. Thing is, it looks like a piece of mosaic tile that would look good in a modern bathroom. Maybe.

Today's Gratitude Item: That you can't see how badly the lawn needs mowing because it is covered with leaves! I wish I was kidding but I'm not. Will get on to it over the weekend.

Gold and Silver Dice

Made using blender. Being able to make gold and silver stuff is really cool. It's a pity they aren't real.

Dice in blender are rather clichéd as they are one of the first things newbies learn to make. I have made 75c so far on Shutterstock with these babies so am rather "stoked".

Today's Gratitude Item: Role reversal. All too often, I feel like climbing the walls with frustration. Today, I got to literally watch kids climb up a wall in outdoor ed. It was fun. Especially when they had races!

Tuesday, May 08, 2007

Its classic, just like good poetry.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the great Damian Jones took the time to comment on a piece that I wrote for Orbit Trap. Damian is something of a legend when it come to fractals. He's also a great guy. The post was about the value of digitally framing fractals and it is the first time that one of my pieces has had that kind of response.

Painted Silk

Digital art that *almost* sings. In "real" life, I can neither paint, nor sing.

Today's Gratitude Item: Tinned Spaghetti in sauce, "nuked" with cheese - the gratitude part being the bit where no sauce ended up on my clothes or on the table cloth!

Sunday, May 06, 2007

Braided Ball

Made from scratch in Apo. Took a while to create and render. The aim was to get more complexity into the creation without making it too "messy".

Today's Gratitude Item: "Used" envelopes. They are great for scribbling down ideas, shopping lists and quick sketches.

Bevrijdingsday 2007

May the 5th is Netherlands Liberation Day. This flag celebrates the event, and was inspired by a great friend who comes from Holland!

Today's Gratitude Item: A delightfully uneventful day. After a rather busy week, it was nice not to be busy for a bit.

Friday, May 04, 2007

Zion Lion

This one started out as a response to a request. Turns out that it was not exactly what was wanted - but I like it anyway.

Today's Gratitude Item: Someone else raked "my" leaves! Meaning I don't have to do it - which is an occasion for both guilt and gratitude.

Thursday, May 03, 2007

Mustard Gas

Ironically, we looked at Wilfred Owen's "Dulce Et .." poem on the day this was created. Wonder if the gas looked anything like this. Probably not.

Today's Gratitude Item: Anti Cyclones. This means nice clear weather for tomorrow and the weekend ahead. Am just hoping that the weather guys have got it right.

Wednesday, May 02, 2007

Shell Magnets

Named because the circular parts toward the outside could be shells and the lines around the orange "bars" reminded me of magnetic force fields (think magnet + paper + iron filings + Science Class).

Today's Gratitude Item: Rebus Puzzles. I got to share some of these with my students today and we all enjoyed the experience. It was really great seeing the looks on their faces when they "got it".

Tuesday, May 01, 2007

White Iris

This one was made rather quickly to illustrate something for a friend. When I rendered it (on a black background), it was quite grainy. Being too lazy to clean it up (the hard way), I simply make a negative image of it and that made the grain around the edges much less obvious. I think thats cheating, but it worked.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a phone call that I was waiting for. The call came in much later than expected and I was beginning to "freak out". Everything is fine now (thankfully).
