Swan Feathers

It took forever to find a suitable gradient for this one! The swan seems to like the final choice - although with swans, it can be hard to tell exactly what they are feeling.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting to $199.00 this month on Shutterstock. Its not my "best month ever" but considering the traditional post Christmas lull in sales, its not bad. The big question is if it will reach $200.00 before 2009 officially arrives in the States (where the SS servers are located).

Edit: I made it!! That's a good end to the year. Here's hoping that 2009 will be even better.

Kosher Chicken

You can tell that this chicken is kosher because of the ornate Star of David to the left. If you can't see the star, try squinting.

Today's Gratitude Item: Discovering a new variation / plugin for Apo. Images generated with this nice little toy will feature here in due course.

Pastel Control

The control tower is based on the "real thing" over at Auckland airport. The rest of the image is pure fantasy.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting some new T-Shirts and summer tops :) Bring on summer!

Last Night

Tonight is the last night of Channukah, which means 9 candles burning :)

Today's Gratitude Item:Being over halfway on the blanket that I'm making. Its a massive project and reaching this milestone is rather encouraging.

Suntile Floor

Out in the desert, strange sites abound. Especially when it gets really hot.

Today's Gratitude Item: That it was not too hot today! Yesterday it was "beautiful" which translates as very sunny / hot. I prefer overcast - especially when going for a walk. Today was perfect.

Friday, December 26, 2008

Sand Circles

Dedicated to all those who at some point read Circles in a forest (Kringe in 'n bos). You get bonus points if you read the Afrikaans version.

Today's Gratitude Item: That hiccups are only a temporary affliction. Inconvenient, surprisingly annoying but very temporary.

Which One?

This ostrich is wondering which egg / eggs belong to it. The joys of being a "bird brain" :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Having a good "stock" of reference photos (from earlier this month) and the time to make them into illustrations.

Merry Christmas :)

This is to all of you out there who wished me "Merry Christmas" with a smile on your lovely faces. It would take too long to explain that I'm Jewish and don't celebrate (this is New Zealand where things like Judaism are foreign to the majority). Thus Seasons Greetings are taken in the spirit they were offered and returned with a smile.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the Christmas craziness will be over soon. I probably say this every year - but this time of year tends to bring out the insanity in people. Thank G-d I'm Jewish and feel no inclination to "celebrate".

School Stuff

Inspired by the school where I worked this past year :) Its an amazing place. This piece recycles my "Air New Zealand" cabin bag (the one which did not win). Recycling can be good.

Today's Gratitude Item: Its raining :) This means probably not having to get up insanely early tomorrow morning to go for a walk. I'm looking very forward to "sleeping in".

Chanukah Sameach 5769 - Happy Meal

This one is a unique take on a "happy meal". It's appropriate though, especially when one realises that Channukah is a time for celebration.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: A good day :) I'm really enjoying being on holiday, especially as it is just the start of the break and several weeks of "freedom" lie ahead. Being at the start of a vacation is a great feeling.

First Night - 5769

Chanukah Sameach Everyone! My "official" Chanukah image will be featured here tomorrow night.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding reasonably priced wool that is the perfect colour for the project I'm working on. Its a long story, this is the short version.

Hold Me Baby

I like how the sculpture echos the curves in the fractals. This one turned out better than expected.

Hold Me Baby

The wallpaper version can be downloaded at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: The waiting to see if I won the Air New Zealand Cabin bag competition is over - that's the good news. The bad news is that my bag did not "make it". Never mind. I can still be incredibly grateful to everyone who voted for my entry and helped me make it into the top ten. Thanks guys! In the meantime, I have recycled the image and it will hopefully feature as an artwork in the new "Middle School Learning Center" at school. That image will be posted here in due course

Giraffe Gold

Giraffe are my all-time favourite animal. I feel a series coming on. This fellow will be the star. He's based on reference photos taken on a school trip to Auckland Zoo (sometimes being a teacher can be really cool - we get pretty unusual perks).

Giraffe Gold

The wallpaper version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Apophysis tutorials on the Internet. Sometimes its good to try new things and using Internet tutorials is a great way to create fractals of a "different" style. Said fractals will feature here in due course.

Thursday, December 18, 2008

Fantastic Floor

This one would look more interesting if I could make it properly 3D. Never mind. Its not too bad.

Fantastic Floor

The wallpaper version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Making headway on a new client's site. So far the site is looking good. All I need now is for the client to send through the promised copy.

Christmas Connection

Its about the family connection, more than the decorations. This image is not that "Christmassy", but then, I don't really "do" Christmas (its the whole Jewish thing).

Christmas Connection

The wallpaper version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being shortlisted for that Cabin bag competition that I blogged about last month. There are a total of 10 finalists and the competition website says that the winner will be announced there on Saturday. Gotta love agonising waits. My parents are convinced that my entry will win. I wish I had their confidence.

Prohibited Pet

Monkeys don't make good pets! There are many reasons that they should be housed in zoos / nature sanctuaries. Trust me on this one.

Prohibited Pet

The wallpaper version is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting a music track that I've been wanting to put onto the "dance" ipod! Its a small thing, but its great to have finally gotten hold of this lovely bit of music.

Monday, December 15, 2008

No Dogs Allowed

Unless they don't understand signs :) Dedicated to all those dog lovers out there.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding dad's hamburger recipe. Not only can my dad cook, but his food is the best. We don't often let him loose in the kitchen, but when we do, we take notes!

Sunday, December 14, 2008

Folded Gold

Its quite hard to talk on the phone with all that interference!

Today's Gratitude Item: Today was our local Santa Parade and I went and photographed the whole thing. It was a good opportunity to get photos of people / vintage cars which can then be changed into vector silhouettes. Said parade was free too - which is always good.

Saturday, December 13, 2008

Flower in the Sky

The title really says it all. It was difficult to choose the gradient for this flame, which explains the lack of colour.

Today's Gratitude Item: A really lovely dance party. Our Israeli dance group combined forces with LMA (Leisure Movement Association) and we had a great time.

Friday, December 12, 2008

Dedicated to one of my dance buddies who at some point in the near future will give birth to a baby boy!

The design reminded me of a Mexican hat for some reason.

Today's Gratitude Item: I'm officially on summer vacation!!! Its a great feeling.

Limitless Lime

I'm not sure this riding this path is a good idea. It appears to go on for ever!

Today's Gratitude Item: A record day over at Shutterstock. It looks like fractal guy (ie: the person who downloads around 30 of my fractals when he visits) is back :). I also got another enhanced sale. The daily record now stands at $44.26.

Wednesday, December 10, 2008

Blue Bike Spiral

I'm having a "surreal is good" day. This is not exactly breaking news. A break from Apophysis / Tierazon was called for, so I revisited "Mind Boggling Fractals". It was fun.

Today's Gratitude Item: One of my tutor group students gave me an incredibly thoughtful gift! She even remembered that I'm Jewish and don't celebrate Christmas, so it was a "non-Christmas thank you gift". Its at times like this that teaching is the coolest job ever.

Tuesday, December 09, 2008

Splash Smash

No wonder this guy is taking a second look at what's happening next to him - it looks a tad dangerous.

Today's Gratitude Item: Figuring out how to fix my free version of AVG which was giving a weird error message (got to love google). Also getting another enhanced sale over at SS.

Monday, December 08, 2008

Wooly Wave

This one must be worth photographing!

Today's Gratitude Item: One more class to teach and then I'm "done". We still have various assemblies, prize givings and other events at school but the end is in sight.

Sunday, December 07, 2008

Inside View

This is not the view from inside my living room, but wouldn't it be cool if it was!

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting to see our library volunteer (who recently turned 9) dance in a concert. Her dad also took part in a rather cheeky piece. The actual concert was really professional and it was brilliant to watch.

Rain Walkers

These two look like they went for a walk in the rain - at sunset. This one came out a lot better than expected. Its good when that happens.

Today's Gratitude Item: My dad helped me to get more of my work printed onto canvas. The works will *hopefully* be displayed in our Jewish Community center in due course. I will pick out the frames for the pieces on Monday (its all quite exciting).

Friday, December 05, 2008

Brass Bullets

I feel sort of sorry for the card board cut-out. He must feel rather unloved given that people keep shooting at him for no apparent reason.

Today's Gratitude Item: A great "Community and Service Day". We got to spend some time out of school and a good time was had by all. Not getting sunburned was an added bonus.

Thursday, December 04, 2008

Ladder Man

Its amazing how a fractal background can take something quite ordinary and make it rather interesting.

Today's Gratitude Item: Today has been a really good day. We had our "Celebration of the Year" and as part of the ceremony each tutor group wrote a poem about their tutor and then presented them. My tutor group did a great job and were super nice. I'm especially grateful that they did not embarrass me. I finally plucked up the courage to look up my grade for the Statistics paper I sat last month. Nothing official had come in the snail mail so I visited the University website and discovered that I got an A+.

Wednesday, December 03, 2008

Shadow Boxers

This one reminds me of "smoke and mirrors" - minus the mirrors. Interestingly the white background is a lot more effective than a black background in this case.

Today's Gratitude Item: The southbound off-ramp reasonably near to where we live has finally been reopened. This had been out of action for the better part of a year and it was wonderful to be able to take the motorway home for a change. Things are slightly different and nice and new. Felt weird - but in a good way.

Tuesday, December 02, 2008

Giant Fractal Flower

This one turned out rather well. Its appropriate too as with summer well entrenched the garden is looking really lovely.

Today's Gratitude Item: It looks like I'll have work for next year! My contract at school was only for a year and whilst I did not get the full time Maths position that I interviewed for last week, I have been offered some part time Science work. This is extremely exciting as it means having work to do, but still having time to do my art / computer thing. I could not have envisioned such a perfect outcome and am extremely excited about it. That and teaching Science can be a lot easier than teaching Maths. The students tend to find Science intrinsically interesting - whereas in Mathematics they often struggle with abstract concepts. I'm looking forward to having a year where nobody puts up there hand and asks the "Why are we doing this?" question.

Painted Feathers

When I was growing up, we used to have brightly covered feather dusters made from stained ostrich plumage. Said feather dusters were not quite as pretty as this image, but they did the job.

Today's Gratitude Item: Rain-avoiding short cuts. Also having ones *Christmas* cake and eating it too. There are an amazing group of parents at school who regularly do very kind things for the staff. With Christmas coming, they supplied each staff member with a beautifully wrapped piece of Christmas cake and a lovely note. Even though I don't "do" Christmas, this was an incredibly thoughtful gesture.

Sunday, November 30, 2008

Sometimes creating fractals can be rather relaxing :) Needless to say this is an extremely appropriate image for a Sunday afternoon.

Today's Gratitude Item: Even though I had an extremely rare "zero download day" over at Shutterstock (due to Thanks giving I think), I still made $60 US from my art today. Someone liked my Apophysis work enough that they were willing to pay for the params. I charged $30.00 per param and sold them as a non-exclusive license meaning my client gets to use the files and I can still sell the images generated on SS in due course.

Pop Up

Its amazing the sort of thing that pops up (literally) around the not so humble park bench.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding $4.00 on my walk on Friday afternoon. The money in question was in the form of two $2.00 coins that I spotted on the road. This is a new record for us. I think G-d was laughing because earlier in the day, my dad changed $2.00 of coins into 10c pieces for the wishing well*. He had considered changing $5.00 but the bank did not have the nice shiny coins we like to put down the wishing well. He even joked to my mom that it would not be enough - turns out he was right.

*All the money we find on our walks goes into the wishing well for child cancer. The wishing well is a cool money collecting contraption and watching the coins spiral down into its center is a cheap thrill - especially when its basically found money that it going down there. This week we found a total of $5.40 - which is our record

Two Palms

This one was fun to make. The background is intended for another project but it fitted the palm trees quite nicely - thus another wallpaper is born.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being asked to lead a session on Geogebra for my colleagues at school. I'm looking forward to it. I think our IT trainer was a bit worried that I'd be to technical though - she said to keep it simple. It should be fun though.

Thursday, November 27, 2008

Fire in the Hole

Inspired by a friend of mine who at some point will be training with live grenades so that he can go on peace keeping mission in the not too distant future. Hope he's careful!

Today's Gratitude Item: One more day until the weekend!! This week has seemed longer and more stressful than most and I'm looking forward to having some "down time".

Wednesday, November 26, 2008

Cone Weave

Another in my "couple walking" series.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting some really good reference shots of the various animals at the zoo. Not having to pay to get in was an added bonus.

Tuesday, November 25, 2008

Sunset Stroll

Nothing is nicer than walking with a loved one, just because you can.

Today's Gratitude Item: Fine weather which means my 8th graders went to the beach leaving me free to mark 9th grade exams / write reports. It was an extremely productive day. Also, I had an interview for a job. Mainly I'm glad that its over! Apparently they will make a decision within the next seven days so whilst waiting is not fun, at least the wait will not be prolonged.

Monday, November 24, 2008

Fire Fighters

That is one hot training session!

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting *almost* half way through marking my Y10 exams. The downside is that it has gotten rather late.

Sunday, November 23, 2008

Raging Inferno

This one is so hot, its bound to make the news.

Today's Gratitude Item: Rain :) Its been a while since its rained so having the wet weather return was actually a good thing. I'm hoping that it clears up by Wednesday, otherwise our trip to the zoo may be rather soggy.

Saturday, November 22, 2008

Ice Filmer

Maybe he's filming the polar icecaps as they slowly melt.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my parents have been married for 36 years and are still in love. In today's world this seems to be the exception rather than the norm and I'm lucky to have such special people in my life.

Friday, November 21, 2008

If you use your imagination, the background could be these guys in full flight. Did I mention that a significant amount of imagination might be required?

Today's Gratitude Item: Discovering that I don't see my junior class for their double period next week as they are going to the beach instead. This is a win-win situation :) To be fair, they are a nice lot - the extra time is really a gift as I will have a stack of exams to grade and reports to write.

Thursday, November 20, 2008

Ghost Ship

Made "from scratch" in Apo. The blue fern fronds are doing double duty as waves.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to loan a hat from a colleague. Usually I don't end up with playground duty but I did today. Thus the need for a hat. We are pretty strict about the kids wearing hats when outside and that means duty teachers have to wear them too (its the whole "walk the walk" thing).

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

Perfect Day

This one took a record 7 hours, 54 minutes and 36 seconds to render (in large size). It was worth it though.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being up to date with my reports. It was great not having to teach any classes today due to exams / study leave. It did feel weird though.

Tuesday, November 18, 2008

Flower Child

New meaning for an old concept. Look at the large version and you'll notice there are more flowers in this one that you see at first glance.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being invited for a job interview! Said interview will happen next week and I'm excited about the prospect. The process for finding work for next year has been rather difficult and, with the exception of next week's interview, all my applications have been met with a long silence followed by an eventual "Thanks but no thanks" letter. Thus being given the opportunity to interview is a step in the right direction.

Monday, November 17, 2008

Ball Boy

Perhaps this little guy finds spheres as fascinating as I do.

Today's Gratitude Item: That I was not the only one who forgot about tutor's meeting this morning. Luckily the Dean forgot too. Even better, she emailed to apologise for not being there before I emailed her for the same reason :) I really should make more of an effort to diarise these meetings. The problem is that its so easy to miss them - we have a lot happening at school at the moment.

Sunday, November 16, 2008

Spherical Rain

This rain is certainly out of the ordinary! No wonder the child is fascinated by it.

Today's Gratitude Item: Seeing my Uncle and Cousin from Australia again. It has been a long time since they visited and it was lovely to catch up.

Dreaming of Flying?

Dedicated to all of those who have had "that flying dream".

Today's Gratitude Item: Had a great time at an AMA professional development day. It was the first time I've been to one of these days and the workshops were really interesting - especially the one about Geogebra.

Friday, November 14, 2008

Aim High

Its cliched, but sometimes cliches are a good thing.

Today's Gratitude Item: Google Moon. Its like Google Maps but its for the moon. Used this site with my 8th grade Science students and it was brilliant.

Thursday, November 13, 2008

Decorating Blues

This one started off as Christmas decorations (hence the spheres). It did not turn out as expected.

I really should know better than to try and create things for Christmas. It simply never works for me.

Today's Gratitude Item: The editor over at the Western Leader has confirmed that tomorrow he will print a follow up piece to the article that appeared last week about the YPG Art Awards. This time, I'll be featured! Its just in time too - the contest closes midnight tomorrow so people still have a chance to vote if they have not already done so. Obviously publishing this second article is beyond the call of duty on the part of the Western Leader. Its only possible because we managed to find a link between me and the West Auckland community (I used to teach out there). Right now, I'm tempted to ask them to make me into an honorary Westie. Its a pity my local rag, The North Shore Times Advertiser is not as community spirited as those wonderful guys out West!

Lounging Around

Some days its good just to "lounge around" in a favourite chair reading a book. Sadly, life has been far too busy for this indulgence lately.

Today's Gratitude Item: Discovering that the not so local newspaper I complained about yesterday for not featuring my work in their article on the Yellow Pages Art Awards acted appropriately. Turns out that the issue is with my local newspaper who knew about the competition and failed to publish an article on it. This despite being provided with a large image of my entry and all the relevant information by the competition organisers who encouraged them to cover the event almost a month ago! The frustrating thing is that when I contacted my local newspaper, the senior reporter politely told me that I was too late and implied that I should have let them know sooner - leaving me feeling extremely annoyed with myself for not being more proactive. However, it turns out that they knew about the competition and my entry a long time ago, which means I don't have to beat myself up for being "too late". Sure I still desperately need votes and the situation is still unfair - but at least I know who is responsible. For some strange reason that helps.
