Shana Tova 5769

Shana Tova Everyone! May your New Year be filled with peace, joy and happiness.

On Rosh HaShana its traditional to enjoy honey and apples. This image is a modern twist on that theme and was inspired by my students who are permanently attached to their ipods.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: That little things can be inspiring :) I'm constantly amazed when ideas for images spring forth from unlikely places.

Fish Ripple

Dedicated to all those keen anglers out there :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally learning how to change car tyres. Turns out its not that hard and can be fun. The only thing I struggled with was lifting the new tyre in place, but that's what big strong men are for :)

Riding off ...

... into the sunset. Headed for Paris (of course).

Today's Gratitude Item: My very first ipod!! Its 8GB, metallic blue and absolutely amazing. Said ipod is one of the new ones which means if you shake it, it will shuffle the music automatically. The plan is to put my Israeli dance music on it and then if people can't think of a dance to request we can shake it and let the ipod decide. This is so much fun!

Into the Sun

This plane is flying into the sun, which explains the surreal colour of the clouds.

Today's Gratitude Item: Holidays are here!!! Its been an extremely long term and I'm so happy that I'm finally on holiday. All of my colleagues have lists of stuff to do in the holidays. For most of us, some work is included but not having to actually teach for a while makes a welcome change.

Spy Plane

Ever wonder what "flying under the radar" might look like? Wonder no more :)

Today's Gratitude Item: The ultimate compliment. A fellow fractal artist told me she is currently using one of my images as her desktop wallpaper :) Apparently the particular image has a special meaning for her. It was very kind of her to let me know that she liked the work.

This one reminded me of those giant turbines on jet planes!

Today's Gratitude Item: One of the ladies in our dance group turned up on her birthday! We were all very happy that she chose to come dancing on her special day rather than stay home and do "birthday things".

Road Trip

Had fun with this one :) Its totally different to what I'm used to making. Different can be good though.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to start my car after school today. I managed to leave my lights on this morning and only discovered this after first period (email is a wonderful thing). Happily, the car started despite my lapse.

Sometimes even military aircraft are grounded by storms :)

Today's Gratitude Item: A weekend filled with doing nothing - am totally relaxed and "ready" for the coming week.

Hot Zone

As in those planes are flying into the "hot zone".

Today's Gratitude Item: Our community Luach (ie: calendar) features a fair bit of my art. I'm even on the cover! It would have been even better if the "images from" bit had my last name spelled correctly, but nothing is perfect.

Night Flight

Dedicated to all those pilots out there.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the presentation that I gave to two groups of 9th graders at school today went really well. The presentation took a while to prepare but it was deeply satisfying to do. The students were extremely attentive and clearly interested in the topic. It made quite a change from teaching Math!

At its best :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting to hear family stories! Especially the exciting ones. Lets just say my family tree is extremely interesting.

Best of Show

Wouldn't it be cool if the rosettes given to the winners at dog shows were fractals :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Being "almost". That means being almost over my cold and being almost up to date on school stuff. Truth be told, like many of my colleagues (and students), I'm "hanging out" for the end of term.

Fetch Boy!

Sometimes dogs chase stuff that is way to big for them to catch. My question is always, what will they do when they get it? My tiny little dog used to chase / bark at birds that were much bigger than he was. It was funny.

Today's Gratitude Item: Vaseline / lip balm. I have a cold at the moment which means blowing my nose a lot. Putting Vaseline on periodically helps prevent things getting too painful.

Golden Retriever

This golden retriever was a perfect fit for the golden background.

Today's Gratitude Item: Our student teacher was going to do some photocopying and he asked me if he could do any for me while he was at it. Having someone else do my photocopying was a luxury. A bit surreal but very nice (I'm a bit stretched for time at the moment).

Luxury Dog Pillow

Sometimes man's best friend gets to have some really cool furniture. This is one of those times.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally finding some good websites on misleading graphs. For some reason, they proved to be elusive earlier in the week. Now I have more than enough material to share with my students.

Wanted: A Friendly Fireman

The idea of cats being stuck in trees has always made me laugh. This is just another reason that I prefer dogs to cats, dogs don't have claws and they don't climb trees.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a "new" car at a reasonable price. Turns out that my car had chaises damage from Thursday's accident and needed to be replaced. To cut a long story short, I bought a "new" (as in new to me, but actually quite old) car. Said car is perfect for my needs and very similar to what I had. So its all good.

Super Skier

Skiing on super wavy water. It looks like fun.

Today's Gratitude Item: Got my second Statistics Assignment back. So far so good.

Afghan Hound

On an Afghan rug. What fun.

Today's Gratitude Item: I'm OK! My car, not so much. This morning was far more eventful than normal. Lets just say the car in front of me stopped. I stopped. The car behind me did not manage to stop. Damage to both front and back of my car :( Happily car could still be driven (sort of) and I made it to school (and home) again without further incident. Being in a small accident leaves me feeling grateful, especially when one realises that it could have been a lot more serious. My family have been wonderful and my awesome dad has already taken care of a lot of the details for me - I'm extremely fortunate to be surrounded by people who care so much about me.

Woven Walkway

Just the right surface for walking one's dog. When it comes to some dogs, its hard to tell if the human is walking the dog or if the dog is walking its human.

Today's Gratitude Item: One of my students remembered to bring in some old "Economist" magazines for me - this is a good thing. I'm looking for misleading graphs to show my one group of students and was hoping that the "Economist" would provide some examples. Of course life being life, the "Economist" is the wrong place to look for misleading graphs - so the search continues.

French Poodle

When its raining cats and dogs, be careful you don't step in a poodle :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Interactive resources. I was looking for a way for my students to be able to generate box and whisker diagrams easily and found this box plot maker. It even does comparative box plots if you ask it nicely. Only downside is that you need to take a screenshot and then use a graphics program if you want to print / use the image. They do give really clear instructions on how to do this though.

Irish Lattice

This lattice is just perfect for a cat to climb.

Today's Gratitude Item: Statistical software :) I realised today that I'm partly responsible for setting one of the Statistics assessments at school. Having the necessary software makes the job a lot easier!

Sunday, September 07, 2008

Well not exactly, they are fish and the background is gold, but these are a lot interesting than your average goldfish.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding some new (to me) Apo scripts. It was getting hard to keep on generating interesting looking fractals. With the scripts, its easier to get something new and different. Said fractals still require a fair bit of tweaking though.

Coral Magic

Dedicated to all those SCUBA divers out there :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Our one lemon tree has got ripe lemons on it :) Very convenient (and tasty).

Angel Reef

This one combines two of my favourite things. A dense texture and a spiral. Sometimes it feels as if creating these sort of images has more to do with luck than skill :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting off work early - especially as its Friday :) It felt a bit surreal leaving school at the start of lunch.

Something Fishy - In a Good Way

I've a feeling there will be more "fishy" images to come :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Spring is here :) The rain has been plaguing us for the last month or two has disappeared. Today was the second fine day in a row. For some reason, this past winter felt longer than usual.

Cricket Guy

This one gives an interesting perspective on a game that I really don't understand. The rules seem incredibly complicated with matches sometimes lasting three days!

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting the "Useful Sheet" for our current Maths topic completed. My students call the summaries I create "Useful Sheets" so I'm assuming they are helpful to at least some in the class.

Fuzzy Fashion

Presenting another in my "Fashion" series. Perhaps orange is the next hot fashion colour (the only problem being that in real life, I don't own any orange clothes).

Today's Gratitude Item: Gmail. For some reason, I could not send an email to a hotmail account from my other email (it bounced back as undeliverable) - which was weird as it has worked before. Happily it appears to have worked using gmail.

Floral Fashion

Today's fashion tip is to wear a scarf to spice up an "old" look. Scarves may be the only reason to love winter.

Today's Gratitude Item: The best chocolate ever! A colleague brought some of extra special stuff in and shared it around at our faculty meeting. It was very very good!
