Tongan Flag

Turns out that Rugby is a pretty big deal over in Tonga. This one is dedicated to our Pacific neighbours.

Today's Gratitude Item: Realising that I only need to bill my clients next month and not this month (I'd got it wrong and thought that I was going to get my invoices out a week late - that would be bad).

Out on the Farm

Turns out that in New Zealand, one is never far from the "Great Outdoors". Even in a large city like Auckland, the rural areas are not far away.

Today's Gratitude Item: A better than expected "one off" dance session which aimed to teach a group of dancers the basics for a wedding that is happening on Sunday (the bride in question was one of the dancers). This session was a great - mostly because everyone was clearly having fun and enjoying the whole "pre-wedding" experience.

Tisha B'Av 5769

The events in the "tragedy" definition were sourced from Aish.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: That one of our most experienced dancers is back from the cruise she went on. Having someone else in the group who is able to teach / lead does take some of the pressure off - which is good.

Bear on Stairs

Dedicated to one of my colleagues who has recently given birth to her first child - a girl.

Today's Gratitude Item: All but one of the parents I had booked interview with this evening "made it". This is good because it means only having to follow up on one "no show".

Sunset Hills

These hills are alive with dance!

Today's Gratitude Item: Meetings that finish early - always a nice surprise. Wish it would happen more often.

You won't know what is "out there" until you look!

Today's Gratitude Item: My small sting on community radio went really well. It was a huge amount of fun and I'm amazed at how quickly the hour flew by.

If she tugs a bit harder, will the entire pattern unravel?

Today's Gratitude Item: My nephew smiled at me :) Said nephew is 2 months, 2 days old. The last time I saw him, all he did was cry the whole time, so this was a definite improvement. :)

Dream Jump

As in any jump that is high enough to clear the bar. Decorations are optional.

Today's Gratitude Item: The chance to rest! I'm really exhausted and am officially giving myself the afternoon off.

Jumping in Circles

There are circles in those rectangles - hence the second half of the name.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to negotiate a room change with a colleague so that I get to use a classroom which has a smartboard. Our rooms were shuffled around at the start of the semester and the room I was assigned yesterday did not have a smartboard - which makes teaching for me difficult given that all of my resources are designed to be used in conjunction with one of these modern marvels. So being able to trade rooms was a huge relief.

Running with Fire

In New Zealand, rugby is the hottest game around.

Today's Gratitude Item: I'm going to be on the radio!! I've been invited as studio guest on the "Protea Hour", which can be heard on 104.6PlanetFM from 2:55pm - 3:55 on Sundays. The show is aimed at South Africans living in Auckland and its basically a live conversation between the host and invited guests. Its all rather exciting and I'll probably blog more about how things went after the experience.

French Flag

Presenting the latest in my Fractal Flag series. No doubt at some point there will be more to come.

Today's Gratitude Item: That life is full of quirky stuff. Like giant lamingtons. That sort of thing just makes me smile - that and the fact that there is such as thing as "National Lamington Day".

Russian Flag

Turns out that project I was working on needed a Russian flag too. This one was a bit of a challenge to make but in the end it worked out well.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my brother inspired me to revisit my own website. Ironically I spend far too much time working on other people's sites and my site had fallen into a tragic state of disrepair. This is in the process of being remedied.

Greek Flag

I needed a greek flag for one of the projects I'm was working on. So this got created.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting new walking / dancing shoes. The new set are particularly nice as they don't have laces. It will be an interesting experiment to see if the elastic they do have is sufficient. If its not, I have a spare pair or regular sneakers in my car.

Discus Dude

He's getting ready to make his move. The blue background is there to aid concentration :)

Today's Gratitude Item: That the major project I was working on is completed! I had no idea it would take so much time and energy and I'm extremely happy that its finished.

Diamond Discus

One should not really throw the discus on a red carpet - but in this case I'll make an exception.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting hold of a certain piece of information that I needed to complete a major project. It should be all done (at last) by the end of the weekend.

Another Tri

The "tri" in question being both a triquetra and a "triborder" Apophysis variant rather than a misspelling on my part.

Today's Gratitude Item: Salmon sushi for lunch kindly supplied by the school. The nice thing about having "call back" (aka - working when the students are still on holiday) is that school provides us with beautiful healthy lunches.

Strange Matter

These guys are wondering what exactly they are looking at. Its probably best if they don't get too close to the action.

Today's Gratitude Item: Unexpected visitors. My mom had a real blast from the past today when a very old friend from back home arrived without warning. It was a major surprise but in a good way :)

No Obstacles

With the right attitude, there really are no obstacles to achieving greatness.

Today's Gratitude Item: Our congregation finally has a Rabbi again. We got that our long search is over today :)

Jumping Star

This one started off as a fractal gasket. Then things got interesting.

Today's Gratitude Item: The second hand CS3 WOW! book that I ordered through Amazon arrived today. It was delivered weeks ahead of schedule and is in almost perfect condition. I originally got the CS2 WOW! book from my local library and it was so good, that buying the correct version for my software was a "no brainer". This is not the kind of book one can get through in 4 weeks - and its something that I will end up referring to on a regular basis.

Nuclear Madness

Sometimes politicians can be a bunch of clowns. This is not a good thing. MAD stands for "Mutually Assured Destruction" - also not a good thing.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being sent a link to a new Israeli dance. This one is relatively straight forward and it was a good opportunity to see if learning a dance only from the Internet was possible - so far so good.

Photographic Dream

Somethings are so unusual, they just have to be photographed!

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally fixing a blouse that I bought ages ago. Said garment is really lovely but the buttons did not go high up enough. Today I learned how to make something called "thread button holes" and they did the trick. You can't even see that the garment has been altered :)

Not so Simple

In Israel, nothing is simple. I think they should modify the flag to reflect this reality by replacing the plain Star of David with a cooler symbol made up of two "impossible" triangles.

Today's Gratitude Item: My mouse is working again. For some weird reason it stopped working completely. Happily unplugging it and then plugging it back in seemed to fix the problem. Most of the time I use a stylus / tablet when on the computer but I use my mouse to "right click" and sometimes scroll, so having it out of action was most inconvenient.

Charmed - I'm Sure

This triquetra was made with Fractal Science kit. It was actually quite easy to produce. To be clear, I'm not a "Charmed" fan, in fact, I have never even watched an episode but they symbol is popular and people keep asking for it. Happily I have the params for this one and can edit the colours without too much pain.

Today's Gratitude Item: Happy clients :) Its really something of a relief when clients approve completed design work. Note to self: must develop more confidence in design abilities.

Dual Flower Trap

Another Fractal Science Kit (FSK) creation. Thanks to more hints and tips from Ross, the creator of FSK, this one is a "one render, two colours" miracle.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having a problem easily solved by googling for it. Problem was that IE was inserting unwanted white space below an image on a webpage that I was creating (Mozilla handled it fine). Turns out that both IE6 and IE7 do not implement html in the standard way and unless the end of the "td" tag comes right after the "img" tag, it will insert unwanted white space. The problem was weird, but the fix was incredibly basic. My only regret is struggling for a good thirty minutes (and slowly going crazy) before googling for a solution. For the record, I use Firefox as my default browser and loathe IE.

Soft Bears

The phrase "warm fuzzies" springs to mind when looking at this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally coming up with a decent idea for my Simchat Torah graphic. That image will appear on this blog in due course.

Face Pendants

These guys appeared and I could not resist them. The original fractal was a single colour. I rendered it twice (one brown, one blue) and then worked my magic.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to figure out a dance that we learned at camp 9 months ago by revisiting the video. This is the first time I've had to review a dance on my own with the intent of teaching it - and it seems to have worked. Will revisit again tomorrow and then "dry run" it before class on Weds to see if I can do this. Here's hoping...

Sphere Net? Sunset!

This is the result of playing with Fractal Science Kit after getting some really helpful hints from Ross Hilbert (the guy who created the program). I post processed the image a bit to get the ripple effect / background.

Today's Gratitude Item: Our community is in the process of trying to find a new Rabbi. We may have found one - and he and his wife are currently visiting Auckland. The cool thing is that they came to the library today so I got to meet the Rabbi one-on-one which was extremely convenient. Lets hope thy like us enough to accept the position.

Javelin All Star

I "cheated" with the colouring on this one. I rendered the star sphere twice, once in blue and then once in red. Then I used the magic of Paint Shop Pro to get exactly the colours I wanted. Turns out those colours are just right for the 4th July - hope everyone out there has a great one!

Today's Gratitude Item: That my local library had Paul Ekman's book "Emotions Revealed" available. That and its easy to order the other books he's written and get them for free. There used to be a $1.00 charge for ordering books through the library, but since our current library is "temporary" whilst they build a new one, they've waived those fees to encourage people to keep using the local library. We've been waiting 5 years for a new library, and I'm in no hurry to see that project completed (they say it will be ready for business at the start of next year).

Measuring Floor

When tiling a kitchen floor with lino, its super important to check your measurements before cutting / gluing the lino. Sadly in real life, there is no "undo" button.

Today's Gratitude Item: I think there is a way to create posts using a template which will save me a fair bit of typing in the future. This is rather exciting and would have remained an undiscovered feature if I was not in the process of setting up a blog for a client.

Spiral Flower

After days of coaxing, I finally managed to get Fractal Science Kit to produce an image worth rendering. I sense that, like Apophysis, this program is capable of making really great images - finding those images is proving to be a challenge.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding a wealth of ready made .eps symbols that are free to use. The Design Of Signage website which featured the symbols is at the preceding link.

American Football

Or close enough! The boys are actually playing rugby.

Today's Gratitude Item: Remembering to take along blank Dance Camp registrations to class tonight. It was a good way to remind my fellow dancers to register early for camp and quite a few of us from Auckland will be going. I can't wait! My form is complete and ready to be mailed. All I need now is to find accommodation close to the venue - that should be simple as there is a list of places to look at.
