Great Success

This one really appealed and for once, finding colours that "worked" was quick and simple.

Today's Gratitude Item: Potatoes that are firm when being peeled. We just opened a new bag of Ilam Hardy potatoes and they are great. The Agria potatoes that we had before tasted pretty good but if left them too long, they went a bit soft and peeling them was difficult.

See Beauty

Loved the quotation. Its a challenge to see the beauty in pretty much everything but it is worth the effort.

Today's Gratitude Item: Starting on a project that has been on my mind for a while. For some reason, getting started is always the hardest bit - after that, it seems "easy".

Wednesday, December 29, 2010

Sometimes life feels like its rushing by really fast. Every so often, I wish things would slow down just a bit.

Today's Gratitude Item: Easy, long summer days :) I love living in the Southern hemisphere where our holidays coincide with the festive season. Not having to put up with the cold and snow that has been plaguing those in the North is an added bonus.

Take Care

Getting the double Koru was not as difficult as one might think. The only post processing on this one is the black background, signature and quotation.

Today's Gratitude Item: The book I'm currently reading is surprisingly good! After the disappointment that was Patricia Cornwell's The Last Precinct, its refreshing to read something that is gripping, fast paced and intriguing. The book in question is The Law of Nines by Terry Goodkind. This one is a fantasy novel so its not for everyone - but so far I'm really enjoying it.

Wasted Days

Sometimes its good to revisit old styles to see what happens.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my dad is enjoying a book that I recommended (from the library). I read it first and knew that he'd like it. Its good to be right about these things.

Long Journey

This one was inspired by Johnb over at the Fracfan Forum. He kindly shared some parameters which ultimately made this image possible.

Today's Gratitude Item: This cool online Latex editor which lets one create beautiful Mathematical formulae / documents and then export them as .pdf files. It takes a bit of practice to get the hang of it but its much faster than trying to get various equation editors to cooperate.

Digital Locket

If one can have wallpaper for one's desktop, how about having jewelery?

Today's Gratitude Item: Being on a role! I tried something a bit different in Apophysis and it lead to a whole series of images. Its good when that happens.

Friday, December 24, 2010

Future Computer

An experiment which went slightly strange on me.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the Christmas insanity for this year is *almost* at an end. Next time I blog, it will pretty much be a "done deal".

Night Flight

These fractal balloons took forever to create - hopefully the effort was not wasted. Dedicated to my dad who has always been fascinated by these modern day marvels.

Today's Gratitude Item: Discovering that Geogebra does box plots.

Wednesday, December 22, 2010

Logical Ripple

Loved the quotation. Its funny how ripples only appear when one is not trying to generate them!

Today's Gratitude Item: That my client's website (which was broken) is now fixed. Even better, I've found an alternate e-commerce solution which may well be suitable. Said system is free for stores with less than 15 products and luckily said client has 12 products. So its all good.

Electronic Patience

As in it took patience to create this one and patience to allow it to render.

Today's Gratitude Item: Home made pesto - all I can say is "yum"!

Monday, December 20, 2010

Learn to Create

I'm not sure that I agree with this quotation. Surely both learning and creativity are equally important. One without the other would be meaningless.

Today's Gratitude Item: Cute pdf writer. This is a nifty little app which lets one create .pdf files easily by basically printing a document as a .pdf. It really helped today as I wanted to change diagrams made in Geogebra into vectors. Turns out the easiest way to do this is to "print" said diagram as a .pdf and then open it in Illustrator for editing. Trust me when I say its easy when you know how.

Sunday, December 19, 2010

This one reminded me of ground so dry that it has started to crack.

Today's Gratitude Item: Its been raining. Normally I would not be all that thrilled about wet weather but when it brings drought relief to much of the country, then its a good thing - long may it continue.

Saturday, December 18, 2010

Take Aim

The colouring on this one turned out much better than expected.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding 70c on today's walk - after nearly turning back due to inclement weather. The fact that said weather cleared somewhat and we did not get wet helped.

Rising Empire

If you stare at this one for too long, you risk getting lost in its complexity.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the school where I used to work finally fixed the mistake with my pay. Back in October when I went to dance camp they docked a full day's pay instead of a single period (which was all I missed). Needless to say it was something of a mission to get this sorted. Happily it has ended well.

Great Mountain

Got lucky with the quotation. If you use your imagination, this one shows the sun rising over a series of mountains.

Today's Gratitude Item: That I don't celebrate Christmas. A dentist friend of mine told me that every year their business spikes because people become so stressed that they grind their teeth and need professional help. I never realised it was that bad!

Wednesday, December 15, 2010

Love Struck

Its funny how sometimes unexpected hearts just happen to appear. This one had more to do with luck than skill.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a bunch of illustrations done. It took a while but the results were well worth the effort.

Tuesday, December 14, 2010

Ripple Effect

Really like the quotation on this one. It turns out that finding the perfect gradient for this one took ages. Thus is life.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting my computer for school for next year and getting access to the various planning documents that I need.

Monday, December 13, 2010

Square Hole

This one was something of a surprise. Its one of those images where putting anything extra on it simply would not work.

Today's Gratitude Item: Doing *almost* everything on my current "to do" list. Holidays are a great time for catching up on those odd jobs.

Sunday, December 12, 2010

Hole Thing

I don't particularly like this one, but don't hate it either. Its just not quite there.

Today's Gratitude Item: Deciding not to go to dance camp in Melbourne next year. The logistics were unworkable and I was getting far too stressed over it. Happily, some of the dancers from my dance group will be going over there and they have agreed to get me a copy of the music / teaching DVD's. Whilst this is not as good as "being there", its a pretty good alternative.

Face Facts

Apparently the human brain is hardwired to recognise faces - even when no face is actually there. So, can you see the face in this one?

Today's Gratitude Item: Having a good book to read and having the time to read it :)

Friday, December 10, 2010

Working Inspiration

Made from scratch in Apophysis, the "Lazy Susan" plugin was responsible for the disc at the top.

Today's Gratitude Item: School's Out!!! Do I really need to say more? Had a great day today where we basically went in to eat. Started with breakfast and then had morning tea with farewell speeches, followed by an amazing lunch. Saying goodbye to colleagues was a bit tough but I'm excited that I have a new school to go to next year. In the meantime, let the vacation begin.

Thursday, December 09, 2010

Last Day :)

Today was the last day at my "old" school (the new job starts in February after the vacation). Below is my first ever youtube video which was created because farewell speeches are not my thing. Even my colleagues not featured in the video seemed to enjoy it.

The wallpapers featured in the video will appear on this blog in due course.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding out that many of my 7th graders were sad that I was leaving. Apparently I managed to make a positive impact on them - which is sort of the point of being a teacher. That and getting really good quality chocolates when I was officially fare welled in assembly this morning (no speech required).

Infinite Sunshine

If you squint and use your imagination, there is part of an infinity symbol on the upper left hand side of this image.

Today's Gratitude Item: Help wrapping "prizes" for my students. Tomorrow is the last day of school and the plan is to bribe them to complete a particular worksheet. The deal is as follows - play math games on laptop (no prize) or complete worksheet (one prize for each side). We will "settle up" at the end of the period so students only get to see what exactly the prize is after they have done the work. I would not have been able to wrap the prizes without help as it was a time consuming exercise and time is one thing in short supply right now.

Amber Alert

This symbol appeared all on its own in Apo! Colouring took a while to get right but the effort was worth it.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a free case for my sun glasses after managing to lose the original case that I've had for years. Said case was a lovely soft drawstring bag that held my glasses and could be used to clean them too. The replacement is identical to the one I lost (only cleaner). The optician was fantastic and just gave me a new case on the spot. Very cool.

I suspect that aside from his writing work, Homer was also a teacher, quite possibly of teenagers.

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: A lovely farewell which ended on time meaning that I had a very tasty morning tea and was not late for my period 3 class.

Misplaced Hope

Lets just say that I learned this lesson the hard way (a long time ago). Just hoping that something will happen is a pointless waste of time.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally figuring out that it is possible to drag .mp3 files from iTunes onto one's desktop and then use them. Sometimes trying to figure out where music files are hidden in the iTunes folder can be an exercise in futility so being able to make a copy of specific songs quickly is very useful.

Empty Words

The quotation really says it all.

Today's Gratitude Item: Two walks (total 8km) and two "new" books by my favourite author. Said books were ordered (for free!) from the library.

Friday, December 03, 2010

Light Fountain

The background took a whopping 6+ hours to render. I think it was worth the wait. If the clipart looks familiar, its because I used a blue version in a previous image.

Today's Gratitude Item: A really good day doing Community Service (ie: track maintenance). This involved shoveling gravel into sacks and the sending said sacks up a track and laying the gravel. All done by 9th grade students and their teachers in a beautiful reserve where its too hard to get machinery in. The kids had fun and so did we. After working in the morning, we had an awesome lunch, the kids got to go swimming in the ocean / play sports and we had a bit of a break. All in all a great day.

Thursday, December 02, 2010

Hope Dream

This one reminded me of a stained glass window.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding myself with two extra periods in which to plan work for the last few days of school. Suffice it to say, the time was well spent. We are almost there!

Chanukah 5771

Often our holidays commemorate "signs and wonders". In this case, the "wonder" (as in I wonder what to do) came first, followed by this *motorway* sign.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Making significant progress on a project that I'm working on. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and am fairly certain its not an oncoming train.

Tuesday, November 30, 2010

Ice Hearts

I've had the clip-art for a while and finally created a background that "works".

Today's Gratitude Item: That my 9th grade IT students get to hold on to their computers for a little while longer. This is a good thing as without laptops, it would be very difficult for us to do meaningful work.

A Thing of Beauty

Dedicated to all those Torah scholars out there.

Today's Gratitude Item: That today was my very last cafeteria duty! I'm so happy :)

Sunday, November 28, 2010

Green Square

This one could be an aerial view of a landscaped park - complete with paths and bushes.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the weather was perfect for doing the 10km Hadassah walk. It was overcast and not too hot - which was exactly what we needed. I will definitely do the walk again next year as it was loads of fun and was a great opportunity to network and catch up with people.

Saturday, November 27, 2010

Beautiful Mystery

Lets just say this one has a fair bit of depth to it.

Today's Gratitude Item: Relief from the heat. It was rather warm today which meant feeling tired and drinking a lot of water - happily its cooler now and I'm happily working away. It turns out that I really love working late at night when everyone else is sleeping - one can get so much done with no interruptions :)

Friday, November 26, 2010

Can You?

Loved the quotation. I think I need to repeat this for my Math students - often! Those that think they can't do it tend to give up without even trying. Like so much in life, Math is as much about attitude as ability.

Today's Gratitude Item: My colleagues in the Science faculty invited me to morning tea and gave me a beautiful card and $50 gift card for one of my favourite bookstores (it was a farewell gift). Guess who is feeling very loved and very happy :)

Thursday, November 25, 2010

True North

This one is the result of the 7x version of Apophysis (discovered yesterday), a handy tutorial and judicious use of PSP tools.

Today's Gratitude Item: Fudge :) As in the small parcels of fudge that found its way into each staff member's pigeon hole at school. It was a sweet gesture from the parents prayer group. This is a group of school parents who pray for the staff and, on occasion put food in our pigeon holes. How cool is that!

Unnecessary Art

The question is, which bits of this image are "unnecessary".

Today's Gratitude Item: Most of my students have handed in their permission forms for an upcoming field trip. Its been quite a mission to get all the forms in as students have been away for various reasons and just catching up with them has been a massive challenge. Thankfully they generally check their email and my "no slip, no trip" message is slowly getting through.

Tuesday, November 23, 2010

Purple Madness

Some days just go like that.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a full time permanent position starting in February next year. My current contract finishes at the end of the year and the school I am with indicated some time ago that they would not be able to employ me (role issues). Finally finding something suitable is cause for huge celebration - guess whose looking very forward to the new job in the new year :)

Monday, November 22, 2010

Creative Destruction

If its spiky and it gets thrown, bad things could happen! On the other hand, it is rather pretty.

Today's Gratitude Item: "Tart" strawberries. We had some after dinner tonight and whilst everyone else thought said fruit was not sweet enough - I really enjoyed them (normally strawberries are not my thing - but sour is great!)

Sunday, November 21, 2010

See the light?

This one is a Menorah (rather than a Chunnukia) - which means its good for all year round!

Today's Gratitude Item: Realising that clicking on an event on a google calender and hitting the delete key will get rid of it (no extra mouse clicks required). The only downside is that I had a huge number of events to get rid of and there is not way to get google to automatically delete them.

Saturday, November 20, 2010

Soul Dust

I saw this quotation outside a local art gallery and thought it would look good on a fractal. The font was a chance occurrence. I was going for "Monotype Corsiva" and hit "Mistral" instead.

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to create small pink bows like the ones you can get at the $2.00 store. Its much cheaper to buy them, but they are not always available and its impossible to get them in a pretty shade of pink. Turns out they were fun and easy to make.

Friday, November 19, 2010

In that moment before a winner is announced, suspense builds up until it is bursting to come out.

Today's Gratitude Item: Only three weeks of school left! I'm really looking forward to the summer vacation.

Thursday, November 18, 2010

This one took a while to create - hence the quotation.

Today's Gratitude Item: Remembering how to make cool origami boxes from last year. I managed to misplace the instructions and had to unfold a box from last year to work out how it was folded. Happily this strategy worked, even though it was not particularly easy to do.

Wednesday, November 17, 2010

Harvest Wheel

Sometimes with fractals its a matter of luck. So do you feel lucky?

Today's Gratitude Item: Having another job interview today. I can't say anything about the outcome until Friday but it was a really good experience.

Tuesday, November 16, 2010

Being organised can be a beautiful thing :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Having the music from a new dance playing in my head. Its a good thing because the piece of music is rather pleasant and I "got" the dance this time round. The fact that one of my group was able to teach it is a huge bonus as my memory of this particular routine from camp was non-existent.

Monday, November 15, 2010

It took forever to find the perfect gradient, but eventually patience paid off.

Today's Gratitude Item: That our amazing lab techs remembered me talking about how I meant to order two circular magnets set up on a stick so that the one "levitated" and they magically supplied the gear without me putting in a formal order. I really love these ladies!

Sunday, November 14, 2010

Learn, Live, Hope

This one turned out a lot better than expected - which is always a good thing.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having completed the first draft of my final reports for this year. This is always a time consuming chore and it feels really great to have it out of the way.

Saturday, November 13, 2010

Impossible Starfish

Which was almost impossible to make! As is so often the case with Incendia, the image looks much better from a distance.

Today's Gratitude Item: Both baking and small sewing tasks worked well. Sometimes doing the "domestic" thing can be deeply satisfying. I wonder why that is...

Friday, November 12, 2010

This one is bulging with something - I don't know what though.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being invited to interview with a top Auckland school for a job for next year. I currently teach at one of the top schools but due to a drop in the role, at this point the can't renew my contract which means I'm "looking". Said interview is on Monday and I'm very excited about it.

Twisted Thoughts

The quote was featured as the "Quote of the Day" when I looked at my igoogle page. It seemed to go with the image.

Today's Gratitude Item: That one of my students was so inspired by his kenken homework that he visited the official website, completed a 9 x 9 puzzle, took a screen shot and emailed it to me. This is especially impressive given that said student is roughly 11 years old. Needless to say the actual homework was an "easy" 5 x 5 puzzle aimed reviewing the factors work we did in class.
