Delf Dog

This one reminds me of Delft blue pottery, only I think its a lot cooler.

Today's Gratitude Item: That I finally fixed a minor issue with the layout one of the websites that I maintain. Realising that the rounded corners were overly complicated and not worth the effort was the key. Said site now features "normal" corners which look great and don't break like the rounded corners used to. Note to self: In future, keep things simple!

Pebble Path

Coloured this one in a bit of a rush. Happily, it "works".

Today's Gratitude Item: That some people are kind enough to put their photographic efforts into the Public Domain. I'm especially grateful for this photo which features in my Sukkot image for this year. I know Sukkot is still quite far away, but I'm on holiday now which means having the time to create the image.

Spiral Forever

If you look closely enough, you may be able to see the shape of the "infinity" symbol, hence the title.

Today's Gratitude Item: The 3d Object Tutorial at the preceding link. I could not get a label that I'd made fit on a can in the way that it needed to. This tutorial helped solve the problem :)

Blue Heart Quilt

With a background like this, the musician must be playing Country Music.

Today's Gratitude Item: That Flickr have changed their interface to make it quick and easy to add photos to groups and sets. Its a small thing but it makes my life just that little bit easier.

Sierpinski Surface

This one was a disappointment. It looked really promising in the preview but after a 26+ hour render, the final produce did not deliver as hoped. Its OK, but it certainly is not spectacular (the preview was).

Today's Gratitude Item: Internet that is once again working (here's hoping that what has been fixed, stays fixed). More importantly, getting a great view of tonight's partial lunar eclipse. Despite being a Science teacher, this is the first time that I have seen a partial lunar eclipse in real life and it was great. I owe my dad who let me know that it would be happening tonight and would be visible in Auckland between 10:00pm and 1:00am. At around 11:30pm, over half the moon had disappeared in the earth's shadow. We are very lucky that the cloud from earlier in the day has disappeared leaving a cool, freezing cold night and a great view of the sky.

Atomic Sunflower

The home Internet / phone has not been fixed yet which is not cool. Thus I'm still blogging from school. I'm part time so strictly speaking, I don't have to be on campus during my non-contact time - so there should not be any objections. If this blog does not get updated for a while, at least my visitors will know why.

The very edge of this one reminds me of a model of the atom.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting rid of at least some of the fractal greeting cards that I had printed ages ago. The original plan was to sell them at a craft fair but demand was far less than expected leaving me with a large number of pretty cards which were going nowhere fast. Happily, there is a group of 12th grade students who are prepared to sell them on trademe (NZ's version of ebay) for me. They basically do all the work and get paid a small fee and a commission for their efforts. I suspect it may also count toward their grade in some way. As far as I'm concerned, its a win - win solution.

Furled Flowers

Right now my home Internet is broken - again. This is the second time in as many weeks and has much to do with "work" happening outside on our street. They are digging up the sidewalk and replacing water pipes. At the same time, they have managed to damage unrelated underground cables which killed our phone and Internet. So this post is coming to your courtesy of school. I really hate blogging from school but not blogging at all without warning is worse.

The image below is similar to a previous image but I liked the pattern and it turned out well.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my arwork originally featured on the 2009 Auckland White Pages was auctioned off last night and raised $1000 for charity. There was a total of 36 lots going under the hammer (all the winners for the last two years from each of the 18 regions). In total $28,000 was raised with all the funds going to the Starship Foundation.

An experiment using the "oscilloscope" variation which worked out well.

Today's Gratitude Item: Chocolate *birthday* cake at today's Team Meeting :) We don't get cake often and I'm firmly of the view that the occasional slice is good for the soul. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Rain Dog

For some reason, this background reminds me of puddles after a rainstorm.

Today's Gratitude Item: Kiwi soccer madness. The entire country is in a state of euphoria after drawing 1-1 with Italy. Its just about the only item on the news and people seem to be really happy about this event - so its all good. I'm amazed how a draw can be viewed so differently by two sides. For the Kiwis, its the next best thing to a win, for the Italians its something of a disaster. I guess this is one of those times when a draw is not really a draw.

Wet Dunes

Wet sand dunes seem to be a contradiction - perhaps this one should have been called "Mirage".

Today's Gratitude Item: Rediscovering the Smart Kiddies site. Its an Australian gem that has loads of free maths resources that are perfect for my 6th graders. There's enough interactive stuff there to make me more than happy.

Primary Quotation

This one is based on the classic z=z*z + c equation - its the Mandelbrot set but cleverly disguised with filters and a gradient.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding a Jeffery Archer book in the library that I have not yet read.

Dusk Scales

Not sure I like this one - its a touch ominous / depressing

Today's Gratitude Item: Discovering that Geogebra lets you display an isometric grid. This is brilliant as it means creating 3D drawings for my Maths group is really easy. Did I mention that Geogebra is a completely free, powerful program that lets users do everything from creating graphs to coordinate geometry. Its also good for transformations and Euclidean geometry. I love that program!

I think this one will make a nice wallpaper - its not too demanding and the quotation is a nice reminder to reign in our worst instincts.

Today's Gratitude Item: Unexpected hot chocolate! We are in the midst of writing reports at school and this is a stressful time for everyone. Our ninth grade Dean (the person in charge of all the 9th grade students), organised hot coffee / chocolate for all the ninth grade tutors. She then looked up where we were and personally delivered it. Not only was the hot chocolate really tasty - it delivered some welcome warmth on a cold day. This was an extremely kind, unexpected gesture, especially as the Dean somehow knew what we all liked without having to ask us. The other Deans at school are excellent, but no one has ever done this before and it makes a huge difference. Guess whose tutor group comments are all done and waiting for proof reading?? Who knew that hot beverages could be such a powerful motivator!

Hard Work

This quotation struck a chord. All too often people attribute success to "luck" or "talent", rather than acknowledging the underlying blood, sweat and tears that went into creating that success.

Today's Gratitude Item: That our phone / Internet are now working again and should remain "fixed". I could not blog yesterday due to a dodgy connection. Today we finally got some progress and the damaged cable (out in the street) was repaired. Its a pity that it took so long to get it fixed.

Fire Singer

For some reason, the thing in the middle of the arch reminds me of an opera singer.

Today's Gratitude Item: That our Internet is once again working. It "died" at some point this afternoon and only came back "up" about twenty minutes ago. I really wish that our phone / Internet issues would get sorted so that we had reliable service. The company we are with at the moment are hopeless at communicating and we've been battling unreliable service for over a week now - not cool.

Fern Road

Fractals that appear as ferns are a never ending source of amazement. Perhaps this one should have been titled "Ice Ferns".

Today's Gratitude Item: Realising that my cell phone was still turned on! Forgetting means inevitably running low on battery power at a crucial moment.

Key to Happiness

Sometimes we take life far too seriously. This one is a reminder to take a step back and enjoy the simple things.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being content and having the time to enjoy life's simple pleasures (like reading a book in a really comfortable chair when its raining outside).

Sun Spiral

The spiral addiction was in hiding, but every so often it makes a sudden appearance.

Today's Gratitude Item: That organising some thermometers for my sixth grade Math class was much easier than anticipated. Sometimes its really useful being both a Math and Science teacher - especially when the content overlaps (we're doing measurement which means making sure our students can read a variety of instruments).

Thursday, June 10, 2010

This one is an original - perhaps people will try and imitate it (apparently that would be a good thing??)

Today's Gratitude Item: That our Internet is still working. Our landline died early this morning and has not been fixed yet (its now relatively late at night). Weirdly the thought of being without Internet was far more distressing than not having a landline. I'm wondering how we ever managed to survive without both Internet and cellphones.

Magic Ripples

White water rafting is that much more fun when done in a fractal river.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my 6th graders appreciate the electronic resources that we use in class. One of them realised that all of the 6th grade Math teachers use "my" stuff and he earnestly informed me that I was being exploited. He could not understand why I shared my resources. It was rather cute.

Satin Sensation

Originally, this was coloured a deep orange and blue, but I could not get rid of the green in the background so this meant rethinking the entire colour scheme. Sometimes rethinking colours is a good thing.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding an online activity that makes learning how to work out the difference between two times fun and easy.

Shadow Ripples

Apo burnout forced a return to Tierazon. This image appeared as if by magic with minimal effort on my part.

Today's Gratitude Item: Time differences :) Sometimes they work in one's favour - especially here in New Zealand where we are literally ahead of everyone else.

Woven Flower Net

Not my best work, but not my worst either. Lets just say that the day this one was made was a struggle.

Today's Gratitude Item: Skylights :) As in the library where I volunteer once a month is going through "remodeling" and whilst things are still in the rather messy stage, they have put in skylights and they make a huge difference. What was once an almost depressing space is much lighter now - even on a gloomy & rainy day.

Narrow Path

Is it a path between two mountains, or a drunk guy with one eye open?

Today's Gratitude Item: That this weekend is a long one :) Holidays are always good.

Friday, June 04, 2010

Rainbow Diamond

I think this one will work really well as a corporate, no-nonsense wallpaper.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding a short cut for editing events on my various google calendars.

Thursday, June 03, 2010

Joy Net

Was lucky to find the quotation. It fits the image perfectly.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having tomorrow "free" to catch up on marking and start planning for next week.

Wednesday, June 02, 2010

Dancing Drumbeat

This one has an African feel to it, hence the African quotation.

Today's Gratitude Item: Chocolate in my pigeon hole :) Its good when that happens. Also the fact that after school math tutoring does not happen during exam week which means having an extra hour in the day - said hour was put to excellent use.

Bright Star

This one was a nice surprise. I used to have a bookmark which has the same quotation as this image - its a bit cheesy but it could work.

Today's Gratitude Item: Cold weather, hot food :)
