Gutsy Grace

Was just playing around when this happened!

Today's Gratitude Item: That kids that I don't teach at school are now emailing me asking for technical help with the Smartboard software that we use. This might be as close to fame as I get :)

Inch of Time

Here is another apophysis image. I took the main image and reflected it in Paintshop Pro to create the metallic strip. Got lucky with the quotation.

Today's Gratitude Item: Fish and chips for dinner tonight - sometimes its the small things which make a big difference.

Puff Piece

This one is made up of three different base shapes. It took a while to create but I'm pleased with the final image.

Today's Gratitude Item: Remembering to collect the lids of the boxes that usually hold our photocopy paper. My students will each need one in a few weeks time when we use them to make circuit games for our electricity topic. Last year, we told the kids to bring their own box lids and too many of them simply could not get their hands on one. Asking the photocopy ladies in advance to reserve lids solves the problem - the only trick is to remember to do it. I'm almost half way to my goal of 27 lids.

Wave Form Experimentation

The pattern on this one was a result of creating a manual tessellation for my 6th grade Maths class. For the record, its way easier to tessellate stuff electronically.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting extra paid work :) Extra relief at school has been hard to come by since the recession - so getting two extra periods to do today was a very nice bonus. The fact that the classes were really well behaved certainly did not hurt.

Simple Trellis

This one was supposed to be a background for my wave form experiment but it did not work so it got recycled.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my last appointment for parent teacher conferences arrived earlier than scheduled which meant I did not need to stay as late as I originally thought.

Dawn City

Somehow everything looks better at either dusk or dawn. I guess the more discrete lighting is kind to both buildings and people.

Today's Gratitude Item: A gorgeous fine day. At least, it was gorgeous and fine when I had cafeteria duty which means that the students could sit out side and we did not have over crowding issues (when its raining, most of my time is spent telling students who did not have a seat to go elsewhere for their morning tea).

Crescent Flow

Struggle for long enough and eventually something worthwhile emerges

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally finishing a rather time consuming image. Said image will appear on this blog in due course. For now, I'm just celebrating the fact that it is complete.

Network Disc

Not as cool as "Crescent Flow" (tomorrow's image) but not bad either.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the slight mishap with my latest batch of cinnamon buns was not a total disaster. Rather than rising upwards like the last time, this batch decided to spread out instead, resulting buns that overflowed the tray causing a sticky mess. Happily said buns were salvageable and taste great. The smell of burnt sugar (from syrup escaping the baking tray and making contact with the oven floor) is now a thing of the past. Next time, the plan is to use a completely different baking tray - one which has deep sides rather than being totally flat.

Gossamer Weight

Sometimes fragile is a good thing.

Today's Gratitude Item: That its finally the weekend. This week has seemed longer than most and I'm not sure why. Perhaps its having to re-adjust after a holiday. More likely than not - the weather is playing its part too. All I know is that I'm exhausted and in need of some serious relaxation.

Sky Canopy

Took too long to find a suitable quotation for this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the hall where we dance is available from 6:30pm onwards. The plan is to get newbies to come half an hour early so that they can start to learn the basics and hopefully become regular dancers. Like so much in my life, this is basically an experiment and it will be interesting to see if it works. I have my fingers crossed.

Fern Patch

In this world, ferns are massive plants that are large enough to climb!

Today's Gratitude Item: Our free enterprise students managed to sell 100 of my fractal greeting cards on trademe. They gave me the proceeds today and it felt great!

Sun Strike

Sometimes experimenting with cogs can lead to interesting results. I realised after uploading that I left my signature off this one and can't be bothered editing it. This is what happens when exhaustion sets in :(

Today's Gratitude Item: A colleague who recently returned from a school trip to China gave all us 8th grade teachers the most adorable Panda magnets. Mine is sitting on the fridge and it makes me smile every time I see it.

Tisha B'Av 5770

Tisha B'Av is traditionally the saddest day in the Jewish calendar. This image is an edited wordle of Lamentations - the book which is read out on Tisha B'Av. The intent of the image is to show hope in the midst of mourning and tragedy.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Having my "good" camera at school. I took it in last Friday and forgot to bring it home. Turns out that was for the best as I needed it to get photos of my home room students for our year book page. Even better, I got the class captain to go around and take the photos which worked really well.

Great Divide

Only the bravest of souls are prepared to "take the dive".

Today's Gratitude Item: Gorgeous winter sun! Said sun made certain prime spots positively cozy - always a good thing on a clear winter's day.

Swimmer Swirl

Dedicated to all of those swimmers out there!

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to recall ancient banking details that needed to be resurrected. With so many passwords floating around, its a miracle that I remembered this one.

Pink Bricks

This climbing wall is a "girls only" affair.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting to borrow the X-Box from school :) Turns out that I need to play some games this weekend so that I'll have the required skills and knowledge to do the Machinima Unit with my 9th graders this term.

Deep Blue

As in a swimming pool, not the chess playing computer.

Today's Gratitude Item: The fact that itunes lets one burn a data DVD based on the playlist of one's choice. This is an extremely convenient feature and it saved me a lot of time / stress.

Hong Kong

Was particularly pleased with how this one turned out.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having my school lap top at home and being able to take it with me to dance class! I somehow managed to forget to charge up the ipod and without the laptop the ipod would have run out of power and we would have had no way to recharge it.

Tuesday, July 13, 2010

There should probably be an elephant somewhere on this one :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a ride into the city rather than having to take the bus. Normally, I'd drive but parking is extremely expensive - unless you work in the city and have a car park that you don't have to pay for (my ride is in this situation). Happily, going into the city is a very rare occurrence in my case.

Italian Flag

Needed the flag for a project - need I say more?

Italian Flag

The wallpaper version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Extra blankets! They are a much needed necessity now that winter has hit with a vengeance.

Spanish Flag

The lion on the crest is supposed to be purple rather than pink (I think). This one is based on the wikipedia version but if anyone out there can give me the hex code for the correct lion colour, I'll have a go at changing it (time permitting). For the record, I'm hoping that the Netherlands wins the World Cup final tomorrow and the flag below was created quite some time ago for an unrelated project that I was working on.

Today's Gratitude Item: A fun night out playing Trivial Pursuits. This is an annual fundraiser for the Community Outreach Worker. The only problem was that our team tied for last place! To be fair, the teams were all very close together points wise so we are not total idiots. On the plus side, the last place winners got lollies as a consolation prize, the first place team go wine. Seen as I don't drink, getting lollies is the better option.

Saturday, July 10, 2010

Once again, Wikipedia came to my rescue by providing the flag on which this image is based.

Today's Gratitude Item: Homemade Samosas. We fill ours with mince and veges and then bake them. They don't look anything like the images at the Wikipedia link but they taste great. We learned how to make them back in South Africa from friends who originally hailed from India.

Friday, July 09, 2010

Dedicated to all those who love soccer and Brazil nuts. Basic flag downloaded over at Wikipedia.

Today's Gratitude Item: New shoes. I discovered that my old ones were "past it" when they became water logged during my walk yesterday. Having nice dry feet today was a big improvement on yesterday's drenching.

Thursday, July 08, 2010

This one is for all my Argentinian friends. The base of the flag was downloaded over at Wikipedia.

Today's Gratitude Item: My mom's home made chocolate eclairs. These are sinfully delicious and feature confectioner's custard instead of the more traditional cream. They are only made for very special occasions and we have not had them for years. There *brief* reappearance made me very, very happy.

Wednesday, July 07, 2010

This one turned out really well. I love it when flags are nice and simple to create :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting my first ever pair of Capezio dance shoes. These are extremely comfortable and now I understand why most dancers rave about their shoes.

Climbing Rocks

This one took forever to create. Getting the basic fractal was simple but the subtle pattern on the curved parts was another story altogether

Today's Gratitude Item: That blogger automatically saves one's unpublished posts so that if you do something dumb like close the editor tab by accident, your work is not lost forever.

Fuzzy Newton

As in the fractal based on a "Newton" set. This one is part of the experimenting that I've been doing with Fractal Science Kit. This is an exercise in frustration as I seem to be unable to get the gorgeous images that grace Ross Hilbert's page (he's the guy who created Fractal Science Kit).

Today's Gratitude Item: The ripple effect tutorial at the preceding link. It was very useful in creating a graphic which will appear on this blog at some point in the distant future.

Sunday, July 04, 2010

Was mostly pleased with this one. As always, I suspect that Incendia has hidden depths which I'm failing to make the most of. There is a dearth of detailed tutorials which means that anything beyond the basics is guess work.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting to be a beta tester for the latest version of Fractal Science Kit. This version lets the user tell the computer to shut down when it is done doing a large render, meaning that I can render in my sleep and not worry about wasting power. I feel like a kid who gets to try out cool toys before everyone else.

Saturday, July 03, 2010

As in this design was finished in something of a rush as I had to be somewhere else. One of the hazards of creating fractals is that time mysteriously disappears. The straight bit on the RHS was created using PSP's "reflection" tools.

Today's Gratitude Item: Remembering to take dinner out of the freezer to defrost before it was too late. This might not seem like a big deal, but a minor calamity was avoided :)

Friday, July 02, 2010

Sequin Star

This one is too ornate for my taste. Lets just say that the quest to produce something truly amazing with Incendia continues. I know it can be done - but actually doing it is proving to be something of a challenge.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding out how to produce some very interesting fractals using Fractal Science Kit and learning how to reduce a 25 hour render down to a far more reasonable 2 and a half hours.

Thursday, July 01, 2010

Escher's Tower

This one turned out really well. Actually getting Incendia to create this was very exciting. The quotation was a bonus.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a fair bit of next term's Science planning done. These things always take longer than one would like so making progress of any sort is a reason for gratitude.
