Diving In

Dedicated to all those swimmers out there.

Today's Gratitude Item: Discovering Apophysis version 7x. This one combines a bunch of previous versions and has a number of new features just waiting to be explored.

A woven experiment that went well. Colours inspired in part by Eyjafjallajökull (I can't pronounce it either).

Today's Gratitude Item: That google calendars now appears to "hold" my html rather than losing it like it used to. This means it is now easier to update my on-line planner :)

Leap of Faith

Named because I don't know what this guy is getting himself into.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having extra help at the library. It has not been that long since the grand opening of the improved building and the Hebrew fiction collection was in disarray. Its slightly better now but there is still a lot of work to be done. Happily its not really my problem (oh the joys of being a volunteer).

Ripple Web

This one is probably too "busy" to suit most people.

Today's Gratitude Item: A "double" day. Walked twice (total of 8 km) and baked two batches of bread type stuff (one sweet, one savoury - both delicious). The baking might explain the need for extra walking!

What if the guy quoted below is completely wrong and we are not some grand cosmic accident?

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to borrow my dad's cellphone so that I could verify my FB account. I'm a reluctant FB'er and am really only there so that I can support my clients who have pages and are trying to get unique URL's. I can see how it is possible to waste vast amounts of time on that page doing very little of value.

Chilled Out

Sometimes its good to just chill out and relax.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a free memory stick after sharing some stuff at a smart board Maths teacher user group meeting. I also picked up a few cool tricks / ideas at the meeting so it was time well spent.

Flower Flash

This one is so pretty, its worth taking its photograph.

Today's Gratitude Item: Everything went right at dance tonight. Our latest "newbies" were enthusiastic and will keep on coming, I taught a new dance and did not mess it up and all the cheese filled mini-bread rolls that I took along were eaten and enjoyed. Teaching a new dance was especially meaningful as it is the first time that I have learned a dance off the internet and taught it. Normally, I have either done the dance at camp, or been taught it before. Being able to use the resources on youtube and teach completely new dances to the group is really good as it means we won't stagnate.

Pink Flash

Wouldn't it be fun if camera flashes really looked like this?

Today's Gratitude Item: My dad's industrial strength hole punch! It made quick work of my "file pile" which had gotten rather large.

Dark Sun

Dedicated to all those swimmers out there who train at all hours of the day.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a chocolate brownie with lunch - supplied by school. Lets just say that sometimes we get bribed to go to meetings. Today was one of those times (and it appears that I too, have my price).

Horses and Cart

The clipart was based on a photo taken a long time ago. Needless to say it took forever to create. Happily it was worth the effort

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding a car park right outside Shul after lunch (our Shul is near the center of town and lets just say that parking, even on a Sunday afternoon is an "issue"). I was asked to teach some kids a few basic Israeli dances as part of a learning conference, hence the need for a car park. Said class went really well too :)

Equal and Opposite

I found the quote only after I'd post processed the fractal.

Today's Gratitude Item: My "cheese inside the mini-rolls" worked (for the most part). Next time, I will use Parmesan cheese though as the feta cheese is too moist (even when coated lightly in flour) and the Edam, whilst delicious, has a tendency to leak out (escape).

Heavenly Madness

This one reminded me of the inner workings of a clock (or the outer workings of the Universe)

Today's Gratitude Item: Not having to do a PE (Physical Education) relief! I disliked PE as a kid and having to teach / relieve for that subject pretty much tops my list of things that are best avoided.

Pink Trap

Am I the only one who finds this image more than a little creepy?

Today's Gratitude Item: Student initiative. I really love it when my students think for themselves and solve problems without involving me in the process.

Shattered Dreams

This was originally created in red / orange but it looked really ugly. Inverting the colours made a big difference.

Today's Gratitude Item: That hot food was waiting for me when I got home :) It was great to be able to have something proper to eat before rushing off to dance class. My theory is that food always tastes better when someone who loves you prepares it for you.

Breaking Ice

If you squint and use your imagination, its a roulette wheel made out of ice. The question is, do you feel lucky?

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to literally walk off the day's frustrations. Does anyone else out there ever have days where it seems as if everyone wants something but reciprocation / appreciation / cold hard cash are not part of the deal? Lets just say that today was one of those days. With the tough financial situation, demands on my time have become relentless and a lot of "extras" are expected for minimal acknowledgment.

Secret Creativity

Is it just me or does this look like a rather colourful drain?

Today's Gratitude Item: An email from a past student in which the student told me that she missed me and that I helped her remember stuff. Its nice to know that sometimes what I do does make a difference.

Something a Bit Different

Just for a change, I thought I'd post some images of my weekend baking. I felt compelled to take "before" and "after" shots of my sticky buns as I will use them when I teach "Microbes" to my seventh graders later in the term. Its one thing to know that yeast causes stuff to rise - its quite another to see graphic (and tasty) evidence. Here goes ...

Today's Gratitude Item: That the above sticky buns worked out well. They are light and delicious. They are also safely packed in the freezer to take to dance class on Wednesday.

I just know this would smell lovely if images could be converted into fragrances.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding Guylian dark chocolate sea shells on sale for $16.00 (NZ) per kilo. These are usually between $40 and $50 per kilo so it was a fantastic price. They also happen to be one of my favourite chocolates. One per night with a lovely cup of tangerine tea really hits the spot and helps keep the chocolate addiction satisfied. All in all, its been a very good day.

Life Changing

The only miracle here is discovering the Apophysis variant used to make the fractal.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting two requests to design logos in a short space of time. One of them will hopefully pay, the second, not so much.

Wednesday, August 11, 2010

This one looks like a close up of some kind of weird fabric / net.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding the Thinking Blocks website. Its a brilliant resource for teaching students about ratios - its highly interactive and students can learn at their own pace. It even has videos to show kids what to do. Love it!

Tuesday, August 10, 2010

In any class or group, there is always at least "one" who has to be different from everyone else. I've yet to be convinced that this is a good thing. Those who teach perfect classes with that "one" challenging student will know exactly what I mean. Of course sometimes there is more than just "one" so I probably should not complain too much.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my cereal / ratio experiment went well. My students managed to calculate the ratio of chocolate : vanilla flakes in a popular cereal. They also enjoyed eating the cereal when they were done counting. Just goes to show that at least some of the time, Maths can be fun.

Off Center

Sometimes its a good when things are off center :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Faculty meeting this afternoon was canceled. Not having to go to meetings is always a good thing.

Sunday, August 08, 2010

In the face of change, are you an optimist, pessimist or realist?

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting to fall asleep in front of the TV. Apparently I really needed a nap (and the show we were watching was not all that interesting).

Volcanic Symmetry

An experiment using 'z translate' which worked out rather nicely

Today's Gratitude Item: The Raye Freedman Library is re-opening tomorrow after being renovated. Hopefully this means having more space for the books. I'm looking very forward to seeing how it turned out.

Friday, August 06, 2010

Dive Ring

Getting the clip-art to behave was a challenge - but it worked out in the end.

Today's Gratitude Item: Today's Science lesson went well. My students were surprised to find out that pencil lead (actually graphite) conducts electricity. I used a thick 6B pencil to complete a circuit and light up a bulb - it was rather cool.

Spiro Disc

This one took a while to create - and a very long while to render. For some reason, this is a lot more fun than creating patterns using Spirograph (aka: the old fashioned way)

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding the video to a dance that I wanted to revise on you tube. I'm so happy that most of the time, the videos I need are there and its difficult to imagine having to teach / learn dance without this amazing resource.

Wednesday, August 04, 2010

Fragile Green

I don't know why, but this is something that would probably have appealed to my grandmother.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having loads of people turn up to dance class :) We had two visiting tourists which was great and two other "newbies" who coped well. Here's hoping that we can attract (and keep) more dancers so that the group really starts to flourish.

Tuesday, August 03, 2010

Hope Flame

This is an experiment with a new plugin. Its OK but it would be nice if I could get apo to produce "flowers" that were not based on 90 / 45 degree symmetry.

Today's Gratitude Item: That parent / teacher interviews are over for this year and that they went well.

Monday, August 02, 2010

Snow Business

Like so many Incendia fractals, this one looked like it was going to be good but was rather disappointing.

Its sad when salvaging fractals becomes the norm rather than the exception :(

Today's Gratitude Item: That my scheduled Math class tomorrow won't happen due to Dean's assembly. Normally this would be a cause for much complaint as interruptions to teaching are all too frequent (don't get me started). In this case though, its a good thing because I'm still too sick to be completely prepared for tomorrow's session so having a day's grace is a G-d send.

Cured Boredom

This one started life as an apophysis flame but has been heavily post processed in Paintshop Pro - what can I say? I was bored!

Today's Gratitude Item: A reasonably straight forward day tomorrow. Having said that, I might come home at lunch if the cold that has been bothering me for the past two days is not a thing of the past. At least its a great reason to miss an after school meeting! After all, it would be unprofessional to hang around and risk infecting my colleagues.
