Fur Spiral

This spiral turned out to be more furry than usual - this is a good thing.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having time to think. Most teachers really don't enjoy supervising exams mainly because the job involves watching kids write an exam. You can't read while you do it, you can't mark papers (even though you may have a depressingly large stack of them awaiting your attention) and you can't plan lessons. All you get to do is pace up and down quietly and if you are really lucky, every so often someone asks for more paper. I use the time to think / plan images for upcoming Jewish holidays. So far, its worked well and I left today's a session with a bunch of useful ideas.

Dark Matter

This one has a nice texture so its worth looking at the large version to fully appreciate it.

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to write a parallel paper for my 12th grade classes for later in the year. Was given some release time from teaching to prepare this resource and it worked well.

Spin Spiral

Cog + Spiral + High Speed = This!

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting round to booking accommodation for camp in October (which will be down in Whakatane). It was easier than expected and the rates were very reasonable.

Special Swirl

This one is rather mellow. Mellow is good.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting confirmation that my dance group can use "our" hall every Wednesday in the coming months - even when board meetings have been scheduled. For years now we've had to dance on a Tuesday when there have been board meetings and this has not worked out well for the group so being able to get back to dancing every Wednesday is really great.

This one is in danger of coming unraveled - sometimes I know that feeling.

Today's Gratitude Item: Discovering that Tarisa software (for making Mathematical puzzles) is a free download. Even better, I found a huge store of ready-made algebra puzzles. Life is very good.

Striped Wonder

Another which is similar to previous ones but I liked it (nothing new there).

Today's Gratitude Item: Learning how to use something called LAN School. This is a beautiful little piece of software which lets one see what students are up to when they are on one of the school's computers. It is now possible to have control over what students are doing when they are in the ICT suite and ensuring that they are using the available time / resources appropriately is easy.

Mod Cog

This one turned out surprisingly well - it was rather unexpected.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting to have a lunch time. We were supposed to have Origami club but no one turned up. Given how much else was on at lunch I was not disappointed, especially as I had a full teaching day and a meeting at morning tea.

Tuesday, May 24, 2011

An adventure that worked. Gotta love being on vacation and having the time to play.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting clarification that students at school are not meant to be playing computer games at morning tea. Lets just say that the clarified policy allowed me to banish some dodgy characters from the library where I was on duty.

Bright Hill

I know this is similar to images that I've done in the past, but it looked good and I could not resist.

Today's Gratitude Item: A warm classroom. Especially nice when its rather cold outside.

Hooked Classic

Was playing and this happened - am not quite sure how.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding a video for Dai Maspik - a dance that I need to review with my group as we have all managed to forget it. Its impossible to imagine dancing without the benefit of videos for revision purposes. Sometimes the video one "needs" is simply not available so it was a relief to find this one.

Twisted Fabric

It took a while to get the colours right.

Today's Gratitude Item: Time to sleep / play. Work has been all consuming this week and its nice to be able to finally spend some time relaxing.

Friday, May 20, 2011

Windowed World

Finally created a sphere that was worth rendering

Today's Gratitude Item: Free morning tea and not having to do my library duty because the reason for morning tea was that we were farewelling the librarian so the library was shut :)

Jewelled Journey

I thought this one would turn out better than it did. Never mind.

Today's Gratitude Item: That a colleague brought some koeksisters to school. The only thing better than enjoying this wonderful sweet treat was the look on my other colleagues' faces when they tried it. Lets just say these things are very, very sweet and the uninitiated find them a bit over the top.

Tiger Fan

Its got orange and black stripes (sort of) - hence the title.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having a really good session with my "challenging" 8th grade math class. They now have a seating plan and things went really well. It will be interesting to see if the positive changes continue. Here's hoping ...

Moving Triquetra

Was particularly pleased with the colouring of this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: A better than expected turn out for Origami club. The kids really enjoyed the experience and it was fun watching them teach each other how to fold.

Lucky Feather

This one is a cross between feathers and a four leaf clover - thus it must be lucky.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding these Sample Problems to challenge one of my talented 8th grade students.

Mystical Feathers

If you look at this one closely, you'll see the "feather" texture referred to in the title.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally having a day where I did not need to grade papers or prepare school work. That and realising that I can use the Alumni magazine that was snail mailed to me for origami paper. Its cheaper than buying "proper" paper and by carefully choosing pages, some interesting effects can be obtained. The plan is to trial this with the students who turn up to "Origami Club" next week.

Star Viola

Named because it reminded me of the flower - but with a star in the middle.

Today's Gratitude Item: That blogger is finally working again. After two days of not being able to blog, its nice to be back to normal.

Wednesday, May 11, 2011

Super Sunflower

Its big and its bright and it makes me happy!

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding a very nicely done simulation and explanation of the famous Monty Hall problem. The plan is to play this game with my 9th graders at some point. I'm sure they will enjoy it.

Star Sphere

Everything about this image took a long time to achieve. Happily the result did not disappoint

Today's Gratitude Item: That my one group of 8th graders enjoyed playing the multiplication game that I developed. It's basically a version of "connect 4" that made them practice their basic facts (all the way up to the 12 times table).

Molten Fury

Working with Fractal Science Kit is very much a "hit and miss" affair (at least in my case). I'm still debating which category this one falls into.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally realising that the "old" editor in blogger is better than the new one. I tried to use the new one to update tonight and it would not let me (edit dialogue box would not load - just got that annoying infinite "spinner" thingy). Happily the old editor still worked. Took a bit of hunting to find instructions on how to change back (went to the bottom of the "settings" tab in blogger and used the radio button there).

Yom Ha'atzmaut 5771

This one was created using apophysis for the flag and tagxedo for the word cloud.

The word cloud is based on the text of the Declaration of Establishment of the State of Israel.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding a great template to make paper bags. I needed 20 bags for a class activity and managed to make all 20 relatively quickly.

Yom Hazikaron 5771

This one is a "twin" of my Yom Ha'atzmaut image. Once again, the word cloud was created over at tagxedo.

The text source for the cloud is courtesy of the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Zeev emailed me to let me know that my artwork recently exhibited in Tel Aviv. I'm not sure how many people saw it but its nice to know that it was on display.

Hot Luck

If you squint and use your imagination, you can see a very hot four leaf clover in the middle of this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: Its the weekend! This week has flown past leaving me exhausted. Being able to sleep a bit later and having time to catch my breath is a real boon.

Thursday, May 05, 2011

Star Lace

This most intricate of Stars worked out well. Took a while to get the background "just right"

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally having a bit of time to work on a project that was weighing on my mind. Getting the work done is like having a weight lifted of my shoulders and it feels great.

Wednesday, May 04, 2011

Flower Bow

An experiment that did not work out quite as planned. Somehow I'd hoped for "more".

Today's Gratitude Item: "New Dancers". To be more precise, dancers who have not come to my group before but know how to dance and are familiar with the basic steps and some of the older dances. We all had a good time and I'm hoping that the "new" dancers will become regulars.

Structured Fire

Its pretty enough but this one is almost *too* structured.

Today's Gratitude Item: Not being affected by the Tornado that struck Albany this afternoon. It also "touched down" in Birkenhead / Birkdale (which is *just* South of where I live - as in our old Postal area used to be defined as "Birkenhead"). The rain on the motorway coming home was really heavy and it was a huge relief to finally get to my front door and realise that nothing was damaged.

Many Waves

This one appeared - as if by magic. There was minimal input on my part.

Today's Gratitude Item: Not having to do "we weather" duty at school. This is basically due to the kindness of a colleague and it made my day.

Ribbon Maze

Revisiting old styles can be fun. I always used to wonder how other artists got Apophysis to do this. Now I know.

Today's Gratitude Item: Indoor weather - so much so that the morning walk did not happen which meant being able to sleep in (a treasured rarity on a Sunday morning).
