Christmas Wrap

This one was created around Christmas time 2011. I think there was something in the air as the Christmas type images kept appearing. Needless to say it was a frustrating time and the images were "wrong" on so many levels.

Today's Gratitude Item: Holidays are finally here!!!

Comma Spiral

This is a fractal which should give most pause (due to the comma).

Today's Gratitude Item: That one of my most "difficult" students has got a job and tomorrow is his last day at school. Both of us are very pleased about the situation.

Hot Pole

The clip-art was inspired by a "letter to Santa" writing area which was set up at a local mall back in December. I got a photo of the fake post box and sign and the clip-art is the result.

Today's Gratitude Item: Not having dance tonight. Took a much needed break and am feeling better for it. Only 2 days to go before the end of the term. Let's just say that everyone is counting down.

Beanstalk 2.0

The beanstalk was originally for another project but that did not work out quite as planned. At least the effort was not completely wasted.

Today's Gratitude Item: That Scribus (a powerful desk top publishing application) is both open source and very well documented. This will make teaching the DTP Unit for my computing class a lot easier than it would otherwise be.

Lined Silver

Everyone has heard of "silver lining". This one is "Lined Silver".

Today's Gratitude Item: That my computer battery lasted the entire way home. I let it get a bit 'run down' during the day forgetting that it was not my turn to drive. Happily it did not 'die' on me meaning that the trip home was rather productive.

Sahara Spring

Took a bit of post processing in Paint Shop Pro to get this - but not as much as one might think.

Today's Gratitude Item: Avoiding the sporadic showers which make living in Auckland so 'interesting'. Especially for those of us who enjoy walking outside.

Blue Hamock

This one appeared almost completely by accident. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Today's Gratitude Item: Feeling much better! I've had a weird "sort of" cold since Wednesday. No coughing, just a runny nose and generally feeling 'down'. After a lovely long nap today am feeling 100%. Am really grateful that what looked like a bit of a cold did not turn into a nasty cough.

Twisted Ground

When the ground starts to twist, its a good idea to look where you're going.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting positive feedback. Knowing that one's efforts are appreciated is always uplifting.

Bright Star

This one would look good on top of a Christmas Tree.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally finishing my second Apophysis Tutorial / Screencast. It was good practice to make said screencast but it took a while to get it right.

Ying Yang Sculpture

Was really pleased with how this one turned out.

Today's Gratitude Item: Deciding to leave both my school laptop and iPad at work! I needed a break from it all so opted to take the evening / afternoon 'off'. My plan now is to read an old fashioned paper novel for a bit and then go to bed.

Green Flash

Some things are so bright, you just have to shield your eyes.

Today's Gratitude Item: Freshly baked mini-muffins (yum)!

Monday, June 18, 2012

This one is surprisingly delicate. It was quite difficult to make.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the latest version of Open Office appears to be a big improvement on previous versions. I had a look at it today and there are some really great features. Its probably not as 'comfortable' as Office 2010 for most but if I did not have Office and had to fork out the money to buy it, I'd probably opt to go the free route instead.

Sunday, June 17, 2012

As in Springs + Sensation.

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to create most of the screencasts that I'll need for the coming week. It's taken a while but being "ready" is a great feeling.

Network Blues

Took a bit of experimenting to get this one "just right".

Today's Gratitude Item: Hearing from an old friend. Said friend sent through a lovely, chatty email and it was great to read all her news.

Stepping Stone

A bit different from my "usual" offerings, but I like it.

Today's Gratitude Item: Discovering the "Frosty" filter in GIMP (accessed by going filter --> alpha to logo --> frosty). It lets one make really nice buttons quite quickly. This was fortuitous as my students need to create some buttons for their websites in the near future and this filter will be quite helpful.

Cog Explorer

The clip-art worked really well with this one. That girl is definitely on an exploring mission (note the magnifying glass around her neck).

Today's Gratitude Item: An unexpected break. One of my classes was down to only four students courtesy of an outdoor education trip, a random course and the usual winter health issues.

Blue Hair Machine

This is the place where blue hair is made :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting petrol for $2.05 /L. When I went out, the price at the pump was $2.08 and by the time I made it home, the price had dropped. It's nice when that happens.

Tuesday, June 12, 2012

Hot Springs

Not to be confused with the tourist attraction.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my meeting this afternoon was cancelled. Had loads of work to do so not having the meeting was really helpful.

Monday, June 11, 2012

String Finity

Look closely and you'll see an infinity symbol in this one. Still can't see it? Try squinting!

Today's Gratitude Item: Being given the 'go ahead' to give my class an extension for the project they are working on. There is no way the vast majority of them would have made the deadline and produced high quality work so being able to take a bit more time will be really valuable. I'm hoping that they make the most of the opportunity.

Spiro Crazy

Originally rendered in blue and white. Inverting the colours made something "ordinary" a whole lot better.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a massive amount of work done. I'd go into detail but it's one of those really boring stories (happily it ended well).

Saturday, June 09, 2012

Close Flower

This one was really due to luck. The trick was to stop when it looked good.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to check student homework on the weekend from the comfort of my own computer. Using dropbox and google drive has made it easy to keep track of student progress with minimal fuss.

Friday, June 08, 2012

Place in the Sun

This one is OK. Not great. Just OK.

Today's Gratitude Item: That next Monday's "Paid Union Meeting" has been cancelled. I'm not part of the union but the meeting would have meant that my one of my classes would have been cancelled and we are already pushed for time so not losing that class is something of a relief.

Dynamic Ripples

Another example of where inverting colours can be a good thing.

Today's Gratitude Item: Discovering adobe's Kuler Colour tool. This is perfect for my students who are currently creating concepts for their websites. It makes developing good looking colours really easy.

Wednesday, June 06, 2012

Flowing Line Flower

Took a while to decide on both the design and the colours but it was worth the wait.

Today's Gratitude Item: Fresh salmon on special. Let's just say that it's been too long :)

Tuesday, June 05, 2012

Fragile Blue

Sometimes a small part looks nicer than the whole. This was one of those times.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting around to downloading and installing Google Chrome on my work laptop. I used to use Mozilla but it kept complaining that the plug-ins were out of date (and it would not update them properly). This probably has more to do with school's filtering system / settings than anything but it's great to be able to surf without having to worry about updating plug-ins and so on.

Monday, June 04, 2012

Spring Spiral

Was playing with some old parameters in the hope of generating something new. Turns out that this is a good strategy.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting the microphone on my laptop to work. Said microphone was needed so that I could add verbal instructions to a screencast.

Sunday, June 03, 2012

Formal Waves

These are too structured to be natural but I liked the symmetry.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my dad's blackberry takes really good reference photos (and that he was able to email said photos to me on the spot). It's amazing how far technology has come in a relatively short period of time. When I was small, taking photos was much more of a mission (and you could not instantly see what you 'got').

Saturday, June 02, 2012

String Sphere *almost*

This one is not quite a sphere, but then its not made of string either.

Today's Gratitude Item: That 'extra creamy' feta cheese only has 15% fat. The weird thing is that the regular feta right next to the 'extra creamy' had 24% fat. I always thought that "creamy" implied richer / more fat - in this case, it's great to be wrong.

Piano Man

Well, more like a piano accordion man. Took a while to create the clip-art.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the pizza provided for our morning tea did not have ham on it! This meant being able to enjoy said pizza which was lovely.
