Infinite Checkers

This one is a variation on a theme. Happily everything just "clicked" in this case.

Today's Gratitude Item: That tomorrow is officially the first day of spring :) It just gets better from here on out.

Second String

Created from the same params as "String Cascade", this one is "OK" but I could not find a truly satisfactory gradient.

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to get a copy of the installer for Dreamweaver onto my computer without actually installing the software. I already have a fully licensed version but my students need to use the trial version to complete one of our units of work. It turns out that many of them were having trouble downloading it from the web so being able to give it to them on a memory stick is really helpful. I'd love to say I managed this feat all on my own but in reality it was only possible thanks to the assistance of some of my really talented (and super nice) students.

String Cascade

Took a while to get this one "just right" but it was worth the effort.

Today's Gratitude Item: See image below. Thanks Shutterstock!

$28 x 5 = extremely happy

Strings Attached

Sometimes having "strings attached" can be a good thing.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding the Open ClipArt Library. It's goal is to "create an archive of clip art that can be used for free for any use". So far it's working really well! One of the best things about the library is that most work is supplied in .eps format which means that editing / recolouring is very easy. Being able to do this without breaching copyright is brilliant. I wish I'd found out about this resource earlier as it would have made some things a lot quicker.

Ribbon Bar

This one started life as a single bar which was duplicated, flipped and mirrored to create the pattern. The clip-art is based on a statue called "Three girls on a log" by Auguste Moreau (according to the plaque at the bottom).

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding out about the Creative Commons Search Plugin. It makes it really easy to search for images available under the various Creative Commons licenses.

String Change

The change really refers to a penny and a farthing which is what this fractal reminded me of.

Today's Gratitude Item: Figuring out how to do a reverse image search on Google. Let's just say this is a really nifty little tool.

Saturday, August 25, 2012

As in this one combines a spider's web with the image of a wave / spiral.

Today's Gratitude Item: Wikimedia Commons in general and Public Domain images in particular. Finding reasonable quality *free* images which can be used with artist's permission is really wonderful. If only I could teach my clients to use these resources. They currently tend to do a google search for images and then ask me to include whatever they find in various publications - all too often they send through images which are watermarked (not cool). As someone who sells work on-line, I get really, really annoyed when people don't respect copyright even if it is sometimes through ignorance. I wish that people would realise that just because images are on-line, it does not make it OK to use them without asking permission first.

Space Race

The chequered flag in this one signals that a race is involved. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Today's Gratitude Item: That everyone in my 12th grade computing class has now passed our latest assessment. It helps that the topic concerned was very easy but a 'win' is a 'win'.

Puppet Planet

If it's made of and controlled by bits of string, then it must be a puppet of some sort.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally figuring out how to get my new phone to talk to my old Sim card. Let's just say that the instructions were not all that clear.

Pink Cross

Not exactly the world's most original name for this image. Still, it's pretty enough.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a new cellphone. My old one "died" unexpectedly but I managed to acquire a lovely new Android phone for less than $100.00. The best thing about said phone (so far) is that it has an on screen keyboard making which makes texting quick and easy.

Time and Tide

This took a bit of "time" to make and reminded me of the ocean (of course). It's plain enough to make a rather boring desktop.

Today's Gratitude Item: That most of my students appear to be able to use Scribus without any problems. This was our first foray into using an open source alternative and I'm surprised by how well it has worked.

Monday, August 20, 2012

Ice Floor

The use of "perspective" in this one is its saving grace. I wouldn't mind getting a floor that looked like that.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the server at school is now fixed. It had been down since the storm on Friday night which meant big problems today with no one being able to do essential things like check email, get information from the Internet, print stuff or do the role. Not having any connectivity made for a quiet day in which not much work was done. Happily the server is now back 'up'. I know this because my school email is once again working.

Fuzzy Blue Triangle

The result of a bit of fooling around. Must remind myself not to do that too much.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting at least a bit of work done. I've created the materials for two thirds of our desk top publishing topic and the end is in sight. This is our last Computing topic for the year and it will be nice to get the resource creation phase out of the way. I'm trying really hard not to think about how little time my seniors have left. They seem to think that the end of the year is a long way away but it's not!

View from on High

It's amazing what one can see when on stilts.

Today's Gratitude Item: "China Guy" is back! It turns out that there is someone on the East coast of Asia who seems to like my Shutterstock Fractals. He (or perhaps she) tends to download them in quantity and has been away for quite some time. It looks like he is back (at least for the moment) and this has given my sales a nice boost. It doesn't hurt that he appears to work on weekends too.

Below is a picture to show what I mean

Polished Pollen

This one reminded me of pollen which has been magnified - a lot.

Today's Gratitude Item: That another of my more difficult students is no longer in my class. Not having to deal with this particular student makes my life a lot more pleasant. I feel a bit sorry for the poor person who "gets" her instead of me though.

Pretty Path

Clip-art took forever to create. It's based on a sculpture of kids on stilts but when I changed the colours a bit, somehow the 'sculpture' took on a life of its own.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding simple instructions on how to set up a three panel brochure in Scribus and being able to *eventually* coax the school printer into printing it correctly. Initial attempts resulted in the one side being printed upside down and our printing lady tried just about every option before giving up. She told me the one option that she had not tried and of course, when I tried it, it worked. They do say that the solution is always in the last place that you look (an old, not very funny joke).

Gateway to Everywhere

Presenting the gateway to everywhere. The trick is to choose the right path.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being forced to dance in a much smaller space than usual. This unfortunate turn of events lead to us re-choreographing one of our dances and it is now suitable for performing at Simchat Torah.

Copper Fortress

As in this one reminded me of a very strong door that might guard an ancient fortress.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being half way through the term. Some of my students are working really well which is good - others not so much. At this point it really is up to them to make the effort if they want to succeed.

Monday, August 13, 2012

Sea Wall

It's a wall made from the colours of the ocean.

Today's Gratitude Item: That YouTube lets one upload .wmv files and automatically converts them to .flv files. This nifty little feature came in handy today.

Sunday, August 12, 2012

Golden Pastures

Perhaps this is where horses go to retire. It looks like a nice place.

Today's Gratitude Item: That I can easily access the school database from my iPad. I could set up a remote session and do the same thing on my laptop but that approach is awkward / clunky. Using the iPad and the laptop made getting in touch with parents today quick and easy.

Magic Kingdom

Complete with fireworks and a trusty steed.

Today's Gratitude Item: A chance to rest. Was really sad when Shabbat was over as the opportunity to take time out was sorely needed.

Friday, August 10, 2012

Square Swirl

All this one needs is a stick and some wind and it could be a fractal pin-wheel.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to use a document camera thanks to my Graphics colleagues. I wanted to create a video to show my students how to create a draft brochure for our desktop publishing topic and this involved some real time paper folding and sketching. Said camera worked a treat which is great.

Forced Flower

This one was a struggle. Its too similar to previous efforts and whilst its pretty enough, its hardly original. Sometimes it goes like that :(

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting a sale over at The Art of Business Cards. I went through a phase where I created a bunch of cards but after getting no sales, I gave up hope and decided to focus on making stuff for Shutterstock.

Wednesday, August 08, 2012

Had fun with this one. I like the complexity :)

Today's Gratitude Item: That one of my most "challenging" students is no longer in my class. His computer broke and he won't be getting a new one. Normally I'd be pretty upset if a student could not afford to do my course but this particular student is the bane of my existence and having him removed from my class is a massive relief.

Whirling Windows

As in if you look closely, you'll see a bunch of small rectangular windows in the main ring.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a new cable to connect my laptop to the projector. The old one was temperamental and an endless source of frustration. The new one is hassle free.

Monday, August 06, 2012

Beyond Borders

This one worked well with almost any gradient. I eventually settled for the green / blue / purple colours as they seemed "right".

Today's Gratitude Item: That a staff training screen cast I created was very well received (it got an official "showing" at our full staff meeting this afternoon).

Sunday, August 05, 2012

Modern Transportation

As in the background is modern and the penny farthing was a form of transportation.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a decent chunk of work done this afternoon. It's a pity that it took much longer than anticipated but at least it's out of the way now.

Saturday, August 04, 2012

Rough Road

The lad in this one would probably be better off if he was wearing some protective gear.

Today's Gratitude Item: That our rowers won gold medals in the Olympics. Being above the Aussies on the medal table (at least for now) does not hurt either.

Fenced In

I like how the string in the fractal matches the wire in the clip-art.

Today's Gratitude Item: Laughing so hard that I cried. The guest speaker for our teacher only day was Pio Terei and he was awesome. This was one of the best 'motivational' speakers that I have ever seen. It was a brilliant start to a lovely day.

Presenting: Spikes!

If only it were possible to get ribbons like these - wrapping gifts would be much more entertaining.

Today's Gratitude Item: That tomorrow is teacher only day! Whilst it's still work, having a bit of a change and the chance to do some planning is more than welcome. The fact that we get given morning tea is an added bonus.

Wednesday, August 01, 2012

One of the nicer images to appear on my screen. Some days are simply "good".

Today's Gratitude Item: That my dad got the "all clear" after his colonoscopy today (not a fun process and am very glad that it ended so well). The result was a massive relief to us all.
