Missing Mosaic

As in this one has a whole bunch of tiles missing.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having help putting together that photomosaic puzzle mentioned in an earlier post. It's been a mixture of fun and frustration!

Monday, December 30, 2013

Grate Wall

The background of this one reminded me of a metallic grate / wall - hence the name.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a free raspberry pi (thanks Orion Health). Now all I need is a suitable SD card and a power supply.

Sunday, December 29, 2013

Desert Dome

I wish I could say that I came up with this one on my own but it is based on this tutorial. Obviously tweaking was involved. If you are going to try this, you probably should know that the 'crackle' variant slows down renders. A lot.

Today's Gratitude Item: Anchovies on my home-made pizza. The experience will certainly be repeated in the coming months.

Saturday, December 28, 2013

Flower Top

As in it's a flower in a *fractal* bottle top.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being well and truly in 'holiday mode'.

Friday, December 27, 2013

Wobbly Web

This one was made by a high tech spider.

Today's Gratitude Item: Saving work often! My computer 'froze' after being left it's own devices for a bit. Happily nothing critical was lost.

Thursday, December 26, 2013

Weird Wave

On a weird 'carpet' background.

Today's Gratitude Item: Some random person's carport. Used said carport for shelter from an unexpected shower during my morning walk. Without it, would have ended up being cold and wet.

Wednesday, December 25, 2013

Simple Structure

Which was simple and fun to make.

Today's Gratitude Item: Sleeping in! It was raining this morning so our normal walk was postponed and we all got to sleep later than usual. Bliss...

Tuesday, December 24, 2013

Wide Eyed Wonder

Not sure what I was thinking with this one...

Today's Gratitude Item: A 'bonus' piece of sushi. The lady at the shop cut one of the pieces too small and gave it to me as a free 'extra' on my regular order.

Monday, December 23, 2013

Splash Step

Who knows where stepping on this particular stone will lead.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a cool hot air balloon photomosaic puzzle (1000 pieces). Am looking forward to assembling it in the near future!

Sunday, December 22, 2013

Making Space

To make space, begin with a spiral...

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to go to bed really late *almost* guilt free.

Saturday, December 21, 2013

String Scales

As in scales made of string / wire.

Today's Gratitude Item: That some problems are easy to fix. It's a pity that too many problems are not in the 'easy to fix' category.

Friday, December 20, 2013

Grasping Infinity

This one reminded me of two claws grasping an infinity symbol. The background took a remarkable amount of post processing.

Today's Gratitude Item: Mindless Fun. That is what holidays are for :)

Thursday, December 19, 2013

Outside the Box

As in there is something trying to escape from inside the box and it looks quite creepy!

Today's Gratitude Item: Cooler weather! After the heat of the last few weeks, having a cool day was a welcome relief.

Wednesday, December 18, 2013

Fractured Face

Sometimes when things break it can be a good thing.

Today's Gratitude Item: A brilliant 'final' dance session. Today was our last class for 2013 and it was really great. Am looking forward to resuming class in 2014.

Tuesday, December 17, 2013

3/4 Modern

Yet another image which did not turn out as well as hoped.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting through the day without a nap. Had a very late night yesterday and the heat just added to the problem. Coffee helped a little bit - but not nearly enough. Am headed for bed sooner rather than later!

Sunday, December 15, 2013

Purple Pods

This one is a bit to 'busy' for my liking but it was fun to make.

Today's Gratitude Item: This interactive Python text book.

Saturday, December 14, 2013

Gentle Geometry

For once it looked better with a white background.

Today's Gratitude Item: The fact that Air New Zealand safety videos are really cool. The latest Hobbit themed offering is one of my favourites.

Friday, December 13, 2013

Infinite Frustration

This pattern keeps coming up and whilst it is pretty enough, the repetition is getting rather annoying.

Today's Gratitude Item: A really yummy chicken / almond sandwich - nice lunches are always a good thing.

Thursday, December 12, 2013

Fashion Flame

An experiment with colour (and the lack thereof).

Today's Gratitude Item: Free, easy to use Python IDEs (like Wingware).

Wednesday, December 11, 2013

String Waves

I thought that this one would look nicer than it does.

Today's Gratitude Item: Free Internet and free coffee - so far CS4HS (Computer Science for High Schools) has been awesome. Being in Wellington is fun too.

Tuesday, December 10, 2013

Ribbon Road

Easy, tame and perfect for a corporate desktop.

Today's Gratitude Item: Midweek sushi - always a cause for celebration. Being at the start of summer vacation is a really great feeling. Weirdly, I'm on a course for the next three days (Computer Science for High Schools) but it should be a lot of fun and it does not really count as work.

Monday, December 09, 2013

Straight Curves

As in this one is made up of straight bits and curves.

Today's Gratitude Item: A noteworthy afternoon excursion (translation: found a $5.00 note on my afternoon walk). Every so often it pays to exercise.

Sunday, December 08, 2013

Holy Hamentashen

As in it reminds me of hamentashen and it has a hole.

Today's Gratitude Item: A relaxing Sunday which involved walking, dancing, making ice-cream, cutting out silver snowflakes (don't ask!) and reading a good book.

Saturday, December 07, 2013

Lattice Work

If you look carefully, you'll see the a bunch of Stars of David.

Today's Gratitude Item: That some snail mail I have been waiting for arrived today. The almost instant nature of digital communication means that waiting for something to arrive in the post has become something of a novel experience.

Friday, December 06, 2013

Haunted Forest

I can't see the ghosts, but I know that they are there!

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting to taste panetone. One of the Science teachers at school brought some for morning tea and it was lovely. It's quite complicated to make but apparently dead easy to buy - especially around Christmas time.

Thursday, December 05, 2013

Dawn Wheat

The title really says it all

Today's Gratitude Item: That good old fashioned 'Paint' was able to open an image which my admittedly old version of PaintShop Pro 'choked' on. A bit of experimentation revealed that my version of PSP does not like foreign language characters in the file name.

Chanukah 5774 - 8th Night

For all those coffee lovers out there. This is my favourite image of the entire series. Is it just me or is it a bit sad that Chanukah is almost over?

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to track down work from a student from last year to prove that she passed a given assessment. Said student got in touch last night saying that the grade was not appearing on the NZQA website (trust me, this is a big deal). Happily, I have evidence that the grade was entered into the school database and can prove that she passed the assessment - so hopefully we will be able to resolve this issue with minimum fuss.

Tuesday, December 03, 2013

Chanukah 5774 - 7th Night

For all those athletes our there.

Today's Gratitude Item: Asparagus. This might be my new favourite vegetable. Or perhaps it's the nice cheesy chive dip that goes with said asparagus (a little goes a long way).

Monday, December 02, 2013

Chanukah 5774 - 6th Night

One of my favourites in the series - was quite easy to make.

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to finish the PowerPoint for our school prize giving on Wednesday night. It looks like proceedings will go on for quite some time and I'm wondering whether I should start a betting pool / sweepstakes to keep things interesting. Maybe we could bet on...

  • The length of the principal's speech
  • The length of the chairman of the BOT's speech
  • The length of the guest speaker's speech
  • The overall length of the ceremony

At least the food afterwards will be tasty. Our hospitality teacher is catering the event and she used to be a chef. Whether anyone will be hungry after an overly long ceremony is an open question.

Sunday, December 01, 2013

Chanukah 5774 - 5th Night

Took forever to create this one. The maze 'works' :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Having time to enjoy a lovely book (Ask Bob, Peter Gethers). It was oddly compelling and completely different to what I usually read.

Saturday, November 30, 2013

Chanukah 5774 - 4th Night

Dedicated to all those tetris lovers out there.

Today's Gratitude Item: Cheaper petrol. For some reason, the fuel stations to the West of the city are a whopping 6c per litre cheaper than their counterparts in the North. Moral of the story? If you are travelling through West Auckland (and live in the North), fill up with fuel.

Friday, November 29, 2013

Chanukah 5774 - 3rd Night

For the crossword aficionados. Original crossword was generated over at puzzlemaker.com.

Today's Gratitude Item: Hopefully getting another web design client. It's a relatively straightforward site and hosting will be involved. Which is good :)

Thursday, November 28, 2013

Chanukah 5774 - 2nd Night

This is the most traditional chanukia of the series.

Today's Gratitude Item: Figuring out how to use line connectors properly in MS Office 2013. This means that I can now use MS Office as a crude flow-chart tool and when I move boxes around, the arrows will stay attached to said boxes. Anyone who has ever tried to make an organisational chart will probably know what I'm on about.

Wednesday, November 27, 2013

Chanukah 5774 - 1st Night

Based on this image. Weirdly, the original menorah had 8 branches instead of seven...

Today's Gratitude Item: Spare Chanukah Geld. Will distribute to my colleagues in the morning - should be fun.

Tuesday, November 26, 2013

It's *almost* Channukah

This one started out as a 'what if' question and then grew from there. It took a ridiculously long time to make. Details are best viewed at full size. The crossword puzzle / maze are real - if you want separate versions of them, please ask nicely.

It's a day early because my plan is to post an appropriate wallpaper for each day of the festival. Stay tuned to see what I mean...

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Apple pieces wrapped in filo pastry topped with cinnamon and sugar and baked until golden - a rare, tasty treat.

Monday, November 25, 2013

Crinkled Triquetra

The search for a great triquetra image continues...

Today's Gratitude Item: That our staff meeting this afternoon was mercifully brief - thanks in part to a double booking of the auditorium. Short meetings are good meetings - that's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Sunday, November 24, 2013

Frozen Sunrise

The title is ambiguous - just like the image.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a whole lot of 'small' chores done. Suffice it say some of those 'small' chores were actually quite large.

Sacred Halls

The question is, what is at the end of these hallways...

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a new hair dryer. It's funny how 'inconvenient' life becomes when small things stop working.

Friday, November 22, 2013

Midnight Triquetra

Sometimes purple is a good thing.

Today's Gratitude Item: Large doors on both sides of my classroom. This means being able to generate a cross breeze - which is a good thing given our current warm weather.

Thursday, November 21, 2013

Sunflower in Brass

I thought this one would look better than it does. It's OK, but the colours are not quite what I'd hoped for.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the ePub I made to teach my students basic (and not so basic) formatting in Word works. I've tried it using Readium (a Chrome extension) and in iBooks on my iPad. It will be interesting to see whether my students prefer using an ePub to other materials (such as videos embedded in a .pdf).

Wednesday, November 20, 2013

Quarter Sunflower

This is one of those times when the background is a lot nicer than the foreground fractal.

Today's Gratitude Item: A good turn-out for dance. Sometimes the group is much smaller than expected and it can be difficult to anticipate how many dancers will join us for any given class.

Tuesday, November 19, 2013

Star on Silver

For some reason this one makes me happy. It's good when that happens.

Today's Gratitude Item: That most of my home room students seem to enjoy participating in the "Word for the day" challenge. Each day, I put a new word on my board and if the students can tell me what it means, they get lollies. This activity has proved to be rather popular with most either knowing the word or whipping out cell phones / devices to look it up. Turns out that bribery can be a good thing.

Monday, November 18, 2013

Fire Bead

Bright but uninspired. Sometimes following where parameters lead is not a good thing.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having time to create resources for next year. It's a pity that everything takes longer than anticipated.

Sunday, November 17, 2013

Sparkling String

This one would make a lovely piece of jewellery.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having help with baking! Two sets of hands is a lot faster than one. Results were really tasty.

Saturday, November 16, 2013

Marine Memories

This one reminds me of a nautilus.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having time to de-stress after a too-busy week. Was feeling a lot more human by this afternoon.

Friday, November 15, 2013

Gold Fern

If at first you don't see the fern, then try squinting.

Today's Gratitude Item: Useful professional development. Learned, networked and enjoyed good food and great coffee.

Thursday, November 14, 2013

Copper Scales

Best categorised as 'vaguely interesting'. I'm not too keen on the bit at the top left hand side though.

Today's Gratitude Item: Junior exams are finished! Which means no more 'supervised study' periods and no more exam supervision. Suffice it to say, pacing up and down for an hour whilst watching 25 odd students write an exam is not my idea of time well spent.

Wednesday, November 13, 2013

Blue Clock

For some reason this one reminded me of a wrist watch...

Today's Gratitude Item: That my external moderation came back and it was 'all good'. Moderation is basically 'quality control' carried out by the government and it is quite important (long story). Needless to day, it was a relief that the moderator agreed with the grades that I assigned and has 'high confidence' in my assessment abilities.

Tuesday, November 12, 2013

Connected Christmas

This one would make quite a cool Christmas ornament. It's a pity that it is virtual rather than real.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting most of my planning / documentation for next year done. This was quite a big job - made slightly easier by the fact that I could recycle at least some of this year's work.

Monday, November 11, 2013

Eye Spindle

This one is simple weird.

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to memorise the names of most of the kids in my new tutor group. Having them in the room for an hour of 'supervised study' was helpful (although in come cases there was not a huge amount of study happening).
