Rising Damp

For some reason this one freaks me out!

Today's Gratitude Item: A clean bill of *dental* health. Not too sure about the *mental* health but one can't have everything.

Black Hole (Certified Kosher)

Way out on the edge of the universe, there is a black hole that looks just like this (or not).

Today's Gratitude Item: That even when things turn to custard - there is hope. In this case I get to go in to school (during my vacation!) to try and get a *technical* problem sorted. Thankfully our tech guys don't get to take a holiday at this point.

At first glance this one reminded me of an escape pod of sorts.

Today's Gratitude Item: A fun night out. Went to a trivial pursuits evening and had a brilliant time. Learned that "Nike" is the Greek god of Victory (and my team were victorious) - which made the evening that much sweeter. It turns out that coming first (even if that honour is shared with two other teams - long story) is way better than coming last.

So Easy?

Creating the original fractal was easy, putting the image together with the background - not so much.

Today's Gratitude Item: "Alone time" - as in no demands, no interruptions and no pressure. Sometimes solitude is a wonderful thing.

Criss Cross

A simple name for a simple fractal.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding a really cool 'cherry' (literally)! Needed said cherry for the top of a *virtual* cheesecake which I made for Shavuot. Confused? You can see the cheesecake (and cherry) here.

Chocolate River

If it involves chocolate, its got to be good!

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting some new funky lime-green walking shoes - what more could a girl ask for?

Bumps in the Road

Sometimes things don't go all that smoothly. And sometimes that is OK.

Today's Gratitude Item: Home made 'trail mix'. One of my dancers is diabetic so when I take sweet bread to class, I usually make her a sugar free version. This time around, I supplemented the *too* small bit of 'special' bread with a container of raisins, dried apple, cranberries (dried), cashew nuts and pine nuts. Needless to say this went down even better than expected and my friend was thrilled. It turns out that necessity really is the mother of invention.

Pretty Star

This one did not turn out as well as anticipated. I suspect that the colours have something to do with that.

Today's Gratitude Item: Hot tea, Lindt chocolate. Need I say more?

Monday, April 22, 2013

Fire Disc

Perhaps one of my brighter ideas??

Today's Gratitude Item: That Visual Basic is a lot easier to explain / understand the second time around. Last year, my students really struggled through the programming topic - this year I'm hoping it will be different and am in the process of screen casting the 'basics' so that it's easier for everyone. Here's hoping that my efforts are not a waste of time.

Sharp Ripples

It just goes to show, ripples are not always gentle and relaxing.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a fair bit of boring but necessary paperwork done. Sadly the mountain of 'stuff' to do during my 'holiday' (and I use the word in its loosest possible sense) is only slightly diminished.

Unknown Map

As in a map of the unknown!

Today's Gratitude Item: Rain! Especially as it held off until after our morning walk. After a very long dry spell, it's a huge relief to have the rain return.

Friday, April 19, 2013

Funky Fan Rays

Only I'm not all that great a 'fan' of this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: Holidays are here! Even though I have tonnes of school related "stuff" to do in the next two weeks, I'm still doing my "happy dance". Let's put it this way, much like many of my students I love school - especially when it's closed.

Strapped 3.2

Reminded me of a particularly colourful baggage strap - the kind I'd love to have to make my suitcase easy to identify. In retrospect this image can be filed in the "What was I thinking!" folder.

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to get an "off-line" version of Visual Studio Express 2010 for using with my students next term. Last year I had students who struggled to download and install the software from the internet (dodgy internet connections + huge files = painful problem). Hopefully we can avoid those issues this time around.

Cog Cascade

Was really pleased with this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: That many of my students have a great sense of humour. It helps when things get stressful.

Tuesday, April 16, 2013

Cross Way

The 'bits on the side' worked out really well.

Today's Gratitude Item: Making reasonable progress on writing some curriculum documentation for next term. This sort of paperwork is a necessary, time-sucking evil. At least it's easier to do the second time around.

Yom Ha'atzmaut 5773

This one is closely related to my Yom Hazikaron image. The "Being there is Everything" slogan is not original - in fact, it was a major branding campaign by Air New Zealand back in 2007.

Today's Gratitude Item: That this morning's free hot chocolate was everything I'd hoped for.

5773 Yom Hazikaron

Created to honour the soldiers who gave their lives in defence of Israel.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally finishing a series of interactive .pdf's / screen casts to teach my students how to use Open Office base. The most challenging / frustrating part of this process was figuring out how to make Base calculate an average for grouped data. Let's just say the process was more complicated than it should have been and the 'help' was not all that helpful. This really is a case of getting what you pay for (Base is free).

Bright Flower

Very pink but in a good way.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally having a half-way decent idea for this year's Yom Hazikaron / Yom Ha'atzmaut images. Realised on Thursday afternoon just how late I left it this time around. I blame work pressures for not having enough time to illustrate!

Friday, April 12, 2013

Cog Container

As in it's a container made up of cogs.

Today's Gratitude Item: The prospect of free coffee / hot chocolate first thing on Monday morning. Apparently "The Coffee Guy" is coming to visit and we all get to partake from 8:00am onwards.

Cognition Revisited

Simple but hopefully effective.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding out about XAMPP. This software will make teaching databases to my senior students quite easy. Even better is the fact that one of my colleagues at a nearby school is using it and he's OK with me using / recycling the You Tube videos he made showing the kids what they need to do.

Wednesday, April 10, 2013

Paua for the People

Tried a new (to me) variation and this was the result.

Today's Gratitude Item: That our "Video Conference" gear is working again. We had a slight mishap where our technician put in a firewall which effectively prevented us from calling out. Tomorrow I get to play 'catch-up' with my e-class who missed out on teaching time because of this. Fun, fun, fun.

Square Dance 3.1

Made from virtual feathers.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a 'flu jab for free. This was done at work making it quick, easy and super convenient. Here's hoping it does the trick and helps keep the worst of the winter 'sniffles' away.

Monday, April 08, 2013

Star Stripes

Made on a surprisingly warm day. Perhaps I should hold on to this one until the middle of winter.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting loads of 'stuff' done on "Teacher Only" day. It turns out that school is a lot easier / more fun when the kids stay away...

Reaching Out

This one contains over 2000 names of those who perished in the Holocaust. The names are from the Central Database of Shoah Victims' Names. The number on the left arm belonged to well known song writer, Fritz Löhner-Beda. More information is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Going to an 85th birthday party and meeting at least two potential 'new' dancers for my group. Here's hoping that bit of 'networking' will bear fruit.

Saturday, April 06, 2013

Rising Star

The colours came as a pleasant surprise.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting an extra hour of sleep tomorrow. The only problem is this officially means the end of those lovely long summer days (insert deep sigh here).

Friday, April 05, 2013

Purple Disc Flower

I felt like making a screen cast to show people how to get this type of image. So I did. You can see it over at my YouTube channel.

Today's Gratitude Item: That at least some of my students have *finally* passed a Unit Standard we did earlier. There were a lot of small things that they had to get right and it has taken a while for them to prove their skills.

Thursday, April 04, 2013

Ice Tree

Simple but hopefully effective.

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to resuscitate my main database after it 'died' over the weekend. This required help from both the wonderful people at the OpenOffice Forum and my tech guy at school. It's a long story with a happy ending.

Wednesday, April 03, 2013

Teaching Torah

It looks simple but trust me it's not!

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to make a series of videos showing my students how to use Open Office Base filters and queries. When it works, it's very easy. The next step is to show them how to create reports (less easy, but doable).

Tuesday, April 02, 2013

Pretty Woman

A large amount of pink string was used to generate this image :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to complete most of my marking. Basically I spent all day marking my senior student's "Brief Development" assignments. This was a massive task that was both depressing and time consuming. You know it's "bad" when mundane tasks like making dinner, folding laundry and ironing shirts start to look like good options.

Free Fall

Let's just say this one was unexpected.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the $10.00 I found whilst walking this morning was real money and not a cruel April Fool's joke. Not having to go in to work on April Fool's Day is always a bonus (mostly because the kids enjoy annoying pranks).
