Trellis - Reinvented

Presenting the humble trellis, like you've never seen it before.

Today's Gratitude Item: That Kaluach is 'fairware'. As in you can download / use it for free but if you like it, you probably should donate something to the guy who programmed it. This piece of software lets one create a Luach (calendar) with all the information one could want - which makes it extremely handy for my local synagogue.

Fractal Fall-Out

As in the colours reminded me of the fall (nothing new there) and this one is quite spread out.

Today's Gratitude Item: Not having to go to school tomorrow. I've probably said it before but nothing is quite as wonderful as the start of a holiday :)

Purple Haze

This one harkens back to an era before people realised the evils of smoking. It's hard to believe that this habit was seen as being elegant / cool.

Today's Gratitude Item: Daylight saving is *almost* back. Losing an hours sleep is a small price to pay for 'longer' evenings. Bring on summer!.

Hot Hoop

The background was a nice surprise on this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally being on holiday! This past term has been 'intense' and the break is very welcome. I use the word 'holiday' in it's loosest possible sense as I'll still be marking work, replying to emails from kids and later next week, going on a two day 'professional development' course.

Simchat Torah 5774

The idea for this one came from my dad. It took a ridiculously long time to create. The images on each 'seat' were found over at Wikimedia Commons and are *sort of* in the Public Domain.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: That the America's Cup is over. One could argue that Team New Zealand snatched defeat from the jaws of victory but things are never quite that simple. The other guys threw a tonne of money at the challenge and by the end of it, they had the better boat. The long, painful process of losing the cup was not much fun and it will be good to be back to normal.

Magical Mist

"Ghost Like" is an apt description of this one. I tried it with more intense colours but in this case, subdued was the way to go.

Today's Gratitude Item: That someone can't ready the timetable! Basically they told the relief co-ordinator that 'cover' was needed and I was asked to do it as my seniors are busy with exams. Was happy to take the class but was even happier when it turned out that my services were not needed. Have managed to make good use of the extra time to catch up with marking / urgent paperwork. Somehow in this job, there is never enough time to do everything that *should* be done.

Contained Curvature

Nice to look at. Easy to make.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting home safely from dance. It was a bit too windy for comfort on the Harbour bridge. In summary, "It was a dark and stormy night..."

Cylinder Weave

Here is the first in my "Roaring 20's" series. There will be more to come...

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting to the local Hospice shop in time. Technically was 5 minutes late but the good people who work there were happy to take some excess crockery off my hands (long story - good ending). For those readers not in New Zealand, Hospice is a charity which runs thrift stores where you can take second hand items and they will sell them. The shops are run by volunteers and all proceeds of sales go to fund the charity's work.

Flower Button

The ultimate clothing accessory.

Today's Gratitude Item: iOS7 :) Upgraded today and love the fact that closing apps is quicker and easier than in iOS6.

Forest Fabric

Reminded me of rippling fabric. Falls under the title of 'nice and soothing'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Cherry blossoms! The tree outside is starting to come back to life which means summer is on it's way.

Some Spindles

Not exactly inspired. For some reason I thought this one would look better than it does.

Today's Gratitude Item: Learning how to send 'bulk' emails to parents using the school’s database. Basically a previously time consuming (but necessary) task just became quicker and easier to do.

Long Day Doodle

This is the electronic equivalent of doodling when bored.

Today's Gratitude Item: Making a dent in my overly large marking pile. Even better is the fact that all going well, should get even more marking done tomorrow.

Sukkot Sameach Everyone

Wouldn't it be great if you could buy a 'ready made' kit set which was easy to store and easy to assemble? Of course that might take some of the fun out of the entire Sukkot experience. Sukkah in the image based on this photo. Note this image is published under a creative commons 'attribute / share alike' license.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: That even though it's Sukkot, it's not raining! Of course down here in Auckland, New Zealand there is a distinctive 'nip' in the air. Maybe next year's image should feature something a bit more 'cosy'.

Loads of Ribbon

For some reason I really love fractal ribbons. Perhaps it has something to do with their shiny smoothness.

Today's Gratitude Item: Two more days before our seniors have their practice exams. This means my students won't be in class from Friday onwards and it will let me catch up on my massive marking pile (long story). My plan right now? To get some sleep because I'm exhausted.

Attractive Opposites

Named because purple and green are on the opposite side of the colour wheel.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting an unexpected *extra* 8c off a litre of fuel thanks to my carpool buddy. Turns out that "Z" had a special offer, if you said "Team New Zealand" when paying for fuel, you got an extra 8c off per litre (today only). My carpool buddy told me the 'magic words' and it made a great start to my morning.

Simple Cylinders

Not the most creative of pieces but still quite nice.

Today's Gratitude Item: That sometimes marking can be fun - especially when that marking involves playing games students have created as part of their studies.

Rose Convention

This one ended up looking like a series of panels simply because the design did not tile properly. It took forever to get it to co-operate.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having an easy fast! Raison bread has never tasted quite so delicious.

Yom Kippur 5774

Here's wishing everyone an "Easy" fast!

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Discovering that pushing opens a previously closed tab. One of my students told me about this incredibly useful short-cut which is great for when one closes a tab by mistake.

Spiral Control

As in just when one thinks the spiral addiction is under control, this happens!

Today's Gratitude Item: That 'my' Pizza Bites' turned out really well. Inventing *sort of* new recipes is always fun. Truth is I have a mountain of marking to do so I procrastinated by spending the afternoon/ evening in the kitchen.

Peak Easy

Not exactly the high point of my day, but the peaks were different enough to be worth rendering.

Today's Gratitude Item: A timely and useful meeting with colleagues from other schools which will help me to do my job more efficiently. It's good when that happens.

Tuesday, September 10, 2013

Same Old Symbol

And yet it was still pretty enough to be worth rendering.

Today's Gratitude Item: Discovering that it is possible to 'batch resize' images using Photoshop. Had around 30 photos which were huge and needed to be resized, so being able to do this with minimum effort was great.

Monday, September 09, 2013

Soft Security

Reminded me of a lovely soft blanket.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to recycle a lot of content from a Unit I taught last year for this year. I'd almost forgotten how efficient recycling was as most of the material I've been delivering recently has been 'new'.

Sunday, September 08, 2013

Stacked Steps

Stare at this one a while if said steps are not immediately apparent.

Today's Gratitude Item: That Team New Zealand is "two up" in the America's Cup. Let's just say Yachting is a big deal in this part of the world and the entire country is keen to see the Cup come home.

Saturday, September 07, 2013

Happy Accident

The flower / stars were accidental - which is another way of saying that I can't remember exactly what I did to create them.

Today's Gratitude Item: A really good break from all things technological. Also the fact that my various in-boxes were not overflowing with 'stuff'.

Wednesday, September 04, 2013

Shana Tova 5774

Rosh HaShana = Apples + Honey. That's just the way it is. The apples above were bought especially for this graphic. I remember the days when apples were for eating and resulting images were a nice bonus.

Note: This blog will be taking a break for the holidays. I should be back on Saturday evening.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting two days off school (and a four day weekend). No computer, no students - sheer bliss.

Tuesday, September 03, 2013

Strung out Stars

Getting the background 'right' on this one took quite a while.

Today's Gratitude Item: That it is really easy to make QR codes by using various on-line tools. Have discovered how to make coloured codes and incorporate images / logos into them (it's very simple to do). The only tricky bit is testing the code with a number of devices / readers.

Monday, September 02, 2013

Simple Columns

This started out as something relatively simple. Then things got a bit 'complicated'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding out that this time around, I don't have to supervise senior exams which are towards the end of the month (long story). This means having time to get marking / planning done and I'm looking forward to the opportunity.

Modern Quilt

This would look good as a bedspread.

Today's Gratitude Item: That winter is officially over in my part of the world. Only 7 weeks of school to go before my senior classes leave. This is both an exciting and terrifying thought.
