Cool Implications

In this one, the Star of David is implied.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having a really great day. Most of my students are working hard, I got random, positive feedback on some images that I created and some feared extra work at school did not eventuate.

Toy soldiers make the best guards - they are completely loyal, don't need to be fed and don't require any monetary compensation.

Today's Gratitude Item: Enthusiastic students. This year I have a group of 11th grade students who badly wanted to take my subject last year but couldn't. Now that they finally get to take my class they are very excited. A large group of them turned up really early for their first class of the year and got straight into the work - it was incredible.

Hot, Hot, Hot

The title really says it all.

Today's Gratitude Item: Carrying a spare set of sneakers in the trunk of my car. One of my dancers came to class directly from work and forgot her shoes. She was going to leave class early (sore feet) but it turns out we are the same size so she literally danced a mile in my *spare* shoes.

Tunnel Curve

Presenting a very pretty variation on a theme.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my presentations on Digital Citizenship and e-Skills were well received by my colleagues. Everyone was very kind / encouraging.

Cross Curvature

Is it just me or does this look a bit like scaffolding??

Today's Gratitude Item: Learning how to reset my Moodle courses for the start of the academic year and learning how to make that annoying 'News' forum disappear. Now all I need is a way to get the 'move' feature to work on Mozilla / Chrome (it only seems to work in IE).

Forever Festival

The middle of this one reminded me of a festival mask / infinity symbol - hence the title.

Today's Gratitude Item: Tea Breaks! When things are not going well, taking a brief 'tea break' can be really helpful (trust me on this one).

Checkered String

Did not turn out quite as expected. This is not a bad thing.

Today's Gratitude Item: On-screen keyboards. Had to get yet more files off my old machine and did not want to go through the hassle of connecting a physical keyboard.

Friday, January 24, 2014

Checkbox on Steroids

Revisited 'old' parameters and this is what happened.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting my school timetable / calendar onto Google. This is always a bit of a 'process' and it's great to have it mostly done.

Thursday, January 23, 2014

Wire Mosaic

This one is the same basic parameters as "Checkbox on Steroids"

Today's Gratitude Item: Four days of holiday left. The summer break has disappeared with alarming speed and it is almost time to get back into the thick of things. Happily, we 'ease in' gently with Monday being a public holiday (at least, if you live in Auckland).

Aerial Invasion

Guaranteed to give crystal clear reception.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being one step closer to getting a Creative Commons policy in place at my school. The pamphlets from my contact over at Creative Commons New Zealand helped.

Tuesday, January 21, 2014

Spiral Surf

Was just playing around when this one appeared.

Today's Gratitude Item: Surviving Auckland's 'Wild Winds' without any dramas. Happily our power stayed on and our trees remained upright.

Monday, January 20, 2014

Spinning checkers

This one is 'more of the same' - sorry about that. There is only so much one can do with the 'disc' variation.

Today's Gratitude Item: Random emails from complete strangers who like my work (and want to use it for one reason or another).

Kiwi Waves

If you use your imagination, squint and turn your head a little to the left (or right), you might be able to make out the two Kiwi heads in the middle of this one (the green spiky bits are the beaks).

Today's Gratitude Item: One of my photos was accepted on Shutterstock. Normally I post illustrations because my photographic abilities are somewhat 'limited'. Almost did not bother to submit said photo and it will be interesting to see if it sells.

Arc Lights

As in lights in the form of an arc.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having a really relaxing 'do nothing' Saturday. Sometimes it's good to just take a break from it all and 'chill'.

Friday, January 17, 2014

Vein Spiral

This one reminded me of the 'veins' one can see on leaves - only it's a spiral.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my students did better than expected in their external examinations. I had hoped for good results and was really pleased with the number of 'Merits' and 'Excellences' from my Y12 students.

Thursday, January 16, 2014

Light Bundles

As in reminded me of bundles of light.

Today's Gratitude Item: A 'full on' day which thankfully included an emergency afternoon nap. There are times when coffee just does not do the trick.

Missing Perspective

Similar to "Pink Wave" but without the 'perspective'.

Today's Gratitude Item: The end is in sight. As in a task that has taken a very long time to complete should be finished by the end of the week. Here's hoping that things go smoothly and that there are not any unforeseen bumps in the road.

Pink Wave

This one turned out really well. It's good when both foreground and background co-operate.

Today's Gratitude Item: Realising that my Apo renders were taking a very short time not because my computer is super-fast but because one of the critical 'quality' settings was wrong. The revelation came not at my computer but when in the kitchen preparing bread dough for tomorrow (we're almost out of home-made bagels). Said setting has been adjusted before it became a problem.

Blue Sphere (again)

Similar to previous works but I liked the 'weave' on it - so it got rendered.

Today's Gratitude Item: Slowly starting to get back into the swing of things. Whilst I'm still technically on vacation, have a tonne of stuff to get done before school starts. Happily, managed to do some of it today.

Sunday, January 12, 2014

Spiral Candy

If you squint and use some imagination, you'll perceive a blue, spiral lollipop.

Today's Gratitude Item: Coffee muffin and tea. I know this sounds odd but it 'works'.

Saturday, January 11, 2014

Woven Ribbon

Behind every good woven fractal, lies another woven fractal!

Today's Gratitude Item: That the creator of Fractal Science Kit was kind enough to send through my registration details so that I could successfully re-download FSK without having to pay for it again. Not having to pay for the software again (and getting free upgrades) is something really special.

Unravelling River

This one is similar to other recent images but at least it has perspective.

Today's Gratitude Item: The new computer is working perfectly! Turns out the 'turn on' issue was due to my *old* powered USB hub. Discovered this after taking the computer back to the shop first thing this morning and seeing that they could not replicate the problem. The super-patient technician suggested that I add peripherals one at a time at home to see what the problem was. I only wish I'd done that last night!

Intricate Destiny

I just could not help myself (it's sad really).

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to retrieve my precious InDesign Install DVD from the jaws of my 'new' computer. It turns out that said computer has 'issues' and will be going back to the store tomorrow morning. The problem appears to be an unreliable power supply as when I tried to 'restart' - it turned off but did not turn back on. Turning it on manually did not work. Moving the large black box around a bit (and switching power outlets) let us turn it on *briefly* but it quickly turned itself off again while I was connecting the various bits to the 'box'. Overall I'm not exactly a happy camper - but at least my disc is safe.

Coming Unstuck

We all have days like this. They are the ones where nothing goes right and everything comes unstuck.

Today's Gratitude Item: This Apophysis Video Tutorial. It suffers from a lack of sound but has some really useful information / explanations. It's great for both beginners and relatively experienced artists.

Tuesday, January 07, 2014

Protein Factory

Dedicated to everyone who knows the difference between an alpha helix and a beta pleated sheet.

Today's Gratitude Item: The Digital Citizenship resources available over at Common Sense Media. I particularly like the various short videos that they have created, this one is particularly good mainly because of the catchy (but admittedly annoying) music. It's aimed at primary school children but my cunning plan involves showing it to older kids and getting them to discuss how it might be changed so that it is relevant to them.

DNA Sphere

The background turned out much better than expected.

Today's Gratitude Item: E-Books! For when it's too hot to go to the library. Being able to download some 'emergency' reading material is still something of a novelty.

Sunday, January 05, 2014

DNA Columns

Dedicated to all those geneticists out there.

Today's Gratitude Item: Remembering an old student's name! Running into past students is an occupational hazard and remembering their names qualifies as a minor miracle. Of course it's nice when old students do stop and chat - it's always interesting to see how far they have come (and how much they have matured).

Vine Arches

I wonder what the fruit of these vines will look like.

Today's Gratitude Item: Cool evenings! After the heat of today, the relative cool is sheer bliss. I shouldn't complain though - it's much worse in Australia - which might be another reason that living in NZ is simply wonderful.

Friday, January 03, 2014

Grate Marbles

As in a bunch of marbles on a grate of some sort.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting expert help figuring out the specs for the new computer that I'm getting. My current machine is getting passed its 'use by' date and needs replacing. Am looking quite forward to the new arrival.

Can you spot the 'x'?

Today's Gratitude Item: That Chrome automatically allows one to link bookmarks to a google account so that if you switch computers, you can still access your bookmarks. This little feature is extremely convenient.

Mosque Beads

Had fun with the background on this one - although it took a while to create.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally finishing this year's Yom HaShoah image. It will feature on this blog in due course. If you can't wait, you can see the image at the preceding link.
