Spring Tide on Side

As in it looks like an ocean made up of springs. Some head tilting may be required to 'get' this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: That I am not the only one at work who is stressed, tired and frustrated. This term feels endless and the only thing keeping us going is the fact that we are all in it together!

Old Fashioned Hearts

Tried out a new variation and got this. I like the woven hearts but am not too sure about the rather 'old fashioned' background.

*Spoiler Alert: The wikipedia article referenced below gives a concise breakdown of the movie's plot which effectively ruins any surprise so if you are planning on seeing Monument Men, maybe don't click on the link!

Today's Gratitude Item: Free parking when I went to watch 'Monument Men*' (with tickets that I won in a contest). I enjoyed the movie but if you are expecting great things because of media hype, prepare to be disappointed.

Triangle Tribulations

Named for the pain involved in creating this one. For something that is relatively simple it was both time consuming and frustrating to create. Happily it worked out in the end.

Today's Gratitude Item: Freshly baked spice muffins - yum!

Infinite Money

Look closely and you might be able to spot some fractal coinage in this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: Winning free movie tickets to "The Monuments Men". All I know is it has George Clooney in it and is about an art heist.

Sometimes they work out really well - and there is no point 'messing with perfection'. This was one of those times.

Today's Gratitude Item: An early morning wake-up call. If the phone had not rung, I'd have overslept! This does not happen often (thankfully) but have been exhausted and am just holding on until the weekend.

String Rays

The green in this one was stronger than expected - and that is not a good thing.

Today's Gratitude Item: My 'Moodle' notifications are working again. After nine weeks of silence, it's great to have the notifications back. For those who don't use Moodle, it's a system where kids can upload work and teachers can mark it - this is a gross simplification but work with me on it. Anyhow, the system is supposed to send a message when work is uploaded (so teachers know to mark said work) and it should also send messages to kids when it has been marked so they know to retrieve the feedback. Not having notifications working made my job much harder and I'm relieved it's *finally* been fixed.

Odd Arches

Usually arches are not vertical - but this time around, I made an exception.

Today's Gratitude Item: A 'universal' laptop charger which has a huge range of connectors and fits in almost any laptop. I left my charger at work by mistake and was running low on juice - the 'universal' charger saved the day.

Oh String!

As in loads of string with an "O" shape in it.

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to get my marking *mostly* under control. The bad news is that some of the assessments were super quick to mark because the kids had not done much. Marking dodgy work can be quite frustrating - especially when it becomes clear that some kids have not taken any notice of instructions / feedback. Some submitted identical work to their first (tragic) attempts. Needless to say, marking some of the submissions was like watching a particularly gruesome train smash - in slow motion. Others were more a case of 'please hold one while I bang my head against a wall'. Happily some did do a good job so all hope is not *yet* lost.

Flaming Mist

I could have called this one "zoom, zoom, zoom". Sometimes the interesting bits of fractals only appear on *very* close inspection.

Today's Gratitude Item: Remembering to fill up my car with gas before my 10c off per litre coupon ran out.

Pipe Dreams

I wonder what type of music comes out of these 'pipes'.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the weekend is finally here! It's been one of those crazy-busy weeks at school and I need some time off.

Tsunami Seed

In my world, this is what a Tsunami looks like when it is being born.

Today's Gratitude Item: That Maths exercise books are relatively cheap. Ended up buying a few of these for the junior class that I see once a cycle. There are a few students in that class who never have their books and don't do much work (they tell me their books are in their regular teacher's classroom). Am hoping that by having books available for them to work in (which will be kept in my cupboard), it will be easier to get them to do what they are meant to be doing.

Checkered Security

Reminded me of a rather wrinkled security blanket.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the audio CD I burned the other night worked when I tested it on a CD player.

Blue Moon, Gold Ocean

This one involved two separate fractals and a lot of patience.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having Windows Media player already on my computer. I needed to burn an audio CD (long story) and it was great not to have to find and download additional software to do the task.

Monday, March 17, 2014

Looking at this one 'close up' gives me the creeps. Not sure why.

Today's Gratitude Item: That our school mail server is back up and running and that none of my email got lost when things were 'broken' over the weekend. Some of the mail took a while to arrive but at least it finally made it to my inbox.

Cloth Whisper

Subtle silky cloth on a tiled background. Happily this one was relatively easy to create.

Today's Gratitude Item: Super quick review times on Shutterstock. Normally one waits several days for images to be reviewed. Today, my latest batch was reviewed in a matter of minutes.

Purim 5774

I loved this game as a kid and thought it would be cool way of recounting the story of Purim.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to make the most of this weekend's wild weather. In my world that means sleeping in and foregoing my usual walk (too wet and windy). Happily, the power stayed on and nothing has been damaged (touch wood).

Paradise Found

Experimented with a little used filter in PSP to come up with the background - was extremely pleased with the result.

Today's Gratitude Item: That a background pattern I developed last night for a client has been met with approval. Was worried about some aspects of the design and was surprised by the enthusiastic response.

Another Ocean

Sometimes oceans just appear in apophysis - I have no idea why this is. Even odder is the fact that I feel the need to render said fractal oceans.

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to create a screencast from my iPad. The process was far from simple. After a web search realised that I needed to mirror my iPad onto my laptop and then use good old faithful screen-cast-o-matic to make the recording. After a bit of trial and error, it finally worked. For those of you who are curious, "option 3" on the list at this blog did the trick.

Star Gate in Motion

Dedicated to all the "Star Gate" fans out there.

Today's Gratitude Item: The 8:15am meeting that we usually have on Thursday mornings is not happening this week. It's a small thing but right now, every little bit helps.

Tuesday, March 11, 2014

Golden Gate

The intricate 'metalwork' in this one bears closer scrutiny.

Today's Gratitude Item: GIMP's 'pixelate' feature (available via the 'blur' filter). This is a great tool for obscuring sensitive information in an image.

Monday, March 10, 2014

The Ring

Created with two identical fractals (one blue, one gold) and a fair bit of post processing.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the guest speaker at today's 'Teacher Only Day' was fairly entertaining. The apples provided at lunch were nice and crunchy too (an added bonus).

Sunday, March 09, 2014

Sensational Satellite

This one required a lot of 'tweaking'. Let's just say the little used 'Xaos' tab was involved.

Today's Gratitude Item: Deciding to go to work an hour later than usual tomorrow. Given that it's 'teacher only day', there is no compelling reason be on campus incredibly early (8:30 am rather than 7:30 am is the order of the day).

Toxic Spill

Sad as it may seem, sometimes pollution can be pretty.

Today's Gratitude Item: Sushi two days in a row - sometimes it's those small things that make our days that little bit nicer.

Gentle Agitation

Take an ordinary fractal and shake gently...

Today's Gratitude Item: A magnificent day off. I knew today was going to be great - and it was!

Thursday, March 06, 2014

Two Tone Tangle

Tried something a bit different with the background - happily it worked.

Today's Gratitude Item: Mid Term break is finally here! That means that even though tomorrow is Friday - I get to sleep in. With the days rapidly getting shorter, not having to be up before dawn is something worth celebrating.

Hidden Hope

I really like the diamond design that is sort of hidden in this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: Good timing. Managed to squeeze in an unexpected Video Conference with one of my VC students who is struggling. Hopefully the extra one-on-one time means that he will be able to get back on track. We were fortunate because getting time to use the gear outside of scheduled classes can be complicated.

Water on Fire

If you use your imagination, this one looks like water on fire (assuming one is OK with pink flames).

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding out that there is an easy way to extract images from Word files. Apparently, if you save the file as .html (unfiltered) - it will automatically extract the images from the file. This nice little trick will save me a bit of time in the future.

Confused Sunshine

Could be the sun trying to shine amidst some clouds and a blue sky?

Today's Gratitude Item: That it's a 'short week' this week. Am hanging out until Friday! Pity it's only Monday. Am so tired and overworked that I just want to curl up into a little ball and cry.

Sunday, March 02, 2014

Ice Bricks at Dawn

This one might be a bit too 'geometric' for some.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting my hands on a gorgeous dark blue (almost black) woven sun-hat which fits perfectly. Said sun hat was in the "we're basically giving these away" bin at the shops and cost the grand total of $2.50. Definitely the find of the week!

Ink Spill

Had fun making this one. No real ink was spilled in the process.

Today's Gratitude Item: *Finally* figuring out how to make the 'macro' setting work on my dad's camera. Right now I have a hate / hate relationship with that thing - usability is truly appalling.
