Winter Blossom

As in a pretty pink blossom that appeared on my screen in the middle of winter.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the weather cleared enough for a walk outside. Was getting a touch of 'cabin feature' from being cooped up inside.

Soft Spy Hole

A blur experiment with *sort of* worked.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my 'work mountain' is not as large as I thought it would be at this point in the term.

Spin Check

As in a pattern which is both spinning and checkered.

Today's Gratitude Item: eTV - it's a service available to schools in New Zealand at a relatively low price where television has been recorded and indexed. It is very easy to find material that has been shown on television, grab the bit one needs and share a link with students. I normally don't need to show bits of TV to my classes but a week ago 'Gadget Man' had a five minute piece where they tested the usability of two smart phones and this is very similar to what we get the kids to do when they learn about Usability. I now have the snippet safely saved for when we get to that topic.

Curl Back

This one is plain - but in a good way.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting home early. The planets aligned and both my colleague (who works at a different school) and I were 'free' last period so we could moderate student work during school hours instead of having to meet after school.

Web Magic

Was not expecting this to happen - but was very glad that it did.

Today's Gratitude Item: That according to this article drinking coffee has been linked to an increased life expectancy. Which is great because coffee is one my favourite things - especially on a cold winter morning.

Lantern Tile

Yet another fractal which reminds me of those paper lanterns we used to make as kids . In those days we did not have computers and had to use 'real' materials like paper, scissors and coloured pencils.

Today's Gratitude Item: Warm winter pajamas. It's that time of year again.

Very Weird Waves

So strange that they defy description.

Today's Gratitude Item: That our Hospitality students have started their 'Coffee' unit. This means being able to get proper coffee at school on a regular basis. Sometimes said coffee is even delivered free of charge :)

Flower Seal

Another variation on a theme.

Today's Gratitude Item: Two blissful days of not having to get up as early as usual. Weekends + heavy rain can be a good thing.

Shavuot 5775

Presenting a fun way to think about the 10 Commandments / Shavuot.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: A delightful morning tea :)

Rose Blanket

For someone who is not 'into' flowers (or pink) - I seem to be creating a lot of pink flowers. Weird.

Today's Gratitude Item: Starting a new blog to share 'my' *mostly* Computer Science comic strips with the wider community. The new blog won't be updated daily but I'm hoping it will be an easy way of keeping said cartoons in one easy to access place.

Deep Fragments

This one is probably a bit too dark - attempts to make it lighter were *clearly* unsuccessful.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally having time to make a cartoon to remind my students to avoid unnecessary duplication when they create their programs.

Moon Spiral

The only thing better than one spiral, is a background full of spirals.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to get almost instant, high quality feedback on a proposed assessment task from colleagues around the country. Needless to say, they identified a few 'issues' that needed to be resolved. Happily after going through the process I can be reasonably confident that the assessment will be suitable for my students.

String Spiral Sphere

I could not help myself!

Today's Gratitude Item: That most of my students seem to be enjoying our programming topic. It's the first time that I've taught it and things appear to be going well.

Endless Sparkling String

It sparkled / was pretty so it got rendered.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having made some progress on my 'plan' for teaching level 2 programming. The challenge is to come up with material that is suitable for those who have never programmed before that does not repeat material taught in my level 1 course (long story to do with class size and having no 'prerequisites' for the level 2 course).

Very Rough Hole

Was 'interesting' so it got rendered.

Today's Gratitude Item: This one is a double whammy. First my blog has just turned 12 (insert singing here). Second, our local library will remain open on Sundays after a previous decision to 'reduce the opening hours' to save money was overturned.

Contour Dawn

Not too sure about this one...

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to make significant in roads into the latest pile of marking. Let's just say that as the pile decreases, so do my stress levels :)

Sky Spiral

Was particularly pleased with the tiled spiral background.

Today's Gratitude Item: *Only* oversleeping by ten minutes this morning. Could not resist the temptation to silence my alarm for 'five more minutes' and promptly fell back asleep. Fortunately someone woke me before it got too late. Needless to say the days are noticeably shorter and getting up in the dark a mission.

Calming Weave

Tranquil is good.

Today's Gratitude Item: Quiet moments. When life gets busy, it's nice to be able to 'turn off' and have some 'quiet time'. Right now, those moments are rather brief but every little bit counts.

Pink Skein (version 2)

This is closely related to 'Pink Skein' - only nicer (in my opinion)

Today's Gratitude Item: A wet lunch. Normally I'm not a fan of the rain but in this case it meant not having to go out on duty and having an extra half an hour in which to do 'stuff'.

Monday, May 11, 2015

Dark Daze

Made on a cold winter day when bright colours just were not working for me.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finishing the level 1 Python eBook that is needed for our next topic. Said topic begins on Thursday! It should be fun to teach.

Sunday, May 10, 2015

Pink Skein

Reminded me of pink embroidery thread. The background is a GIMP experiment which turned out well.

Today's Gratitude Item: Spending time creating fractals. I should have been doing school work but opted to 'play' instead.

Infinite Ripple

The shape in the middle of this one is not quite an infinity symbol - but it's close enough.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding $5.00 when walking this morning. Somehow finding money never gets 'old'.

Friday, May 08, 2015

Zig Ripple

This one is a bit jarring but I like the 'zig zag' effect.

Today's Gratitude Item: An overcast day. It means being able to work in the car on the way home (my carpool buddy will be doing the driving). Weirdly I'm enjoying the damp weather - this has a lot to do with the fact that I don't need to be outdoors.

Another Ocean

Sometimes Apoophysis generates oceans. That's just the way it is.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting on top of marking (it's been a long week).

Wednesday, May 06, 2015

Scribble Disc

I really like the sense of motion in this one. It's a bit different to my usual offerings. In this case, 'different' is good.

Today's Gratitude Item: Fixing a really strange issue with flickr where two of my photos were not displaying. After asking for help in the forum, we discovered that rotating the photo (twice) fixed the problem. I have no idea what caused the issue or why rotating the images seems to solve it. This one is definitely being filed in the 'really weird IT issues' box.

Rip Tide Mosaic

This one was something of a surprise - sometimes surprises can be good.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a new school computer. The best thing about this process is that our tech guy installed all the software I need and cloned my 'D' drive so I did not have to spend a lot of time getting things back to 'normal'. The only problem is that my 'new' machine does not have a number pad (it does however have a smaller keyboard and is much lighter than the older model).

Line Illusion

Got very lucky with this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: That 'my' posters arrived and they look great. Even better is the fact that they will be distributed to my colleagues around the country :)

Sunday, May 03, 2015

Every had days like this?

Today's Gratitude Item: That backing up the 'D Drive' on my soon to be 'old' school computer did not take as long as feared.

Saturday, May 02, 2015

Sharp Spiral

I thought this one would work better than it did.

Today's Gratitude Item: A Saturday that was pretty much perfect :)

So Many Squares

The title really says it all

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting home earlier enough to go for a walk before it gets dark. Had PD (professional development) today which meant going in to the city instead of going to school. It also means getting home *much* earlier than usual.
