Sparkly Reminiscence

Similar designs have appeared on my screen before. This time I could not resist the urge to render.

Today's Gratitude Item: That 2016 has been a really good year for me. In the news too many articles tend to focus on the negative and this is a pity as if one is not careful, it can colour life (and not in a good way). Perhaps my new year's resolution for 2017 should be to avoid the news as it is depressing and generally sensationalist / inaccurate.

A Little Flaky

As in the 'blobs' could almost be snow flakes. The fact that they have eight sides instead of six is a minor detail.

Today's Gratitude Item: Three steps forward, two steps back. At least it was not the other way around (Translation: Slow progress is better than no progress).

Dizzy Texture

On very regular cobble stones.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting to play with a friend's brand new computer. She needed help setting it up and happily everything went really smoothly.

Wednesday, December 28, 2016

Ripple Ring

Presenting a 'what was I thinking' moment! This one should probably have been 'binned'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to make MS Access do my bidding. Am working on a database for a client and it's complicated but not all that hard.

Tuesday, December 27, 2016

Sideways Celebration

As in it looks like fireworks that have been rotated by 90 degrees.

Today's Gratitude Item: Crossword puzzles which have been providing some very enjoyable holiday entertainment.

Monday, December 26, 2016

Wind Play

I've seen this shape before - and every time it appears on my screen, it reminds me of the windmill toys I had as a child.

Today's Gratitude Item: A perfect day - it does not get much better than this...

Sunday, December 25, 2016

Ridge Ball

What can I say, occasionally spheres can be good.

Today's Gratitude Item: Making up for lost time (translation: finally overcame a touch of fractal 'burn out' and the images started to flow again).

Chanukah 5777

This image was made well in advance because it's never too early to play!

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: That Christmas (and New Year) fall on Sundays this year. The reason for this is that my all-time favourite sushi shop will only be closed for two days this week (and next week). It is usually a lot worse at this time of year.

Friday, December 23, 2016

Trip Hazard

As in if this were a side walk, tripping would be inevitable.

Today's Gratitude Item: Delicious rhubarb cake made by a client / friend.

Thursday, December 22, 2016

Wall Flowers

Somehow I thought this one would turn out better than it did...

Today's Gratitude Item: Making progress on the search for a venue for dance camp 2018 - it turns out that planning *way* in advance is a good idea in this case.

Wednesday, December 21, 2016

Dappled Depths

At least this one is not too busy.

Today's Gratitude Item: The last dance class for the year. This is always a fun event and tonight was no exception. As usual, a good time was had by all.

Tuesday, December 20, 2016

Festive Relief

The brass star made this one worth rendering.

Today's Gratitude Item: Winning a scholarship for some study that I'm planning on doing next year. It does not cover all of the costs but it is a great start.

Monday, December 19, 2016

Ornamental Flower

This is the result of quite a bit of experimenting. It's a pity that it is so similar to previous works.

Today's Gratitude Item: The microwave. It's ideal for reheating tea that gets cold because one has been severely side-tracked.

Sunday, December 18, 2016

Left Over Recycling

Was having a 'magpie' moment with this one. As in it was shiny so it go rendered.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting 14 rather tricky gifts wrapped. It took most of the day and I'm glad that not so small job is done.

Saturday, December 17, 2016

Orb Suspended

Tried something different in Apo and this was the result.

Today's Gratitude Item: Making significant progress on wrapping end-of-year 'stuff' for dance on Wednesday.

Friday, December 16, 2016

Shield Sculpture

A variation on a theme which was pretty enough to render.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting to Carey Park (and back again) without getting too lost. Traffic was 'interesting' at times but overall it was not too bad.

Thursday, December 15, 2016

Familiar Unknown

For some reason this one is rather unsettling.

Today's Gratitude Item: That setting up google analytics for a client was much easier than anticipated.

Wednesday, December 14, 2016

Ripple Crescent

Presenting yet another ocean / wave image.

Today's Gratitude Item: Summer holidays are here! This might be as good as it gets :)

Tuesday, December 13, 2016

Hole Splat

Random fractal - random name.

Today's Gratitude Item: Teamwork and finally managing to make some rather cool key rings for colleagues whose last day at school is tomorrow. This was only possible due to the dedication, expertise and patience of my 'multi materials' colleague. Happily he is still with us next year :)

Monday, December 12, 2016

Half Fern

It's more square than a natural fern. Gotta love artistic license.

Today's Gratitude Item: That prize giving is finally over! Creating the slide show presentation and associated materials was a lot more arduous than one might assume. I keep asking why it has to be this hard...

Sunday, December 11, 2016

Square Skyline

Was pleased with this one. It's filed under 'simple but nice'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding a perfect gift bag (right size, right colour) in our 'too pretty to throw away we should try and recycle this' stash.

Saturday, December 10, 2016

Fern Spike

I zoomed into 'Half Fern' (which will feature here in due course) - a lot.

Today's Gratitude Item: The Internet on my 'main' machine started working after a couple of false starts. It's always a bit unnerving when that happens. The connection was fine as my iPad was on-line but my 'big' machine seemed to want an extended Shabbat.

Friday, December 09, 2016

Dusk Decking

Reminded me of wooden planks that are commonly used for decking.

Today's Gratitude Item: Surviving a 'cover' where brownies were made (it was a Food Tech class). Things went much better than feared even though some of the results were, quite literally, half baked.

Thursday, December 08, 2016

Measuring Up

Created for a colleague (long story). Let's just say that I would not do this sort of thing for just anyone :)

Today's Gratitude Item: Being able to leave school early to get to an after school meeting.

Wednesday, December 07, 2016

Made on one of 'those' days.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting creative with my planning. It's a long story but said creativity saved quite a bit of time. It will be interesting to see if anyone in senior management actually reads said planning. I have a cunning way of figuring out if said planning has been read which has a lot to do with Caesar Ciphers and nothing to do with monitoring whether a document has been opened.

Tuesday, December 06, 2016

Mystic Flower

It's either a flower or an airplane propeller. It all depends on how you look at it.

Today's Gratitude Item: Some posters that slightly enhanced some of my student's work turned out really well. They will go up on my wall in the near future.

Monday, December 05, 2016

Fire and Ice

Filed somewhere between 'interesting' and 'what was I thinking'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Seven *school* days to go. The kids are getting restless and I am eagerly anticipating the summer break.

Sunday, December 04, 2016

Just Messing

Was messing around when this happened. It's kind of messy too - hence the name.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally being able to reconnect to a website which needed updating but had not been updated in a while. It turns out that the 'www' in front of the domain name mattered in this case. Live and learn.

Saturday, December 03, 2016

Sand Diamond

Apparently I now have a 'thing' for strong geometric shapes.

Today's Gratitude Item: The little guy in the image below. His feet can be pulled out to reveal a 4GB memory stick and he was given to me at CS4HS (a brilliant event for Computer Science teachers that was held in Christchurch and finished yesterday).

Thursday, December 01, 2016

Check Patch

Took a while to find colours that 'worked'. That's pretty much the story of my life.

Today's Gratitude Item: Knowing what recursion is. It turns out that this concept becomes very useful when learning about formal languages (which are a 'thing' in Computer Science).

Wednesday, November 30, 2016

Flower Net

As in a 'flower' caught in a net.

Today's Gratitude Item: A really good day at CS4HS. Am looking forward to 'more of the same' tomorrow.

Tuesday, November 29, 2016

3D Lattice

Strange things happened on post-processing. The 3D effect was not nearly as obvious in the original image.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having Internet access in my room at CS4HS. This is the first time in three years that this has been the case and it's wonderful.

Monday, November 28, 2016

Very Bright Idea

Perfect for those cold winter days when one forgets what the sun looks like.

Today's Gratitude Item:Finally finished updating the eBook that I will use to teach 'basic' databases. Said databases are 'basic' in that they only contain one table so the design is very simple. They will be implemented using php / sql which is where things become both fun and interesting.

Rule #10 (revisited)

This one is on my classroom wall. I had one which says 'Just do it' but one of my students plagiarised and then quoted the rule. This one should encourage them to be more sensible.

Today's Gratitude Item: Learning how to wrap hexagonal boxes neatly without using a massive amount of wrapping paper.

Saturday, November 26, 2016

Another one for my classroom wall. The old 'e' in my alphabet series wasn't working for us.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding a relatively old book by Daniel Silva that I had not yet read. Like other books by this author, The English Girl is a very satisfying read.

Friday, November 25, 2016

Subtle Love

If you look really carefully, you might be able to spot the string hearts in this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: A rainy day. My carpool buddy was driving and this meant that for once, I could work in the car both to and from school. This gave me about 80 minutes of extra time which is huge. Normally working on the way home is impossible due to the angle of the sun.

Thursday, November 24, 2016

Dappled Ocean

Adding some 'perspective' and playing with a variant that distorts everything slightly resulted in this.

Today's Gratitude Item: Roadworks have been happening on my regular route home which has meant taking an alternate route for the last month or so. Happily, said roadworks are pretty much complete and today, for the first time in ages, the commute home was back to 'normal'.

Wednesday, November 23, 2016

Space Walk

As in a tunnel in space.

Today's Gratitude Item: That our 'report writing' requirements at school are a lot less onerous than they have been in the past. Happily, school has gone with the 'less is more' approach.

Tuesday, November 22, 2016

Many Moons

This one did not turn out quite as well as hoped. The fact that the image is slightly skew means that looking at it for any length of time can make one feel a bit off balance.

Today's Gratitude Item: Not having to 'cover' for anyone today. With my senior students on exam leave, I was expecting to get at least one 'cover' - happily today this was not the case which gave me extra time to create resources. Needless to say, this is my 'make hay while the sun shines' period.

Monday, November 21, 2016

Stripe 90

Named because the pattern on the narrow bars is at right angles to the pattern on the wide bars.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the rest of my moderation came back and NZQA is 'highly confident' in my ability to assess students against the various standards. Needless to say, this is great news as it means that I am on the right track when it comes to assessing kids.

Sunday, November 20, 2016

Alien Fence

This one could be a close up of a fence. Sort of.

Today's Gratitude Item: Making significant progress on the eBook that I'm currently creating. It's taking a while but there is light at the end of the tunnel (hopefully said light is not an on-coming train).

Saturday, November 19, 2016

Modern Ancient

A modern depiction of an ancient symbol.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting to read one of Jeffrey Archer's more recent books (Cometh the Hour). This was a rare treat as most of the books that I read are not nearly as well crafted.

Friday, November 18, 2016

From Ashes

The ashes in question are still glowing.

Today's Gratitude Item: That our 'intermittent' internet problem was mostly resolved by the time I taught my junior Mathematics class.

Thursday, November 17, 2016

Star Born

This one turned out better than expected which was a lovely surprise.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting an increased travel subsidy for an upcoming visit to Christchurch. Air fares were more expensive than expected but the event organisers found a sponser who has donated extra money which will cover most of the cost of getting down there. This was a very pleasant, unexpected surprise.

Wednesday, November 16, 2016

Deconstructed Blossom

This one was a flower before I added a final transform and changed everything.

Today's Gratitude Item: One of my nearest and dearest coming through a rather important health check with flying colours. Said check was in the 'routine' but 'not fun at all' category. We are all glad that said check is over with no problems.

Tuesday, November 15, 2016

Screen glitter

Cyan and blue on their own are often quite ugly. Put them together with sufficient black and the result could look something like this...

Today's Gratitude Item: Really great 'professional development'. Spent the day at a 'Best Practice Workshop' looking at subject specific material that was incredibly helpful. This made a wonderful change from some of the other less useful PD that has been foisted upon us during the year.

Monday, November 14, 2016

Floral Compulsion

This is similar to other works but I felt compelled to render it.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being far, far away from the recent earthquakes. Thoughts go out to all of those who are too close to the action for comfort!

Sunday, November 13, 2016

Fern Arch

This one was a lot of work for a slightly disappointing result. Never mind.

Today's Gratitude Item: Fractal inspiration! It's been a long time since I created new work and the break appears to have been beneficial. The only downside is that I did not do any school work at all on the weekend. Never mind.

Saturday, November 12, 2016

Weird Hole

Created on one of 'those' days.

Today's Gratitude Item: Figuring out how to make bagels look good, even if they are not being covered with sesame seeds. Normally sesame seeds are part of the 'deal' and they cover a multitude of sins. This time around, some 'seedless' bagels were required which meant figuring out a way to ensure that said bagels looked 'pretty'.
