Purple Network

Another 'almost 3D' effort.

Today's Gratitude Item: A great turn out at dance. We revisited some older dances and things went remarkably well. It is weird when one's body just knows what to do - for some of the older stuff, it took my brain a while to catch up with good old fashioned 'muscle memory'.

Fern Architecture

Somehow this one did not turn out to be as spectacular as I'd hoped. I'd say it was 'pretty ordinary' (as in quite pretty but very ordinary).

Today's Gratitude Item: Completing 'that' resource and getting my marking done. Having three extra days off school has been wonderful. Having a holiday would have been nice but at least I am *almost* up-to-date on 'stuff'.

Maybe this one should have been called 'Intricate Braid'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Lime green headphones with a built in microphone. Said headphones are compact and perfect for school. Even better, they were on sale :)

Sunday, March 27, 2016

As in a Mandelbrot with an 'x'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being on schedule with my 'database resource creation'. For the most part the explaining / recording has gone well. Of course the true test will be when my students try and follow along. Needless to say, having a whole five days off school to get this done has been invaluable.

Pipe Dream

This one looks horrible 'small' - it's quite nice when viewed in a larger size.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the flag debate is over. Whilst I think changing the flag was actually a good idea the 'new' design was quite ugly so the fact that we kept the status quo is not the end of the world. Having said that, it is a pity that New Zealand is not yet ready to abandon the Union Jack (insert deep sigh here). I wonder when we (as a country) will finally 'grow up' and cut the apron strings with 'mother' England.

Standing Out

The grey scale parts were originally extremely bright. Too bright in fact - so I played. A lot. Sadly the result is not all that great.

Today's Gratitude Item: Making quite a bit of progress on my databases resource. This involves re-creating a 'complex' database and slowly explaining each step so that my students can learn the required skills. Time is of the essence with this one - the plan is to have the entire resource packaged up and completed before class on Wednesday. *It might be a close thing*.

Tidal Inteference

At first glance, this one is quite subtle - viewed in large size the detail becomes apparent.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being at the start of a five day long weekend (aka: Easter / midterm break).

Purim 5776

This one was made easier by the fact that both the logo and mask were available as public domain images. The 'ink' at the bottom is not accidental.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Still having power. The extremely windy weather has meant that quite a few homes are 'going without' until things get fixed tomorrow.

Sun Kissed

As in sun kissed waves.

Today's Gratitude Item: Fresh coffee muffins and fresh coffee muffin batter :)

Monday, March 21, 2016

Magic Ocean

Am wondering whether some of the 'magic' went slightly awry on this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: Making some progress on creating a resource for my level 3 database topic. It's been a very long journey but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Here's hoping that said 'light' is not an oncoming train.

Curve Appeal

It's like 'curb appeal' but for fractals.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting a database that I was working on to fully co-operate. It's a long story but after several hours I managed to fix two 'small' problems. It's simple when one knows how.

The Tierazon experiment continues...

Today's Gratitude Item: A lighting fast review on Shutterstock. Happily all the images that I posted were accepted. Here's hoping they sell!

Blue Fern

Ferns of all colours are good.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting reasonably fast at checking my students' websites. With 49 in the group and frequent checkpoints, it was a matter of 'the quick or the overwhelmed'. At least *most* of the kids are working hard. The threat of making contact home is remarkably effective (especially as said threat is not 'empty').

This one reminds me of one of those fair ground rides which can lead to vertigo. Not for the fainthearted.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding some cool inter-actives / games which will help my Maths students get their heads around distance / time graphs. Sourcing suitable material is always a bit of a challenge as I need to find material that works well on iPads and other PC's. This time around, the 'tablet enabled' activity works well on an iPad but on a PC, there is an ugly 'preview' notice. Happily there is a very similar 'free' activity which works well on PC's but is flash based so it won't run easily on an iPad.

Sparkly Lace

In retrospect, am not convinced that pink was the best colour choice for this one...

Today's Gratitude Item: Two surprise dancers. As in our dance group numbers were bolstered by a visit from two dancers who live up in Whangarei. We usually get to catch up once a year at national dance camp so seeing them today was a really nice bonus.

Sparkly Pink

The original fractal was much brighter and featured pink and green bits. Suffice it to say, this is a big improvement.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding out how to reference a file that is in a parent folder in html / php. It's all easy once you know how.

Sharp Spikes

There is nothing gentle about this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to see the humour amidst the craziness that is a typical Monday. My car pool buddy loves Mondays almost as much as I do (which is to say, not at all). This morning in the car she was bemoaning her hectic schedule. It went like this: "Meeting before school, teach five classes (no non-contacts), meeting after school". To which, in the best poker playing tradition, I was tempted to reply: "I'll see your meeting before school, five classes in a row, meeting after school and raise you a duty half of morning tea" (at which point I would then have yelled out "I win!"). Weirdly, I don't think she would have found this all that funny. So I kept my *brilliant* reply to myself and just laughed on the inside.

Spiked Scales

This is what happens when you take the Mandelbrot equation and play with it. A lot!

Today's Gratitude Item: Being ready for Monday. I'm not exactly looking forward to it but at least my marking is up-to-date.

Ripple Canyon

It's pretty enough but sadly nothing grows here.

Today's Gratitude Item: Cooler weather. Walking outside has become a pleasure as it is not too hot and not too cold. Next step - autumn colours, shorter days and mixed feelings about the coming winter.

Floating Bubbles

Here is another of those 'interesting enough' images.

Today's Gratitude Item: Friday afternoon joy - ie: the feeling one has at the start of a weekend when one's 9th grade Maths test have all been marked.

Thursday, March 10, 2016

Sometimes fractals start to come apart at the seams. This is what it looks like when that happens.

Today's Gratitude Item: A busy but ultimately successful day. This is much better than having a busy day where nothing works as expected.

Sonic Web

The more you stare at this one, the more you will see...

Today's Gratitude Item: Figuring out how to use php to make a carousel for a website where the images are taken directly from a folder (rather than having to be manually inputted). It took a while to get there but the satisfaction when it worked was immense.

Behind bars

In this case, being behind bars can be a good thing.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally being able to use the pro version of screencast-o-matic again. My school's site license expired on Friday and it took until today to get it fixed. This might not seem like a big deal but when one uses software routinely, not having easy access to it can be incredibly frustrating.

Silver Fern

Had a lot of fun creating the background for this one. It was easier than one might think.

Today's Gratitude Item: Surviving Monday! It was one of those insanely busy days where nothing went wrong but there was 'too much' going on.

Sunday, March 06, 2016

Green Spike

Another of those 'simple is good' images.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a massive amount of really tedious marking done. It feels great to have it out of the way.

Saturday, March 05, 2016

Infinite Lace

As in the 'lace' on the extreme left of the image keeps on going.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding a $5.00 note on my walk this morning. Not so good for the person that lost it but fun for me.

Friday, March 04, 2016

The diamonds only appeared when a particular colouring algorithm was applied.

Today's Gratitude Item: Figuring out how to *sort of* solve a colleague's problem. It took a while but getting a partial solution to a difficult problem was way more satisfying than it should have been.

Thursday, March 03, 2016

Geometric Slate

The more subdued colours somehow work with the design. Unexpected but in a good way.

Today's Gratitude Item: That marking my 11th Grader's Math tests did not take nearly as long as feared.

Wednesday, March 02, 2016

Am still wondering whether rendering this one was a good idea. It's quite bland but that could be a good thing if one's desktop is quite busy.

Today's Gratitude Item: *Just* managing to keep my head above water. Things are insanely busy at work and with assessment season starting, it's going to get worse before it gets better. I think I need to prioritise more efficiently (translation: if it's not both urgent and important, it won't get done).

Hail Half

The pattern reminded me of the rings one might see when cutting a large hailstone in half.

Today's Gratitude Item: My level 1 students are now pretty much 'trained' and most know how to submit work electronically. It's nice to be at the point where everyone 'gets' the necessary routines (the start of the year is always a bit tricky in that regard).
