Fuzzy Geometry

Can anyone spot the hexagon in this one?

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting unanticipated help from a colleague at another school. It's a very long, reasonably complicated story but it turned out well in the end.

Barrel Fuzz

These started out as squares but when they were 'tilted', the barrel shape appeared. Cool.

Today's Gratitude Item: Skipping a pointless meeting. The time was used to get an impressive amount of work done and I doubt that anyone even noticed my absence.

Snow Suprise

As the title suggests, this one was unexpected.

Today's Gratitude Item: A really fun night out. Went to a 'trivial pursuits' fund raiser and it was great. Even though our team did not win, we had a lot of fun. Happily we did not come last (we were firmly in the middle of the field).

Interlocking Squares

It took ages to find a suitable gradient for this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the weather cleared *briefly* this afternoon - it was nice to be able to walk without fear of getting drenched.

Square Cubed

Somehow the mosaic pattern on this one just works.

Today's Gratitude Item: The weekend is here and my marking is up-to-date. Let's just say this is a wonderful feeling.

Great Ball of Fire

Naming this one was easy.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting a 'proper' curtain rail for the beaded curtain at school. Said curtain is now just slightly off the floor and should continue to do a good job of keeping pigeons outside my classroom whilst letting the kids come in.

Glow Patch

Took a while to generate the background...

Today's Gratitude Item: Finishing a large amount of marking (ie: 41 essays for a fairly major assessment - most of the essays were well over 1000 words). It took a while but getting it all done is a massive weight off my mind.

Sea Scales

Sometimes when one 'plays', oceans / waves occur. For some reason, this is a frequent occurrence.

Today's Gratitude Item: Making a small dent in my massive marking pile. At least it is progress of a sort.

Life Spike

As in green and spiky.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my students 'caught' a funny (but serious) error in one of my eBooks before I shared the resource with the wider community. This meant that I was able to fix the problem before too much damage was done. In one of my teaching videos, I'd annotated a shortcut which involved pushing <ctrl><shift><F10> , only a critical 'f' was missing from the word 'shift'. What can I say? It happens. My response when they reported the error? Hysterical laughter. There was not much else that I could do at that point. At least they will remember the shortcut.

Soft String Spiral

As usual, saw the spiral and just had to render it...

Today's Gratitude Item: Being left in peace (which meant having time to revisit an eBook that I need for tomorrow). After a very long day, said eBook is just about ready.

Two Candles

This was easier to make than one might think.

Today's Gratitude Item: Making significant progress on updating my level 1 programming eBook. It will be interesting to see if it is ready for Monday.

Friday, May 20, 2016

As in these tiles don't quite line up.

Today's Gratitude Item: Marking that did not take long at all. My 9th graders has a Math test and it was very quick to mark. It's great when that happens.

Funky Weirdness

It's very bright and I'm not too sure whether it was a good idea to begin with.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting a Python program that I was working on to co-operate. Said program includes a GUI but is fairly basic - having said that, getting it working has helped me to understand a few key ideas that I'll be teaching my students in due course.

Simple Squares

Dedicated to all those who are fans of the colour orange.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my school's mail server is currently down. It means not being bothered by student / colleague emails (#SilverLining).

Pipe Dream Revisited

This one took ages to create - the effort was worth it though.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting home early from school - which has translated into finally getting to have an early night. All going well I'll be asleep by 9:30pm.

Monday, May 16, 2016

Hot and Cold

I like the *almost* symmetry of this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting a piece of code to work correctly. There was a very small but deeply annoying bug that got ironed out today. Today is *sort of* special for another reason. It's my blogiversary - as in this journal has been going since 16th May 2004!

Fever Spiral

The original was red / blue - the name stuck, the colours were changed (trust me when I say that is for the best).

Today's Gratitude Item: Finishing my marking and getting my Maths lessons for the upcoming week prepared. None of this was fun but at least it is done now. Even though we are only starting the third week of the term, I already need a holiday (it's after midnight most nights as there is far too much to do and far too little time to do it in).

Autumn Synergy

Definitely a very bright idea...

Today's Gratitude Item: Being black listed by the Jehovah's witnesses. As in when they come to our street they avoid our house. It's odd as we don't have large *shut* gates or scary dogs. This could have something to do with the fact that the last time they came (literally), my mother invited them to bible study and really challenged some of their ideas. I guess they didn't like it all that much.

Empire State

As in it looks like the building. Don't see the resemblance? Try squinting.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting home in time to blog before Shabbat comes in.

Thursday, May 12, 2016

Square Stairs

Simple but fun.

Today's Gratitude Item: Almost being at the end of my least favourite topic in my level 1 course. I'm looking forward to next week when the amount of marking that I need to do will diminish quite a bit (even though it is the calm before the storm).

Yom Hazikaron & Yom Ha'atzmaut 5776

It turns out that combining two images into one takes twice as long.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting the lock on one of my cupboards fixed. My key suddenly stopped working last week but it is fixed now. Apparently, sometimes locks need to be serviced as bits can wear out. You learn something new every day.

Magic Eye

Happily once rendered, this one did not disappoint.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding out how to see what a site's mobile version looks like using Chrome's Developer tools. Knowing this has proved to be very useful for my 10th grade students.

Wild Thorns

Thought the thorns would be more 'wild' on this one but they were smoothed out on rendering. Am still pleased with how this one turned out though.

Today's Gratitude Item: Code Anywhere - this is a very cool site which will potentially solve a number of problems and make life just a bit easier for both me and my students.

Branch Spiral

A nice surprise that reminded me of a tree (in winter).

Today's Gratitude Item: That a number of my colleagues gave me feedback on an assessment task that I have written for my senior students. This is an important part of the assessment writing process but I did not realise they had left feedback until this evening (long story). Happily, the feedback was useful.

Dawn Scaffold

I love geometry! Especially when it looks like this...

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting to the end of a really long (and insanely busy) week.

Thursday, May 05, 2016

Repetitive Ripples

Struggled with the colouring of this one and am still not sure that the result is all it could be.

Today's Gratitude Item: Taking time to 'recharge'. Was exhausted after school today and ended up taking a much needed late afternoon nap. All I can say is that not being tired anymore is an amazing feeling.

Wednesday, May 04, 2016

5776 Yom HaShoah

This one contains over 1900 names of those who perished in the Holocaust. The names are from the Central Database of Shoah Victims' Names. The names are clearly visible in the 'original' version of the image.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

The huge version is available at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting home early enough to be able to walk outside before it got too dark. Finding $1.20 in the process was a nice bonus.

Midnight Hammock

Despite the holes, this looks quite cosy.

Today's Gratitude Item: A while back I called 'dibs' on a 'standing desk' that our senior learning team no longer needed. Said furniture, whilst extremely useful, is also rather expensive and it was not in my budget for this year. Happily, it was 'spare' and now it's mine. Life in my classroom has just gotten even better than it was before.

Monday, May 02, 2016

This is in the 'if only it was real' category. I'd imagine it would be fun to play with.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the beaded curtain I have rigged on one of my classroom doors might just work. This despite said curtain being too far off the ground. It will be interesting to see if this is a viable long term solution.

Which Way is Up?

Is the stylised bug moving up or down?

Today's Gratitude Item: Making the most of the last two weeks. The 'to do' list is still rather long but it has not been for lack of trying...
