Rule #15

There's a song about this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: Loads of books to read. I love the holidays :)

Rule #11

The trick is in choosing what knowledge to acquire.

Today's Gratitude Item: The first 'real' day of summer. I know that summer officially starts in December but the weather today was glorious - so much so that walking in short sleeves *outside* was the only sensible option.

Rule #12

I really hate it when people attribute the results of hard work to 'luck'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally managing to create two metallic dreidels using Blender. Having to relearn how to use the software was not exactly fun but it was quicker the second time around.

It's Not Rocket Science

I often say this to my students - especially when they overthink a problem.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting a problematic vector accepted on Shutterstock. It's a long story involving some unfortunate cropping decisions and a rejection reason which literally made no sense.

Rule #6

This one really applies to kids who don't try at all. If they do try, they will eventually succeed (even if a bit of failure is necessary first).

Today's Gratitude Item: Needing a hat rather than an umbrella on my afternoon walk (frustratingly I had an umbrella but had left my hat at home).

Do it!

This one is not an official rule in my class. It came close but one of my students plagiarised and then quoted this 'rule' as an excuse. So it got changed to 'Just because you can, doesn't mean you should'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Daylight saving! I love the fact that it gets dark later now. Not only does it mean that winter is officially 'done' - it also means being able to walk outside 'later' if desired.

Rule #7

I'm pretty sure I've made something quite similar to this in the past...

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting home safely after an enjoyable night out that involved going to see a friend perform in an amateur theater production.

Rule #8

This could be good advice for life in general.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being on holiday! For the first time this year I'm not worrying about having to urgently create resources for next term. Right now, life is very, very good :)

Rule #1

Advice for students! I wish more of mine would adhere to this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: InDesign's 'update link' feature. It made my life easier today in that something that could have taken a significant amount of time was easily achieved.

Wednesday, September 21, 2016

Advice for life in general and Computer Science in particular. Not officially one of my rules but not a bad statement either.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting my hands on a working staple gun. It made putting up posters showcasing student work really easy and pretty much guarantees that said posters will stay firmly affixed to the wall. Sadly the staple gun was on loan only and has now been returned to its rightful owner.

Rule #4

This one applies to both essay writing and creating program code.

Today's Gratitude Item: An unexpected 'thank you' which involved more than nice words :)

Monday, September 19, 2016

Rule #3

Getting kids to comment their code has become something of an obsession.

Today's Gratitude Item: An 'easy' Monday. Got loads done thanks to our seniors being busy with exams. It made a nice change from my normally frenetic Mondays.

Rule # 2

This is 'rule #2' in my classroom. It's on the wall and is part of a larger series of 26 (there is one for each letter of the alphabet). The reason for this rule is that it's amazing how many kids don't bring their chargers to class and then waste time because their device is 'dead'. These days kids tend to quote the rule to me when someone breaks it so I guess it's working...

Today's Gratitude Item: Scoring 8192 in the game 2048. Needless to say, this is quite a tricky thing to achieve - so much so, that a screenshot and virtual celebrations were in order.

Puzzle Cloth

The quote is not original. I read it in the context of choosing a suitable font for design projects but liked it for it's literal meaning.

Today's Gratitude Item: Figuring out how to remove unwanted hyperlink information from an inDesign file.

Mosaic Reflections

Reflecting this one made a big difference. The background worked better than expected too.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting loads done! Not having to teach seniors has been a nice change although the day was still incredibly busy.

Purple Pallete

For some reason, I've always found squares of colour appealing.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my long awaited webinar went reasonably well despite a somewhat temperamental internet connection. A big part of me is glad that it is 'done' as it took a fair bit of time to prepare the various resources.

Created a long time ago after getting some bad news. This was one of those times where the screen reflected my emotions. It's weird when that happens. Looking back I can't even remember what the bad news was.

Today's Gratitude Item: That things at school are a lot calmer. This has much to do with the fact that our seniors have their practice exams and are not required to attend class for the next five school days. I'm looking forward to the break as it will give me time to catch up on the 'other stuff' that has accumulated.

Cultivated String

As in the pattern reminded me of cultivated fields (only these fields were in the sky).

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a small raise. Extra money is always nice :)

Monday, September 12, 2016

On Edge

Made on the same day as 'unsettled'. This one is a bit unnerving.

Today's Gratitude Item: That sometimes lemons turn into cake! The transformation was achieved when I gave lemons to a colleague and she used them to make her very special lemon cake which she kindly shared.

Sunday, September 11, 2016

Woven Water Discs

As is so often the case, exploring an 'old' variation resulted in something rather 'new'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a new popcorn maker. The old one was starting to have 'issues' so a new machine was in order. Happily the new model works slightly differently and when I trialed it, the 'pop rate' was a surprising improvement on the old machine.

Royal Masonry

This is ornate enough to appear on a castle.

Today's Gratitude Item: A beautiful view. Last week there was a 'grand opening' of a 'look out' that has been over a year in the making. Happily the long wait was worth it.

Friday, September 09, 2016

Ghost Wave

Combines a spiral and wave - it might be a bit 'chunky' for some.

Today's Gratitude Item: Going home "early". Today was a half day due to a paid Union Meeting. I'm not a member (in part because I find the associated meetings rather tedious) - so I had three blissful hours to work on a resource and now I can go home and enjoy an early start to the weekend.

Checkered Classic

Turning this one 45 degrees made quite a difference.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having classes to teach for the first three periods tomorrow. This guarantees that I won't be asked to cover for anyone (and thus lose my non-contact time). Turns out relievers are very thin on the ground at the moment.

Wednesday, September 07, 2016

Circle Point

Simple but hopefully effective.

Today's Gratitude Item: That installing Word Press plugins is generally straight forward. The tricky part is finding a plug-in that works well for a given situation.

Tuesday, September 06, 2016

Satellite Spiral

As in reminded me of a satellite reception dish.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having a spare set of small headphones in my computer bag. I got them as a 'freebie' a while back and they came in handy today.

Monday, September 05, 2016

Mason Flower

A flower made from purple stone bits.

Today's Gratitude Item: That a rather troublesome leaking pipe has been fixed. Plumbers are a wonderful thing :)

Sunday, September 04, 2016

Flower Web

Changing the orientation of this one both improved it and made it slightly unnerving at the same time.

Today's Gratitude Item: Making modest headway on my 'to do' list. I'm mostly up-to-date with my marking and am even *sort of* looking forward to tomorrow.

Saturday, September 03, 2016

Curve Branch

They look like a bunch of flowers but they are not!

Today's Gratitude Item: Solving a tricky problem. One of my students emailed me his broken code and I managed to fix it. There were multiple issues with it which tell me exactly where he is in terms of understanding how to code in Python. Being able to hunt down and fix all the mistakes was remarkably satisfying. It also gave me an insight into how to teach the topic better next time around.

Hollow Ring Riples

Simple and very easy to make.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my classroom was not vandalised. Some of my colleagues were not so lucky - the arrived at school today to discover smashed windows and glass all over the place. The police were really good and thanks to a quick response and our school's security footage, they have caught the perpetrators.

Space Lace

This one is either 'funky' or 'weird' depending on one's perspective.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting approval from school to go to CS4HS in Christchurch at the end of November. This is possibly the highlight of my year and getting to go again this year is really exciting.
