Ice Mountain

This one looked a lot more ordinary before I started playing.

Today's Gratitude Item: An extra hours sleep in the morning courtesy of the end of daylight saving. Whilst I will miss the long evenings, getting up when it is still dark outside is one of my least favourite things.

Pesach Sameach

My dad came up with the idea for this one. I chose the manufacturer name. This product does not actually exist (as far as I know) but it would be fun if it did.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: A brilliant day! Being on holiday is the best, even if one does end up doing a fair bit of schoolwork.

Winter's Coming...

The 'Game of Thrones' reference is not accidental. Weirdly, I have never watched Game of Thrones.

Today's Gratitude Item: The start of a five-day weekend / break. Whilst I have plenty of school work to do, having a bit of a break teaching is a wonderful thing.

Textured Daze

Revisiting old favourites is always a good idea.

Today's Gratitude Item: A very useful webinar. Whilst some of the material was not exactly 'news', there was a lot there that was both interesting and helpful.

Light in Darkness

The shape reminded me of a candle flame. Sort of.

Today's Gratitude Item: Loads of fresh, hot raisin bread! This is something I will miss quite badly during Pesach. If there was a contest between matzos (which I like) and raisin bread, the raisin bread would win every time.

Out of Practice

It's been a while since I've had time to create images - and it showed.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding a fast way to force the songs in my iTunes albums to sort themselves alphabetically. Said solution was not obvious and required a bit of research and some inspired guessing on my part.

Flex Connect

As in a flexible connected network.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding both a 'Teaching' and 'Dancing Video' for a new dance that was recommended by my counterpart down in Tauranga.

Saturday, March 24, 2018

Circuit Flower

I experimented quite a bit until this appeared.

Today's Gratitude Item: Perfect weather! Which in Auckland means the rain holding off until after my morning walk and then setting in for the rest of the day.

Hot Wire

This one is very different to 'the norm'. I think I like it...

Today's Gratitude Item: A really good day 'out' - mostly because it involved meeting interesting people and an interesting project.

Thursday, March 22, 2018

Named for the fact that this one features the 'horseshoe' variation. When it comes to art, luck has nothing to do with it.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having an extra week to help my students prepare for their programming assessment.

Simple Geometry

Which became a bit complicated on post processing.

Today's Gratitude Item: Surprise sushi for dinner. Usually I don't like surprises but this was the exception to the rule.

Tuesday, March 20, 2018

Queen of Diamonds

This one was unexpected.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding a range of public domain Maori patterns that I can use when teaching my Y9's the basics of GIMP.

Monday, March 19, 2018

Laser Vision

It took some tweaking to get the laser lines to be 'just right'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting access to a free resource which should help teach the new Digital Curriculum to junior students. This is something that we will all need to be doing by 2020 so getting a bit of a 'head start' will hopefully be really useful.

Red Diamond

Unsurprisingly, this one is related to 'queen of diamonds'. That image will feature on this blog in due course.

Today's Gratitude Item: After a pretty 'solid' day of work, my marking pile is pleasantly diminished. Sadly, said marking varied from being mind numbingly tedious to terrifying (in cases where it was clear that my students have not done the required work).

Pretty Procrastination

I don't procrastinate all that often but when I do, at least the results *almost* provide a reasonable excuse.

Today's Gratitude Item: Cooler weather, a long nap and an enjoyable read. Basically today was a typical Saturday and I'm a little sad that it's over. Tomorrow will involve a significant amount of necessary work but I'm not exactly looking forward to it...

Late Night Musings

I was stuck for a title on this one mostly because it was quite late and I was quite tired.

Today's Gratitude Item: That deep breath one takes on a Friday afternoon when the final bell has gone and the kids have left the room :)

Darkest Hour

Made towards the end of my summer holidays when the idea of going back to school was quite depressing.

Today's Gratitude Item: Still having time to sign up for a webinar on the new level 1 Standards. Said webinar is happening next Wednesday afternoon and it will be good to attend and hear what 'they' have to say.

Spiral Steps

This one turned out better than I thought it would.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting Matzos for Pesach. Dancing at my local synagogue where everyone is really friendly (and willing and able to sell said Matzos) makes life at Pesach time really easy.

Soft Lock

Not only is this one similar to previous works, but the colours were most uncooperative. It was one of 'those' days.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a relief request approved in record time. As a bonus, the request was for a workshop which I'll be counting as 'Professional Development'.

Disappointed Sunrise

As in quite weak and surrounded by a grey sky. Funnily enough, despite the dodgy title I quite like this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: That downloading huge files at school is extremely fast. It has made me realise how painfully slow my home internet currently is. Having access to fast Internet is a wonderful thing! Needless to say all the 'huge' files are student generated. The trick is to download material at school and save it in a convenient folder for marking at home.

Spiral Window Weave

The original version was blue but inverting the colours improved the image in a major way.

Today's Gratitude Item: Marking everything that could be marked from home. Some of my students video material was too big to download (in excess of 1 gig) so that had to wait but the rest has been graded which is a good feeling. Guess who is going to be talking to kids about file sizes tomorrow morning...

Trendy Target

Another day, another spiral.

Today's Gratitude Item: Slowly finding work-arounds for MS Teams. Currently my biggest issue is that if students upload relatively large PowerPoint files opening them in PowerPoint does not work when you push the 'open in PowerPoint' button via Teams because they are too big and the system times out before the material downloads. The work around is to go to sharepoint, locate the work there and then download it (ie: save the file). Once completely downloaded at least the file opens. Sadly opening the material in the online version is not a great option as my students have used transitions that are not supported in the 'online' version and sometimes weird things happen to their embedded sound files.

Gentle Spike Spiral

This one was fun to make - even though it took ages to decide on the final form.

Today's Gratitude Item: That most of my students are doing most of the work most of the time. The only downside is that this means an impressive amount of marking that needs to be done...

Thursday, March 08, 2018

Tunnel Display

This one could have been called 'Garden Tunnel'.

Today's Gratitude Item: iTunes 'most played' list. The group that is hosting this year's dance camp asked for my group's 20 favourite dances. Figuring that out is tougher than it sounds as over the years we have accumulated a large number of great dances and choosing the 'top 20' without concrete data would be difficult.

Chained up Sunrise

The chains were a very pleasant surprise.

Today's Gratitude Item: Reaching a significant milestone when it comes to total earnings on Shutterstock. I've been with them since 2004 and my work has been download *almost* 44,000 times. Whilst displaying (and selling) artwork through a gallery is pretty much 'mission impossible' - selling digital art as 'stock' is relatively easy.

Tuesday, March 06, 2018

Spiral Classic

It's been one of 'those' days.

Today's Gratitude Item: That helping a colleague set up his e-portfolio was much easier than anticipated. It turns out that the 'new' google sites is incredibly easy to use and it was perfect for the job at hand.

Monday, March 05, 2018

Fall Tree

The tree was created with Context Free Design Grammar. Significant post processing was done in gimp. The preceding links go to videos of the process.

Today's Gratitude Item: Hopefully getting the Office installation on my school computer to co-operate again. It was behaving strangely and the tech guys suggested 'repairing' it which is an obvious move in retrospect. It seemed to work but only time will tell whether the fix holds.

Stair Rose Revisited

This is what happens when you take squares and make them into a spiral.

Today's Gratitude Item: Really kind feedback from a colleague on a resource I created for the new standards that some schools are using this year. It came at the perfect time (long story).

Shell Sensation

Everything about this one was experimental. I was quite pleased with the outcome.

Today's Gratitude Item: Tell Tale - a collection of short stories by Jeffrey Archer. A brilliant, easy read which made the first part of my weekend most enjoyable.

Dark Reflection

I have no idea what I was thinking with this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: A sweet treat for morning tea in the form of a small amount of delicious lemon slice. It went perfectly with a much needed cup of coffee.

Odd Spindle Hole

It was a weird day...

Today's Gratitude Item: That tomorrow is Friday. It's been a tough, busy week and school has been more frustrating than usual. I'm loathing Microsoft Teams as my marking is taking 2 - 3 times as long as it used to. Things keep crashing, take forever to download and are extremely hard to use. With Moodle I could download everything at once at school and then mark it easily. With google classroom, things 'just worked'. With Microsoft it's basically a nightmare that does not end.
