Winter Glow

Named for the orange glow on the woven sphere.

Today's Gratitude Item: Key-wording some shutterstock images in record time. This can be a tedious process but somehow this time around it seemed to go quickly and smoothly.

Butterfuly Ripple

Some variations do exactly what they say - this one has had the 'butterfly' variation applied.

Today's Gratitude Item: Working out how to quickly and easily back up the databases that are sitting on our school server. Given that student assessments are involved, having a 'just in case' backup is a really good idea.

Chain Fall

I'm pretty sure we've been here before...

Today's Gratitude Item: That our school library was closed at lunch (again). The short version is that I did not have to do duty and was able to have a break at lunch instead.

Complex Curvature

This one was interesting enough to be worth rendering.

Today's Gratitude Item: The fact that my new 9th grade class could not access the google site that I made (long story). This forced me to put all the information in google classroom which is proving to be a better option for this group as they find it easier to access the work all in one place. Sometimes when things don't quite go according to plan, the work around ends up being better than the original solution.

Leaf IT

I'm not sure how this works but every autumn, apophysis randomly generates dying leaves.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding an effective work-around for a tricky, unanticipated problem.

Butterfly Network

Another in the 'too interesting to bin' category.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting positive feedback from one of our senior leaders who visited my classroom yesterday. Happily they liked what they saw.

Dream Flower

As in a cross between a dream catcher and a flower.

Today's Gratitude Item: That my 2:20 hack was well received by my colleagues in this morning's briefing. I'm not sure if anyone else will use trello / taiga boards to manage student questions but at least they laughed in all the right places.

Collage Board

This one is a mix of some of my favourite things. It was made to teach my students how to use some of GIMP's features. The 'how to' video series is at the preceding link.

Today's Gratitude Item: The divine smells currently emanating from the kitchen. Dessert is involved :)

Drop Check

As in a circular water droplet on a checkered surface.

Today's Gratitude Item: Remembering that when a .csv file does not successfully import into a phpMyAdmin database, opening the file in notepad can provide the reason (and lead to a successful fix).

Boundary Push

An odd design that got rendered anyway.

Today's Gratitude Item: An incredibly useful envelope template maker. Paired with my school's laser cutter it is now easy to custom make intricate greeting cards and matching envelopes.

Carpet Roll

Sometimes its fun to take a fractal and then roll it up...

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting to bed before midnight - at least, that is the plan...

Purim Sameach

A few months ago when this one was created, I realised that Purim is a festival about choices - so that became the theme for this graphic.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Learning how to use our departments brand new laser cutter. This piece of equipment is really brilliant and it has opened up a new world of opportunities.

Prison Beads

Perhaps this one should have been called 'behind bars'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being mostly ready for tomorrow (which is always a good thing).

Large Ripples

Am not too sure about this one. I thought it would turn out better than it did. It's sort of blurry but not quite bad enough to bin.

Today's Gratitude Item: That finding the issue with two separate pieces of student code did not take nearly as long as feared. This should lead to happy students and progress being made in the near future.

Life Mechanism

As in it looks a bit like an organic lock.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finishing my reports. These took ages to write and I'm questioning their value given the significant lag between when they are written by teachers and read by parents.

In Fractal fashion, buttons and cords are often involved.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting some much needed 'down-time'.

Friday, March 15, 2019

Half Flower

For some reason I keep getting 'half' images. Am not quite sure why that its. Equally odd is the fact that they are usually nice enough to be worth rendering.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting payment on a rather large invoice for work done quite some time ago :)

Spinal Columns

As in columns made up of vertebrae.

Today's Gratitude Item: Flea bombs. My legs have been providing a banquet for these irritating pests. Whilst I am still very sore, the fleas are now completely dead! For some reason they only seem to bite me and no one else in the household. Even weirder - I have no idea where they come from as we don't have pets.

On Tracks

This is what happens when you combine leaves and railway tracks.

Today's Gratitude Item: Colleagues who are willing to share resources and advice. Having input from expert teachers when doing new standards is really valuable.

As in 'going up'...

Today's Gratitude Item: Winning the 'Computational Thinking for Teachers' contest that was run by my subject association last week. Each day, five CS / logic questions were posted and the challenge was to submit an entry each day before the 5:00 pm deadline. Despite getting several answers wrong, I ended up in the lead which was a lovely surprise. I have no idea what the prize is but apparently it's on its way...

Friday Loopholes

Made on a Friday after a tough day at work.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being mostly on top of things (although it's early in the week so I'm not getting too excited).

Sunday, March 10, 2019

Slip Stream

This one turned out remarkably well.

Today's Gratitude Item: My dad's advice. I was feeling overwhelmed by an intimidating 'to do' list. He suggested putting one foot in front of the other. The strategy worked and a surprising amount of 'stuff' on the list has been ticked off.

Saturday, March 09, 2019

Light Purple

As in lights that are purple.

Today's Gratitude Item: That at least some of my student's errors are easy to spot and fix. It is a great pity that this is not always the case (insert deep sigh here).

Hot Spots

I'm pretty sure we've been here before...

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding a short ethernet cable in my office at school. For some weird reason when I arrive at school, the wifi is often uncooperative so using the cable is a good option.

To Do...

This one was inspired by a 'Spoken Word' poetry workshop that I attended in the distant past. It's good that poetry does not always have to rhyme.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting through a crazy-busy day. One more day until the weekend! This week has rushed by faster than usual. The words 'manic' and 'hectic' come to mind.

Wednesday, March 06, 2019

Hot Glass

Reminded me of how glass looks when it is being blown.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being on time for my first period class. My students arrived roughly ten minutes before the official start of the day (long story) - I got to my room a minute before they arrived!

Tuesday, March 05, 2019

Funky Tubing

Perhaps this one should have been called 'all bunched up'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Maybe finding a way of making a folder for each student in a class and sharing said folder using google drive / google classroom. The plan is to experiment more tomorrow.

Monday, March 04, 2019

Almost Flower

This one is vaguely disturbing. It could be because the flower is incomplete on the right hand side...

Today's Gratitude Item: Unexpected free barista coffee. It was a great way to kick start a week that promises to be rather busy.

Sunday, March 03, 2019

Emerald Uncertainty

Was really not sure about this one. It got kept mostly because I liked the dark green diamonds at the center. Am still not convinced that keeping it was a good idea.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting just about everything on my 'to do' list done. It took a while but it was worth the effort.

Saturday, March 02, 2019

Warning Light

Named for the fact that it is round and orange.

Today's Gratitude Item: A quiet, peaceful, relaxing and uneventful Saturday. The inclusion of an enjoyable novel and a puzzle book made today pretty much perfect.

Blue Steering

As in part of a blue steering wheel.

Today's Gratitude Item: Today was the last day that I taught my 'group 1' middle school class. These students visit from a nearby school and are on a 17 day rotation. One of the students gave me the mug and flowers below. It blew me away and made my day. The 'G' in bling is for the first letter of my last name :)
