Inner Shine

Weirdly, it took ages to find colours that worked with this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: Starting to get my head around regular expressions when using Python. They are in the 'extremely useful but quite daunting" category.

Checkered Dreaming

Curved checkered patterns are *almost* as much fun to make as spirals.

Today's Gratitude Item: An extra, extra long weekend. My school is closed tomorrow (day before the ball) and Monday is a public holiday. Am looking forward to the mini-break :)

Punctuated Pattern

The 'speech mark' made this one sufficiently interesting to be worth rendering.

Today's Gratitude Item: A brilliant day! Most of my colleagues were on strike but as I'm not union (long story) today was a golden opportunity to make a massive amount of progress on a resource I'm developing to teach my senior students Python programming.

Am not too sure about this one. It's in the 'OK but not great' file.

Today's Gratitude Item: A quiet day in which quite a bit got done. Am hoping tomorrow will be even better!

Very Checkered Weave

I sort of like this one but it is too busy to use as a desktop wallpaper.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally figuring out why one of my student's web / sql databases was not working correctly. When the database was set up, he inadvertently put a space at the start of one of the column names. Which meant that spotting the error took both time and some detective work. Happily we go there in the end.

Diamond Twirl

This one is sort of a flower, sort of a star and sort of a spiral.

Today's Gratitude Item: Sunday nights are my least favourite part of the week - but at least I'm up-to-date on my marking for once.

Saturday, May 25, 2019

Crater Blossom

It turns out that carefully placed craters can be quite pretty.

Today's Gratitude Item: Extremely fresh mandarins - straight from our tree. Said fruit was a bit tricky to peel but tasted very nice indeed.

Weird Flowers

Sometimes 'weird' is a good thing.

Today's Gratitude Item: Fabric Technology Students who were willing to repair some distressed headphone bags. Said bags were made from a silky, smooth fabric and fixing the seams was fairly tricky. Our students mended them with grace, flair and minimal fuss.

Sad Panda

Flickr is down for scheduled maintenance but they created a fun contest to help users survive until they are back up. We were invited to print out the Panda image provided by Flickr, then take it on an adventure. In due course contests will upload their photos of our intrepid Panda on her adventure. Seen as I don't do photography and don't do printing, here is my entry.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being almost at the end of a very tough week. It's been brutal but Friday's coming...

Amber Comfort

If you need a bright, fractal throw pillow, here's something that will fit the bill.

Today's Gratitude Item: An unexpectedly strong turn out for dance this evening.

Tuesday, May 21, 2019

Ice Thorns

Am not too sure about this one...

Today's Gratitude Item: Hand Brake - a lovely piece of open source software that allowed me to save an .mts file in the more accessible (and significantly smaller) .mp4 format. The next step is to show my colleague who teaches drama how to do this for himself.

Modern Sky Path

The background made this one interesting enough to keep.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting through an insanely long day at school. With classes and 'Open Night' after school, did not get as much done as I'd hoped and was at school for thirteen plus hours. This could be the definition of insane.

Sphere Birth

There is something a bit ominous about this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: Large fine periods during this morning's intermittent rain. Said dry spots were enough to allow a carefully timed walk which involved an emergency 'shelter / book' break at my local library.

Tunnel Mystery

As in that tunnel leads somewhere - only the exact location is a mystery.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding a kanban system that might work well with my junior classes. Whilst I love Taiga, signing up is not as easy as the new system (freedcamp). It will be good to experiment and see which works better for my students. The main goal here is to be able to set permissions and ensure that students get help in the order that it is requested.

A Bit of Magic

There is actually no such thing as magic but sometimes we can get close.

Today's Gratitude Item: The Ministry has agreed to fund resource development for one of my proposals. It's a bit of a shame they did not approve both proposals but getting something is better than nothing.

Ultra Modern

This is one of those images which looks like something someone else would make...

Today's Gratitude Item: Having time to get on top of my marking and make progress on a new programming resource that is in the works. My 9th grade students have camp this week which has meant having an extra non-contact every day. Needless to say, having five extra hours of time to prep / mark has made a huge difference. Next week it will be back to normal (insert deep sigh here).

Revisited Cross Weave

As the title suggests, we've been here before.

Today's Gratitude Item: It's my blogiversary! Tomorrow 'Not Quite Perfect' will be 15 years old which is a significant milestone. The scary thing is that my blog is now older than some of my students (yikes).

Copper Delight

If this one feels familiar, it's because it is similar to other images that I've rendered. It turns out that if copper wire is involved, sometimes I just can't help myself...

Today's Gratitude Item: The microwave! This meant a very short wait for a delicious hot dinner on a night when I was really hungry.

Monday, May 13, 2019

Summer Suggestion

In a fractal world, this is what you could expect from a day at the beach.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting help form the IT guys at school and fixing some of the problems I was having with MS Office and OneDrive sync issues. The short version is that the default location for files that sync with OneDrive is not always the best option.

Sunday, May 12, 2019

Extreme Weave

Perhaps this one should have been called 'wave construction'.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding an easy way to make multiple, specifically named copies of a google spreadsheet.

Saturday, May 11, 2019

Scribble Blossom

This one involved blurring things just a tiny bit.

Today's Gratitude Item: Realising that there is a quick and easy way to get student email addresses via google classroom. All one has to do is download the grades from any assignment and the email address are right there.

Friday, May 10, 2019

This one could also be called 'Shadow Play'.

Today's Gratitude Item: The weekend is finally here after an extremely long week with far too much to do.

Thursday, May 09, 2019

Once More Around

Don't stare at this one too long - you might get dizzy.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finding some working code that I could share with a student who was stuck. This time around, it was not as straight forward as one might think...

Yom Hazikaron / Yom Ha'atzmaut 5779

This one took a lot longer to make than one might think - but it was worth it.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Managing to memorise the names of my latest group of middle school students. I see the group every day for three and a half weeks and they are the fourth group this year - so keeping everyone's name 'straight' is a bit of a mission :)

Monday, May 06, 2019

Smooth Silver

Ever have one of those days where you feel a bit grey? You are not alone.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being up-to-date with my marking. It took a while to get to this point and tomorrow will bring more work to do but at least I'm no longer too far behind the eight ball.

Sunday, May 05, 2019

Broad Leaf

The ripples in this one could almost be the veins of a very large leaf.

Today's Gratitude Item: Making half a dozen videos to teach the new level 2 programming / planning standards. It's mostly fun but extremely time consuming. The downside is that I'm massively behind on my marking (oops).

Saturday, May 04, 2019

Shimmer Spirals

Pink, blue and gold chord - this one had to be rendered.

Today's Gratitude Item: A super-relaxing day after a very busy week.

Friday, May 03, 2019

Brick Wall Perspective

For those days when you need something vaguely pretty to bang your head against.

Today's Gratitude Item: Winning a cup of cafe style coffee at school (to be redeemed at some point in the future). It's a long (slightly boring) story with a great ending.

Thursday, May 02, 2019

Web Scaffold

Before one builds a web, scaffolding is sometimes necessary.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting my broken stop-light fixed with minimum fuss and in record time :)

Remembrance Dove (Yom HaShoah 5779)

This evening marks the start of Holocaust memorial day. The image below contains 1,996 names of those who perished in the Holocaust. The names are from the Central Database of Shoah Victims' Names.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: Unexpected sushi on a 'too busy' day.
