Silk Lichen

The 3D effect made this one worth holding on to.

Today's Gratitude Item: That a colleague I was a bit worried about is actually fine and the reason my email went unanswered was because we are technically on holiday.

Network Interference

As in a woven, network pattern which includes waves.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being on holiday and being up-to-date with my marking. Having school holidays during the COVID-19 lock-down is strange but not having to set work for two weeks is nice. In the current situation my goal is to focus on stuff that can be done and avoid both mainstream and social media. This is the easiest best way to stay positive and make the most of the time.

Spike Celebration

In the original version, the spikes were bigger and they sort of looked like Christmas Trees (hence the name).

Today's Gratitude Item: A relaxing day where there was time to catch up on random things that needed doing.

Viola Funk

As in a really funky viola / Pansy

Today's Gratitude Item: Zoom have lifted the time limit on meetings due to COVID-19. This gives us another option when it comes to running our remote dance class. I'm especially grateful that one of my dancers let me know about the change.

Fire Pole

Had quite a bit of fun with this one.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally having time to make some fractals for the first time since the end of January. It had been too long.

Ripple Rings

Another image that proves that 'different' is not necessarily 'better' - was not ugly enough to bin.

Today's Gratitude Item: Our remote dancing 'Tech Check' went well. The idea was to invite dancers to an online space where we can see each other, play music and dance in the comfort of our own homes during COVID-19. It worked reasonably well for most and it was lovely to connect with the dancers online. We'll be having a class of sorts next week at some point. It will be different but hopefully still fun.

Fibre Connection

This one is actually a bit bright but at least it is cheerful.

Today's Gratitude Item: Good friends and the possibility of running a dance class on-line. It's a crazy experiment where the aim is to have our regular dancers all meet online at the same time. We'll play some music and dance 'together'. Needless to say with everyone self isolating here in NZ, the meeting is more about staying connected and having a good time doing something we love then serious dancing. Tomorrow we will do a technical check and hopefully next week at some point we will meet online and do some dancing from the comfort of our own homes.

Doodle Waves

Sometimes when I doodle, I make random patterns / geometric shapes rather than anything concrete. This is the fractal equivalent.

Today's Gratitude Item: Being safe. Being at home with loved ones. Being able to 'remote teach' my senior students.

Monday, March 23, 2020

Glowing Flower

As is so often the case, I'm pretty sure we have been here before.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having a bit more time with my classes. Whilst quite a few students were away today, it was great to be able to touch base with my those who were at school and set them up for the foreseeable future where we will be working from home.

Mystery Box

I wonder what is inside...

Today's Gratitude Item: Auckland University's 'CANVAS' resource for teaching encryption. Whilst I've gone through most of the concepts with my class, the resource is a brilliant way for them to review, revisit and revise the various concepts. It's interactive, self marking and fun to do - which makes my life a lot easier.

Arch Flower

This one looked really boring until it was post processed.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting a new puzzle book. It's been months since I've had time to enjoy doing a crossword puzzle and the 'change' was very nice indeed.

Venus Poles

The background pattern reminded me of Venus fly traps. Hence the name.

Today's Gratitude Item: Stocking up on library books before our libraries close for two weeks due to COVID19. Of course no one knows when the libraries will actually re-open...

Thursday, March 19, 2020

Double Tiger Lily

Originally the colours were more orange / black so the name stuck.

Today's Gratitude Item: That in today's crazy world (and I mean that literally), I am able to deliver content to my students remotely. For years my students have been accessing teaching content through custom teaching videos and whilst providing guidance / encouragement in person would be my first choice - it is possible for students to work from home and still get support when they need it.

Winter Tree

If you use your imagination, this one could be a tree trunk with a brown canopy (and roots).

Today's Gratitude Item: Education Perfect has given teachers free access to their materials until some point in May to help cope with school closures if they become necessary (here in NZ, schools are open but lots of events have been cancelled and the situation keeps being described as 'fluid'). Needless to say this has saved me hours of prep time and I'm excited about using the resources that have been made available. If we had the budget, I'd be pushing for my school to subscribe for the rest of the year.

Rag Mill

The middle looks a bit like a windmill and the edges are frayed.

Today's Gratitude Item: Taking the afternoon / evening off. After weeks of little but working, eating and sleeping, taking time to read a book was simply brilliant. There is still 'too much' going on at school but I finally reached the point where I'm choosing what matters and am quietly ignoring all of the other 'stuff'.

Monday, March 16, 2020

Ragged Fringe

This one could have been called 'Fringe Benefits'.

Today's Gratitude Item: My 11th graders really enjoyed the 'Guess the Password' activity we did today as part of our Computer Science course. With any luck they now have a good understanding of what hashing is and why adding salt to passwords can be helpful.

Geo Diamond

As in Geometric Diamonds.

Today's Gratitude Item: An earlier than normal night. After a work-filled Sunday I'm exhausted which is hard because the week has not even started yet.

Saturday, March 14, 2020

Leaf Flower Weave

Sometimes orange, white and purple is the way to go.

Today's Gratitude Item: Cancelling my flickr subscription. I'm finally ready to part ways with that particular organisation and doing so is a great feeling.

Friday, March 13, 2020

Spun Flower

I've been playing with symmetry and so far it is working well.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally replacing all the image links on this blog so that they point to google photos instead of my previous provider. Said provider decided to double the hosting fees and lost my trust. After three months of systematically working through the posts in this blog, I can safely tell my old provider that their services are no longer required.

Flower Flag

For some reason this one reminded me of a flag...

Today's Gratitude Item: That the after-school session that I delivered on how to use SharePoint / Google Classroom was well received. I *think* it helped the attendees (either that or everyone was too polite to complain).

Purim 5780

This one is not late, it's just in time for Shushan Purim (Jerusalem). I'm using the time difference here to my advantage.

You can access the large version of this graphic by clicking on the image above. Images that are related to Jewish Holidays live at the preceding link where you can browse by holiday and download the image in high resolution (for printing etc).

Today's Gratitude Item: That one of my clients managed to solve her Access / Database problem with only a little help form me. Not having to pay said client a visit to investigate is a win for everyone in terms of time and effort.

Pretty in Pink

Splashes of colour can be a good thing.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally working out a quick way of exporting student emails using our database system (KAMAR). It's obvious when one knows how...

Monday, March 09, 2020

Sparkle Weave

Sometimes I end up with pretty, pale gold threads. Those days are good days.

Today's Gratitude Item: That a meeting I was *sort of* dreading went far, far better than I could ever have imagined. The short version is that there is now light at the end of the 'work tunnel'.

Sunday, March 08, 2020

Oco-Flower

This one turned out a lot nicer than hoped - especially after post processing a bit.

Today's Gratitude Item: Having all my marking done ahead of what is sure to be another busy week. Needless to say, the amount of marking was significant and it took quite a while to wade through it.

Saturday, March 07, 2020

Costume Jewels

Bright, cheerful and possibly not all that valuable (but still a lot of fun).

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally getting to catch up on some much needed sleep. Last week was 'too much' and whilst I'm still tired, it's not as bad as it was.

Friday, March 06, 2020

Infinite Glasses

The un-tiled version looked suspiciously like an hour glass - hence the name.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting to the end of a really busy week and getting most of the items on the 'critical' list done. Am looking most forward to Shabbat!

Thursday, March 05, 2020

Ornate Blues

When fancy jewellery appears, rendering is inevitable.

Today's Gratitude Item: That the self-marking worksheet that I trialled with my 8th graders was a success. It was great to see so many of them fully engaged and working hard.

Wednesday, March 04, 2020

Delicate Decision

The 'decision' in this case refers to the fact that deciding on suitable colours was not easy.

Today's Gratitude Item: One of my students showed me a short cut for inserting emoji into a google spreadsheet. This is really useful when one wants to mark electronic works by inserting ticks.

Tuesday, March 03, 2020

Diamond Sea

The waves reminded me of the sea. The diamonds were the reason it got rendered.

Today's Gratitude Item: Maybe coming up with a way to make PowerPoint files fueled by a .csv file without needing to jump through as many hoops as before. A bit more coding will be required and it will be interesting to see if this can be made to work...

Monday, March 02, 2020

Haunted Blossom

The original version looked like it had cobwebs - hence the name.

Today's Gratitude Item: Getting an easy relief. Whilst losing one's non-contact time to cover for a colleague is never ideal, at least this time around I had a great group of students who did the assigned work leaving me to make inroads into my rather large marking pile.

Rough Stone

I post processed this one quite a bit and the result was a pleasant surprise.

Today's Gratitude Item: Finally 'getting' how key distribution works courtesy of the widgets on the Computer Science Field Guide. This weeks CS assignment for my senior students is going to be slightly more interactive (and hopefully a bit more fun) than usual. The short version is that we'll be sending encrypted messages to each other via our 'public' google classroom stream and hopefully only the intended recipient will be able to decrypt the message that is meant for them.
